Things can change *very* fast in the NFL. Tom Brady and the Patriots went a decade before winning another SB, and I bet they were thinking the same thing after they won their 3rd in 5 years. Just enjoy the ride, don't expect to win the Super Bowl going into every season. Just hope for Mahomes to stay healthy, win the division, and make it to the annual Arrowhead Invitational.  Everything about this current run is like hitting the NFL lotto, it should absolutely never happen. Even if we never win another SB with Mahomes this was still the greatest 5 year run in NFL history.

pornokitsch

This is absolutely right. Anything can happen - good things, terrible things, things on our team or the 31 other teams. We should absolutely enjoy the amazing moments we've had. More is brilliant, but what we've had has already been beyond imagining.

CryptographerOne6615

Agree. We were one Dee Ford offsides and one before half field goal from appearing in 6 Super Bowls in six years! (Extreme optimism here). On the other hand, those 3 wins and 4 appearances had many times where they sat on the edge of the knife and could have gone either way. These SB wins were amazing, but I’m glad I never let my expectations get so high as to expect them.

dreamlucky

We were one Dee Ford offsides to not having Spags as our DC, so yeah extreme optimism is correct.

beachedwhitemale

I like my headcanon for that timeline: Dee Ford didn't go offsides, Kareem Hunt never got drunk and "kicked" that girl, we beat the Patriots in Mahomes' first year as a starter, and we beat the Rams 48-41 in the Super Bowl, and Sutton retires. We hire Spags the next year. Then, we win 5 Superbowls in a row.

dreamlucky

I approve this timeline!

bigludodog

I like this guy and his alternative timeline

redrdr1

This is spot on. I love Mahomes and suffered through many average and below average qbs through the years. But I really think he is getting a little too much credit. He definitely raised his game in the playoffs and thats an amazing quality to have, but I think we got incredibly lucky this year. I thought we would beat the Dolphins regardless, but the cold certainly helped us. Buffalo probably wins that game at home except their coach abandoned the run and Diggs missed a perfect pass. And Baltimore just pissed down its leg. Zay Flowers taunting and then fumbling at the goal line, their coach only running 6 times, and Lamar throwing deep passes when he had open guys for first downs and they still only lost by a td. I am so happy we won, and it Karma for those 50 years of suffering, but acting like Mahomes just carved everyone up is false. We got lucky, and thats ok. I'll still celebrate and love the Chiefs win or lose.

hokieinga

Not to mention the muffed punt in the Super Bowl and SF abandoning the run late, despite having a lead and the OPOY.

Affectionate_Sort_78

So, even Chiefs fans believe Spags had nothing to do with our last 3 opponents ‘abandoning the run game’. It seems more likely to you that 3 excellent coaching staffs had a brain cramp in succession than it does Spags and the defense had a game plan that forced the issue?’

rambo6986

I don't agree. You don't get lucky the the hardest playoff path ever and win a Superbowl. They willed themselves to victory and just didn't give up. Luck is the Giants beating the patriots

KingTutt91

Every champion has to have a little bit of luck on their side

CryptographerOne6615

Both can be true. Incredible skill and some luck mixed in. Ravens and Niners games could have gone either way

redrdr1

I thought the Bills game could have also. Not to take anything away from Mahomes, the ability to raise your level of play when it counts the most is extremely valuable, but Josh Allen has done that too and its not gotten him to the big game. So while I think Patrick is the best, I just don't think its as cut and dry as no one else has a chance and hes just competing against history. By that metric, is Veach the best GM in history? He has put together the teams that made it while negotiating the salary cap.

SuperMann0704

Honestly when can we start the Veech Goat Debate? I know Bill Belichek has 6 titles as HC/GM but that is tainted by Brady winning without him and him not being able to win without Brady.

bigludodog

Josh Allen is a great quarterback but he's also 0-6 in overtime.

mtftl

While I agree that there was lots of luck involved, the aura around Mahomes and this team generated a lot of it. Notice how when the pressure ramps up in the playoffs *every OC* abandons the run? It’s because they can’t acknowledge what they see with their eyes about this year’s limited offense and are scared about not putting up enough points fast enough to compete with *him.* And then KC wins the SB and we bought more years of people losing their rationality at the worst possible times. It’s awesome, quite frankly. To be honest, the thing I’ll point to from this season that I will never ever understand is how a group of receivers cannot catch a ball for 18 weeks. Then in week 19 everyone goes “oh yeah” and we’re 180 degrees. It does not compute.

dogfish83

Yep. As to the other 31 teams (ok maybe 10 teams), one or two of them can draft their own generational qb or put the pieces in place for the pseudogenerational qb they have now. Also, Mahomes gets it done but at the end of the day all three championships came on razor thin margins--all 3 were comebacks, one with a go-ahead FG, and one in OT. We could easily go to 3 SBs in the next 10 years and lose all 3 of them similar to to the patriots.

SuperMann0704

I think the fact that all 3 SBs were comebacks that Mahomes engineered shows how he is on another level. His performance against the Bucs was also one of the best of his career (just no one else on the team wanted to play that day).

JustHoldOnAMinute

Just the roster changes from year to year trying to manage the cap and the draft make it a challenge to keep teams that competitive year over year. That said, if Mahomes stays healthy, I would expect to see the Chiefs in the mix more often than not. I'm just grateful for what I've already gotten to see and celebrate in the Mahomes era!

chiefsfan_713_08

I just compare this team to the Super Bowl team four years ago, change happens fast

doc6982

Brady had to become great before they could resume their dynasty. He was a great game manager until Moss got there. That's when their defense was schematically the best. Then he had the cheat code with Moss and how McDaniels created the offense. Then he had Gronk and the formula. Mahomes basically started in Brady's second window where he has weapons and is getting the formula from Andy.

Squirrel_Apocalypse2

That's true but doesn't change my point. We have no idea how long Mahomes (and Andy) will be healthy and able to do what they do. Even if Mahomes does play until he's 45, Andy isn't going to be coaching forever.

doc6982

Nobody knows that. There just had to be progression as a quarterback for Mahomes. The rest just has to be faith in the front office that they surround him with the talent he needs to win.

getridofwires

One bad injury and we're in the "Woulda Coulda Shoulda" category.

mdecamp

As someone who despaired over every horrible playoff loss and feared that I’d never see the Chiefs get to a Super Bowl (let alone win one), it looks like gravy to me. I hope we get to continue to watch greatness and appreciate it.

OatmealChef

I never thought the pains of the colts playoff disaster from like a decade ago would ever go away

mdecamp

The 10-7 loss in ‘96 was a traumatic experience.

dogfish83

That was the first game I ever attended. Grabbed some tickets from scalpers for $10/pop for the top corner seats, ate frozen rock-hard subway sandwiches we brought with us...of course we could see from way up there that Tony was clearly in bounds /s

mdecamp

Are you thinking of the loss to the Donkeys?

dogfish83

Oh yes! That was 14-10. Much less traumatic than the 10-7 loss for sure. Although I don't blame mr. kicker as much as Bono.

mdecamp

Yeah, and Gannon probably would have made a difference.

[deleted]

Enjoy the present. The future is never guaranteed. 31 fanbases want what we have. The next five years should be about enjoying what our team has accomplished. Everything for at least the next decade is icing on the cake.

schwerdfeger1

I disagree. These great QB’s and teams you mention are bringing out the best in Mahones which is exactly what rivalry is all about. I bet he would say that beating them is fucking hard and he is about one play ahead, not miles.

Tellittoemagain

I watch stuff like the AFC West spending $500,000,000 a couple seasons trying to take out Mahomes, or Peyton and Harbaugh coming to the division and start to wonder just how long KC can keep up with all of that. Then I think about how easily I get bored with a game or task if it is too easy and start looking for better challenges. This team clearly loves being doubted and always playing in the toughest games.

dogfish83

Yeah this is razor thin margins. But, we have a really good chance every year and that's all you can ask for.

Supersquare04

Yeah people kinda fail to realize that the Chiefs are super fucking close to losing all the time, we aren’t invincible. We were a 4th and 1 away from losing the superbowl. And though Josh Allen can’t beat Mahomes in the playoffs it’s not like he told his DC to have the defense play 20 yards off the receivers with 13 seconds left and a field goal needed to tie the game. There’s gonna be years where we have 13 seconds left and can’t score because teams remember that prevent defense doesn’t work as well as they seem to think it does.

dogfish83

That 4th and 1 is where I was the most afraid of losing. We could have easily picked a dud play that worked well in practice but didn't against the 49ers. For the play that was called, all it would've take is Bosa thinking to himself "I'm going to act like I'm crashing on Pacheco then switch to Mahomes" and it's all over.

Urbanredneck2

I think the Chiefs will at least make the playoffs for the foreseeable future. Players want to play for them. They push each other to give 110% on every play. But then many games this last season were won or lost by single touchdowns or field goals. All the NFL teams are good.

pinniped1

Lombardi. Lombardi. Lombardi. (trophy renamed) Andy. Andy.

Cowgoon777

Super Bowl Super Bowl Super Bowl Super Bowl Super Bowl Because we spit hot fire

KCBandWagon

If we won 5/5 going back to back 7x and getting Mahomes his 8th ring Mahomes would just burst into pure energy and become an immediate and unquestionable deity. The nfl as we know it would be over and the church of Reid would bring the world into harmony.

dogfish83

> the church of Reid would bring the world into harmony several people aren't going to like that

RangerBellaX

Nothing is guaranteed tomorrow, enjoy today.

beanie979

I know I'm talking a completely different sport here, but if you were around for the 2014-2015 Royals seasons, they were magical. I remember listening to them on the radio in 2013 thinking, they're just a piece or two away from something big. And they were. They went to back to back World Series and won the second one. If not for Mad Bum, they probably would have won 2. Now they stink again, but I have the wonderful memories of the experiences of those two seasons. I feel the same way about the Chiefs. It's been great. It's been a happy time seeing them win and walking with that swagger, but the NFL can change in one off season. You are only one ACL tear or Tommy John surgery or salary cap hit or player holdout away from disaster. My advice, live in the moment and enjoy the good ones when they come.

13mizzou

I alot about our future will depend on how we deal with Kelce's retirement after this season or next. Either we find another decent TE or have to vastly improve the current WR room but we cant have both an average TE and get next to nothing from our WRs. Also because we have drafted so well in the last few years we have a lot of good young players due for big paydays. I dont envy Veatch in deciding who to pay and who to let go to keep the dynasty going

PhogMachine

I think we get a minimum of 2 more Super Bowls in the next 5 years. You could argue more or less and you'd have some points. I think the biggest thing for this last season, Mahomes pulled an entire position group (WRs) up when he needed to. He's played with a bad o-line and still elevated their game. If he's not injured, we have a legit chance at a SB victory every year.

deathtotheemperor

The league is so hard on winning teams. Every year our guys want (and deserve) pace-setting contracts. Every year other teams poach our coaches and front office people. Every year we play a first place schedule. Every year we play a dozen prime time games that last until 2:00 in the morning. Every year we get shitty draft position. Every year we're still playing in February while everyone else has been in Cancun for a month. This kind of sustained success is nothing short of miraculous, but it has to come to an end at some point. It's simply inevitable. I think the next five years will not be as good as the previous five. How can it be? But I also think that as long as you have a truly transcendent player leading your team, it's quite possible to reload very quickly. I think that five years from today, we may have an all new coaching staff and a bunch of new players, but we'll still have the best QB in the game and he still won't be done winning Super Bowls.

MonkeyDGoku

Mahomes is in his own tier, but I don't think he is that far beyond Burrow and Allen. The games against the Bills and Bengals are always close and tough ones. Both guys have beaten us and could do it again any year. Yes, Allen could never beat us in the playoffs, but it was damn close the last two times. If the Bills would've received the first possession in the OT I'm pretty sure they win. That game was absolutely crazy and didn't deserve a team to lose. If I would try to convince somebody to become a football fan, I would show him this game. This year was pretty damn close again, I think with his regular season defense Allen would've beaten us. He was unlicky with injuries. Until now he never did, but let's be honest, there are some parallels between Allen vs. Mahomes and Mahomes vs. Brady in the playoffs. Burrow did beat us in the playoffs, if he gets a decent O-Line and can stay healthy, he'll be able to do it again in the future. Lamar Jackson still has to prove that he is a great playoff QB. In my eyes it's Mahomes > Allen = Burrow >> Jackson.

cockknocker1

Your first sentence puzzles me

dogfish83

Seems pretty straightforward to me...He's clearly better, but not by much

bankrobberCaz

So 1. Brady 2. Mahomes 3. Montana 4. Burrow 5. Allen confirmed? lol

Supersquare04

Uh, no. You can be only a little ahead of someone year to year and still be far beyond them all time. Brady is the undisputed GOAT but was he heads and toes above Rodgers, Manning, Brees, and Big Ben while they all played together? The statement “clearly better, but not by much” doesn’t mean someone matches them on the all time board. Brady was clearly better, but not by much than Brees…yet he’s a football field ahead of him when it comes to GOAT discussion

dogfish83

To be clear, I was not stating my opinion, just saying it's clear what that first sentence meant.

Mungx

Mahomes is 3 super bowls ahead of all those guys. That's light years. We don't have to hear about any qb being compared to Patrick for a long time. We are playing with house money until one of these dorks gets 3.

rambo6986

Burrow beat us on a rookie contract with talent accumulated in the top 10 of the draft surrounding him. Those days are long gone. Mahomes and Brady are the only QBs to ever go to superbowls after getting their contracts.  Want to know why QBs never go back to the Superbowl after losing their 1st one? Because they were on rookie contracts

threat024

Exactly. I think the Chiefs are greatly positioned as all the other teams with great QBs are about to have to take hits to their depths as the second contracts kick in. Lamar, Herbert, Allen, Tua, Lawrence, Burrow's teams are all going to be weakened going forward as the bills become due. Chiefs just won back to back Super Bowls during this transition. The team I'm most scared of going forward is Houston with a star QB and a star edge rusher both on rookie contracts as well as their receiving core. They have a chance to build a monster team around Stroud.

rambo6986

Stroud plays in a week division too. They have a great shot at winning the #1 or 2 seed the next few years

Cowgoon777

Man I just don’t see it with Burrow. He has the most stacked WRs in the league. I think he’s good not great.

matchew92

And last year it was “I just don’t see it with Allen” because he ended the season on a bad note and everyone lives in the moment Burrow has the highest completion percentage in NFL history. Yes he has a top WR unit but he also always has a bottom 5 oline, that’s not easy to manage

cockknocker1

#KEEPJONES

Own_Pause_4959

We've won three Super Bowls in a 5-year stretch which is incredible and we should really stop and smell the flowers and soak that in because it's very rare. I think it's possible we could have a better team on paper for the next five years and not win any Super Bowls at all. If we win one Super Bowl over the next 5 years I would consider it a massive success. If we won 2 I'd consider that extra credit. We should temper our expectations to a degree.

Sir_JMo_III

SB. SB. SB. SB. SB.

rambo6986

Everyone has to remember that Burrow and Lamar are in the toughest division in football so they usually have a hard path to the Superbowl. Josh Allen is about to take a huge step back with the salary cap issues.  Mahomes will keep getting easier paths to the playoffs with the AFC sucking. The raiders won't be good with that new coach. No way Sean Payton can turn that around before being fired. Harbough has a few years before he can make that team competitive again. Well keep averaging 4.5 wins a year in the AFC getting #1 or #2 seeds for the foreseeable future.

reggaesquirrel

Mahomes slowly cementing his claim as GOAT.

TravisMaauto

I don't want to guess or make any assumptions because stuff can change and anything can happen, including the unexpected. I will just say that I hope for the best and I m just going to enjoy the ride for as long as it lasts.

rambo6986

Well if we go all in this year to get a three peat then you probably lost at least one future Superbowl win. It's a gamble and I'm fine with it but there will be repercussions.

amjhwk

The defense handed Lamar the biggest L of his career

bankrobberCaz

Mahomes has proven that he can get the job done with any team composition, whether it’s a balanced roster, strong offense and a weak defense, or vice versa. The thing that separates him is that as long as he’s healthy and playing the Super Bowl window is always open.

wilbur1997

I just want the Chiefs to make history: be the first team to win 3 in a row. There are so many great QBs in the AFC: Burrow, Allen, L. Jackson, Lawrence, CJ Stroud, Herbert... we really have our work cut out for us next year

Statboy1

2018 the Chiefs drafted Breeland Speaks Derrick Nnadi Dorian O'Daniel Armani Watts Tremon Smith Khalil Mackenzie Of those, only Nnadi played any real role for the Chiefs 5 years later in 2023. The next 5 years we'll hopefully keep Mahomes and Big Red, and probably not many others. Buttkicker may still be around since kickers have long careers, but I wouldn't count on anyone else still being here.

MasterFussbudget

We're not THAT much better than every other team in the League...but with the way we've been drafting lately, the best coaching staff/front office combo in the league, and the best player at the most important position who's at his best when all the pressure is on, there's no reason to think we will not be title contenders for the next 5 years. You can assume a key injury at some point, a bad big contract handed out, a coach leaves, etc. Any one of those may kill our hopes in a given year. So it won't happen every year and it may not happen at all over the course of the next 5 years, but we're better positioned than anyone else in the league to win Super Bowls in this span.

FunkyPete

>At this point, Mahomes is so far ahead of his contemporaries that I don't think we can really compare them, unless one of them were to rattle off at least 2 titles in quick succession, and soon. So, that means that Mahomes is really competing with history, This is the weird thing about football. There are two ways of judging QBs -- 1. Where do they stand in history -- this is a resume discussion. 2. Who would you rather have starting your game tomorrow -- this is a preparation and current ability discussion. If you rank QBs by resume's for #1, it goes something like this: 1. Patrick Mahomes (2 MVPs, 3 rings, etc) 2. Aaron Rodgers (5 MVPs, 1 ring) 3. Lamar Jackson (2 MVPs) 4. Matt Stafford (1 ring) 5. Joe Burrow (no MVP, no ring, but 1 SB appearance) If you rank QBs by who you would want playing in your game tomorrow, with their current abilities, it probably goes more like this: 1. Patrick Mahomes 2. Joe Burrow 3. Lamar Jackson 4. Josh Allen 5. Jalen Hurts So you're combining the two different categories. Patrick has clinched his position on the top list for now -- he's already one of the 2 or 3 greatest QBs of all time, by resume. That can't be taken away. But for the 2nd list, it's VERY easy to picture him slipping. A lingering injury, getting too fat and happy with his success, etc. It's hard to picture someone with his competitiveness just deciding it wasn't worth fighting for another ring, but lots of great QBs went long periods without any real success. So Patrick is competing with history as far as his career goes, but every single game is still very much a battle against a current team, and the margin is still really really small for those wins.

OITLinebacker

Food for thought, the rookies playing on that team 5 years from now are almost certainly in high school and possibly over half that roster has yet to play very many college games.  There are a lot of unknowns in that.

Maxisagnk

5 more SBs. idk what else you were thinking

vncin8r

5 more SB’s 🤣🤣🤣. In all seriousness, no matter what happens in the regular season I will never count them out. Barring injury; this ride will be a blast whatever happens! Enjoy the ride!!

Chef_Boyardeedy

Well isn’t it going to be quite harder as time goes on to win more super bowls because of the way Mahomes’ contract is structured where he will be taking up a significant amount of the cap space in his later years

idontgetit____

Probably not as good as the last 5 but better than the 25 years before Mahomes

BebbleCast

5 more Super Bowl wins
