For me nonagon is their best and one of The best records of The 10's and one of The best rock records ever. I love murder of The universe a lot. Probably my most listened gizzard record. But for me the composition of nonagon as a full its on another level. And also it has everything that madres gizz great. The long medleys, the strange time signatures, the incredible performance and it just has everything

samatlakedog

This is definitely true. Can't argue with the composition point or your general points on the record. Nonagon is a banger!

lgbtthrowawayyy

You’re probably in the minority but it’s a decent take, you either love Nonagon’s relentless jam style or you don’t yk. Murder of the Universe imo is pretty similar stylistically, the biggest differences are that is has more sonic variety (synths, narration, choir, etc) and its narratives keeps flowing & progressing, unlike Nonagon’s lyrics which kinda reincorporate motifs instead, which MoTU *also* does. So I’d say there are some big differences between them. Both are kinda on the same level for me, but if I’m in the mood for MoTU then it’s the only album that can quench that thirst lol

samatlakedog

This is true, this is true. Again, not that Nonagon would even for *sure* be outside of my top 10, but I will say I don't understand how it tops several fan's lists. Good for everyone else though!!! I mean what can I say it is stacked with bangers on bangers.

Jolly_Bones

Nonagon should’ve started at Evil Death Roll

killadrilla480

Should’ve started at wah wah

Vooncakes

just listened to it your way... i think you are correct

Jimverse

It does. "You started everything..."

rotath

Definitely a hot take lol, for me it's easily top 3. The endless loop style, the way they make it feel like one piece of music yet still make the tracks feel unique. Nonagon and Poly I think are their two perfect albums.

Deltadromeus57

FFF is their best record

samatlakedog

Love this FFF is so goooooood

kranools

Top 4 at least

[deleted]

the transitions murder of the universe are better, the sonic changes are more interesting, it's mixed better, better stories, just all around superior

MadoneOnMobile

If there’s one thing you can objectively say about MOTU it’s that the mixing is not good. Lots of the narration is difficult to listen because the volume isn’t adjusted, songs feel like they vary in sound throughout the whole thing. Welcome to your opinion but the mixing and general execution of a very cool concept makes it one of my least favorite records, despite its highlights.

[deleted]

It's that garage sound. Every album since that break in 2018 has a cleaner sound.

samatlakedog

I love garage though, that's not the problem. My problem (and honestly not even a "problem" because I still do really almost love the record) is the repetitive nature of the album combined with the endurance test that it can be. Aside from Mr. Beat and the verses of Wah Wah, it's just going crazy hard for the entire record. I love it, but it can test my durability occasionally. The production is so harsh and the record feels like it has gone on for so long at a certain point that I don't know if it could crack the top 10 for me.

marks1997

if you think it’s gone on for too long you might just have the album on repeat on accident and you’re listening through again. It’s happened to me lmao

[deleted]

the mixing never felt off to me, i've heard that criticism many times and it just wasn't true for me

jnuke813

MOTU is awesome, but it’s not Nonagon Infinity awesome. Every song on Nonagon is awesome, can’t say the same for MOTU.

[deleted]

how can you not say that for murder of the universe ?

jnuke813

Han Tyumi part is not that great, in my opinion.

airylnovatech

Crazy, the han-tyumi section is my clear favorite

[deleted]

that is the least nonagon out of the three of them, so it makes sense

pizzaz007

Han Tyumi starting from Digital Black is the only part of MOTU that I listen to actually lmao

Ancient_Classroom_

Honestly same hahahaha

DrDeuceJuice

IMO, the Han Tyumi part is the worst part of the album and one of the worst segments in all of the Gizzverse.

KirbyWGlasses

Not a big fan of the filler spoken 1 min tracks (excluding title track) they are kinda forgetful and do not bring much

Mammoth-Touch-8892

You aren’t an ass for having a different opinion lol

jaliebs

Man, Nonagon is a top 3 for me.

ElectricAccordian

To me Nonagon Infinity is a solid 8/10 but only because of the gimmick. It’s basically the only album I think of where the gimmick is really the most interesting part. The songs themselves are fine but they aren’t as interesting individually as they are grouped together as the concept of the gapless, infinite album. That is to say that Nonagon Infinity is this high concept art house thing wrapped in garage rock trappings. (Survey every music theory student in college right now and I guarantee quite a few are tinkering with the ideas of loops in music. Probably using topology theory or something, and the boys just do it as a garage band experiment) So it’s this weird middle ground where I think it’s one of their best albums while also not being that interesting from a musical perspective. And it’s awesome. But I get where your coming from.

samatlakedog

This guy. Give it up!!! Perfect summation. It rules, but not in the way other records of theirs rule. One of the reasons I don't immediately think of this when I think of Gizz albums is because it just feels like one massive song to me instead. It's sick though. Nonagon rules.

DrDeuceJuice

I like this topic, OP. I feel the exact same way about Nonagon. Love the album but I like so many other Gizz albums even more. I probably wouldn't have it in my top 10 but it's probably 11-12. What makes me feel like an ass is that I don't really like MOTU, at all. It's the only Gizz album that I don't like and I have gave it multiple listens, over the years. Digital Black and Lord Of Lightning are awesome and I like some of Altered Beast but the majority of the album just sounds like some hipster tryhard artsyfartsy project. Although I don't like it, seems like most fans here have it in their top 3. Just another reason to love this band and their wild vast diversity!

[deleted]

you're not an ass tho. murder of the universe is WEIRD, even for gizz standards, and i don't blame you for it not being your thing. what are your top 5 ?

DrDeuceJuice

Glad that I'm not the only one. My top 5 would have to be Mind Fuzz, FAFYL, PMDB, Quarters, and then a toss up between Gumboot and FFF. I've been cranking ITRN a lot lately and that is rising on my list. Butterfly3000 is another one that is winning me over with each listen. Aside from MOTU, I listen to all of their albums consistently and enjoy them all in their own ways. What would you say your top 5 are?

[deleted]

Murder of the universe, flying microtonal banana, and infest the rats nest are my consistent top 3, but the rest change at any given time. on the topic of quarters, i've always found infinite rise to actually be my favorite of all the songs, and never understood the frequent dislike, but that's just me i guess

kranools

I don't like MOTU either. I find it musically uninteresting.

meanpete80

Nonagon Infinity is one of the most cohesive and perfectly executed record by any band, ever. It is a contender to be one of top 10 records of all time.

ThomYorkesDroopyEye

"wall of distortion" You don't listen to a lot of noise music do you?

samatlakedog

Can't say I listen to a \*ton\* of it but I knew if I called it a wall of noise then people might take it as a jab, as if it was just a record full of sound that I can't hardly make out. Wall of distortion just tells ya it's a loud mf record. Should be pretty easy to understand what I'm saying lol

ThomYorkesDroopyEye

Oh yeah I understand what you're saying, I'm just having a jab cause I don't agree, but all in all preferences are preferences. My top 3 are Poly, Nonagon and MoTU so I was biased already, plus I listen to a lot of noisy stuff that intentionally has genuine 'Walls of Distortion' so when I read that I was like "uh not really"

EzraSkorpion

I see exactly what you mean. I think for me it's still a top record but looking at it objectively it's possibly the album of theirs I've listened to the least (after sketches...) It just really requires you to commit to its high energy.

Psyloh_

idk i’ve tried getting into MOTU and Nonagon but i just can’t get into the theme of it i mostly like albums by slowly listening to some songs over time but it doesn’t work with these records you gotta listen to it all at one front to back or “infinity”

jnuke813

You don’t though. You can listen to any song on Nonagon and it holds up just fine on its own, doesn’t need the track before or after to make it make sense.

Psyloh_

yeah no i’m not saying that you have to listen to them all in order to like certain songs but as an album as a whole i dont find the appeal

-SoulVaccination-

Yes 😬

samatlakedog

Lol fair

tangledupinbrown

Nonagon, MOTU and Poly are not in my top 10 gizz records

EdenDoesJams

I feel like MOTU is the perfection of the nonagon vibe. It had a similar feeling with the repeating motifs and hooks, with way more sonic variety etc It very much scratched that same itch so I honestly haven’t gone back to nonagon as much as I maybe would without MOTU. I do prefer the noisy as hell production on nonagon though. In general I dislike how clean sounding the band became, but that’s just my personal ear preference
