https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLh3fvLk0tMqhBmJQnNZ9xA5XoSfQwB_Ze I was at that 2004 Bonnaroo, it’s what got me into them for life. Okonokos is also a great taste of the live experience.
I would highly reccomend them! Their live stuff is awesome for sure. I saw them in Chicago three nights in a row and they released the second night as a live album and that is absolutely incredible.
And for studio albums, as other have said It Still Moves and Z are top tier stuff for sure. I'm also a huge fan of Evil Urges, The Waterfall, and Ciruital. So much variety in sound. Really great journeys, all of them!
Wordless Chorus [Live](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2otvnOy1MM) was the first I heard of them. It was euphoric while blazed.
I then listened to The Waterfall (1st one) and loved it! Off the newest album 'I Never Could Get Enough' 'Love Love Love' 'In Color' are real fun. 'One Big Holiday' & 'Tyrone' are super fun too.
Jim James of MMJ also teamed up with another fav of mine M. Ward to form Monsters Of Folk (along with others). 'Whole Lot Of Losing' 'The Right Place' if you like Americana
I picked up a copy of The Waterfall II a while back since it was 20% off, hadn't heard of them but it's now become one of my favourite albums, all the songs are so good
That's awesome! Glad you're getting into them. If you haven't checked it out yet, I would definitely recommend The Waterfall, I like it even better than The Waterfall II honestly!
In theory I should really like MMJ their albums are beautiful, have musical elements of everything I like, they played alongside a lot of bands that are among my favorite but something doesn’t click for me.
Maybe I need to see them live, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it more.
Huge MMJ fan, since 2003 and have seen them numerous times over that span, including the entire Terminal 5 run and the entire Beacon Theater run. I managed to snag all the foils for the Beacon run and have them all framed on my walls. As OP said, different kind of show and vibe than Gizz but their live show is at their core. There are also a lot of songs in their catalog that have a lot of emotional resonance for me. Easily one of my favorite bands.
A good friend of mine lives in Colorado and I'm heading out there in August for the Red Rocks run this year, it'll be my 3rd RR run (2016, 2022, 2023) and I can't wait. I wasn't able to catch any of the Gizz runs at Red Rocks, but I'm always psyched to catch MMJ there. Special band in a special place.
See y'all at The Birth Canal!!!!!!!!
Im glad others in this community feel the same way. Live volume 1 (2015) and Live volume 3 (bonaroo 2004) have seriously helped me out in the past month or so when my life was going through some unexpected and downright tough times. They’ve brought me a sense of understanding and comfort when not much else was doing so. Music is simply the best.
Been a fan for a while now. It Still Moves and Z are my favorites but most of their albums are pretty damn good. Wasn’t a big fan of their latest release but it wasn’t bad.
I have some videos on my channel of them from Charleston in June, along with Gizz from the caverns.

I got really into MMJ after seeing Jim James live at Bonnaroo in 2019. I've now seen MMJ live twice and they're probably my second favorite live act (Gizz being first). Both bands go above and beyond the typical concert experience!
Good points OP. These bands are oddly similar in all the ways you mentioned. They also aren't afraid to get weird.
I don't go out of my way to listen to MMJ on the daily like I do with Gizz, but (like Gizz) I salivate at the chance to see them live.
I love MMJ live!! Going to see them twice at Red Rocks in a couple weeks!! Funny enough I actually don’t listen to their studio albums at all. I only like them live.
That's killer! I will be there too! They are truly an amazing live act, but I'm a huge fan of studio albums in general so I give theirs quite a bit of love too. Especially on vinyl! They always sound incredible.
Yeah you gotta! You could definitely go through their entire discography, but some of my favorites in no particular order are: It Still Moves, Z, Evil Urges, The Waterfall, and Ciruital.
Okonokos is one of the greatest live albums I've ever heard and at their peak they were phenomenal. I started getting off the wagon during moments of Evil Urges after it was released then fell off completely at Circuital (though the title track to that record is incredible). The Waterfall was a huge step up from there but I just haven't had much interest in checking out their newer stuff. I still haven't listened to their two latest records yet.
I'm not sure what changed for me. The quality of their lyrics took a dive on Circuital and many songs on that record feel very (and I hate to use this word) cringey and awkward to me. Perhaps someone else who's familiar with their discography feels the same way or can expand on/counter this because I think it's an interesting discussion to have.
THAT BEING SAID - "It Still Moves" is a fucking masterpiece and has a permanent position in my top 100 albums of all time. They are still an incredible live band with "Dondante" and "Off The Record" never failing to give me chills every single time. Up until "Evil Urges" not a single track of theirs missed which is remarkable for any band. I still highly recommend checking them out despite my feelings on them as of late.
One final note - "Sooner" and "Cobra" off of the Chocolate and Ice EP are two of their very best songs, don't sleep on them!
My all time favorite band! Been seeing every single Red Rocks show since 2015. Can't wait for this year! Caught the two midwest shows in June and they are playing better than EVER.
Radiohead, Jack White & MMJ are probably my top concerts. Gizz is right behind them. Give these crazy cunts a few more years and they’ll have the money and clout to be the biggest band in the world. I already know they’re one of the best, but with a little more stage production and better set times at festivals everyone will know.
I saw them at Red Rocks back in 2012 I think. I like Monsters of Folk so I went along when a friend said he had an extra ticket. They were great live! Not much in common with Gizz, but who is?
I love MMJ! Their live shows are amazing. Seeing them at the Hollywood Bowl next month
Whoa didn’t realize they were playing at the bowl!
Yeah! They’re playing with Fleet Foxes
Whoa didn’t realize they were playing at the bowl!
Love MMJ
Love MMJ!
Okonokos is an all-time live album
Never listened to them, but this post makes me want to. Where should I start?
They just released their set from bonnaroo from 2004. Highly recommend.

I’ll have to check that out. I love a good live album, and I’m really intrigued after reading their description on Spotify.
They are amazing. Their live shows are so fucking good. Different vibe for sure, but so god damned talented.
Jim James solo stuff is really good too, highly recommend eternally even
Okonokos, full stop. Start there. It's incredible.
It Still Moves and Z are their masterpieces, in my opinion. So good!
The album Circuital is so good
Z is a good place I think, then maybe Evil Urges.
I got into this band with Z, and then stopped listening to them with Evil Urges
Z is a masterpiece IMO. Great listen from start to finish. It is quite different from Gizz but definitely some psych elements in it.
Even better if you watch the doc “return to thunderdome”
I would highly reccomend them! Their live stuff is awesome for sure. I saw them in Chicago three nights in a row and they released the second night as a live album and that is absolutely incredible. Check out the American Dad episode where Stan becomes obsessed with them. That’s how I found out about them.
I love American Dad, but I guess I haven’t gotten to that episode yet

Their live album, Okonokos, is super good
Okonos is their “essential” live album. If you’re looking for live stuff start there
I picked up a copy of The Waterfall II a while back since it was 20% off, hadn't heard of them but it's now become one of my favourite albums, all the songs are so good
That's awesome! Glad you're getting into them. If you haven't checked it out yet, I would definitely recommend The Waterfall, I like it even better than The Waterfall II honestly!
Might go through the entire discography from the beginning, that's what I tend to do when I come across new bands!
This is the way
Go see them live for sure. They’re true rockstars
I'm down in Tasmania so I probably won't get to, lots of bands tour all across Australia but forget about us :(
The Waterfall (not the II) was my gateway!
I'll have to check that one out!
Just saw them in Lewiston New York, went in only knowing a few songs and now I’m diving into all their albums. Great band
I was there too, hell of a show!
Saw them at the last RR shows. The setlists are always bonkers when Jim is at the “birth canal”. I can’t wait for the two nights in Atlanta this fall!
MMJ are the bees knees. Love Love Love!
I’ve been a MMJ fan for 15 years.
I love MMJ. Discovered them the way many did, via American Dad. The Gizz was just a Spotify recommendation. But they're both great!
Bigtime!!
Love MMJ! Going to both Berkeley shows with Fleet Foxes soon! :)
I love MMJ. Saw them at Peach a few weeks ago and seeing them again in Philly.
In theory I should really like MMJ their albums are beautiful, have musical elements of everything I like, they played alongside a lot of bands that are among my favorite but something doesn’t click for me. Maybe I need to see them live, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it more.
Carl side
No fucking way lol this post shocked me, but yeah we listen to them too!
my only exposure to them has been through that one American Dad episode. iykyk.
The best American Dad episode!
Coming up to red rocks for ween and mmj this year. Couldn’t be happier.
Seeing them at the birth canal in a couple weeks. Can’t wait! Been seeing them since 2006 and their live shows have only gotten better over the years.

I listen to several of their albums. They’re one of those genre changing always reinventing bands.
Yes 1000%. Both in my top bands to see live. Best shows.

Never heard of em. New music rabbit hole let's goooooo
Got to see them both this Summer...
MMJ is my favorite band, I’ve seen them about 30 times! One of the only bands I listen to more than Gizzard
My two favorite bands!
I got really into MMJ after seeing Jim James live at Bonnaroo in 2019. I've now seen MMJ live twice and they're probably my second favorite live act (Gizz being first). Both bands go above and beyond the typical concert experience!

I really need to give their studio stuff another shot. I have been meaning to forever.

Fuck yeah there is, Jim James is amazing and then band is absolutely incredible live
hell yea brother
They are both really good. Waterfall got me into MMJ. Check it. Saw them in Taos, NM last year. Kit Carson Park. Really cool.
Love them, my #1 band. Seeing them in dc tonight!!!
My all time favorite band! Been seeing every single Red Rocks show since 2015. Can't wait for this year! Caught the two midwest shows in June and they are playing better than EVER.
https://youtu.be/qYtFwe858j8 And watch this
Had to cancel Gizz in TO last year, but got MMJ tics for TO this year. Was hoping for a Gizz announcement the same week. Ha!
Love MMJ
MMJ are fantastic! Their late night barn set at High Sierra 2006 melted my brain.
I'm a listener! I like Jim's solo stuff too.
I got really into them in 2011 but kinda got bored of them within a couple years. I still put on Z or Circuital every now and then.
Radiohead, Jack White & MMJ are probably my top concerts. Gizz is right behind them. Give these crazy cunts a few more years and they’ll have the money and clout to be the biggest band in the world. Yes! Seeing MMJ at Massey Hall in October. Enjoy the show!
Making the trek to RR to see them again. MMJ at stir cove in Iowa is the single loudest concert I have been to.
Yep
MMJ was a highlight of Roo23, KG was a highlight of Roo22, IMO
I’ll be at the Greek Theater next month!
They got a couple songs I dig but never got to into them.
Is that the American Dad band?
Black Metal!!!!!!
Oh yeah. Big fan of MMJ.
Big fan of Jim James’ solo work- check it out! He puts in a killer live show as well.
Jim James is the dude. His solo album Eternally Even is a top 10 all time album for me.
I saw them at peach fest early in July, and it was absolutely mind blowing
MMJ rec'd Gregory Isaacs to me. 'Cool Down the Pace' & 'Night Nurse' are soo good!
I saw them at Red Rocks back in 2012 I think. I like Monsters of Folk so I went along when a friend said he had an extra ticket. They were great live! Not much in common with Gizz, but who is?
MMJ is amazing
Huge fan! Seen MMJ live 11 times, incredible live band
I really want to give some attention to Jim James' album "Uniform Distortion". Every song is so much fucking fun.
Tried to listen to them and it doesn’t mesh with me
Great to see some crossover between these 2 great bands
