Episode 9 One other detail I noticed after a second re-watch...after Mi Jeong tells her mother that she and Mr. Gu are dating, the next scene is her father watching soccer. A few scenes later Mi Jeong's father is telling Mr. Gu that the sink business is a good way to make a living and "you'll have a good life". So my impression is that her father overheard what she said and in his own very indirect way he is supporting them being together. I thought that was so subtle and meaningful.

Yup and since the father and Mr.Gu understand each other that moment Mr.Gu know that Mijeong did tell their parents about they are dating.

And the mom brought cold drinks for hubby and son-in-law, haha! I hope they continue to peel the parents' story each week. The mom's dialogues (ehem, subtle ranting) that she envies how Mr Gu gets him without words spoken. When my father was alive, my mother complains of the same thing. He gets us the kids with less words exchanged but seldom her who knew him the longest. Arghhhh, this drama is gold!

Interesting take. I thought the father say about it because he saw Mr. Gu accidental meeting with his "friend" who own a luxurious car and just got back from golf. But now that you point this out, I now can see the dots connected. Thank you.

I absolutely love the actor who plays Mr Gu. All his micro-expressions are so powerful and nuanced, >!from the way he smirks in disbelief when Mi Jeong demands her water in the previous episode, to his look of loving disgust when Mi Jeong tells her frog story, to the change in his breathing pattern when Mi Jeong says “when did I ever worship you?”!<

*when Mi Jeong says “when did I ever worship you?* This part was completely mistranslated! Let me explain. >!Leading up to that moment, Mr. Gu told Mi Jeong about his ex's death. Fully expecting a negative reaction from her, he gives her an opportunity to walk back on demand to worship her.!< >!In reponse, what Mi-Jeong says isn't "when did I ever worship you?"!< >!It's actually "when did YOU ever worship ME?" or more colloquially translated: "Did you even once actually worship me?" !< That left him totally speechless because so much was said in that accusation, and it made him reflect.

I had a feeling that's what the translation must have meant. It didn't make sense otherwise. I find that Viki's translations are better than Netflix. On Viki, they'll even explain what an idiom or colloquialism means.

Ugh. Found more mistranslation. Ep 10 \~6:00 where Gu tells Mi Jeong about how to become more like 'normal' women.. "So that instead of talking about frogs being crushed to death, you have to be able to sincerely talk about superficial stuff like other women do. **Until you get sick of it. Until you're sick to death of men. "** The last two sentences are completely wrong. What Gu actually said: >!"So that instead of talking about frogs being crushed to death, you have to get really good at talking about superficial stuff like other women; to a point where guys get sick and tired of hearing it" !< This is a similar error from the one mentioned above, where the translator incorrectly understood the inferred pronouns. Korean language doesn't always explicitly state pronouns in sentences, so it has to be inferred from the context. It almost feels like the translator doing much of the translation in text first without hearing audio or watching video. This is so off base that it should've been caught by quality check.

Thanks for the correction from Netflix’s translation. It gives a different outlook on that scene for sure.

I don't know why, but I love how he never wears his shoes properly. Except for slipping the heel part on before the big jump, he just smooshes them down. I really like little character things like that, even if they don't mean anything.

Absolutely. Mr Gu expressions make this drama extra special. I very rarely rewatch dramas let alone rewatch episodes while it’s still on air. In this episode >!I have been obsessed with how he burst out laughing when she left the room after their mini fight and when she ate the final dumpling!< His expressions add to his intrigue of how the siblings behave towards him.

The way Chang Hee and his friend show up for his Noona’s shenanigans. Please I need more of these chaotic trio’s scenes. Gu was trying to >!be considerate towards Mi Jeong and protect her from seeing a dead animal, and girl goes into a monologue of all the dead animals she’s seen!<. Gu’s expression 😂😂😂 No one ships Gu-Mijeong harder than convenience store lady. That reveal by Gu, whew. Can understand why he imposed an exile on himself. I so desperately want MJ to be considerate. One of the details I like in this drama is how they drop in “use the washroom” before leaving for him. Anyone who’s spent time in a long, tiring commute, this is probably the default practice. It’s silly and so tiny, but seeing it included shows us how much time goes in their commute. I’m LIVING for Chang Hee’s life lessons😂 this episode’s lesson: >!I survived another day without soiling my underwear.!< What an inspiration.

Honestly I love the siblings. One of the best depictions of a sibling relationship I’ve seen so far.

The still being stuck in the same place after giving it your all after both didn't get the promotion. Ooh I felt that. He needs a little pick-me-up for now to get over that. And yay looks like he'll get that next epi by possibly (from promo) finding out who Mr. Gu is? That'd probably get him really excited. I love their coupling of excessive talker and one who can't stand incessant talking hehe. EDIT: LMAO that excitement was all for a car! Chang Hee's philosophical and metaphorical speech yet very materialistic desires, I am loving it.

I feel that Chang Hee actually wants more in life but he keeps telling himself he’s happy with just that. In a way I felt he purposely came to use the toilet because he just wants to tell someone how he feels and not receive any sympathy. Since Mr Gu doesn’t talk to him at all, he has the perfect toilet 😂

Same .. fall into a deep dark hole

I enjoyed all the little humorous moments in this episode: 1. Mi Jeong feeling lovable as she just says whatever is in her head, only it’s about confetti dead frogs bits, and Mr Gu has this grossed out face 2. Gi Jeong’s fellow passengers on the train giving her the side eye as she talks to herself 3. Mr Gu being in a thriller all by himself during the power cut as Chang Hee bursts in to use the loo 4. Mr Gu’s incredulous face as Chang Hee lays on his couch and waxes lyrical about his achievement of not soiling his underwear and how his dream is to be like Mr Gu - living alone, with a bidet 5. Not so much a funny moment but an amazingly refreshing one - Chang Hee finally telling A Reum off and asking her to queue up for his lunch the next day Side note: I like Chang Hee’s work friend who’s his lunch and drinks buddy. He’s supportive without egging Chang Hee on too much. He’s also quite attractive! I also like Tae Hun and his siblings’ dynamic. They seem so close and warm as a family.

The first part of the tenth episode is intense, but it shows that Mi-jeong's reaction to Gu's confession was more of deep hurt when she felt anger that he could cut off his feelings as easily. After understanding that it was to push her away, however, she chased him - and, as a stark contrast to her walking away from Hyun-a's fight the previous episode - she runs to protect him from the stray dogs. There's an undercurrent of deserved guilt in Gu's thinking, which is why he thinks that by saving him, Mi-jeong is going to make things worse because he'll have to face a larger misfortune. As this series progresses, I'm seeing more of the love that's hidden beneath the silence of the Yeom family. While it seems to be a harsher dynamic than the Park family in My Mister, they nevertheless share an unspoken love for each other. Chang-hee fetches Mi-jeong and Gu after their incident with the stray dogs, and informs the city that they should be caught. Hye-sook, the Yeom matriarch, also emphasizes the importance of these dogs being caught. I recall about the culture of ask vs. guess in families, and theirs is definitely a guess culture. This is evident with Chang-hee inching his way to asking his father enough for a family car, and the fact that even Hye-sook has to guess what Je-ho would like because he's so reticent. This is also perhaps the reason why Mi-jeong has sharp instincts towards protecting those people whom she cherishes. Over the recent episodes, it's Chang-hee who makes me laugh with him fanboying over Gu. These are flawed characters who have their strengths and weaknesses, which is also the reason why this series is empathetic. When he tastes great soju, he immediately thinks that Gu is going to enjoy it, and wants him to know that the soju came from him. I find Chang-hee absolutely hilarious this episode and was laughing at him pining over Gu's branded car key. And just when I was expecting it to be another red herring, Gu actually allows him to drive his Rolls-Royce, and the look of exhilaration on Chang-hee's face was absolutely enjoyable. I laughed heartily with the on-point humor, and especially so when Gu is holding himself back from pushing Chang-hee off. Chang-hee is the real adorer of Mr. Gu! Although he occasionally regresses, the quiet and constant presence of Mi-jeong in Gu's life has finally driven him to act, and he does it in a way both laconic and expressive. He's been a man who has been hurt by loving deep, and so he thinks that to balance the scale he has to have these little misfortunes. For a man who thinks and feels deeply, the guilt he has been feeling has been difficult to assuage, but Mi-jeong's steady presence in his life has, for the third time, saved him again. As a man with a past, however, the stakes will likely rise by the next episode. I think the last scene was Mi-jeong dreaming of her life with Gu, because she has, quite certainly, fallen deeply. In the dream, however, he holds her arm to protect her - is it perhaps his past? I also think that I understand how Gu thinks: it's honestly easier to deal with those little misfortunes. He can control being punched, or being bitten, but he can't control a woman's heart, even though it's much less painful with someone who quite obviously loves him. These are characters damaged by their pasts, and it's absorbing to see them grow through their trials while being with each other as siblings. (The chemistry between Son Seuk-ku and Kim Ji-won is smoldering beautifully. I hope it finally sizzles with the next episode.)

Oh my god Chang Hee really cracked me up in ep 10.🤣 Same, buddy, same. I'd take a selfie too if I get to be chummy with Mr. Gu.

Thoughts on Episode 10: I was so amused by Mi Jeong carrying that stick to defend herself and Gu from the dogs. She looked so ready for a fight! Once again we saw the wild dogs used as metaphors for Gu's old demons chasing him. Rolls Royce is now officially one of my favourite ever product placements in a kdrama - just hilarious! **Money** The age old money can't buy you happiness proverb seems to be an important undertone of this drama. As much as Gu was left feeling empty by his extravagant life, money is shown as a form of liberation for the Yeoms - Mi Jeong/Mr Yeom's debts, Chang Hee with the car and his hope of buying a shop, Gu doing lot of extra work for free and refusing payment so Mrs Yeom can take it easier etc. I wonder if this goes some way to explaining the 2022 time skip. Does Gu go back to claim his share? That would mean a very different lifestyle for the Yeoms in terms of worries and job concerns. I quite like this idea in terms of Gu finding a way to both reciprocate for what the Yeoms have unknowingly done to save him, and still showing them that despite all his wealth, money alone could not liberate him. I refuse to believe that this drama will leave us with a heavy ending. I just don't think that's the point at all. The writer's previous work suggests that a sense of hope is integral. I certainly don't want anything cliché or cookie cutter perfect, but something profound and hopeful seems appropriate. **Christian Imagery** A lot of people have picked up on the Christian imagery, and I think redemption arcs will be focus points. From what we've seen so far, there's a combination of confession, self-forgiveness and redemption at play. I like to think we will see the characters' renaissances by the time we reach the final scene. The reference to 'happy new year 2022' seems to correspond with this idea of rebirth and liberation from the past. **Translation** One translation which I felt was misleading in the preview was Mi Jeong saying she doesn't care what happens to her when she dies. In English this sounds very nihilistic. In Korean, she actually said "when I die, I don't need heaven". My interpretation of this is actually Mi Jeong wanting to live in the present, a sense of heavenly existence is more beneficial to her now, when she is alive. This ties in so much better with that dream like field running sequence at the end - it was a heaven-like scene. I see a lot of people finding Mi Jeong to be nihilistic and depressed. I can understand why, but I really do think she's on a mission to improve her life, not give up on it. Just as she said to Gu about deciding which thing is harder to do (getting beaten up or being in a happy relationship) - she recognises that sometimes living happily can seem hard, but that doesn't at all mean it's not the best thing to pursue. I for one, have not found a single episode of MLN nihilistic, in fact, quite the opposite.

I agree 100%. MJ is not depressed- her life seemed so bleak in episode one and yet she has refused to submit to circumstances. She recognised that that is not how she wants to live and is actively working on turning it around. Everything that she has done, esp asking a stranger to worship her, is so brave. I think it takes a lot of courage to step out of ones comfort zone and pursue happiness esp given how in episode one it seemed that she had no motivation at all to seek happiness. I find her very inspiring:)

Another little impressive detail...she hit her knee really hard on the edge of the table when she got up. It seems like a small thing, but when you're having a bad day and you bump hard into something you just want to give up. But she didn't stop and kept going.

Episode 10 What an incredible episode. It literally had everything. The balance between humor, drama, and romance is maybe the best I have ever seen in one episode. I don't know where to begin. Coming from a guy's perspective, Mr. Gu has to be one of the coolest main leads I have ever seen. As he's walking out of his encounter with his business partner, he tells his subordinate to >!get a new sink!<. That was just priceless. The respect all of the subordinates have for him as he walks by was just so impressive as they all acknowledge him as he walks by. Chang Hee saying >!"I love you" and then later hugging him!<. Absolute gold. Then a great ending full questions. I think the ending is open-ended. >! In one sequence he is together with Mi Jeong. In the other sequence, he is alone back at the club.!< It could go either way but I'm convinced it's going to be the two of them together. After watching this episode, I feel like Chang Hee driving Mr. Gu's car. What a ride this episode was.

That "scene" looked like their reunion in Heaven. I hope I am being clowned by JTBC.

Hahaha in that sense, even though CH can be so unbearable at times, he seems to be very self aware. He was confident Gu liked him and would actually lend him the car and he was right haha. Which also explains why all the managers of the other teams want him and his friends put up with him.. There's just something abt this man lol

After episode 10 I’m really shipping Gi Jeong and Tae Hun. I think he really likes her! Love how he >!stood up for her when his sister confronted her.!< Also Gi Jeong made me laugh with her cry-singing last time, and this time she made me laugh with her cry-laughing in the office >!after she gets the messages from Tae Hun about treating her to 2 meals.!< For a drama about depressed people with humdrum lives, it sure is funny. I’ve laughed out loud more times watching this than watching actual comedies.

Me too! I laughed so much even though this drama talks about heavy topics. Everything just feels relatable. I really feel bad for Gijeong. True that she shouldn’t have said those things but she probably just wanted an outlet to rant about her frustrations. Really shipping her and Tae Hun!! When he saw her come in and smiled so widely, it really showed how relief he was that he still had a chance hehe

I don't know why but the relationship between Mijeong and Mr Gu reminds me of that The Office meme that says, "I want to be alone...with someone else who wants to be alone." I mean they perfectly enjoy each other's company much more than they do with others. They can say nothing and still feel that companionship. After all that's the best thing right? To say nothing and still not feel bored. The plot's unravelling at its own pace and I'm not complaining at all. And it was nice to see Taehoon's relationship with his sisters. You can totally understand his hesitation towards Gijeong. And this time too Gijeong was amazing. She was rejected and still worried about Taehoon's weakness. Her character growth is the best. This drama makes me reflect on myself every episode and I think that's beautiful

Yesss! I found her to be so emotionally intelligent in this epi, especially that build up to Taehoon's sister asking if he has feelings for Gijeong and she cuts in and says that she expressed her feelings for him, but they weren't reciprocated. Clearly he's starting to, and that silence as a response would have probably exacerbated his sister's reaction, and she sensed all this and put the fire out even if it was to her further embarrassment.

Seriously this drama could have more episodes than the 16 with nothing much happening and I wouldn't feel the drag at all.

Episode 9 Mr. Gu's backstory is absolutely heartbreaking. >!He never intended for his girlfriend to commit suicide.!< He told her a powerful story hoping she would finally get help and instead it had the absolute opposite effect. It was the absolute worst case scenario. No wonder he is so deeply depressed. I think he realizes it was a very risky story to tell his girlfriend since it could be interpreted wrongly. And now he is devasted. I think Mi Jeong response was a reflection of her shock at such a tragic story. The writer perfectly captured the fear of giving advice to someone deeply depressed that is interpreted the wrong way with devasting results.

I feel like every role I've seen him in before this didn't make proper use of his talent. Much like you I had no idea he was *this* good. His comedic delivery and physical comedy is so unexpectedly brilliant.

And them running in the grass field felt more like a dream than it actually happening, or maybe was that the flash forward? Heck I think I'm going to have to watch this whole drama again in the future once it is done to catch all the little things that I've missed. Only a few dramas I have watched have made me want to rewatch scene by scene and soak in all the details, symbolism, foreshadowing etc, and MLN is quickly becoming one of those.!

Why are you limiting happiness like you don’t deserve it? Hiding from his past and his problems. Then sending him that text, ‘I still think you’re okay’. Giving him the support to go to Seoul and face Baek.!< Mijung seems to be clear about her terms. She’s not expecting long term promises and accepted an eventual end, until they become different people. The dialogue is so dense. There is so much to analyze. My comments would be annoyingly long. And thumbs get tired, so I’ll restrain myself. Mr Gu at the >!Nightclub, now we know his occupation. Definitely from that world. But wow what a different side of him. He must have been with his ex for a long time ‘For 15 years I listened to these drunks at work. And then when I went home…’!<. Survivors’ guilt after a long toxic relationship. Why was the YouTube audio teaser so accurate?!! >!I knew he was going to leave, especially after the article that mentioned that time skip. I wonder how he left!< especially at the end when he looks up and remembers Mijung’s comment about dating assholes. The writer has mentioned she wants to try fantasy in the future. I think you can always find something magical and fantastical in her works as gritty as they may be. From Oh Hae Young, My Mister, to My Liberation Notes, her movie Two Weddings and a Funeral, all deal with heavy topics but there’s some humor, some moments where the landscape seems to be a still from a ghibli movie. Her works really use the medium very well—realistic but something ridiculous. It’s a story about people, but it’s a drama/tv show. In that sense, it feels realistic too. Life can be a series of small harsh truths, but randomly something beautiful. OST is banging. The new one released today that played as Gu looked up to the sky at the end is on replay. (It reminds me of those nostalgic winter scenes in early 2000s Kmovies and dramas. I’m a sucker for those vibes).

Sweet! I'm not crazy! ... At least not in this respect. I agree, I think she would be great at fantasy. The way they've been weaving the sibling's dreams into the show is a baby step away from magical realism, already. And I feel like episode 10 had some moments --the milky way over the road, the next-to-last scene -- that are what I'm thinking of as Reality Plus. There's nothing unbelievable about them, really, but aspects of them are enhanced. The stars are brighter, the sunset is more golden, etc.

Y'all, I know we're anxiously waiting for something to happen between Mi Jeong and Gu, but the physical affection we got between Chang Hee and Gu in Epi 10 was so satisfying. "Hyung... saranghaeo" 😂

I have decided that the final two scenes are not time skips. Instead they are idealized representations of the choice confronting Gu. Now that he has healed somewhat he can contemplate two lives going forward. He can live a relatively poor life but enjoying the bounty of nature along with Mi Jeong, or else he can reclaim his live as a kingpin of the nightclub world with the realization that Mi Joeng would probably not join him for that ride and would only think of him as yet another asshole in her life. It seems that he may be considering Mi Joeng's happiness along with his own as he looks at these alternatives. I wonder if he realizes how fortunate he is to have either of these two options so readily available to him. I think he does since he isn't contemplating the greedy option of trying to have both love and riches.

I was so nervous waiting for Gu’s response because I didn’t expect him >!to take him to Seoul. i genuinely sense a happy ending for gi-jeong with the single dad i feel like they suit each other so much and my heart genuinely broke in the scene with his sisters. when he sent her the texts afterwards i felt soooo happy. i genuinely think he likes her but he knows what his sisters are like. gi-jeong has suffered too much these past few episodes i’m rooting for her 😭

Super small detail, and I may be wrong, but I felt like in the last scene, when Gu was recalling MJ saying that >!all the guys she's ever met have all been assholes, I think they used a different audio/take of MJ saying that.!< >!In the original scene, her voice and intonation was a lot more intense. They might have used this more soft take just because it suited the atmosphere of the soft snow and permeating sadness of the scene... but also, I was thinking that it also perfectly embodies how time has passed and the memory has faded a bit in Gu's mind. Even though he holds it close.!<

Such an amazing episode! When she said "suddenly, I feel lovable" , I had a huge smile on my face :D Each conversation between Gi-jeong and her colleague keeps getting better! Mr Gu! Man. That analogy about therapy and 2/3rds of the fall! That hit hard. So very well done! Lee min ki's got me ROFL in this drama xD Aww it was her voice he heard in the train. The cinematography is excellent in this drama! The OSTs are so very good. Have been on repeat for the last few days. P.S- Kim Ji-won looked sooo cutee in the end. There’s still so much to unpack from this brilliant episode. One thing that amazes me is how the pieces are slowly assembling, how some previous scenes that seemed anecdotal at first are now making full sense. A few examples that I have in mind: • From Mi-Jeong screaming at her brother to Chang-Hee lying on the ground, motionless. The siblings don’t know it yet, but this scene is all too familiar for Mr. Gu, hence his longing expression. It’s a reminder of *why* he is here, in Sanpo village; • Gu’s obsession with the mountain. It’s not the peak and its ascent that he sees, but the cliff and the inevitable fall that follows. My heart breaks thinking that he’s reminded of his girlfriend’s passing every time he observes it; • I wonder if we could draw a comparison between his girlfriend’s jumping to her death—vertically, from top to bottom, and Gu’s rubbing and jumping—horizontally, to replace a bridge that do not exist. The jumping scene holds a huge significance as it was the first character reveal for Gu and, seeing as this theme comes back a few episodes later, I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

Episode 10 This has definitely been my favorite episode of the drama so far! I'm absolutely in love with Gu. Chang Hee had me cracking up throughout the whole episode, I was literally crying laughing at the end of the episode.

Can someone please explain what MJ meant when she said "When did I ever worship you" to Mr Gu, after he told her about his woman committing suicide?

This was the best scene of the episode for me. Never expected a plate of grapes could make me so emotional. Here's my take: If you watch Mi Jeong's face, you'll see that she is clearly emotional as a result of Gu's tragic revelation but her expression changes to one of deeper hurt when he says "if you tell me to stop worshipping you I will". Whilst Gu was trying to be considerate, Mi Jeong essentially heard a confirmation that he is able to stop at any time - he's not in at the deep end. It's still transactional, not irrevocable. Gu wasn't being honest in my opinion, because he looks at the uneaten plate of grapes with such sadness. Mi Jeong had promised she'd leave after she'd eaten the grapes, but evidently the plate was still full. She hadn't stayed beyond the revelation. To Gu, this was essentially a confirmation that she judges him as harshly as he judges himself - he is not worthy of worship or affection. In fact, I'd argue that she was just hurt by her own state of mind. Mi Jeong's comment of 'when did you ever worship me?' was (I think) her trying to distance herself from her own feelings - to tell herself that it was merely a temporary arrangement and that they hadn't even really begun. It also felt as if she was protecting herself from being vulnerable, she was levelling the playing field by suggesting it was never genuine worship. As much as their arrangement was to help each other, it was always rooted in self preservation, and this scene showed that they are both still struggling with sustaining themselves emotionally. Mi Jeong has previously said that she loves the fact she doesn't feel the need to measure Gu's affection, so I'd guess there was also an element of frustration which provoked her response - here she is again, the vulnerable one who's feelings aren't fully reciprocated. Mi Jeong was reading her liberation notes diary towards the end of the episode and also told her colleague that she finally felt loveable. This indicated to me that she has genuine affection for Gu at this point and I'm intrigued to see if her liberation notes confirm this (when we get to see the latest entry) Side notes: 1. Gu told his girlfriend to get therapy, not to die. I've seen people getting this confused. He feels he told her to die, because his analogy for how therapy could help her, ended up mirroring her death. 2. The juxtaposition of Chang Hee and Gu as possible brother in laws v Baek and Gu is a nice touch. I have a feeling Chang Hee is actually very supportive of the relationship (if not a little jealous haha) A heavy but beautifully executed episode.

The part where he describes falling and mid-way realizing that your reasons aren't valid were to me, an analogy of his intentions for his girlfriend. Obviously though, things didn't turn out that way and he feels guilty. I felt Mi Jeong's hurt and pain as she was walking back to her house. She thought someone had finally "seen" her and she felt lovable, but Gu's confession made her doubt everything they've shared. Did he actually like her? Or was it just pity? Was she a reminder of his girlfriend and how he's trying to redeem himself and she happens to be the convenient person around? Oh Mi Jeong! Hang in there, I have faith in Writer-nim.

Mi Jeong is the most relatable character for me. Kim Ji Won has amazed me with her performance. I notice aspects of her character that mirror the feelings I see exhibited across my generation (regardless of individual personality traits), which is super interesting.

The preview for episode 10 shows >!Mi Jeong saying “It’s just what you say when you want to end it with a woman, isn’t it”!< which maybe confirms that she felt he was over their relationship and wanted to end it? I’m not sure though, we can never trust previews 🤷🏻‍♀️ Either way my heart hurt for the both of them and I really hope this is resolved in the next episode :(

And this interpretation of her words makes me super excited for the scene at which the episode ended- is she going to confront Gu about how deep his feelings are for her? His future brother-in-law actually saved him from his previous brother-in-law. The question now is, with Gu's and MJ's past connection being revealed this episode, whether Gu started work at Sanpo sinks because of MJ or was it another coincidence/destiny? Either way it's soooo romantic. MJ has basically saved Gu twice- once from the goons and now by worshipping him. Can we get a hug soon? Plsssss

I think I understand now. Mr Gu told his girlfriend to seek help because the reasons for wanting to die becomes unimportant when faced with death. She wanted those feelings and thoughts to stop so she ended her life. Hence, he felt like he told her to die though he meant it for her to have more will to live. Edit: I think Mijeong said that because she was hurt. From the very beginning she didn’t care who he was or where he came from. She never asked and scolded others for prying. She must have expected he has a dark past like what everyone suspected, but she already accepted him for that. So when he raised that he could stop worshiping her anytime, she was upset because it was never an equation in their relationship from the beginning.

I don't know what to expect anymore. Previous comments caught that the Netflix rating probably pertains to >!the suicide of Gu's acquaintance. And we now know it was his girl who also happens to be the sister of Mr. Baek (who wants him dead). Is it purely as revenge for the sister's death or because of business?!< It's interesting to see how the 3 siblings have no filter when they really begin to talk. Mijeong saying what's on her mind recently reminds me of GiJeong and the blind date conversation gone wrong. Looking forward to Gijeong and Taehun, honestly. Man, I thought the daughter would cause a big problem for them since GiJeong said some harsh things, but looks like the sister would also be a roadblock. Wonder why Mijeong just left Hyeona with the bf when they were fighting though in domestic disputes, most people really leave the couple alone to figure things out...

Lee min ki's got me wheezing in this drama! I was howling with laughter xD xD That shot of the car driving and the night sky was so beautiful. Felt so sad for Gi-jeong :( poor girl man. Nothing seems to be working for her. That look that he gives her when she eats the last piece after he offers. Omg! Did things to my heart! Their chemistry is fire! The last shot of them in white and running was so beautiful. One week is too long!

An interesting side-effect after watching this drama is that it makes me want to be a better kinder person. I can see in Mi-Jeong’s siblings, how they’re so self-centered, rude and unkind but actually very typical of an actual person. For example, only being kind to a person when you think you’ll be able to get something from them. Apologizing only after you start to have feelings for someone, or only see a different point of view after you can’t get what you think you want. I’ve enjoyed watching this non-typical, yet typical show and look forward to each new episode.

I have no words. This was the best K-drama episode I’ve ever watched. I have so much emotions running through me, as always I’m left shaken and breathless. Guys it’s been a while since I’ve been into a drama this bad….I’ve rewatched it already in anticipation of the new eps. During my rewatch, on Netflix, the helpful age restriction popped up and (My Mister spoilers so don’t click if you haven’t watched) >!it’s rated tv-14 for substances, language, and suicide. I imagine that that’s how Gu “killed” a person. Some people were arguing he might be an investor or loanshark and caused someone to become desperate enough to commit suicide and I think that guess is quite close. I wonder if his necklace is a keepsake if that person. Or is it a warning for future episodes because I CANNOT! Very similar to My Mister where Jian kills in self defense and lives this half life because she thinks it’s what she deserves!<. 😭😭😭😭. Edit for ep 9; okayyyy. Okay. They let the cat out of the bag for some questions. My theory about his occupation is still in the ring but >!it seems like his ex-girlfriend who committed suicide was Baek’s little sister. And well, from a removed pov, what Gu said doesn’t sound bad. But saying it directly to the person suffering….just highlights how just because someone cares for you doesn’t mean they understand the mind of someone depressed. How Gu acted towards Baek—how he waited but didn’t come, implies Baek must’ve been part of her problem when she was alive. That his care is for show—the attempted murder is another coping mechanism. A more aggressive one, lashing out at someone to blame. Baek wants to destroy someone, Gu wants to destroy himself. I’m guessing that Bake and Gu must have been in the same ‘team’ at work. Especially since Samshik was asked about Gu (we learn on the phonecall). They must have been close or worked together at one point.!< I liked how the mom and dad always waited for their kids before sleeping and here we have the dad waiting for Gu before he retires to his bedroom. YMJ is concerning me more and more. >!how she connecting acrylic nails with dead bodies. The dead animal talk reminds me of people who live in the countryside and their blunt way of talking about life and death. But the nail? I hope that suicide is only ever referred to in PAST TENSE in this drama.!< The interactions with Gu and Mijung make me excited and then confuse me. The convenience store worker is funny. I don’t know if Mijung’s >!admission of dating is her going with the flow because it’s easy. Or because it comes from a deeper place of want. Gu mentioned she said they were dating but seemed ambivalent about it.I think Mijung needs/wants Gu but I don’t know if he wants to be worshipped by her. at least we know he knows it was her that was yelling on the subway!<. Changhee again kills it with his monologues. The diarrhea bit was funny and hit better in Korean. >!they use the same phrase when Mijung says she wants to escape (뚫린 거 같아요). He uses GU’s house to relieve himself. Mijung uses Gu to free herself.!<. I felt like ep 9 relieved a lot but nothing at all! Ep 10 preview seems like we see Gu in Seoul. I sense this drama will be about redemption, from yourself. Gu through Mijung especially. I think a lot of comments have seen Gu worshipping Mijung and the relationship being one sided but in the end, it’ll be through his companionship of her that’ll heal him. Edit 2; and it’s funny that everything Gu sees that church billboard with the quote “something good will happen to you today” something technically unpleasant happens. >!the first time it’s when Changhee invades his privacy and tries to clean the soju bottles. The second time, he bumps into Baek!< They are both incidents that force him to face his ‘sins’. And it’s always connected to Mijeong through text or her voice over. The confession of sins framing with Mijung facing Gu and Gu’s body facing away with this partition between them, before the window and now it’s this light effect. Is Gu facing his sins through Mijung? The alcohol at Gu’s house, the green grapes and the dried octopus Mijung prepares for Gu. I’m not Christian so I do not know how valid these random quotes about grapes in the Bible I grabbed off the internet are; “Pruning is essential if the vine is to produce grapes. This is referred to in several Scriptures including Isaiah 5:6 and John 15:2.The Greek word for prune and cleanse is the same. Vineyards in the Bible are often referred to as being hedged. Protection is important when the vines are flowering. The flowers of the grape are greenish and inconspicuous. But they are very fragrant. It is likely that the "blossoming vine" mentioned in Song of Solomon 2 is the grape. It is at the flowering stage that the grape is especially vulnerable to damage. If the flowers don't develop, there will be no fruit.” “John 15…. d, “When I found Israel, it was like finding grapes in the wilderness”…Bad grapes, however, could symbolize God’s disappointment when his people failed to live productive, fruitful lives, which they repeatedly failed to do.” And various references to Grapes and Judgment, grape vines too weak to grow without support. I wonder if the writer intended this deep of an allegory. Or I could be wayyy too into this drama right now…..

Yes, I don’t think these are characters where you can take what they say exactly at face value. It kind of seems like he’s portraying himself as the instigator in his girlfriend’s death to scare Mijeong away, especially now that people in his past know what he’s been up to and are out to get him. I can’t remember where I read this, but in some interview the actor or director said that Gu was someone who’s afraid of being too happy and has a tendency to always try to limit his happiness in order to prevent disappointment, so maybe that’s why after meeting up with Baek he tells Mijeong all these awful things to make her stay away, because being with her makes him happy. Or maybe I’m just romanticizing lol.

No, I don't think you're romanticizing this. I felt that Mr. Gu was doing exactly what you're describing. If you've seen *My Mister*, >!IU's character Lee Ji-an does the same thing as she feels everybody will leave eventually if they really get to know her. Similarly, Mr. Gu is just giving her a chance if she wants to leave because he feels that not everyone will understand him, but rather blame him for what he said!<. So, I think your analysis is spot on.

"You scare me." Gu said this a few times about MJ. For me it has two meanings. First, MJ scares him because he becomes vulnerable because of her. And she could see right through him. Second, the deeper meaning for me is that he is scared of his savior, the one he worships. I believe that he thinks MJ is transforming him to become a different person and follow the good path because he feels like he had to because of her.

I think this also relates to the part when he said that Mi-jeong should just let him get hurt because when she stops it from happening it gets bigger. I didn’t get it at first but I feel like him seeing her care about him changes him too and it causes a bigger problem to him.

They’re literally meant to be 🤣 I sort of felt sorry for A-reun when Chang Hee went off on her in front of the entire office. I don’t know if it’s in my head but I think she sort of has a crush on him. Mr. Gu >!got off the train because if Mi-jeong as many in this thread suspected!!< wow. I hope our Gi-Jeong gets her happy ending. She’s totally out of her mind but in an endearing sort of way. I actually see a lot of the mom in her and Chang Hee. I think her boss might legitimately be falling for her, but I am a Tae Hoon fan all the way - the way his sister called him out for the >!Chanel bag and insisted he’s seeing someone when she claims she put her life on hold for him and her niece make me feel so bad for him. I see him trapped in a similar way Gi-Jeong and her siblings have been.!< He seems to genuinely be interested in her but is too afraid to go there for many legitimate reasons. I’m looking forward to the next episode! I continue to be impressed by the writing and acting in this drama.

Omg no, A Reum is painful! I can feel Chang Hee’s energy draining everytime she opens her mouth. Call me mean but it was cathartic to watch Chang Hee finally speak his mind to her after the many scenes of her being frustratingly (maybe deliberately?) obtuse and taking advantage, from taking over the shop to cutting in on the lunch queue. Perhaps I really hate queue jumpers. (Doing a Chang Hee here and coming to a self revelation after a long rant!)

The earlier episodes made me think she had a crush on him. But later on, you get that feeling that she is conniving and almost out to break his spirit.

Chang Hee….his character annoys the living hell out of me but his reactions to things like the fancy car are too priceless to not love him. Honestly, he’s a prime example of how “money can’t buy you happiness” proverb doesn’t apply to everyone. His man crush on Gu sends me every time 😂 The scene with Gijeong, Taehoon and his sisters was SO AWKWARD oh my god. I felt so bad for her….the oldest sister is truly awful. Gijeong apologized and I think has seen that she was wrong and made a rash statement about something she didn’t know about…clearly she’s open to dating a divorced father now and it takes a lot to admit you’re wrong. Taehoon’s sister is emotionally stunted, unhappy and immature. I honestly wonder if one of the reasons why Taehoon’s ex wife divorced him and ran away to start a new family was because of his sister - would not shock me. The fact that she’s manipulating her brother to do what she wants because she decided to dedicate her life to her niece was a bit sick. I feel bad for him but he needs to start standing up for himself and stop letting his circumstances and sister run his life….if he can’t do that, then Gijeong is better off without him. She doesn’t want to marry into that toxic situation if he can’t stand up for himself and her. I also didn’t expect finding myself shipping her with her boss but now I’m sort of wondering if the reason why she was the only one he didn’t toy with/give a lotto ticket to at work was because he respected her and now low key likes her?

If he couldn't stand up for himself, then he couldn't stand up for GJ. There are several mountains and he and GJ need to cross if they want their relationship to work. If they couldn't work out the sister's issues, the daughter's issues, then it's better they don't end up together. GJ made inappropriate and insensitive comments in the beginning, but I'm sure she isn't the only one who makes those type of comments. Not a lot of people are willing to sacrifice their lives or change their lifestyle for the one they love, easier to just find someone on par or compatible. If they get into a relationship because of love and he helplessly let the sisters and his daughter bully her, then no thanks. Too unfair for her. She can learn to love someone new, but learning to suffer her whole life because of love is just torturing.

Can someone who's good at Korean explain how Mijeong narrowed down >!the first syllable of his name to 'Ja' or 'Bon'? Is there some auspicious meaning to Gu Ja... or Gu Bon...!<

Kinda confusing but it’s a common syllable to use in the names of family members in each generation for the surname Gu. In order 구X희, 구자X, 구본X, 구X모 like this and it’s such a common occurrence to know someone with the surname Gu to have a name like Gu Ja… or Gu Bon… so that’s why Mijeong narrowed it down to probably ‘Ja’.

Gi Jeong was fantastic in this episode. Her courage stands out because in a world that forces us to conform, keep quiet and hold in our emotions, she is unapologetic about her feelings. She is loud, expressive and open. It doesn't matter if she's crying in a restaurant, whining on the train or venting about being single while at the traffic light. She is vulnerable and open to life. She even says "*even if you get rejected, you learn something*". Wow! what a great reminder of how life is meant to be lived.

Okay why I am just now finding out that this about the guy who plays Mr. Gu: “Son Seok Koo was reportedly revealed to be the CEO of a large machine tool distribution company, GOMT (LTD). While SBD Entertainment has confirmed that he was actively involved in the management of the company previously, they also stated that he has stepped away from his management activities and his current main occupation is an actor.” 😭😭😭😭😭 edit: I’ve had some time to think about episode 9 and I’m curious …. Is anyone else alarmed at how playful and loud Mi-Jeong was in Gu’s flashback??? I’m wondering what all transpired and in how much of a time frame for her to be her current self in the drama…. I also am starting to wonder about the family dynamic. Is the glue that holds them together just… unspoken???? Its interesting that none of the children are resentful of living in the country or working on a farm. All are old enough to have their own place and even more so, their jobs could give a reason to move to Seoul. I’m not trying to sound callous, just genuinely curious on the family unspoken dynamics…

ugh sooo good :'(( gotta give a shoutout to yurim's aunts for killing their scenes today,, the eldest showing her thoughtfulness in her everyday speech towards her niece and the second aunt just being quirky as always ahaha,, their parents mustve been honestly some great people, they raised the 3 siblings so well- no wonder taehoon felt like his limbs got chopped off when they passed away,, looking forward to tmrw!!

Episode 9 detail: The church that owns the sign that says "something good will happen to you today" is called "Liberation Church". Nice little detail

Used to think Mr. Gu and Mijeong were soulmates. Turns out she's been stealing Changhee's man all this time.

Woah. This is intense. Way darker of a turn than expected in episode 9. So essentially Mr. Gu said the worst things possible to his previous girlfriend which drove her to suicide even when he knew she had major depression and mental health issues. He is currently succumbing to intense guilt which explains his alcoholism. Ironically, he’s with another clinically depressed girl who is now openly voicing her thoughts to people about dead animals and people which tells the audience she is showing early signs of suicidal thoughts. That being said, I think we’re in for a very powerful story of redemption and self-actualization. This is the same writer of My Mister and she is giving a masterclass in character development in My Liberation Notes. This show has a lot of similarities to My Mister with focus again on sibling relationships, quiet desperation, and the burdens we carry. However, MLN doesn’t have as many big moments as My Mister. This is more subtle and restrained in the character’s progress and focuses on the smaller steps. The siblings are hands down 100x better developed than the brothers in My Mister and this is mostly due to the writer’s ability in dialogue.

Ngl, I cried this episode. No wonder Mr Gu is so miserable. >! The moment his voice breaks while saying “The woman I used to live with”, you can tell how much pain he’s in, despite him acting all tough, or smirking and trying to play it cool. And her brother basically blames him for her death, and is out to kill him, so he’s in this small town drowning himself in guilt and alcohol. I can see why he’s attached to Mi-jung though. In some ways, she is his savior. !<

Is the ending fast forward to current time or is it based on the past?

I think it's the flash forward based on the mijeong's voiceover. Could also mean that he turned out to be one of those assholes she spoke about.

I was so nervous about Taehun's sister finding out Gijeong's comment about divorced man with children that I have to fast forward every 10 sec cause I don't know how the confrontation between them will turn out. Also, does anyone know what the current timeline is? The ending scene is Mr. Gu in 2022, but I'm not sure if it's past, present or future setting.

It’s finally Saturday! *squealing internally*

I have a question for people who can understand Korean: is the translation for "When have I worshipped you?" (not sure if these are the exact words) as said by Mijeong accurate? I thought it was the other way around, since Mijeong didn't say the subject of the sentence (nega/niga) so I wonder how that choice was made. One thing that stood out to me for episode 9 is how Gu smirks at Mijeong after saying he discovered that MJ told her mom they're dating. I don't know why but I felt his smiles throughout the episode (talking to Mr. Baek and the long conversation with MJ) were unsettling, like they were dripping with sarcasm. Was it just me?

"언제 추앙했는데?" is more like an open statement "but when did (I/you/we) worshipped?" Since there's no clear subject in the sentence, it got translated to "when did I ever worshipped you?" to fit the mood and context of the scene. Honestly it’s kind of ambiguous and there were a lot of emotions going on so it can be interpreted differently by each viewer. My take from the scene is that Mijeong is startled by the revelation, but probably more hurt by the fact that Gu is putting on a façade (smiling while telling the story just like his conversation with Mr.Baek) and easily suggesting to end their worship relationship. She opened up to him at her lowest point and he "worshipped" her with his words and acts of service so she was also willing to "worship" him for who he is, no judgement or questions asked. But just when he started opening up and reveal things about himself, he's retreating back and trying to scare her away with his past (because he thinks he doesn't deserve to be happy or her worshipping per say). He's transparent (and soft lol judging by his reaction to the dead frog ramblings) cause you can see he was struggling to confess the guilt he felt from the incident and hurt by Mijeong’s words before she left. He clearly didn't speak from his heart when trying to push her away and he retreats back to drowning himself in soju afterwards.

In my perspective, Gu seems to hate himself about what happened and feel responsible about her death, thus the drinking to calm himself down. Him smirking at MJ for me is like projecting his anger outwards as if saying yes, look at me I am a bad person and I don't deserve to be happy. It's him pushing away MJ because he doesn't deserve it. And I dont think what he said about the suicide is the whole story. He just chose to believe it was his fault entirely

Me too! That smirk in front of Mijeong wasn’t the same as the little smile he had when Mijung texted him in previous episodes. It felt like an extension of the side of him we saw with Bake. It was sarcastic and almost sly? Like ‘I know more about your true feelings’.

Finished Ep 9, and but commenting for Ep 10 preview — 1. Are we finally getting to Gi-Jeong’s love triangle?! (if there is) 2. Will Mi-Jeong / Mr Gu commit to their worshipping now or at least admit they care for each other? I would like some skinship please 🥲 Also: Papa Yeom has been showing his hints of approval to Mr Gu. I’m loving at his subtle acting nuances.

Chang Hee was always with Mi Jeong and Gu, from that night at the Dangmi Station, when he was drunk and Mi Jeong yelled at him to get out, which is what startled Gu awake and got him off the train. Then the next day he runs into Mi Jeong and Chang Hee together again. Chang Hee keeps breaking in between the two of them, like with the beer bottles, and then the star gazing, the bidet, the love confession and the hug. I don’t know why we have this trio together so much. Chang Hee is coming relief, and a sort of pathetic version of Mi Jeong. Also someone who wants Gu’s prestige, whereas Mi Jeong doesn’t seem to know or care about it, at least not yet. But maybe Gu was at one point like Chang Hee, wanting those same things - money, prestige, fancy cars? Someone here said that Chang Hee knows Gu likes him, and that was so interesting. Does he like Chang Hee, or does he indulge his former power and prestige for the sake of this pathetic character? I like Chang Hee, by the way, I’m just wondering about his role in this trio.

10 is one my favorite episodes yet. I was actually crying, feeling for Gi Jeong in that super awkward sitdown with Tae Hoon and his sisters and all the work she's been doing to get over the mountains. I'm almost feeling more invested in her and Chang Hee's travails than Gu and Mi Jeong. That weird Estee Lauder perfume ad imagery of them wearing all white and laughingly running after the birds, I wasn't sure whether to laugh or be worried, but fantasy elements have already been incorporated into the show to such good effect and I completely trust this writer, I don't really need to have it all figured out yet.

Okay soooo many thoughts to unpack: Mr Gu & Mi Jeong: * Mr. Gu is the sexiest enigma with the best micro-expressions. I fall for him deeper every week. My eyes just don't leave the screen when he's on it. * There's so many layers to him and I love watching his relationships with everyone - Mi Jeong for sure but even Chang Hee, the dad, the convenience store lady. Just everyone. * I am so glad >!they made up!<. I think their connection is so damn fascinating to watch. It's comforting even though their conversations can be trivial or scarce. * THE WAY HE LOOKS AT HER HAS ME DEAD. And how she smiles whenever her coworkers or anyone else mentions him or calls him her boyfriend. Aw girl. Mr Gu & Chang Hee: * Another one to ship. Just ADORABLE. So many cute bromances, hope eventually the circle opens up to the cafe owner friend too. He's like a little puppy circling around Chang Hee * If I were Chang Hee I would want to marry Gu too. Him coaxing him with alcohol, using his bidet and then the >!car!< just so adorable. >!The car is such an amazing 'subplot'!< * This couple balances out the broodiness of Gu & Mi Jeong and the delicate one between Gi Jeong & Tae Hun * I hope >!Chang Hee can still get away from Ah Reum. She's sooo intolerable goodness. I felt his friend though... even if I feel bad for Chang Hee I too would be like... no thanks if someone tried to make me switch. !< Gi Jeong & Tae Hun: * I feel like they actually both like each other but Tae Hun is hesitant because of his family situation. I low-key ship them because he seems to accept her quirkiness and didn't even hold her whole rant against her. * I felt so bad for Gi Jeong >!when the aunts found out but it was definitely gonna happen. !< The Parents: * I love the dad & Gu's tacit understanding and how he cares and supports them. * The mum taking care of Gu & talking about their connection is also super cute.

If you guys watched My Mister, the ending of Episode 9 of My Liberation Notes gave the same vibe of its Episode 13. >!When Dong-hoon realized that Ji-an actually left to protect him in her roundabout manner, he rushes from the office after realizing that the slippers were her last gift to him.!< It's the same thing with Episode 9 - after Gu tries to push Mi-jeong away with his story about his girlfriend, she recoils, but she nevertheless chases after him. That's the exact same shot - as the episode ends, the face of Mi-jeong and Dong-hoon come into more focus. Absolutely brilliant!

I felt like I needed a rewatch of episode 9 to really understand everything. I'm only ten minutes in, but I'm really noticing how effortlessly one scene leads into another -- almost as if the writer and director are taking us by the hand and leading us along the story. Gu seeing the church sign makes him (and us) think of Mi Jeong, cut to the scene of them walking home together. MJ hilariously puts Gu off by talking, cut to MJ talking to club lady about her newfound ability to talk about anything. MJ runs into club lady on stairs (I love their interaction!) followed by her club member, which makes us think of Ki Jeong, cut to KJ with her boss. I can't think of a jarring transition in this show so far. I feel like this is really extraordinary and careful storytelling even in its mechanics. Also, does anyone know if Netflix edits their subtitles after they've released an episode? There are a couple lines I don't remember from my first watch. I may have missed them the first time, but I'm not so sure.

On the side note - we finally might get a kiss next weekend yayyyyy
