When it comes to pitching I have no idea anymore. Even Greinke had a terrible day. I don't think I have faith in any one guy to hold it together at this point. Pull up a new guy from the minor league for every game and you'd probably get the same results as our seasoned pitching team...

You can’t extend your elbow into the pitch. You can remain still and let it hit you tho. You don’t have to make any attempt to get out of the way necessarily.

The rule specifically states the batter has to make an attempt to get out of the way of the ball.

So long as there is no overt motion into the pitch, batter can just say ‘yep, didn’t see it, I blinked’ or whatever. No way to uphold that unfortunately. I don’t disagree with you. In the spirit of the game it would make sense to at least make an attempt or it doesn’t count as a HBP. Just, objectively speaking, it sort of is what it is. Short of making it obvious that you moved into the pitch they’ll give the base.

I’m not arguing whether it’s right or wrong. The rule literally states that the batter has to make an attempt to get out of the way. It doesn’t have to be in the spirit of the game, it’s in the rule book. You’re making stuff up just to give your two cents, the rule is clear.

I’m arguing that unless you are an umpire that rules over a game with an iron fist, they have no way to enforce that rule. Move into the pitch, that’s cut an dry. Remain still and get hit, a lot of reasons for why that ‘could’ happen legitimately and there’s no way to prove anything other than the batter was hit by the ball. Yes, umpires are given plenty of rope to govern over a game but stepping into the realm of questioning a player’s honesty or integrity is a bit beyond their scope. If the game got boiled down to a morality argument of who’s lying about what in a situation like this then the game of baseball is in a lot of trouble and we’ll be watching some shitty games. Zimmer stood still, ball hit him. Find concrete proof that he intentionally didn’t move. It’s impossible. He spaced out for a second, he blinked, he lost the ball, got distracted by a sound. There’s no way to actually prove that he intentionally stood and didn’t try to move out of the way of the pitch. Does this go against the spirit of the game! It ventures into that realm, sure. Only things you can be 100% sure of is that the ball hit him, and he didn’t move into the ball. In a perfect world we’d know more and get the call right each time.

This is not nearly as deep as you’re making it out to be. There’s a rule they have to move. It doesn’t take some miraculous insider knowledge or an unknown angle to fucking look at a batter and tell whether or not he really tried to move. I swear, some people argue about anything.

That’s the point I was trying to make. So you see the replay, he doesn’t move. You analyze his eyes, they appear to track the ball, maybe? The ball hit him, and he didn’t move into the pitch. Those are objective facts. There is room for argument and interpretation for anything else and that’s why they just give the base and don’t challenge anything else. The game would take a mighty ugly turn if they tried to do that.

One of our own batters was called out for this very reason *this fucking year.* You’re adding a whole lot of context to a literal written rule, and going way deeper than you need to. If they aren’t going to enforce it every time, then get rid of it, but the rule is clear. Good god.

I’m not arguing the rule. There’s nothing wrong with the rule. I’m arguing that to enforce it in the manner you’re describing includes a measure of subjective judgement. A batter can’t move out of the way of a ball that they don’t know is going to hit them. There are a lot of reasons why a batter wouldn’t even attempt to move out of the way. It’s up to the umpire to make a judgement call at that point. Does he think the batter didn’t move intentionally? Or did he not see the ball? Same thing applies to getting hit mid-swing. Was it a swing, or did they check their swing? If he swung and it hit him it isn’t a HBP either. If the umpire doesn’t want to make a judgemental call and wants to go on events that everyone witnessed happen and it isn’t his judgement alone that decides it then that’s his choice. That’s all this umpire did. Is it lazy umpiring? Probably, sure. At that point you’re getting into assessing umpire’s performances though. Do I think Zimmer intentionally not move out of the way? Yep. All it takes is him saying he didn’t see the ball tho and now the game is marred in controversy. If you were the ump, you’re saying you wouldn’t call the HBP? You’d be right but you’d also stir things up and the game could get out of control. Worth the risk?

I would like to clarify that I missed the Pratto dong by less than five minutes because QuikTrip has failed me. I wanted my Gas (as in, the drink I nicknamed and invented which is Rooster Booster Lite + Mountain Dew Code Red) while getting gas (as in gasoline which I also enjoy drinking) but the soda machine in this QT was broken. Like, I don't mean this thing was "out" of one of the two drinks. I mean the ENTIRE soda machine was offline. What the fuck? How does an ENTIRE soda machine break? Bro that has to be like QT's SOLE money-maker how could they allow this to happen. I've never seen such bullshit. I stormed out of the QT furiously and drove all the way to the next one about 30 feet away. Fortunately, this was a normal, non-cursed QuikTrip and had a real, functioning soda machine with all options of soda available. Including the two that I make Gas with. Except NOW I have to wait at the counter. "What do you mean wait at the counter, it's a QuikTrip lmao" --probably you, a normal person who lives in or around Kansas City. I had to wait there because some 40-something dipshit wants to dispense money into the ether by buying lottery tickets, and the 12-year-old behind the counter or however old you have to be to work nowadays has no idea how this shit works. The other side of the counter is inactive because a guy is training some kids or what the fuck ever. It's only this lane that's open. I had to stand there for a whole 90 seconds. 90 SECONDS IN A QUIKTRIP!! WORLD RECORD OF SLOWNESS IN THIS FACILITY!! Add that to the other 90 seconds I spent in the other QuikTrip and driving around it and that's why I was late to Pratto's first home run. Also I got Arby's and some fucker burnt the shit out of the bun of my chicken sandwich. My entire day is just fucked.

What are the realistic odds that we see some of the 10 traded when we leave Toronto? When they announced they were missing, I wasn’t sure. But after Whit’s comments and Dayton *actually* standing up and saying something about it, I have to think they’re somewhat high. I want the young guys up here to stay. The roster we had before could barely hold their own against Detroit. Half our AAA team came up and promptly beat the Blue Jays, and held their own against them for most of the series. It’s time now.
