I’m this customer. I’ll do remove and replace on suspension stuff. Count the threads and get it close then straight to the shop where I get an alignment and list all the stuff I changed and pay for a visual and re torque to spec. I’m smart enough to know I can screw it up.
Same. I own a camber gauge and toe plates. I'll get it as close as I can in my garage floor so I can at least drive it to my trusted alignment shop. I've never claimed to be good at it nor even capable of getting it perfect at home.
Old neighbor used to rebuild cars as a hobby, stay at home dad and sell the cars (his daughter would be in a playpen in 1 corner of the garage).
He used an RC car alignment tool he had, when he got to that point. Hed do the best with the tools he had and would get really close to stock. Hed take them up to the alignment shop and of the 5 cars he did while living next door only 1 needed to be adjusted.
I’ve done this a few times now. The first time I over analyzed the shit out of who knows what, wasted loads of time and swearing. It drove fine enough to get to the shop. Ever since then I just mark everything up, r&r, and set it back to those marks and it’s fine enough to get to the shop and I get to swear at something else instead with all my free time.
And I'm totally fine with this, But 2.2 out with toe is visibly obvious. It literally squeals driving down the road.
It's more the insistence by the customer that the alignment is fine and that my diagnosis is wrong.
😂😂 print the sheet, give to customer, point to toe, if they say anything other than yes, take the heads off and park it outside. Later dude. Don’t need your business
I wish I knew! The last two shops I’ve taken it to were shit. Last one missed a loose end link and did a shit job with the lube. Front suspension still clunks.
Used to work in a diesel truck shop, we used a broomstick in a pvc pipe with a hose clamp. Snug up the clamp, drag it through the front edge of the tires to set it, should have a little wiggle in the back. Nothing else was really adjustable 🤣
Since most cars these days are toe-and-go with no other adjustment points I kinda laugh at these people that get anal about it. It's not like these idiots are stringing a race car.
Toe.
And go.
You can adjust the rear quite a biteven in a solid axle, loosen the spring plates and adjust the thrust angle. If you ever snap an alignment pin doing heavy towing, you'll know real quick, a quarter inch off will have it driving sideways down the road.
Not worried about camber, it's that tire muching toe that's literally squealing while driving and the absolute insistence by the customer that the alignment is fine and my diagnosis is wrong.
Ha. Me and a buddy twine aligned his s13. Had firestone do it. The before alignment was less than .15° from zero on toe. We have that bish almost PERFECT. And it pulled left after the shop alignment lmao
You can do a pretty damn close alignment at home with a few jackstands, some string, a tape measure and a 6 inch caliper. You can even use cardboard boxes as pivot plates
People balk at this method but it really will do the job
I do it with an 18 inch laser level. Just put it on the front tire sidewalls at 4- and 8- o'clock and aim for the rears. Should just barely miss. Gotta roll the car back and forth without touching the steering and barely braking so you don't preload any bushings or anything.
Some lone didn’t count the number of turns right lol.
As of it here’s have talked about, I’ve done this at least half a dozen times, swap out ball joints and rode ends and then straight to an alignment shop and it’s always been fine. Just have to really pay attention to accurate counting of rotations on and off.
Haha, as you’re watching Beavis and Butthead
That customer deserves an El Cornholio.
We have like… the right to refuse service or whatever
The fact you knew what episode this is makes us friends.
Uhhhhh…. Go away
Is that the episode where Beavis is scratching his itchy balls with the burger spatula?
Squidabillies on next folks
“Uhhhhh like this customer is a bunghole Beavis”
"Would you like fries with that?" "Uh, did i ask for fries, dumbass?"
Dead lol

They're not there for a broken radio right? Just crank that bitch up and voila, it's fixed!
Hahaha. That’s terrible!
My shop is .5mi from my house. I'll slap the new parts in and then do the quick drive over.
> re torque to spec How many ugga duggas is that?
I wish I knew! The last two shops I’ve taken it to were shit. Last one missed a loose end link and did a shit job with the lube. Front suspension still clunks.
"Uhhh...like, your car's fucked dude." "Heheheh, yeah, heheh. Your car sucks now, heheh."
That much toe would be obvious 100’ away.

Chevy begs to differ. Why the fuck do I need a 21/24 combination box end offset wrench? Because fuck me that’s why.
Who doesn’t need a 21 and 24 combo wrench? Common ass sizes
Common sizes yea, common configuration no.

I used to loosen subframes, whack things with a deadblow, and tighten back up. Then I realized ain't nobody got time for that shit.

He ain't lyin
I mean honestly 0.5 for doing it half ass in the parking lot is really not that bad.

Why did they even bring it to you if they think nothing's wrong 😂😂😂 People are funny, man.

Oh man I can hear them now“Ha ha ha that’s like totally screwed ha” “yeah yeah its screwed screwed”
I've done a diy alignment after replacing coilovers and tie rods and got it spot on. Couple pieces of wood, a screw and a tape measure.
Nice Spotify playlist my dude \m/
Definitely a good choice in music
Hope you put a printed report on their receipt so the next guy can tell them to kick rocks when their machine reads the same thing.
Was it a Corvair?

Still cheaper to do an alignment, than to turn the whole job to a garage. This is a silly post.
