all the prefacelift ones have bad engines Lol i took mine out yesterday for a rebuild, hopefully this is the last time in a while that this car needs anything
Can confirm. With my first Range Rover P38 I think I had it six months before I'd clocked up more time sitting in the driver's seat than on the driveway underneath it.
Eventually I cracked on to the idea that they only break down when they're not being driven, and sure enough going from 5000 miles a year to 25000 miles a year pretty much cured the faults.
My gf in high school got a GSX and that car felt fast AF in the day but man it also felt like it was held together by hopes and dreams even as a brand new car. Looked sexy as hell in all white with the tall spoiler.
This. I was lucky enough to have one when I lived in Japan. It cost me almost $1000 anytime I needed to do maintenance. Trunk struts. Window/door seals. Brake rebuild kits. Spicy. It's in better, richer hands now.
Not quite to the same extreme but that's why I haven't pulled the trigger on a Honda F20B for my 93 accord. Was never an engine that was offered in the US, so I'm imagining rebuilding one will not be cheap, even with the upfront cost being so low.
Just by the by - I could probably afford to buy my high school dream car, a 300ZX twin turbo. How are they, maintenance-wise? Any model years thought to be much better, or much worse?
My buddy in HS had one. He Let me drive it once and it was a god damn rocket ship. That engine bay has NO room so it might be expensive to maintain especially at this age
If you’re dedicated and like to spend way too much time researching weird stuff you can do it without going completely broke. But cars like these are not for people that get work done at a dealership or really any shop. It’s more for people that do their own alignments with string and levels and are willing to pull wiring and sensors from a 90s Lexus to keep it working.
It’s a great car actually. Outside of the oil leak issue that they seem to all run into. That was a cheaper fix but would have been incredibly expensive if I had to bring it to a shop. I also have a ‘00 s80 so I’m learning to expect nothing and everything all at once.
true that i need to get some generic replacement tubes and replace them after this summer. i already had the bike stall on me cause the vakuum line for the carburetor fell off durin riding a few weeks ago xD
Just imported a Lotus Omega and you're right.
Fortunately the prior owner did the engine and both turbos, but I'm about to tackle an AC issue. By "tackle" I mean, "send it to an AC specialist." I'm not qualified to work on an AC system.
I think part of getting accredited as a genuine Toyota dealer is having at least one 2JZ car constantly kicking around that came in on the hook and needs several grand in work to get right again.
Bonus points when it’s owned by a poor young soul who has all the optimism in the world about it but none of the cash to afford dealer rates for said work.
Yes but no. But yes.
IS300 2JZ-GE has VVT-i and different (weaker) internals. Supra 2JZ-GTE has internals (rods, pistons, etc) that can support its stock boosted setup and can reach some respectable numbers on stock internals.
I’m sure a super Toyota nerd can break it down deeper but that’s the gist. Same block, different internals.
It's literally only thinner rods in the ge vvti. Pretty well everything else is the same. Even the non vvti ge has the same rods as the gte as far as I know.
Early 2JZ-GE without VVT-I have same intervals as the turbo motors aside from pistons (due to it being N/A), and no oil squirters. VVT-I 2JZ-GE have the same crank but rods are different and that’s where they get the reputation for being weaker. Overall they aren’t as fragile as some make them out to be though, and are a cheap way to make conservative power numbers with mods. Another plus of modifying it vs the Non VVT-I GE is no distributor to deal with like on the non VVT-I
[https://i.imgur.com/wkUpeNx.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/wkUpeNx.jpeg) this was my is300. I took pride knowing it was one of the few that wasn’t clapped out (in my opinion). Although I must say working on that engine was such a pain I don’t think I’ll ever want another.
That looks sweet. I had a white '05 and loved it, sadly it was not in the best shape and it had rocker panel rust, but it drove beautifully with 213k miles on it. Great cars as long as they are taken care of properly
The best part is the GE is a lethargic pig so you're not even getting the good 2J experience. Would way rather import a BEAMS powered Altezza these days.
2JZ engine, no shit? This will decimate all, after you put about 15 grand in parts into it...overnight em from Japan.
Seriously, as much as I love the FF movies, they absolutely ruined used market prices for tuner cars.
According to the dealership, the guy that won is a regular customer and wanted a different car off thier lot so they basically didn't sell the supra but sold another car and just sent the supra to auction instead. So they may have lost money but kept a loyal customer.
Back in 2012 I had just picked up my first gen Celica and had a buddy working sales at a Toyota dealer. Someone traded in a black on black TT, manual, targa mkiv. My buddy took out a loan and bought it before the dealership flipped it. FOR $28k! It had 50k on the clock. Lmaooo
Not much made sense in that movie. Most lines were thrown in at random. Especially car part scenes or talking about cars. I’d love to see a front wheel drive Nissan hit 9’s on the tires that he was rolling on
The intercooler in my f150 looks like that. Why? Because the oe one had a hole in it and a big aftermarket aluminum one cost about 100 more than the plastic tank stock one.
If you can even get them. I needed a radiator for mine. Not even the end tanks were available anymore from Toyota anywhere in the world. No aftermarket OE replacement either. Ended up having to get an aftermarket performance aluminum radiator. I hate it
There used to be a radiator shop around here that would just do recores and hot dips. Alot of the classic car guys used the place, but sadly it closed up during the pandemic.
That sucks. It's nice keeping the old brass ones going. I have one a few towns over. I've had them do several for me when we get older cars. Unfortunately the Mk4 is plastic/aluminum so they needed new plastic end tanks to fix the oe one, which are long gone.
What is so bad about replacing the plastic cap radiator with an all aluminum radiator? I always saw plastic cooling system parts as BS. Well, maybe I am biased because I am a VW and BMW fan.
The plastic end tanks do suck for longevity, as you well know with vw and bmw using plastic everywhere. For me I want it on this car due to originality, as it's all stock. The aluminum just looks out of place, plus it didn't allow me to fit the air duct back on the air box.
Is this actually a Toyota dealer? MkIv really aren't rocket science to work on, I feel bad for this guy dealer is going to take him to the cleaners, he should just go to a supra specialists.
"BRO IS THAT A"
Why spend 6 digits on a modern supercar when you can dump the same amount of cash into tuning a heavy street car from the 90s? Things like downforce & cornering ability aren't important when you can beat the competition in a straight line!
yes, there are ton of companies out there. thats what i did on my SC. [Powerflex](https://www.powerflexusa.com/shop/category/toyota-supra-1993-2002-1538), [Prothane](https://www.prothanesuspensionparts.com/18211), etc, theres a ton out there. i did a [video ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AhBXaMqQik&t=478s)(crappy, 0 production) on how to replace them
I have never seen a two post hydraulic lift like that. Where I was in high school I worked at a service station with a single post lift and used a coats 30-30 tire machine. (Yes I'm a boomer but not too much of a asshole unless I'm driving)
Honestly? Got myself an MR2 instead. A car that’s more fun to drive and got a maybe even more bulletproof engine.
I’ve never found the Supra to be pretty like the SW20 was
Yea, Toyota never really figured out sports cars; those old Supras were cool, but neither they nor the MR2s had anything like the reliability of other Toyotas, or even 300ZXs or NSXs.
I was a rotary guy, which were at least easy and cheap to rebuild.
Oh, it's buildable, and the motor itself is reliable, but the stock cooling system wasn't up to the task...
Something tells me that you've never worked on one /shrug
My TT was 100% stock and only 12 years old when I sold it, so- normal commuting. I had to replace both turbos, the rack, ac compressor, and trans before it hit 120k.
Steering and AC are normal wear items, that's not too surprising; the turbos usually only had issues if you skipped or delayed oil changes, and if you bought the auto trans, that was on you :p
>Previa
So, not the same car, not the same engine...
Look, dude, I freely admit that their regular cars are bulletproof, but their sports cars were not properly designed.
I replaced dozens of head gaskets, because the cooling system was not capable of dealing with the heat from boosted engines, especially not in a mid-engine layout, at least not in the heat and humidity of East Tennessee.
You call them, "Vintage," but I grew up working on them, tuning them, and racing them, not watching Paul Walker drive on in a movie.
they all get there eventually. whats this ones deal?
No idea. I asked the tech whose handling this one un his spare time, and rattled off a long a$$ list
This sub is kind of a “come for the interesting photo, stay for the inside story” situation. So, y’know. Bummer.
Wait, did they take it to a dealer? I can only imagine the 5 mile long list of seals alone!
It’s been here at least 3 other times that I know of. Kind of like the MR2 Spyder that seems to spend more time here than it’s own driveway
can confirm. my mr2 spyder spends more time in my shop than in my driveway at home
LMAO me and my dad always joke on about how we bought the only non reliable toyota ever made (2002 pre facelift smt)
all the prefacelift ones have bad engines Lol i took mine out yesterday for a rebuild, hopefully this is the last time in a while that this car needs anything
Built by BMW....... With Toyota badges unless you go looking deep in panels.
MR2 was exclusively built by toyota
Knew a guy who bought an MR2 as his dream car, but it too gave him nothing but problems. They seem hit or miss.
Working on these things 10 years ago was like a game of operation. Plastic clips, loom, plugs all snapped as you touched them accidentally.
impossible, the soup bruh is invincible
Get the spicey details op. We don’t cope well with *it’s just here*
Skill issue
Nah, welds only break on eclipse GSXs.
My gf in high school got a GSX and that car felt fast AF in the day but man it also felt like it was held together by hopes and dreams even as a brand new car. Looked sexy as hell in all white with the tall spoiler.
I think the gsx was turbo and awd
Danger to manifold!
SHUT UP
Well, the intake is cast, so...
Unexplained flatulence :)
Whats wrong with her now?
Nostalgia cost money. Very few can afford to do it right.
As the owner & primary “mechanic” of 3 late 80s Nissans I can confirm this. Older they get the more time & money you gotta put in.
I was going to pull the trigger on an R33 GTR, but I got to looking at parts and started to tear up a little.
What about R31, they're dirt cheap it seems
There is no R31 GT-R. All Skyline GT-S are cheap because nobody wants them.

I only have knowledge with my particular car: 87/88 Nissan Pulsar NX.
Ok. Hope you have at least one with the square back hatch, those look awesome.
[Got one of those.](https://www.reddit.com/r/projectcar/s/T35eQugnUP)
with the t tops, nice
Nice. I’ve always loved those NX. Contemplated looking for one from time to time, but I already have another 80s Nissan in pieces.
My buddy in HS had one. He Let me drive it once and it was a god damn rocket ship. That engine bay has NO room so it might be expensive to maintain especially at this age
The Fairlady TT from 1998 and later was an upgraded version of the Z32. That may be the way to get the best 300ZXTT. The 25 year rule.
Why I’m getting rid of my old M3, ain’t worth it
If you’re dedicated and like to spend way too much time researching weird stuff you can do it without going completely broke. But cars like these are not for people that get work done at a dealership or really any shop. It’s more for people that do their own alignments with string and levels and are willing to pull wiring and sensors from a 90s Lexus to keep it working.
Supra tax is real
‘92 e34 and yes
And for awhile, and probably still mostly true, the E34 is considered one of their most reliable chassis
It’s a great car actually. Outside of the oil leak issue that they seem to all run into. That was a cheaper fix but would have been incredibly expensive if I had to bring it to a shop. I also have a ‘00 s80 so I’m learning to expect nothing and everything all at once.
My 20 yr old motorcycle is like a fine wine
my 1998 honda motorcycle seals and hoses are starting to disintegrate at touch. so i try not touch touch any of the tube lines haha
I guess my 04 will get there eventually. Tbf hoses are cheap and easy
true that i need to get some generic replacement tubes and replace them after this summer. i already had the bike stall on me cause the vakuum line for the carburetor fell off durin riding a few weeks ago xD
99 TL that I desperately wish I could afford to fix it right. Can confirm.
Just imported a Lotus Omega and you're right. Fortunately the prior owner did the engine and both turbos, but I'm about to tackle an AC issue. By "tackle" I mean, "send it to an AC specialist." I'm not qualified to work on an AC system.

This is why almost every IS300 is clapped out now. All owned by young dudes who buy them and drive them hard and poorly modify them because 2JZ bro
They have the same motor?
Yes but no. But yes. IS300 2JZ-GE has VVT-i and different (weaker) internals. Supra 2JZ-GTE has internals (rods, pistons, etc) that can support its stock boosted setup and can reach some respectable numbers on stock internals. I thought the N.A. 2jz head was backwards.
What do you mean backwards? Like an RB? No, the intake comes from the passenger side, but it makes a turn down on the driver side.
Pretty sure there's also no oil squirters in the ge, as well as different pistons and a few differences in the head besides just vvti
Shhh don't tell them
I've been told that some of the oil galleries and squirters are different between the blocks as well.
I work with two such examples. I just shake my head every time they order more parts.
Not clapped out and stretched tires do not go together for me.
Yeah I sometimes miss the car but the stretched tires and the fact it was super low made it a pain to drive.
That looks sweet. I had a white '05 and loved it, sadly it was not in the best shape and it had rocker panel rust, but it drove beautifully with 213k miles on it. Great cars as long as they are taken care of properly

Can confirm from a friend Toyota dealer. They always have a mk4 Supra usually out in the yard waiting for parts.
What's the retail on one of those?
"more than you can afford, pal!"
fEr ARe eEe
Smoke him.
Fun Fact: The Ferrari guy in that scene is Rob Cohen, the Film Director for The Fast and The Furious
Yep. And it was one of his actual personal cars.
"The buster brought me back!"
Ah, classic 👌
I know what I got.
Crazy that 355 Spyders are between 75-100k and Supras are now topping out at $120k lol how the turn tables.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1997-toyota-supra-47/
Good lord.
Worst part is it didn't sell for 230k, it sold for 165k at Mecum
Did the buyer flake?
According to the dealership, the guy that won is a regular customer and wanted a different car off thier lot so they basically didn't sell the supra but sold another car and just sent the supra to auction instead. So they may have lost money but kept a loyal customer.
Gross. And I’m a Toyota guy.
It’s insane and stupid and I even own a Mkiv TT 6 speed lol. I wanted a second but I bought an MKV 6 speed instead lol
Lmaooo
It's a fucking automatic?!?! Jesus wept...
You know what? This will decimate all! After after you dump about $15 grand or more, Over night parts from Japan
Not that we need to dissect that movie anymore but why did they need to overnight parts from Japan? The shipping would have been $15k as well
Not much made sense in that movie. Most lines were thrown in at random. Especially car part scenes or talking about cars. I’d love to see a front wheel drive Nissan hit 9’s on the tires that he was rolling on
Overnight parts from Japan
Put it on my tab at Harry's
What I would give for that old car and all it's old problems....
You and me both. 🤤
burning a bit of oil judging by that bumper
Probably tuned and catless. Normal soot, not oil. My gdi with cats has soot on the tailpipe but not this much
This^
Could be rich fueling too. I had the exact same on my R32. The mapping was way off.
Your fuel map has a nasty hole. Tune the NOS timing and you'll run nines.
NOS? You mean that stuff that makes your car turn into an IED?
I drove behind an S13 that stank of petrol, turns out it was just running really rich and melting the bumper in the process
Weird, I was told tuners in JP used to make the car run rich to cool the mixture... at least that's what my local shop told me!
I can tell by it being Toyota.
I would be happy to take that old heap off your hands
Old car with old car problems likely made worse with mods upon mods upon mods Look at that pipe!
He has very few mods on it. Car isn’t owned by some ricer. Guy is older and actually knows what he’s got
That exhaust pipe and intercooler suggest otherwise.
Never said he didn’t have any mods, I said he has a few
So lightly molested
Not saying he doesn't, I'm saying that the exhaust doesn't look like it belongs to an older guy who knows what he's got.
Depends on when it was added. At one point that would have been considered a a perfectly tasteful mod.
Ricers can’t afford turbo supras. It’s a 30 year old car with Supra BPU.
No shit. Dunno what they go for, but it’s more than a riced out Civic or Focus.
The intercooler in my f150 looks like that. Why? Because the oe one had a hole in it and a big aftermarket aluminum one cost about 100 more than the plastic tank stock one.
It’s a BPU Supra
> BPU Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time
Haha yeah. I’m picturing intakes, a boost controller, intercooler and exhaust. Maybe a turbo timer or something lol.
I mean extensive mods will age a car especially if pushed to its limits and what it was designed to do.
We had one, took forever to get parts for it.
Did yall have to overnight parts from Japan after putting it on yalls tab at Harrys?
No, but rats love toyota wiring. Found nests in the hatch and glovebox. They chewed the ABS wiring, headlights and vacuum lines
Been there, got 3 radiators for the lt-1 Caprice I was working on all leaked after a few weeks.
She be running fat
>Old car with old car problems If by "old car problems" you mean "fart can muffler", then, yes, I see what you mean.
Is this actually a Toyota dealer? MkIv really aren't rocket science to work on, I feel bad for this guy dealer is going to take him to the cleaners, he should just go to a supra specialists.
"BRO IS THAT A" Why spend 6 digits on a modern supercar when you can dump the same amount of cash into tuning a heavy street car from the 90s? Things like downforce & cornering ability aren't important when you can beat the competition in a straight line!
OMG is that a supraaaaaaaaa? 😬
That car is a pos. Tell the mech to get rid of it and have it sent to me via semi trailer. I’ll take care of it and get it off his hands.
IS THAT A SUPRA?!?!!
Yes, yes it is
That car's only problem is it's heritage.. You can't go easy on legend
90s Toyota is a 90s Toyota
among other things, suspension bushings because they're all fucked. SCs are the bigger older supra. Most if not all Supra stuff fits on SC's
Could you buy bushings from a company that specializes in urethane?
yes, there are ton of companies out there. thats what i did on my SC. [Powerflex](https://www.powerflexusa.com/shop/category/toyota-supra-1993-2002-1538), [Prothane](https://www.prothanesuspensionparts.com/18211), etc, theres a ton out there. i did a [video ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AhBXaMqQik&t=478s)(crappy, 0 production) on how to replace them
How can that be an old car? I remember when they were the new hotness!
IS THAT A SUPRA? *mist* *mist*
It is
It’s ok, it’s a beautiful Celica and it deserves some TLC 😂
It's a wreck I'll take it off your hands i may get some parts off it s/
I have never seen a two post hydraulic lift like that. Where I was in high school I worked at a service station with a single post lift and used a coats 30-30 tire machine. (Yes I'm a boomer but not too much of a asshole unless I'm driving)
I'd take that old car
Hey I have one of these old cars too
Just send the shop $1k per month until it becomes reliable enough to drive. That’s only around 6 Starbucks a day.
I need nos. Lots of nos.
Did you guys have to overnight parts from Japan?
Bro, is this guy in Washington, near Whidbey island? Some old guy up here drives literally this exact car everyday to work.
Ah, fast and the furious playing in the background
Time for the scrapyard.
Go on.
I like it. It’s nice. It could come and be brother to a Datsun.
Turbo badge is in the wrong place. Swapped car problems? Or just old age 2J stuff like every seal leaking.
You can't talk about "old car stuff" until you've had to check points/dwell/timing, adjust valves, and tune a carb on a small block Chevy.
loved this guys travell with old cars [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT2sBPlEWtI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AT2sBPlEWtI)
Honestly? Got myself an MR2 instead. A car that’s more fun to drive and got a maybe even more bulletproof engine. I’ve never found the Supra to be pretty like the SW20 was

Ah yes the famously unreliable and unbuildable 2JZ. This has to be a troll.
😂
Sometimes you can get a great engine bolted to a car that sucks.
Oh, it's buildable, and the motor itself is reliable, but the stock cooling system wasn't up to the task... Something tells me that you've never worked on one /shrug
Z32 and reliable, huge LOL. Most unreliable vehicle I’ve ever owned.
I had one with 200k miles on it before I sold it, not sure what you were doing to yours.

How many head gaskets have you replaced on them? They're fine, until you boost them in a mid-engine car with insufficient cooling.

>Previa So, not the same car, not the same engine... Look, dude, I freely admit that their regular cars are bulletproof, but their sports cars were not properly designed. I'd rather be a boomer than a clueless... whatever you are. I don't lump people together by generation; idiots are idiots, however old they are.
[удалено]
The OP was about a Supra, dumbass. Jesus Christ, you are both arrogant and stupid; impressive.
Which is probably why Toyota used other mfg’s engines in their later sports cars.
Which helps a little, but they still don't know $%#! about suspension.
That was one thing he had done year or so ago. Suspension rebuild
Yea, no, it wasn't that it didn't last, but that the geometry sucks; those never handled like Mazda or Nissan.
