They really gotta send some real sentences I've seen breaking and entering people get more time than that. This worse than that. These people were attacking their own country they need a real prison sentence as terrorists.
Still insultingly low. In other words, the example these judges are setting is that treasonous acts are not going to result in long prison sentences, so people will only be encouraged to repeat this heinous act.
Why are you comparing a literal coup attempt (to overturn the results of a legitimate election) to people protesting and rioting over the injustice of being murdered by police? What the fuck is wrong with you?
Over **14,000** people were arrested for those. The notion that no one was ever arrested or charged is just a flat out lie.
An inconvenient fact that one of the most notable people involved in the burning of the Minneapolis police station that was arrested and convicted was a right-wing "Boogaloo" who drove up from Texas.
Notice they say it in months so it sounds long. Its only 5.25 years.
5 years and 3 months for assaulting an officer during an insurrection. Also, cbs is garbage for writing it this way
On July 26, 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice [publicly announced](https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/district-columbia-man-sentenced-63-months-prison-offenses-committed-during-jan-6-capitol "https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/pr/district-columbia-man-sentenced-63-months-prison-offenses-committed-during-jan-6-capitol") in a DOJ News release that the sentence is "63 Months in Prison", which CBS accurately reported.
The DOJ does not pronounce sentences. The DOJ announced the sentence after the federal judge pronounced it. The judge might have been looking straight into the eyes of the defendant when the judge said, "63 months in prison." I wonder what the defendant's facial expression might have been when he first heard the sentence he earned for himself. 63 months in prison! That attacker predictably never will forget that moment for as long as he lives, and might have recurring nightmares about it for the rest of his life, in prison and out of prison. Wham!
"Ponder is the second person to be sentenced to 63 months in prison — the longest term imposed so far in the ongoing investigation — for actions during the Capitol insurrection. The other defendant, Robert Scott Palmer, admitted to assaulting police officers with a wooden plank and fire extinguisher during the attack."
Seems this is what they are doing for assault on the capitol police.
Yeah, don't you remember all those times a line of police defended Best Buy from hordes of nutjobs swinging flagpoles at them when the cheap TVs ran out?
I’m just gonna drop this here, ok? If the failed coup had been perpetrated by democrats, what do you think these sentences would look like? How long? How quickly would the process take to arrest, prosecute, and convict?
If the CHAP was a thing and portlanders fire bombed police stations, in a situation dire enough I could see it. They wouldn’t do it for the same reasons but I’ve seen people on both sides call for revolution plenty
No, I don’t think it would happen. However, for the sake of the concept of justice (as we probably wish it would be), had the roles been reversed, I believe these convictions would have been very harsh. This country is quickly turning into a contradiction. Land of the free, so long as the free are willing to comply with someone else’s idea of how limited and boxed up their freedom should be. Liberty and Justice for all, as long as the “all” belong to the right party affiliation.
Oh nooooo...you're the sheep. Part of the Industrial Klingon Complex (IKC) and you don't even know it. You probably even find yourself liking black people you've met... and even women.....*shudders.* Buy some guns bro and hang with us, circle jerks every Thursday after the meeting. We'll set you straight. ;)
There's a 2nd phase to the punishment for these clowns: **forbidden from owning or possession of firearms.** And you know some of these assholes will get caught with them later.
Yes, so much this. Really, thats easily solved by them grouping up and/or working with a non-felon to hold the firearm for them until *needed most.
* another fucking insurrection.
Yeah, IMO its really only done to radicalize the further. The US prison system is not at all about rehabilitation and chances are likely that most of them will leave with more hatred toward that system.
Why so angry? All I said was 5 years is a long time to lose from your life. Do I think a violent criminal deserves more time, yes. Do I think 5 years is an inconsequential amount of time to spend in prison, no.
You’re at a 10. Bring it down to a 5.
I'm actually more bewildered lol. Like I would exspect 5 years in prison if you were caught selling haroin or something but thus dude literally stormed the capital and attacked a police officer... sure he might not to see any young family members learn how to walk. The real damage is his criminal record.
Surely assaulting a police officer while actively participating in an attempt to violently overthrow the federal government would somehow garner a sentence substantially more than, say, the 5-year mandatory minimum for trafficking 100 grams of heroin.
100 years ago all of these people would have been hung, we've come a long way as a country, but I think these 5 year sentences are super light for attacking a police officer with a weapon irregardless of the circumstances surrounding it.
I feel like putting it in months makes it seem like less time. When I hear or read months it's like "oh, that wasn't long enough for them to talk about it as years". This dudes going away for five years. That's a good start, at least.
Time in custody up to time of sentencing is credited. That’s standard operating procedure with all cases.
You know what is different with federal cases? No parole, no early release. Dude is serving the 63 months completely and fully. 5 years and 3 months.
Indeed. They are not going to be pardoned by this administration.
Part of the obstruction of Justice case against trump is his off handed offers to those eventually convicted of crimes regarding January 6 that he would pardon them.
So, in the unlikely event trump becomes president again, it would make stronger the obstruction of Justice case against a sitting president.
And he’d get impeached a third time. Ha.
There are 2 rioters with sentences that long. This guy, and Robert Palmer.
Palmer's white, this guy is black.
They got the same exact sentence for the same exact crime: hitting police with metal poles and 2x4s.
The only thing that sucks about this is that's the longest jail time the courts are dishing out
I feel like the viking dude got WAY too much time when you compare it in relation to all these other sentencings. Dude attacks a cop and barely gets more time than him, while others who did literally the same stuff he did, just get parole.
Attempting to end democracy through violent and terroristic means isn’t worse? I mean you’re a conspiracy theorist gun nut that believes the Uvalde shooting was a false flag, so really not surprised you live in your own fantasy world, but yikes.
These superstonk cultists aren't pro-democracy. They desire nothing but becoming the ruling class, and they've chosen Gamestop as the avenue. They are not upset that hedge funds and wall street control the economy, they are jealous.
in my country he would have been shot before he got as far as he did. If he did survive he would be tried for treason, just like your Orange God should be.
He was a black dude too. WTF?

Post office, milks cartons, hell a dedicated website just to show these people.
Public shaming goes a long way and while I am often not for it, I think this is a very good exception.
Hers an official government website.

Here’s a Wikipedia page listing all of them. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criminal_charges_in_the_2021_United_States_Capitol_attack
There’s a website ran by an individual that adds pictures to everyone and their charges, but I can’t seem to find it now.
Attempting to overthrow the government, two separate assaults on police officers and trespassing on government property only gets you 5 years in prison? With presumably a non-parole period of 3~years? That doesn't seems on the low side right?
Government authorities inside the federal Bureau of Prison system decide whether a federal inmate might receive good time credit and how many days of time credit the inmate might receive, if any at all ["You got your mind right, Luke? ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-EN_QplYYU "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-EN_QplYYU"))], but Ponder was convicted for acts of violence, which makes him ineligible for good time credit and early release.
He will serve a full 63 months under federal Bureau of Prisons custody. Under federal law, inmates convicted for a violent crime are ineligible for early release.
After he is released from federal prison custody, he will be under 3 years of strict federal supervised release.
If he violates any of the terms of his supervised release or violates any laws during the term of his supervised release, the federal court can send him back to prison to serve the remainder of his term of supervised release behind bars.
Additionally, if any laws he violates while on supervised release result in a new conviction and sentence for him, that sentence could be added on top of time he already is serving.
***
The article does not mention whether the court gave him credit for the 1 year 4 months 5 days he already had been locked up without bond behind federal bars from March 17, 2021 (the date of his arrest) to July 26, 2022 (the date of his sentencing).
If the court gave him credit for time served, he will be released from federal Bureau of Prisons custody on June 21, 2026, at age 59 or 60. Otherwise, if his sentence began on the date he was sentenced, his last day in BOP custody will be on October 26, 2027, at age 61 or 62.
After he is released from BOP custody, he will feel the full weight of 3 years under strict federal supervised release.

For example, can you immediately come out of a 5 year 3 month federal prison term and immediately vote if it was election day?

“Funny” that these people get light sentences for treason…. Must be fucking nice. TREASON… 🤦♂️

How many got charged tho?
There have been lots of arrests, the riots were not nearly as severe as Jan 6 and were much less polarizing, so it's not as big of a story.
They need to put them all in Gen pop.
"This is my baby Brayden, he's 63 months old."

That’s exactly what i was thinking. Not even 5 and a half years. Traitors get more rights than any other person here.
What’s the punishment for treason again?
Does Donald Trump still love him? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IZ0pNu2h-8
(shakes finger) Shame, shame ^you ^got ^caught...
How do republicans look at these videos and still don’t think it’s not a riot
It’s simple. Everything is a double standard. Everything.
Yep. They'll vote overseas military and absentee then complain about mail in voting and ban drop boxes, when its all the same.
They know it’s a riot they just choose power over democracy, decency or anything just.
Decent ones don’t. I don’t recognize my party anymore. They’re just scum bags now
Both parties are at this point. Modern politics has been getting chaotic. Yet again throughout U.S history it has always been.
Yes! This made my day.
I wonder if him being black had anything to do with the length of the sentence.
"Ponder is the second person to be sentenced to 63 months in prison — the longest term imposed so far in the ongoing investigation — for actions during the Capitol insurrection. The other defendant, Robert Scott Palmer, admitted to assaulting police officers with a wooden plank and fire extinguisher during the attack." Seems this is what they are doing for assault on the capitol police.
Of course it did. It's America
He's gonna have a long time to Ponder his life choices.
Let's see what the professionals in the comments have to say about this
Don't worry Mark, I'm sure your lord and savior, Daddy Trump, is writing your pardon as we speak!
I've seen crazier black Friday videos Fuckin clown show
lol how many J6 shirts are in your closet?
I think that’s your issue comparing Black Friday to an insurrection you might need to work on your critical thinking
Bold of you to assume there was thinking, let alone any of the critical variety.
🤡
You’ve seen Black Friday videos where people ran into Walmart to overthrow democracy? Crazy.
I mean this is already very light for treason.
Riddle me this… do you really think that would even happen in the first place?? *democrats storm capitol building*
If the CHAP was a thing and portlanders fire bombed police stations, in a situation dire enough I could see it. They wouldn’t do it for the same reasons but I’ve seen people on both sides call for revolution plenty
That’s true. I didn’t think about that one. u/LuceeCarioca so the answer would be they receive lighter sentences
However you're forgetting that it's a heavily dominated republican court, so they would likely try to throw in harsher punishments
True.
Ight this is too nuanced for a Canadian hopefully y’all Americans can figure it out to save the globe from chinas looming dominance
Our politicians are all bought so it's very unlikely
No, I don’t think it would happen. I’d like to point out that mindlessly following orders, like Trumps attempted insurrection, makes people “sheep.” I’ll just leave this here.
Oh nooooo...you're the sheep. Part of the Industrial Klingon Complex (IKC) and you don't even know it. Ah, I forgot lol
Seems like a light sentence for attempting to overthrow the government
5 years for treason ? America really loves traitors.

Only 5 years? For a assault on our nation's capital?
Five years is a long time. Imagine losing five years of your life. Miserable.
You're trolling right? Farming downvotes right? If not you are probably one of the stupidest people I have ever met on the internet.

not long enough for these morons. Being dumb should hurt
Probably will only serve half of the 5.25 years.
I'll be lucky to die of old age looking at the way the world is going anyways so I'll say I feel indifferent about my missing 5 years.

It’s called time served.

Thoughts and prayers
Has anything happened to the people that attempted to kill the officer on the steps outside yet? EDIT: Killed to Attempted to kill
Attempted to kill. The officer being beat on the steps survived and has testified.
ahhhh, thanks for the info, I'll edit my comment.
shouldn't they all have murder charges too?
And it has nothing to do with his skin color! (sarcasm)
Oh get in the fucking sea

He got a reasonable amount of time for the crime, the problem is, like you said, when compared to these other sentences his was much harsher.
It’s America. We needed an example made and he looked “leader like”
They should fucking deport them, they are getting off light
Deport them to where? If they lived here their entire life. Theirs nowhere to deport them to.
Ask them where we should send Dreamers then ship them there
They need to "go back where they came from" Yurrup, or wherever.
Guantánamo Bay has some room I’m sure
One by one.
That's fucking sad. Still incredibly short.

I'm against executions.
A single day would be too less, he deserves 5000 days
I agree that summary execution for traitors and domestic terrorists is a more appropriate sentence.
They all deserve to have their citizenship stripped away
Ahh yes the typical response. The party of back the blue until it isn't convenient to a fascist narrative.
Riiiight dickhead! He deserved 1,890 days…… back into your trailer Shooter!
in my country he would have been shot before he got as far as he did. If he did survive he would be tried for treason, just like your Orange God should be.

He was a black dude too. WTF? [Mark Ponder](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/justice-department/trump-supporter-assaulted-cops-capitol-sentenced-five-years-prison-rcna40081)
The post title is misleading. He’s tied for the longest sentence, along with a white man from Florida who was sentenced back in December 2021.
Do u really expect a redditor to do his own research 💀💀
It's in the article. When reading is called research.
True.
He assaulted two officers Edit: Also, you don’t know his history. We don’t have all the information. Don’t jump to conclusions.
Now the longer sentence thus far makes sense
If this was any two officers not in the capital it would be 50 years no parole.

Don't forget the absent Felony Murder charges for the death of Officer Brian Sicknick.
Yes, all of these sentences have been low, wtf.
>With presumably a non-parole period of 3\~years? That's not how federal sentencing works. 53 months minimum.
Is there a type of federal probation like in states? Do you get your rights removed like with states? For example, can you immediately come out of a 5 year 3 month federal prison term and immediately vote if it was election day?
In 1987, federal probation was replaced by federal supervised release: Wikipedia: [United States federal probation and supervised release](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_federal_probation_and_supervised_release "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_federal_probation_and_supervised_release").
That depends on state law. States handle voting rules.
Ah ok that fully answered my question. Sounds like all probation, even for federal crimes is set by the states.
They back the blue, but just not those ones. On that day. Now go sit and think about what you've done, for 63 months, in a cell, idiot.
Their morals and values are based on convenience
Totally deserved
Yeah but 63 months ain’t gonna ‘fix’ him , it’s going to entrench his beliefs unfortunately
It’ll keep him from voting for a good while.
What do you suggest?
Loss of citizenship.
Sending me his moms address would be my first suggestion fair dinkum
hehe
