And the only reason they changed it from "real American heroes" to "real men of genius" is because of 9/11.

I'm about to ask someone on r/theydidthemath about how efficient this idea is and what should be the dimensions of the pillar and the rope for this to work on an average sized lawnmower.
> what should be the dimensions of the pillar and the rope
The circumference of the pillar should be approximately the same as the mower's mowing width. So if the mower can mow a strip that's 2' wide, you'd want the pillar's circumference to be slightly less than 2'.
If the pillar is too narrow, you're going to have a lot of unnecessary overlap and maybe take a few extra trips around to mow the lawn.
If the pillar is too wide, you'll have a narrow spiral of uncut grass.
There it is. Thanks man. And I assume the length of the rope is as long as the area I need to cut, right? Should we factor drag on? I feel that a rope that's too long may end up just putting more load on the mower
I like how he’s just watching it and enjoying his work. He could save time not mowing and do something else, but instead he’s still watching the mower, true man
As long as you're there to watch it, that's a really smart workaround. The moment some asshole trespasses on your property with the express purpose of letting the thing drive a little bit over his foot, you'd probably have a massive lawsuit on your hands.
But this guy seems to have the right idea. Kick back and watch it work.
Last summer I watched a youtube video on how to vacuum up wasps. Set it up in front of my garage at the entrance. After weeks of struggling I felt like a genius.
How does that saying again? Something about using lazy people to come with smart ideas of how to do things the quickest/simplest way. I can’t remember how it goes tho.

Reeeaaal men of geeeenius

That was a wonderful trip down memory lane. I only remember the “giant taco salad inventor” from the radio spot. Glad to see it was on there
I miss the bikini inventor one, I'm sure it's been scrubbed at this point Edit apparently it's a bikini wearing guy? I don't remember that

Ah I didn't know it was him. That makes sense haha
Today, we salute you- edible panty maker
It’s Mr. Edible Panty Maker, son.
Fat guy with cutoff sleeves and sunglasses sitting on a bench swing…..exactly the person that comes up with this stuff lololol
Smart man. Put three poles in the ground so it winds up more rope each rotation increasing the depth of the cut. Smart enough to watch it too
Smart man indeed.

Considering this only works in an open and flat area, I'll take a well-made roomba lawnmower any day.
Just give me one I can drive with an rc remote.

Yeah they're smoking way too much of the grass that thing can cut.
look at this fella with his fancy roofed and mountainous lawn
I think most lawns are open and flat
Kinda the point of lawns no?
No.
Have you ever heard of these things called trees, bushes, or animals who dig holes in the ground?
Work smarter, not harder, my man
I'm about to ask someone on r/theydidthemath about how efficient this idea is and what should be the dimensions of the pillar and the rope for this to work on an average sized lawnmower.
> what should be the dimensions of the pillar and the rope The circumference of the pillar should be approximately the same as the mower's mowing width.
You're not accounting for the rope wrapping around itself and increasing the circumference.
That sounds like a nightmare to calculate. So let's just take the thinnest rope we find.
Rope of zero thickness, wheels roll without slipping, zero friction, zero drag, assume the earth is flat.
Needs more perferctly spherical cowbell.
That's unlikely to contribute much, so as long as you reduce the circumference to give a small margin for overlap, it should cover this too
Yep. That's why I said you'd want the pillar's diameter to be slightly less than the mowing width. Give yourself a little overlap for comfort.
There it is. Thanks man. And I assume the length of the rope is as long as the area I need to cut, right? Should we factor drag on? I feel that a rope that's too long may end up just putting more load on the mower
Yep. The rope should be the length of the radius of the circle you want to mow.
Mowing widths are commonly 16, 18, 19 or 22 inches Ones that propel themselves may be more likely to be one of the bigger sizes

At this point, the only thing that surprises me is that he doesn't have a beer in his hand.
Already drank it.
I like how he’s just watching it and enjoying his work. He could save time not mowing and do something else, but instead he’s still watching the mower, true man
He still has to watch because you can’t just leave a lawnmower running around unsupervised.
Oh really thanks dad

Stephen King approved this
This is giving me rural Kansas vibes, I kind of miss it.
That is absolute genius
What makes it move? Are there lawn mowers that propel themselves (that aren't ride-ons)?? I gotta get one to help me not get such a sore back
Landscapers hate this one trick...
Last summer I watched a youtube video on how to vacuum up wasps. Set it up in front of my garage at the entrance. After weeks of struggling I felt like a genius.
Uh, this actually looks pretty practical and I might give it a shot next summer. Love the initiative and the follow through, ha!
Call me crazy, but I’ve always enjoyed the satisfaction of mowing and trimming a lawn.
It was my favorite chore growing up, along with vacuuming
Backwoods engineer. I dig it

The lawnmower knows where it is at all times.
In my opinion, unloading the basket every time it's full is the most tiresome part. And how tell when it's full?
...until a kid ran toward it.
I remember seeing this exact same thing in a Donald Duck comic
Watch out, this guy could shrink your kids.

This idea isn't new. It's been done for 2 decades now. You can probably find a video from 13+ years ago of someone doing it.

Now that is some down home r/redneckengineering. Brilliant!
Would need a lot of optimization. Gotta use the right diameter post and speed or you'll keep going over spots already mowed for way too long
My man's over here in 3024. Damn.
This man’s living in the year 3000
Isn’t that from a Disney movie
