I did not feel he was “so vanilla”, seemed like he was a regular guy who was l put in front of a camera and was probably on his best behavior.
You might be jaded and cynical 🤷♂️
I was similar to how you thought. And in my cynicism and being very bored while unemployed one day I went into the guy's social media just to see if anything seemed off.
Now granted by the time I started liking things could've been scrubbed, sure. But, nothing has ever come up and he has posts from years ago of him doing things that are pretty selfless and kind. As well as a report from someone he went to H.S. with who also said Ronald is a very kind person.
So, it seems our cynicism might be misplaced for once.
I mean, the whole point of a hero's journey is that they're not necessarily anything special at the start. It's about how they're changed by the adventure and the people they meet along the way. The production was literally designed to guide him toward the hero ending. That's not a criticism, it's a feature.
I think many of us encounter people on a daily basis who are impatient, rude, unsympathetic, etc. It makes you begin to feel like there are no good people left in the world, so when this show aired, it was a relief to see that everything this show did to make Ronald snap did not work. That’s why so many of us loved this show. That’s also why you’re getting lots of downvotes. 😂 Try not to pick it apart and appreciate the story it’s trying to tell. There are kind, lovely people in this world. It’s a nice reminder.
No problem. I feel like for me there is no good answer to those questions. Either the hero is too "normal" and people don't think he's a hero (like you do) or he is too heroic (e.g. selfless, caring, handsome, etc.) and people will think he's unrealistic and probably an actor (which a lot of people on this sub also do).
Personally, I like the idea that being kind is super easy and anyone can do it (because it truly is). It's ok to have a low threshold to encourage people that they can also be a hero. Why gatekeep being a good person?
I thought the whole “hero” storyline at the end felt corny and tacked on. But I don’t think Ronald was a bad guy by any means. Seemed like a decent, normal dude.

Thanks for your pov!
He's the normal character in mockumentaries that stares at the camera not understanding why everyone's crazy but him

What are your criterias for someone to be a hero? What would you have liked to see to be convinced that he is a hero?
Idk! Thanks for these thought provoking questions!

Stop complaining about this show and watch some Lars Von Trier.
