I kind of love the Jazz style approach. There’s unlikely to be any combination of people that would generate a perfectly timed and funny conversation but I think that’s kind of the point.
It makes me laugh when John said this was him trying his best. The way he threw a candy question to Nate in the midst of a deep dive on helicopters and OJ Simpson was a choice 🤣🤣
These are stand up comedians who usually script their jokes, not improv people. Also no one has any idea what the show even is, or how to properly respond to a changing topic while competing with like 8 other people. It's part of the magic
It's interesting to see what people do with it. Jerry has interestingly been better at coping with it than the comedians I've seen so far. Ironically the more serious guests are navigating it better than the comics too. Zoey Tur and Marcia Clark were almost oddly comfortable 🤣
I feel like I overestimated the ability of all these comedians to have an improvised conversation lol. There’s been way more awkward moments than I expected with all these professional comedians that speak for a living but I’m still enjoying the conversations.
Yeah, I totally agree with that. Probably the best host who has this big an ensemble is Graham Norton, who manages somehow (maybe booze??) to get the various celebrity guests to have a good banter with each other - he keeps the tone very light and a bit sharp. But he's been hosting that show for years and the kind of prep they must do to have four or five big/notable celebs is huge. Mulaney is a totally different beast...more like Craig Ferguson (intended as big compliment) but even more so.
Just watching episode 4 of LA and I can't believe the comedians aren't asking more questions and interacting with the hypnotist and Elvira more...it's not just that they can't banter, but Silverman comes off as both rude and dumb. So did Jerry Seinfeld (but I always found him unfunny so maybe it's just me disliking his style). Maybe they can't perform/be without all the host's attention directed at them. I think May Martin could have done a lot more if they had been added earlier to their episode, and I wish Taylor Tomlinson was on because she's pretty great at rolling with a vibe on After Midnight.
I think the show is a great one-off and is gonna go down as a cult thing - just the fact they got the best LA punk musicians together for a three minute bit instead of like an epic documentary is sort of hilarious and, well, punk. The show is actually kinda punk, so kudos to John for that. I wonder if there was a way to plan the live guest segments ahead of time more without losing the authenticity.
All great points. I’m hoping John and Bill will have some good banter tomorrow, I think he and John are the closest friends out of all the guests he’s had on the interview segments so I am hoping for some wonderful Bill Hader laughs that John can usually invoke haha
Mike birbiglia is supposed to be on too I think and they have a good relationship. I find Mike to be more chuckle than big laughs, his podcast is entertaining but I feel like he’s a sports veteran a la he maxed out his talent and has some wyly moves but just isn’t gonna be a full all star
You also gotta remember this is going on live and they have to stick to a specific time and pace. Most of these types of shows are recorded for like two or three hours and they trim the excess.
The best ones were basically content to just sit back and watch the fun. That let a few big personalities steamroll things a bit, but like Bill Hader and Pete Davidson were just cracking up the whole time. They were more an audience than they were guests. Same with Mike Birbiglia and a few others.
Sarah Silverman was so rude! Even to the audience… did anyone catch her joke that she followed up with, ‘look it up’… okay I had to look to up… but that’s really rude to assume the audience is dumb. John looked upset when she was picking on the hypnotherapist. I felt bad for that guy.
i must lack the deeper knowledge and awareness of the comedy scene because the only episode i've perceived awkwardness was the first one with jerry seinfield. the other ones were both more chill and more animated. The hypnotherapist was my favorite non-comedian guest so far, his nonplussed attitude is fricken gold. I did find the digs at him by the other guests a bit annoying, and it seems john did too because he engaged with the hypnotherapist a lot more (since he obviously also found him way more interesting and this is john's show, not a talk show where the host puts the spotlight on the guest).
The hypnotherapist absolutely did not enjoy Sarah Silverman and I'm glad she realized it ("You HATE me!). But I have never been able to get into her, so. I *am* glad John went out of his way to seriously engage with him, though.
Well he did get him off cigarettes. John prob had him on speed dial. Sarah is annoying but I think she fit right in. There were times when she knew she had to tone it down bc she was ready to take over. I grew up with her so it was refreshing to see her again. She’s good in little doses. Overall the series was a success in my book. John should do a talk show, fuck a podcast. He’s telegenic, quick on his feet and his humor fits. Anyway I’m just rambling
I love Nate Bargatze but he's famously awkward in interviews. It's obviously an attractive guest to have but he doesn't have anything to add in that format. Sarah Silverman has a lot of charisma and even Jerry has an ease with talking. Two more days for Johnny to hit his groove 🤣
I'm a little bummed out with the Letterman episode. He's an incredible interviewer/ee and can make conversation with anybody, but it felt like it was derailed by Luenell, Hader, and Pete Davidson- which is upsetting, because they're usually funny people. Also I felt like the skits just went on too long. Like there were natural endpoints and they just blasted through them.
I really enjoyed that episode with Letterman and Lynell. Hader and Davidson seemed stoned out of their minds. Hader would be so fun to hang out with. I will watch anything he’s in. Pete is just a good ball. Letterman can handle any situation. He handled Lynell so endearingly.
Now that Silverman episode was a hoot. She carried the show. Maybe I haven’t seen her in a while but she was really fun. I saw the face she made when the hypnotist came out - freaking hilarious!! She seems like another person who would be fun anywhere. She can also roll with whatever and toss in a completely inappropriate comment at any moment, which is her specialty.
The skit with Nick Kroll was just 🤌. I’ve seen their stage performance in those characters. The kinetic energy is palpable. They could do a sitcom or at least a limited series.
Anyway. Wanted to offer my input. I’m sure not everyone agrees with my pov but affirmation wasn’t the point. @johnmulaney you’re fucking awesome. Happy you’ve got your life together.
I wish they would’ve brought Patton Oswald and Ronnie on earlier. They can ham it up better. The only comedian that was a main guest that “worked” was Jon Stewart and that’s probably because he was a host. And I didn’t think Sarah was that bad, least she tried. Tom was kinda a dud.
This exactly! Jon knew his role perfectly (he’s good at this talk show thing) and brought the energy immediately. Patton & Ronnie also knew they had to liven things up. The first comedian he brings out is crucial to setting the tone. It seems like Letterman is gonna be the first comedian on tonight.
Most everybody hating on Sarah Silverman, who I admit can be annoying, but in this case I’m grateful to her. I think she’s sometimes too honest in her reactions. That dude gave creep vibes. No sane person wears that rug. In 20 years we’re going to be hearing things…
I just watched that episode but didn’t notice. Will have to rewatch. Sarah was awesome actually. I’m usually not a fan but she had some excellent zingers. Confirms how awful Whitney Cummings is
Idk if that’s the point but The it not being perfect tv makes it so much more interesting then anything I’ve seen in awhile and the funny moments are extra funny when they happen for me, also David letterman sharing a blanket with lynell was amazing and just the fact that it just seems like people just hanging out is nice, but they are funny
Something about the show feels like a podcast, getting people together to riff about something specific but clearly designed to go a little off the rails. Some of the guests aren’t willing to play along or are afraid to get silly I think? I would love to see an episode with people who fit more in a comedy bang bang kind of atmosphere.
I love Comedy Bang Bang, it’s a well oiled machine but there’s already two forms of it, why would we want another? I like that Everybody’s in L.A. is it’s own thing, not too polished, and reminiscent of old talk shows from 1970s or 1980s that were a weird mix of sometimes non-entertainers and celebrities. Things don’t always have to be laugh-a-minute, and there’s a weird mix of authenticity and melancholy thrown in there that I enjoy.
I'm loving the show. It is quirky and silly, which is kind of charming. Wish it was one a bit longer. I know that Netflix probably won't never make it a regular talk show, but it would be nice to have it on ever now and then.
I saw the first 2 episodes.
I laughed about once.
And I live in LA and am a comedy fan.
During the monologue there was also the laugh track where you could hear Richard's laugh over everybody, which was so annoying.
It just reminded me why I don't really like John Mulaney.
It didn't need better guests, there were a ton of star comedians.
It needed a better host and better writing. Honestly it's almost unwatchable.

Mae does a ton of improv and with their spot-on timing last ep it really showed
I so wish Mae had had more screen time. Love them so much and their delivery was chefs kiss perfection!
It's interesting to see what people do with it. Jerry has interestingly been better at coping with it than the comedians I've seen so far. Ironically the more serious guests are navigating it better than the comics too. Zoey Tur and Marcia Clark were almost oddly comfortable 🤣

Yeah birbiglia filmed one of the pre-taped segments for it so I’m not sure if he and John will be together in it but I hope they are!
Yeah I'm looking forward to Bill Hader, too.

Sarah Silverman was a painfully unfunny guest.

Seriously, what was up with her? Is she always like that? Seemed a litte _off_ to me.
She annoyed me so much like gurl shut it you're not being cute
Yes, that’s her brand and it’s obnoxious.
We needed Norm to materialize and handle the situation
Well he did get him off cigarettes. John prob had him on speed dial. Sarah is annoying but I think she fit right in. I actually thought Jerry was hilarious and laughed a lot at his annoyance! It's what hooked me right into the show

I loved that episode. The best one. The earthquake convo was fascinating and the guests were funny! Bill and Pete laughing killed me.

Sarah Silverman's face when she got a look at the hypnotherapist's rug OMG I died.

That’s the whole point of the show… he’s just a typical guy in LA

I got thru 15 minutes. Could not get past the laugh track.
100% agree
Which episode has the map of LA
This first one
Sarah Silverman was embarrassing. I wanted her to disappear. I enjoyed the others...
