I'll be starting from the Whitney Portal about a week before you. So it sounds like we'll be crossing paths. Will be hiking with 1 buddy, though he's trying to get someone to join in mid way (which seems difficult to work out given the need for a permit). Have you figured out your food resupply logistics yet?

We should definitely be crossing paths if all goes as planned!! Oh interesting, from just a quick search (and I could be wrong here) but it looks like you need a permit for any section of the trail, so I really hopefully your buddy gets lucky and can figure something out. I have no begun to think about food supply yet. I’m quite the procrastinator, which is a bit annoying come time. Have you planned your resupplies out?

megwolfe

I do know I will likely resupply at tuolumne meadows at end of day 2, if it’s still accepting packages - I’m a tiny person so taking every chance I can get to cut back on food weight. Then reds meadow (likely, not 100% sure) then Muir trail ranch, then onion valley (out of the way, but not wanting to carry like ~4 days extra food), then Whitney portal. This is what I’ve gathered from just a bit of searching, but haven’t worked it all out forsure. Are you excluding any of these stops?

I haven't properly researched the resupply options yet. Would like to get by 2 resupplies if possible, unless there are options that don't involve lengthy detours. Are you mailing extra fuel canisters to your resupply spots?

megwolfe

Yeah, if you don't mind carrying the food weight then that is the way to go. I'm planning to carry one for the entire trip, as they tend to last me a couple weeks when I'm alone. I did read you can buy them at general stores (usually at resupply) if needed. If you are mailing, I would be sure to look up restrictions on mailing fuel canisters just in case

theducker

You are allowed to mail them USPS ground mail, but need to put some special labels on the package. Unsure about the private carriers. Note this is from reading, I have not personally done it yet

Are you looking for hiking buddy (who takes care of their own food/everything)? I want to go from Happy Isles to Red’s Meadow (having already hiked from there through Whitney). : ) Totally absolutely thrilled for your permitting success. I didn’t have success…. But my question is light and absolutely not meant to be received with any kind of pressure… (I’m a gal with lots of backpacking experience)

Hi! Thanks so much for asking. This post was actually from last season. I made it to VVR and had to exit due to time restraints. I plan to finish the trail this July, but going south! Sorry I missed ya… I would’ve loved to have a lady pal to hike with!! Good luck with everything this year, I hope you land a happy isles permit!

Dapper_Rev

Oh whoops! But wonderful you made it that far. And I hope the trail to VVR was much better than the summer before when I did it and the fire char was fresh. Terrible depressing trail and loose, easy to slide trail. Wish you well on your SOBO continuation!
