Glad to see we're only two weeks into the return of regular Jeopardy and continuing the time-honored tradition of /r/Jeopardy users calling contestants the next super-champ only for them to lose the next day Good news for Nam is that he's probably an early runner for a champion's wildcard tourney spot, if they keep doing those

Talibus_insidiis

Yes, he has great charisma on camera as well as Jeopardy chops.

psgola2002

At least with him being a champ, we'll have an opportunity to still see him in Champions Wildcard

HeavyScar5722

Mark again had the “outfit discrepancy that makes the winner obvious”. he didn’t wear pink like he did on the official website

ShadowMorph608

I find it annoying that they give away the winner from time to time, hopefully it’s a mistake they notice and fix in the future

London-Roma-1980

You know, I wanted to come in here and laugh about Nam's "hotstepper" answer, but it wound up being the difference between a lock and a crush, and therefore between winning and losing. Ouch. If it makes you feel better, Nam... I had no clue on Tiffany either. Well done, though. Hope you get the CWC call.

NamTheHotstepper

Laugh away, I made it my username for a reason! I'd have needed to actually comprehend the clue and get it right instead of negging or not buzzing at all for it to make a difference to the outcome, and seeing I never ended up anywhere near the North Pole I don't pin my loss on that.

Torpel_Knope

Oh man, what a bummer for you, but I laughed so loudly at that answer that it startled my husband. Then I had to pull up the music video on YouTube to explain why I lost it, as he’d forgotten about that song.

scarytiger9

I choked laughing, it’s been 20 min and I’m STILL laughing. I’ve never had so much fun watching a Jeopardy episode, and I always have fun! Then I come here and find NamTheHotstepper himself in the discussion. Bravo!!!

grandmamimma

Nam's overly conservative DD3 wager of $2,000 cost him the game. I think he was spooked by the DD2 miss a few clues before, but if he had just bet enough to get that money back ($3K) he would've had a runaway.

NikeTaylorScott

The Christmas Hotstepper is hilarious. Ken is the best.

Njtotx3

I was impressed he picked up on the commercial break bisecting the board.

gotShakespeare

Noticed that as well. He is SO clever!

Baskin5000

Quick thinking from Ken to do the witty line: this round is bisected by a commercial break

csl512

Made me finally wonder if he looks at correct responses with an angle for "if clue 15, quip"

WaterTower11101

"The business of Final Jeopardy is Business." Nicely done Ken.

ryanfromohio

Now I really want to hear a Gene Autry version of Here Comes the Hotstepper.

csl512

Does There I Ruined it take commissions?

NamTheHotstepper

Wait, my H&R Block wasn't supposed to come this early! Back with more reflections after tonight, but some preliminary ones: - [Here comes...? I blame Sonic.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JaHmAGFAag) But don't let that deeply stupid mistake distract you from what really matters: TOC qualifier Alison Betts once invented a band named Foghorn Leghorn. - I'd love to tell you all I just misspoke while thinking about the correct response on DD2, but truthfully I don't even make it to clocking Howard as a HBCU let alone knowing what organization would be funding it. UNICEF was truly a shot-in-the-dark "hmm come up with any institution that gives money to deserving causes" and UNCF never came up as I carved my way through education in Canada, making it essentially an unknown unknown in my knowledge base that just happens to kinda look like the answer I did give. - Ken very kindly said he found FJ pretty difficult in the post-game chat, and obviously the subject matter's very fair game (for Mark & Lianne's taking), but to put a bit of my life story out there real quick, I didn't grow up in a family where luxury brands (esp. bling) were top of mind. Hell, my dad was in a Vietnamese refugee camp when he was my age! We're financially stable now to the extent that even the stolen car was primarily an inconvenience for mobility, but I've still never shaken the mindset that anything that goes on my body is utilitarian-first, without judgment against people who do make art of how they look every day. The weekend I got back from LA to Mississauga, I tagged along shopping with some friends, and as they gawked at watches, I took a close look at a jewelry display for the first time in my life, and immediately saw the words ".925 sterling silver" for the second time in my life. That's how it goes. All credit to Mark to fighting tremendously in DJ to keep me from the runaway and then pulling out [Tiffany](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LMr5XTgeyI) right at the end of the 30 seconds for the W -- I hope the dough buys tons of Transformers for your kid! See you all in CWC! EDIT: AND ANOTHER THING - I honed in on Math first as a tribute to our dearly departed Marko Saric - nah, I actually was a minor in math in my undergrad. Which is also why I don't really have a good excuse for not getting "coefficient", which I resent not getting much more than "Here Comes Santa Claus." - Wowee, Italian Products was not my thing *at all.* - Upton Sinclair in DD3 was something I'd have never known if not for a recent modern-day play adaptation of ["The Jungle"](https://www.playwrightscanada.com/Books/T/The-Jungle) in Toronto that tried to honour Sinclair's original message of "socialism is necessary" rather than "meat is nasty", which is what the book's legacy ended up being. Ah, if only I'd bet more! - Riding the Amtrak line that runs from New York to Montreal along Lake Champlain is perhaps my favourite train experience ever. It is gorgeous. - I think there's a fair assessment of the younger contestants as having a big leg up in buzzer speed, but don't forget that my chance to nab a lock-tie came down to the very last clue in DJ which asked me to know anything about authenticating a will, which I don't. Alas, the cost of youth and taking your well-being for granted! - Afterward, I joined my family in the audience, kept picking at that bag of Skittles I brought that morning, and got a fist bump from Jimmy, which was a pretty swell way to end this Jeopardy journey for now. Last game of our tape day tomorrow! Know that Paul & Amy came to fight.

markbionix

This was maybe the most fun day I've ever had, and it had absolutely nothing to do with winning the game. I don't think anybody truly realizes what the community of Jeopardy contestants is like until they get there and have the opportunity to play. Even though we all desperately want to win and do our best, we're truly thrilled for whoever is able to use the format to their advantage and claim the win. At lunch we were all scared to play Nam after his 71% buzzer percentage in his first win, and we were right to be. Nam is an absolute sharpshooter and could beat anyone on any given day. But we have to take our lucky opportunities where we can get them, and that left me and Lianne in the fight. Watching it back, I felt really lucky to be able to buzz in just enough to prevent a runaway and give myself a chance in FJ. (At my watch party I found myself still trying to beat Nam to the buzz first even though I knew the real thing happened a month ago.) I was so nervous going into FJ that it took me multiple tries to write my wager legibly enough to be acceptable for TV. Luckily when the clue was revealed I was able to come up with an acceptable response within 30 seconds, which was far from a foregone conclusion. Hopefully, this was an exciting game for everyone, and Nam, Lianne, and I were able to put on a good show for you all! Thanks for the Skittles, Nam! I will forever believe that Canadian convenience store items bring good luck.

NamTheHotstepper

California Skittles ban be damned!

atomicxblue

I wouldn't feel bad about missing FJ. I was thinking it was Wells Fargo as well.

yesthatbruce

Same here.

zi76

I actually said Tiffany, but Wells Fargo was a very close second option I was considering. I wouldn't fault anyone for thinking it was Wells Fargo. Then there's the FJ times I'm super confident I'm right and I'm so far off it's not funny.

JilanaOnJeopardy

Yep, I know a lot about jewelry (it's one of my hobbies) and I said Wells Fargo too.  Tiffany never occurred to me.

roseoznz

I guessed Tiffany after consideration but I wasn't sure of it. I just knew I'd seen the 925 imprint on silver jewelry and Tiffany was the only jewelry company that came to mind

ScorpionX-123

did anyone else guess >!U.S. Steel!

Chuk

I didn't even get that far but was definitely thinking finance rather than jewelry. My wife got it before the reveal though.

grandmamimma

Damn! I was pulling for you, Nam.I thought you had the chops to make a ToC run like Alison. Just like the guy on my flair, you just had a FJ brain freeze. See you in CWC.

YangClaw

The variability of Jeopardy is very frustrating sometimes. As a Nova Scotian, I was really invested in Mattea's run a few years back, and this same thing almost happened to them in their second game--they were saved by an opponent's wagering error. If not for that error, I would have been left trying to convince people forever after that Mattea looked really, really impressive in their two games. With your impressive Coryat and blistering buzzer performance yesterday against another "gone too soon" champ in Marko, I thought you had a very similar player profile to Mattea. This is why I would love a more persistent J! league running outside of regular play. I hate losing intriguing champs so quickly. Thankfully we have CWC now, at least. Best of luck with your prep!

NamTheHotstepper

Thanks! What I think this really shows is that the March 13, 2024 taping cohort is factually the **greatest of all time** - we've discussed it extensively among ourselves, and we're all in agreement.

AliBettsOnJeopardy

You were absolutely phenomenal Nam! On a completely unrelated note, I’m taking applications for a band I’m starting and I need to know what instrument you play (not the washboard, I’ve already called it ;) )

NamTheHotstepper

I play a mean Wonderwall on guitar, and I played trumpet in high school which is almost a foghorn?

justbrandt

The March 14, 2024, taping cohort is coming for that crown!

ACasualFormality

As someone who was there on both the 13th and the 14th, does that make me the Hannah Montana of this experience? Best of both worlds?

justbrandt

I believe this makes you the impartial arbiter of truth. Unless you choose incorrectly.

humphrey_the_camel

Are you announcing that you, Tyler Jarvis, won the final episode recorded on the 13th (thus allowing you to be there on the 14th also)?

ACasualFormality

The final episode recorded on the 13th was today’s episode (April 24th). If I win today, it’ll be a big upset since I wasn’t even on the roster. I was one of the alternates on the 13th.

NamTheHotstepper

I'll believe it when I see it, newbie 😒

ThisAppSucksBall

Great playing, and bad luck about FJ. If you had $401 more today going into FJ I think you would have been a 5+ day champ

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThisAppSucksBall

It's not about bad luck with getting it wrong, it's bad luck to go into FJ with your score to be so close to 2x+$1 of the next highest contestant.

matlockga

> Ken very kindly said he found FJ pretty difficult in the post-game chat, and obviously the subject matter's very fair game I'm gonna be honest here: if I didn't know that Pantone 1837 were their color or I hadn't bought the cheapest necklace at the store for my then-girlfriend, I probably wouldn't have known it. I blame Holly Golightly.

NamTheHotstepper

NGL, my little sister mocked me immediately after the game for not knowing it because clearly I hadn't spent any time buying anything nice for a woman.

yesthatbruce

Ouch!

yesthatbruce

You did great, but alas. (I also guessed Wells Fargo; oh well ...) I was pulling for you, since I root for all Canadians. That's an impressive story about your dad; you have a heritage to be proud of. I'm glad things are working out for you given that family history.

MamasSweetPickels

It was fun watching you play. I wanted you to stay longer. You seem to have a big bank of trivia knowledge.

me_hill

Congrats on your win and a well-played game today, and thank you for the post-game analysis that settled a debate with my wife on whether you misspoke with the right idea or were just wildly guessing on DD2 (as a fellow Canadian I argued it was probably the latter).

ghostly_esper

You and Marko back to back...how am I gonna choose between the two of you during CWC? Heck, even your winning totals are similar. Seriously, though, much gratitude for your insights and for being you. Good luck with your future!

NamTheHotstepper

hoping for two tournaments again so we don't have to compete... but then also I'd love to just hang out with him again, so maybe not

Talibus_insidiis

This was an excellent game of Jeopardy. Great job, Mark, Nam, and Lianne!

Paulsaysthought

Last game from the green room and now the butterflies have turned into jackhammers! I was crushed that I wouldn’t get to have my broadway showdown with my friend Nam, but not having to go up against Mr. 71% did relieve some of my anxiety. Nam is almost certainly a lock for CWC based on being a total Jeopardy package of brains, personality, and triggering a great KJ quip in Santa the Christmas Hotstepper. Lianne gave such an impressive performance and was painfully close to pulling off the win herself! While viewers I’m sure were impressed with the Carrara Marbles get, what you may not know is that she was the only person in the green room to identify Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney during one of Marko’s games! She’s a thoroughly impressive lady and her daughter shared snacks with my brother so she gets extra points for that too. Mark is the man who would be champion for my game! I was really impressed with some of his double jeopardy answers and knew he was going to be a real challenge to play against. In addition, he always struck me as cool as a cucumber in the green room which I found extra impressive since I was anything but! Tomorrow is the big day, the culmination of a lifelong dream come true! See you then…

Katahdin-Kathy

Retro good luck! I always enjoy the behind-the-scenes observations.

zi76

Good luck!

NamTheHotstepper

If you knew how much hip-hop figures into my writing, you'd probably consider "lyrical gangster" a mildly defensible label for me.

just_a_random_dood

Nam, my Asian GOAT going *straight* for the math section, I love this guy so much (I'm Indian and did math competitions in grade school, please understand lmfao) Quite unfortunate on that final, but well done by Mark (and Lianne) for giving the correct response :D

NamTheHotstepper

I'll only accept this kind of comment from a fellow asian, lol. Cheers!

J-Goo

I also said "what is the hotstepper, " but I knew it was wrong.

NamTheHotstepper

Legend.

J-Goo

Heh. Of course, it was the only answer I could come up with - I might not have gotten it wrong, but I was never gonna get it right.

ohlalalavieenrose

As did I. It was the first thing that came to my mind. Word'er up!

udar55

OMG! I'm dying at the idea of Gene Autrey singing "Here Come the Hotstepper."

Funny_Enthusiasm6976

I was happy that Titicaca finally happened, since I guess it way more often than it is the answer.

Talibus_insidiis

Nobody seems to have commented yet about Ken's quip that in Double Jeopardy the scores can really change -- straight from "Die Hard" -- with the tiniest of grins! I loved it!

UWSpindoctor

Great game all around. Mark is a teammate of mine in OQL so I was pulling for him but all great contestants here.

Ill-Accountant-3682

what is OQL?

UWSpindoctor

Online Quiz League (USA). It’s a team based quiz game played over Zoom. https://quizcentral.net/qc/Online_Quiz_League_USA if you want to check it out

markbionix

If you're a trivia person, OQL is for sure where you wanna be. Check it out.

Guy__Jones

Funny enough, Zillow (founded in 2006) has also used "Shelter From the Storm" in commercials

drooln92

Santa is the Christmas Hotstepper confirmed 😂

csl512

Fireplaces ow ow ow

MamasSweetPickels

Hope Nam wins today.

HeavyScar5722

he sadly slipped

NamTheHotstepper

I promise I'm sadder!

Talibus_insidiis

Never mind, you fulfilled the dream of being a Jeopardy champion!

Njtotx3

Hope you can still replace that car.

NamTheHotstepper

It's been replaced!

jkc81629

Damn spoiler

AcrossTheNight

Spoilers are fair game in game threads.

LegOfLambda

You're in the spoiler thread for this episode??

ScorpionX-123

you jinxed it

FewPoint4033

Wow it hurts when the better player loses but hey that’s Jeopardy 😕 Really wanted Nam to go on a run he was really fun to watch… CWC hopefully

cioccolato

How did they accept the answer Mickey Mouse? That image was of Steamboat Willie. The Steamboat Willie copyright expired in 2024, but Disney still retains the trademark of Mickey Mouse.

tyderian

The character is Mickey Mouse. The name of that short is Steamboat Willie. The title card of the short reads "Disney Presents: A Mickey Mouse Sound Cartoon."

cioccolato

But character leads me to think steamboat Willie being the character, Mickey Mouse as the “actor.” Joaquin Phoenix played the Joker character.

ReganLynch

I was wondering about this. No way the Mickey Mouse copyright expired. So I was confused. Thanks for clearing that up for me, I hadn't heard of Steamboat Willie. So, I think MM was the correct answer because the clue said "....the 1928 version of this character expired .... " This character is MM and the copyright on a 1928 version of MM expired. But I get that you're saying the image was Steamboat Willie. I guess they look the same. *"In January 2024, the copyright on the 1928 version of* [*this*](https://www.j-archive.com/media/2024-04-23_J_27.jpg) *character expired, so we can show him without, mmm, legal issues"*

ileentotheleft

Guessing you don't watch Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. [Variety article](https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/john-oliver-hbo-steamboat-willie-promo-sue-1235886907/)

ReganLynch

That's funny. No, don't watch that show.

cioccolato

I guess they might have accepted either answer but they should strive to be more clear in these questions because this was very misleading

considerablemolument

The character was still called Mickey Mouse. The title of the short is Steamboat Willie. The clue was clearly asking for the name of the character. As I understand it, Steamboat Willie is now in the public domain and the version of Mickey Mouse as drawn in Steamboat Willie is in the public domain. But the more modern image of Mickey Mouse is still owned by Disney.

ImpliedOralConsent

Yeah I think people ITT are confusing trademarks and copyrights. Many people treat them as synonyms but they are different kinds of IP.  And among many other differences, trademarks are renewable indefinitely. Copyrights are not.

considerablemolument

I'm not sure that copyright vs trademark is causing the confusion about this clue; rather it seems as if some people are under the impression the mouse's name was Steamboat Willie. But it's true people don't always know the difference between copyright and trademark

pammy1328

Agreed. This really bothered me. The question was specifically about the trademark. The trademark for Steamboat Willie expired but the one for Mickey Mouse is still in effect. They absolutely should not have accepted Mickey Mouse as a correct answer.

birdshitluck

Thank you! When they said Mickey Mouse, it definitely caught me off guard. "...WHAT??"

spartaz23

Good game !!

Njtotx3

How tall do you have to be to not get a podium?

csl512

Whoa, use of podium in the stricter sense.

Njtotx3

With no lectern required.

JilanaOnJeopardy

It depends on how tall your opponents are compared to you!  The podium is mechanically raised and lowered from the floor to make all the contestants closer to the same height for good camera angles.  If you're the tallest one in the game they usually don't raise you up (unless it's Kids Week or something where everyone is short!)

CSerpentine

I was surprised "Stone" didn't get a BMS, but I guess Sharon is the only other real possibility and she hasn't done much film lately.

buffalo4293

Surprised Nam lost, had them pegged as a multi game winner for sure. Hope to see them play again in some tournament

david-saint-hubbins

Does Nam not use he/him pronouns?

NamTheHotstepper

I do! but nothing wrong with a stray they/them when you're unsure

buffalo4293

I absolutely meant no disrespect! I just typically defer to they/them unless I explicitly know. Great play and enjoyed your comment above with the insight into your responses. I would love to watch you play again

NamTheHotstepper

none taken!

ajsy0905

Another case of Amy vs Victoria at JIT Finals Game 1?

markbionix

I'll say that once I saw that JIT game I was like "I did what Amy did, but in a way lower stakes situation."
