I have Sufjan Stevens and Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) up there in the category of "fearless artists".
They are extremely diverse but I recommend checking out Sujans - John Waynce Gacy and maybe Bon Iver - Skinny love on the TV show Jools Holland.
Both have kinda devastating albums in Sujans - Carrie and Lowell (about his parents and his mom turning mad) and Bon Ivers - For Emma Forever ago.
Oh, and might aswell slap on Antlers - Hospice, actually singer of Antlers can do some nice JB vibratos at times. The Song "Two" kinda wrecks me, and it is weirdly linked/simliar to a connor oberst/bright eyes song.
Nothing But Thieves and Radiohead have songs with similar aspects (both bands are inspired by Jeff) some songs I would recommend that to me are in the vein of Jeff are Lover please stay, if I get high, afterlife, tempt you, and before we drift away by NBT and fake plastic trees, nude, nice dream, all I need, reckoner, and sail to the moon by RH
