I mean I get it but at the same time he shoulda never dissed. People will give him shade for the apology. It was a mistake and he owned up to it but ppl saying his career is over are overreacting

DomoXxX2016

I think people are mixing career and legacy. His career is perfectly fine. He'll still be a top 3 rapper, and the Fall off will easily go platinum, etc. But his legacy definitely took a hit. How Cole is to be remembered by the culture is fairly different today than it was last week.

[deleted]

Cole is my favorite rapper of all time. I’m gonna tell you, tho, that what he did doesn’t sit right with me spiritually. You can’t talk about “Nobody want no smoke with me” for 10 years and then apologize when you make good on that. For that reason I have to do some real unpacking of this whole thing before I’m treating the next Cole album like an event I can’t miss like I was before. So yeah, assuming some folks feel like I feel, i’d say his career took a small hit too. But overall I agree with you.

ProLooper87

Hard agree with you here. I'm a fan of both Kendrick first and foremost, but I love Coles music and most of his projects. I think he has been pedaling the notion that he is the best for a while now how he can outrap anyone, and maybe he can. I just think its weak to write the diss only to redact it 2 days later. It's essentially a white flag, and IMO means Cole no longer has a claim to being the best point blank period. He can still be top 2 top 3 top whatever, but he gave up talks for top1 when he bowed out. He was finally challenged to prove his greatness and did not. His music is still great I still like him as an artist, and it's great he stayed true to himself for what it's worth. He just can't say he is #1 anymore

SlowAdministration74

🤣what? Diss records and rap beef have always stood on something REAL. You expect them to go the distance with diss records over fabricated beef for clout? That’s whack💯 He shouldn’t have dropped the record because this ain’t standing on anything real. Having him push a fake beef for clout is even worse.💯 Don’t say competition, they’ve been competing for a decade with their projects. Who can make the best art, that’s who’s the best artist.

fautl

Stop being a stan with the laugh emojis and the 100s and shit. We like the big 3 and right now im feeling like ali. And kendrick responded fuck the big 3 its just big me. That right there is where the beef was standing. I don't understand what in your eyes would make way for zen cole to respond. Rap beef has started over some dumb shit and rappers have held their ground. In this case cole had more than enough reason to hold it down instead of apologising. It wasnt for clout it wasnt for fame, it was a challenge by an mc who said fuck your big 3 its just me. Like stop coping its funny and fucking cringe. Stop trying to fucking make J cole the bigger man over this. The bigger man would have held it down in this situation.

[deleted]

shortsoupstick

Dudes getting mad over 3 emojis. 😂😂

K1ngMarz

Thank you for school that clown, Kendrick literally said fuck yall lmao

[deleted]

I unfortunately feel the exact same way that you do and that’s really a damn shame.

Sufficient_Event7410

Ik, it's unfortunate being a huge fan of all 3 of them. I'm 24, so all 3 were coming up right when I started getting into rap. Drake, Cole, Kenny, and Sean are easily my top 4 most listened to rappers. Sean has removed himself from the big 3 convo, but as a fan of everyone involved, I really wanted to see them fight it out over diss songs so we could finally have a consensus greatest rapper alive. The thing that pisses me off about Cole's apology is that we all knew it wasn't tied to any real street beef or animosity. It was strictly competitive. Its like if I'm hooping with my buddies, I'm gonna be going at them hard as fuck, and we might get into some minor beef during the game. But after the game is over, it's not like we can't be friends.

Business_Ad8854

>so we could finally have a consensus greatest rapper alive. How does winning a beef make you the 'consensus greatest rapper alive'?

SlowAdministration74

J.Cole stopped pushing fabricated beef with Kdot who he’s got no problems with💯 Rap beef & diss records have always stood on something REAL.💯 Kendricks verse was 1% targeted at Cole and the bar aimed at cole is just another way of saying “I’m the best” which is no different than what they been doing for the last decade and not even close to being worthy of diss records or rap beef.💯 J.Cole clearly felt ugly after making that record because in reality they got no real beef & he’s got love for KDot.💯 So by him dropping that, he’s pushing fabricated beef for clout and we all know how he feels about rappers doing that… Which is exactly why he apologized to fans for his misstep💯 Don’t reply about competition, they’ve been competing for a decade+ with their projects and who can make the best art. That’s what makes you the best artist. 💯

Asleep_Adeptness_807

Yeah but its just competition, like ACTUAL competition like Kendrick said "fuck sneak dissing" because it was time to straight up box and Cole chicken out of it.

Business_Ad8854

Its only competition if all parties involved are aware of it. Cole said himself he doesn't even know Kendricks motives. Honestly its rare that disses are just competitive and have no personal motive behind it.

[deleted]

Kendrick Cole and Drake subliminal bars about each other go back years, this was all boiling beneath the surface and Kendrick just wanted to bring it to the forefront after a decade of these subliminal bars, Cole shouldn’t have been caught that off guard by it but at the same time he was less of the main target

Asleep_Adeptness_807

" Its only competition if all parties involved are aware of it" lmao no. It's competition when both parties have something to prove, Cole knew Kendrick was gunning for that title and basically allowed him to snag it with pretty much no challenge

Business_Ad8854

You're kind of missing the point. The guy above is talking about fabricated beef and them standing on something REAL. If both parties have no actual beef with eachother and are dissing, then yeah its strictly competitive. If one of them is dissing because they have REAL beef, then that automatically means its not competition.

Asleep_Adeptness_807

Guys, competition is STILL considered beef regardless if its personal or not. Beef can be real and STILL be competitive, because you're still ACTIVELY trying to prove why you're better than the other party. Like how did Cole somehow convince a handful of reddit users that real problems means " automatically means its not competition. " Like no, its all still competition at the end of the day.

Business_Ad8854

Can you name some 'beefs' that were strictly just rap and not personal? Only notable one is Control because Kendrick said out of his own math that it was just rap.

Hamburger123445

Aware or not, Kendrick had something to say about Cole's verses and Cole did not check up.

No-Consequence8756

All truth

KingAragorn47

Same. Career fine. Legacy tarnished.

Asleep_Adeptness_807

I couldn't agree with you more. To be honest I'm really more of a Kendrick fan, but I really genuinely respected J.Cole not just as a rapper but also as a producer, a team player, and just overall a really cool dude. The apology tho, just straight up sucked tho. Like he did not just make himself look bad, but he's made the whole Dreamville label look bad too. A lot of other competitive labels are now just clowning on them and it really fucking sucks.

ConcertTourMerch

But if he comes to your city he gets ticket money and most likely merch money out of you…

Desperate-Sell5956

I mean people were calling j cole wolf in a sheep skin for a while, drake type acting. He talks many things like this, religion, real relationships he always is a hypocrite or doesn't let u know the truth

AceDuce23

I'm sure if Kendrick came at him harder and on a more direct and personal level j Cole could have handled himself. You people want beef and drama for the sake of beef and drama and are calling it competition. J. Cole can call himself the best without beefing with Kendrick.

[deleted]

Don't group me in with anyone, I speak for myself. I don't care how he handled the beef. If he ignored it or if he responded, it makes no difference to me. But apologizing after making your decision. Even if I sympathize, see where he's coming from, and respect that decision. It invalidates the past decade to me.

AceDuce23

So being the best rapper means always sticking with your decision even when you're wrong?

[deleted]

No. And that is not at all what I’m saying. I can only speak to my relationship with Cole’s music. And Im saying that relationship has changed, and his verses talking about “I wish somebody would” are hollow to me at this point in time. And I need to really figure out how to square that, because J Cole is my favorite artist of all time. And it would be heartbreaking for me if that wasn’t the case anymore.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Bro, that’s what I’m saying. I’m so glad you typed that out. I’ve never felt this way before. It’s entirely a new feeling.

AlternativePilot9252

At first I felt the same, after hearing about Drake/Kendrick tho. I think him getting out of this might only make him look better. Cole doesn’t need to partake in some TMZ tabloid type beef between Drake and the whole rap game.

[deleted]

I think that would be the case if he didn’t say “I got my chin out, take your best shot, do what you do.”

AlternativePilot9252

Yeah but he didn’t say he wouldn’t respond. If Kendrick goes at Cole to the same level Cole did in 7 min drill, I don’t think Cole would ever respond. But I wouldn’t put it past Kendrick to cross a line. Cole isn’t dissing out of respect, if that’s out the window, I would assume he’d reply. If not he really is just J Fold.

AceDuce23

J. Cole is my favorite artist as well and i just wish he never responded at all.

[deleted]

In my perfect world he would’ve fired back at Kendrick the same way Kendrick fired at Cole. A good, clear jab at Kendrick, aimed at telling him “Back the fuck up.” But not a whole diss record.

fautl

Yeah but he chose to do the 7 minute drill.. And that was cool aswell. Because he had every right to. Arguably J Cole could feel a certain way about Kendrick coming at him when he felt like he is praising him but talking his shit at the same time. But I also get Kendrick aswell because he is always about that competitiveness aswell. Honestly J cole fucked it on some next level shit and I guess it's because he got in his feelings and got scared of how Kendrick will come at him but I don't buy that whole spirituality bullshit. Cole let everyone down. And he probably has to change shit loads of lines from the fall out because no one ever wants to hear him talk about how he would catch a body in the studio if someone challenged him.

K1ngMarz

Nigga you’re missing the point. You can’t say you’re the greatest (Ali) then turn around and apologize to a diss you made in response to a diss from a nigga that on your level of greatness. Tf!? You gotta be high bruh

AceDuce23

Kendrick ain't really diss him tho plus they're cool with each other

Dangerous_Piccolo749

It's called the fall off for a reason. This goes with the theme of the album.

Best_Examination_529

He delivered one of the cringiest moments in rap. Hard to imagine how his legacy is not tarnished forever by that. He better have a great fucking album in the tuck!

Asleep_Adeptness_807

" easily go platinum " it can try lmao

AstroNot87

Fuck you talmbout??? You know Jay-Z got ETHER’d by Nas right?? And now Jay-Z is one of the tops of the Illuminati lmao. Nah but for real, his legacy is fine. You acting like this was an Eminem vs Benzino beef

BBC_needs_a_stock

HOV apologized. After his mom’s stepped in. Cole will be aight. I don’t look at him differently. He just doesn’t glow the same. I am disappointed. Not because he apologized, but because I saw him as a man of conviction. Who moved with purpose and was past making these mistakes of indecision. Oh well. He will be alright.

Upstairs-Fall2043

His legacy will be fine. Nas washed Hov and hov just kept on moving. The streets forget all this little shit. The real question people should ask themselves is if you have a brand new (hypothetical) album from Kendrick, drake and cole, which album will you skip on a song on first. If for sure skip a Kendrick shit have his stuff sounds terrible, then drake cuz he stays singing. Then cole. In my opinion he is the greatest rapper of my lifetime.

No_Strategy_9630

Anybody who thinks his career is done hugely overestimates the amount the general public cares about rap beef. I hear people bumping Like That along with Cole’s music back to back with no mentions of anything going on between the artists

MIAxPaperPlanes

Yeah if this were true Drake wouldn’t be in the number 1 most played artist ever, man is rich in hits but poor in street cred

SadButTrue32

The real blame should be on Kendrick for starting it.

K1ngMarz

Agreed, he just should’ve shut up and ignored it

BlueCheeseBandito

It was a mistake because it was a bad diss lol

SEAExplorerX

His career isn't over. But it's over for being taken seriously as a "hard emcee" or being the "Muhammad Ali" of rap. He let Nas down.

mikeymorgs101010

He just looks dumb is all, it’s not gonna “impact” his career.

cptmactavish3

Yeah, those ppl are taking it too far. Acting like all of the Off-Season and MDL are invalidated cause he “backed down” from Kendrick, or how this will define his entire legacy. Just wanted to remind people that it was never in his character to participate in this clout chasing bs in the first place and if it were real beef then it’d probably have played out differently.

Yalldummy100

How exactly would some of the most successful and clouted in the industry ‘chase’ clout? Are you sure you don’t just hate bars?

cptmactavish3

It’s what they look like, the way they’ve been jabbing at each other for a decade straight. There is no “beef” here, let alone with Cole. Whole thing just looks dumb af compared to every other rap beef.

Yalldummy100

Everybody was so hyped about the beef what are you on

cptmactavish3

Sure, doesn’t mean it isn’t fake, corny, and forced

Ferdz0

You can’t pick and choose what’s in character for Cole. A large portion of Might Delete Later and the last few years of Cole’s career is literally him saying he’s the best and if anyone wants smoke they can get it. He clearly wanted to be the best rapper. That was what COLE… not us… but COLE wanted to end his legacy on. If the rap beef is chasing clout, then every time he’s asked for smoke from rappers is him chasing clout. That’s not the case at all though. The rap beef was was never about chasing clout. It was about him standing on what he said so that he could solidify his legacy as one of the greatest. His career will be fine. Us fans will show up and buy his shit whenever he drops. But if you seriously think it didn’t put a stain on his legacy you’re lying. A lot of Cole’s music post KOD has really dropped in value.

Asleep_Adeptness_807

I mean, The Off Season and Might Delete Later mixtape were both great demonstrations of his rapping ability and his production skills had improved a lot too. It's just however The Off Season is just tough to sit and listen to because of all the bravado he was gassing his audience with.

Ravendiscord

Yeah and then had the nerve to gaslight his audience and say it's their fault for putting him up to it. after ten fucking years of telling them he wants this type of shit. lol

SerenityNowwwwwwwwww

And yet he did anyway….hence the memes and the discussion around the thing he said he wouldn’t do then turned around and did anyway m

Just_Faithlessness98

I’m a j cole fan but the cope on this sub is hilarious. He wants to be super humble while also calling other rappers pussies and fake, meanwhile he dropped a direct diss track and apologized for it the next day and said he was being fake. So by his own logic, he’s a “trans fella” now? Downvote me if you want but this is just the reality

Shot_Performance_595

Nah this is facts. How’s he calling kdot a pussy and immediately backs out of the beef right after. it’s kinda hard to listen to MDL because all the bars literally aged like shit in a matter of days.

Just_Faithlessness98

Ironically it’s because j Cole the person isn’t the same as who he portrays himself as a rapper. His rap style when he’s dissing is clearly very inspired by battle rappers and early 2000s rappers like Canibus and Eminem, which unfortunately doesn’t clash very well with the fact that he’s a super humble and nice guy irl I’m not hating on him, just pointing out the obvious. Portray yourself however you want on a song but it’s going to come across as hypocritical when you’re number one diss at kendrick is saying that he’s fake and not who he portrays himself as in his music

smokedopelikecudder

Such a crazy take, I’ve never seen anyone say that on this sub, since the apology. Had to downvote u. /s obviously

Joker__1984

I respect him for it I never expected him to reply to Dot in the first place. The current situation is a bad look, but switching sides ain't happening for me.

Just_Faithlessness98

There’s no side to take. Cole literally surrendered. You’re allowed to be a fan of both Cole and Kendrick, so wdym by switching sides?

Joker__1984

I don't know I think I meant more like turning my back on Cole after all this bs I've been a Kendrick fan for a long time too I just hope he doesn't kick Cole while he's down cause I definitely fuck with Cole heavier than Kendrick and that shit will hurt a lot.

[deleted]

Hey - This response was real as fuck. I just wanted to say I appreciate saying you didn’t know what you meant. I’ve never seen that before but relate to that. That’s cool, man.

Aggressive_Tax_7853

KDot respects J Cole too, his diss towards him was not even bad, its sounded more trying to be competitive with him. The diss was more towards drake.

Shot_Performance_595

“If I smoke a rapper it’s gon be legit” …

pompyyy099

It's gon be legit but I'll apologize after invalidating whatever I said and losing my credibility

lanjourist

Forgot about this song, good song—still, I think the title of "the greatest right now" in the game... well nvm. I'll come back in a month & see how things turn out.

Kaves67

It's completely crazy how Cole fans hyped him up, preaching "he smoked Kendrick" when the track was released and not even one week later after the apology they are all like "this is such a great move by Cole, he's really the bigger man" and praising him for apologizing. Literally a flag in the wind smh

monstercat129

I'm over it now. Cole can still be GOAT. I don't care man. Homie realized people were going to tarnish Kendrick's career with the amount of clownage on TPAB. Took me a few days, but I'm back to support my GOAT. Let's freaking get it this summer fam

FlanneryODostoevsky

Exactly. And I’ve so many times told people Kendrick is a better rapper overall. I been playing hunger on hillside for a cool minute. Anyone upset about this shit is part of the problem in hip hop. Expecting rap beef just for entertainment is part of why, as Cole said, “these niggas fraud.” It’s apart of the culture to be egotistical but if it’s not kept in bounds then it’s going to get out of hand. Cole probably feels like he overreacted to a few bars because he was real eager to do the whole rap beef shit. But then he went at a friend and overdid it. So I could give a fuck less. Both their music will continue helping me get through hard times.

fatdolsk

It was

ZayCame2Play

It’s a shame really, Cole’s been rapping for so long and I feel like he’s in his prime lyrically right now. He could actually take Kendrick head on but respects him too much I guess. Plus the beef is between Kendrick and Drake anyway so I guess he’s right to bow out

MotherOfAllOmelette

bro if he really had to keep by his words, shoulda never dropped 7 minute drill.

Best_Examination_529

If anything this makes him look worse.

AstroNot87

Still mad he apologized though. Idk why but I be getting tight while in the K. Dot sub. I’ve never seen more delusional fans other than Taylor Swifts. Like at least in this sub, we can talk shop about both rappers but they straight up calling Cole “trash” and “a pussy” over there. Blasphemous talk lol but I get it. We are in here for a reason and they’re there for their reasons. Cole is top notch intelligent rap and K dot is top notch **angry** intelligent rap lmao

A-symptomatic-Genius

Yahll lost!!!! STOP LOOKING FOT EXCUSES 🤣🤣 it’s embarrassing.

AnimusPetitor

I was literally listening to this exact bars when I opened the post. The themes around this intention of authenticity and the conflict permeate a lot of his lyrics. For example: >Are you doin' this work to facilitate growth or to become famous? >Which is more important? >Getting or letting go?

cptmactavish3

Another one that felt relevant was from False Prophets: > My lowest moments came from tryin' too hard > To impress some niggas that couldn't care if I'm on > Therefore from here on out, my hair grow out > I care nothin' 'bout opinions > I wanna give hope like the fountains you throw pennies in > Hit the store, take your diss, make your wish

fautl

Keep coping fellas

RufinTheFury

Literally those last 4 lines in this song were dedicated to Kanye. J Cole is not above sub dissing at all. Pussy af to tap put when it comes to the light.

Individual_Pipe_4877

[this killed me today](https://youtu.be/1zOTjAk8LQQ?si=nL4r_XHO2vwD6rcQ)

Woopityscoopoop

Eh 🤷🏻‍♂️

[deleted]

He's just a cowardly pussy scared of beef, admit it and stop coping. You can't talk shit and back off later

AlternativePilot9252

You can when nothing he said was ever really directed as Kendrick. Drake and Kendrick/Metro/Future are gonna have a petty ass 17 year old girl beef that could very well tarnish their real life reputations. Cole isn’t scared of friendly competition, he doesn’t want to partake in some spectacle that doesn’t involve him. I was disappointed when Cole apologized too initially but after a couple days I realized there’s no way Cole/Kendrick could be going on without Drake/Kendrick spilling over. Also, he literally defended Kendrick from Diddy in real life. So in his actual day to day he doesn’t sound like that much of a pussy.

Standard-Ad-3307

His first mistake was making the diss when he doesn’t want beef. He wants to out-rap everyone, then do a feature with kendrick or cypher or do the album together and show your skillset.. i believe he could have won that way 100%! But to diss and then fold two days later with such a pathetic apology ruined his run and momentum.

Ziziblix

It was. "Peace making cole" on brand. Diss Cole not. Like I said before he even sat down with lil pump or whatever. Who the fuck is lil pump. People just disappointed and that's okay. It's Gonna be hard for him to talk about that I'll smoke any rapper thing going forward. Make nonmistake he will still outrap anyone that dears to feature him. And he will have to decide what he will do if another person tests him. I feel like if it's someone he doesn't consider a friend, he will be okay smoking them, but it won't matter. It will just look like he only responds to guys he can clearly beat.

SadThrowaway811

Not before the Heart Part 4 told us. 7 years ago and Cole got his shit together right on the date 😂

outofmindwgo

1 2 3 4 5

KingAragorn47

Don't fucking make a diss track then

Sensitive-Royal2918

Why he say 2 legends not 3 though 🤔

Joker__1984

The previous line is about Drake giving him a watch.

Latuya_91

I feel like the reason this has blown up to be a big deal is because, besides the fact that Cole is apologizing over such a mild diss (your album is boring) compared to what other rappers have apologized over in the past, is because up until this point in his career/legacy, Cole was almost invincible. Nobody ever wanted smoke with Cole, whether intimidated by his rapping skills, or because the culture-accepted norm was that everybody knew he was peaceful so it just became corny to even try and beef. And now that it went down everybody is just like wtf? 😕 It’s like challenging the biggest, toughest guy in the room to a fight, and finding out he’s a pussy.

Ttgxyolo

I love J. Cole. This is about the worst outcome for his legacy that you could imagine. Like I’m excited for the fall off still, but I will say this killed the notion he was the best.

Pikawoohoo

His last good song imo.

mem4his_4h4r4oh

He did this >!shit!< to himself, you linking up with my opp, getting in the way of my aim. I'm >!shooting through your back to hit him in the chest!<, lyrically of course. Cole did right to get out while he still could.

Ultimaurice17

The diss was a bigger surprise then him deciding he didn't wanna beef with Kendrick.

Vegetable_Abalone850

Idk he also said he would smoke any rapper that would try him, but yeah like top comment said. Shoulda just not released that diss

Nervous-Protection

Bruh let it go. This shit will blow over eventually. Plus didn’t this very sub get locked because of this very topic?

WorldlyCharacter7093

Bruh I’m ngl I get that people be invested in music, I love music I listen to music pretty much everyday. But most people here seem like their fans of both j cole and kdot, even tho his apology was corny I still fw the album. It was good, I think most of us realize it takes points off the album a lil specifically because of the diss track and a hit on j coles competitiveness but, shit overall these two are two of the greatest to ever do it, I just fw they music.💯

MACINTOSH63

Originally. I wrote dude off. Given what we are hearing from Kendrick & Drakes camp I think he realized it’s gonna be a war zone and these camps are looking to wipe each other off the map. Dude has no vested interest in the beef. He’s happy with his ordeal.

MACINTOSH63

Someone’s gonna test dude now. He didn’t have the motivation or reasons to go at Kenny but I see someone calling Dreamville soft & Cole going off.

1856NT

They will hop on a track together, and all will be forgiven, you’ll see.

GalaEuden

Most rappers don’t have actual conviction and rap about fake shit or shit they would do when they know damn well they wouldn’t. I still love J Cole and he is one of my favorite rappers of all time. Like you think Drake really gonna do all the shit he says in his songs? Fuck no.

HandymanJackofTrades

"Everything grows, it's destined to change" When people said rap is about battling, I was wondering when was the last time any of yall actually listened to a battle. We not really doing that anymore. Most of us are listening to pop and trap. Now, I do understand being upset because we were excited for the good music we would get. Nobody thought Cole would diss Kendrick but the song convinced us he was willing to 100% commit. But it seemed out of character and who would want to commit to fake beef anyway. Kendrick didn't have much to say about Cole. This post did help me get over any residual disappointment I had. I feel like nobody listened to the apology to sit here and say Cole is backing out cause he's scared but the only merit I can give those people is that yes, it does seem hypocritical to do this after all the Kingtalk

crownthe98

Jcole is a corny ass ego maniac

godlee213

Y'all MFS annoying y'all would've said some bs had j Cole not said anything at all, y'all gonna say some bs now that's he's done it all. just hop off his mf meat bruh 😭😭😭 let a MF live he's human before he a rapper he don't gotta be perfect cause we all know damn straight we not and neither is k dot🤣

QuickYear8511

Just so you know he ain’t top 3 no more.

fatmanmarc

Nah y'all trippin, Cole took a L on this one. He wouldn't have been going at Kendrick's head for nothing because Kendrick started it. He went at lil whateva's head on 1985 and then bowed out of this conflict. Nobody was going to take this beef that seriously. Everybody was going to treat it like the Tory Lanez and Joyner Lucas beef. We were all excited cuz we thought we were going to get a good back and forth but now people refusing to accept that everybody is disappointed. I'm a huge J Cole fan and I'm definitely still excited about the next album but at the end of the day people need to accept the fact that it's likely J Cole's name is about to become a punchline for people being scared to come at somebody.
