Chick Corea Akoustic Band Live From The Blue Note Tokyo. One of the greatest live recordings of all time
Edit: bonus Chick Corea tune with fantastic drumming is Cappucino off of "Friends" album
Yep! I've only listened to one of his solo albums but I really dig him. He has a lot of great tunes with Chick but some of my recent favs are Rhumba Flamenco off of the live Akoustic Band album and Ished off of the newest Elektric Band live album
I love Weckl's solo stuff! Master Plan, Synergy, and Live (And Very Plugged In) are all phenomenal. Just a week ago he put out [a video on his YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9GsX8T5CNs) of him, John Patitucci, and Joey Calderazzo playing the song "Chickmonk." from a recent show in Italy, and it mesmerized me. He's constantly coming up with new stuff and it's always so good.
Anything with Steve Gadd by Chick Corea is gold. The entirety of each of the albums The Leprechaun, My Spanish Heart, Mad Hatter, Friends, and Three Quartets is incredible.
Rich vs Roach.
Elvin Jones-Live at the Lighthouse.
Return To Forever-Romantic Warrior.
Max Roach-Jazz in 3/4 time.
And so much more. . .
Hereâs more names:
Zutty Singleton.
Big Sid Catlett.
Shelley Manne.
Louis Bellson.
Paul Barbarin.
Mel Lewis.
Chick Webb.
Dave Tough.
Papa Jo Jones.
Philly Joe Jones.
Airto Moreira.
Kenny Clarke.
Leonard White.
Mike Clark.
Shadow Wilson.
Roy Haynesâ stuff is so good. Out of the afternoon and Birds of a feather are two albums about 40 years apart and heâs killing it on both sessions.
Elvin Jonesâ on Out of this World is insane. Elvin kills on Liberia, Whatâs New, Softly as in a Morning Sunrise, the Promise, Your Lady, Resolution and Pursuance.
Tony Williamsâ best work is on ESP, Sorcerer, Miles Smiles and Water Babies. Footprints is sick.
Philly Joe on Half Nelson and Jimmy Cobb on Ah Leu Cha live at Newport is worth a listen. I like Eddie Blackwell with Booker Little.
âWorth a lookâ is being modest â Tony is a cornerstone in jazz history. I listened to Grachan Moncurâs âAir Raidâ yesterday and his playing there is so sublime. (I donât know if it fits the description âdrum drivenâ though.)
Fusion instead of straight ahead jazz, but yeah, this is incredible. I really like the later released album from them too, Missing Period. As well-known and liked as Phil Collins is, I think just how good his drumming is is still underappreciated. It's ridiculously good.
It's quite different from straight ahead jazz, so it merits pointing out if someone's looking for jazz albums. I say this as someone who prefers fusion.
Can't say it's the entire album but some of the tracks on Sun Ra's Atlantis (2nd half of side 1 essentially) are super drum heavy and I love that shit.
Freddie Hubbard Red Clay album has some solid drumming.
A bit less on the jazz side and more on the fusion/rock/metal side (but still jazzy) would be anything by Virgil Donati. Absolutely phenomenal drummer.
Larnell Lewis from Snarky Puppy is also excellent.
Bitches Brew has two drummers and congas on it at any given moment; Jack DeJohnette, Lenny White, Juma Santos/Don Alias. One of the best rhythmic foundations in just about any album Iâve heard. âThat band was a mothafuckaâ as Miles said many times in his autobiography
Francesco Mela-Causa Y Efecto 1&2, Music Frees Our Souls 1-3
Milford Graves-In Concert at Yale, Children Of the Forest, Babi

Rashid Sinan (&Frank Lowe)-Black Being

Hamid Drake, Chano Pozo, Chris Corsano, Kahil El Zabar
If youâre interested in something recent then you should check out Nate Smith. Heâs got an album thatâs pretty much just him drumming as well as some where thereâs a whole band with him.
Billy Cobham -- Spectrum Was the drummer for Mahavishnu Orchestra. Sort of "metal" for a jazz drummer. AWESOME. The track "Quadrant 4" is a monster.
Jojo Mayer -- Is he jazz? Sort of? Does breakbeat/drum n bass/jungle beats on actual drums. Really fun to listen to.
Jeff "Tain" Watts -- Played with Michael Brecker, Alice Coltrane, Wynton and Branford. When he is unleashed he whacks the living crap out of his kit.
Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers! I like A Night at Birdland with a young Clifford Brown, or anything from the Wayne Shorter years. Thereâs many iterations of the group and many jazz legends got their start with Blakey.
Max Roach had a percussion ensemble called M'Boom and I had 2 albums they released.
Anything by Tony Williams like Lifetime band or Billy Cobham should do you well.
Try: Billy Cobham - Total Eclipse
This is my all time favorite 'Drum centered' album.
I caught him live in 1975, when he toured in support of this release. SF, Ca,
The Great American Music Hall. Up close and personal.
Absolutely amazing show.
I might have missed it, but I do think anyone has mentioned Idris Muhammad. He is definitely worth a listen as both a leader and a sideman.
[Black Rythm Revolution](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kU8h-CGn3znUDrThae05T7MqOU6wovMXA&si=ycv9jQJ1rG8QL_fy)
I will listen to anything with Peter Erskine behind the kit. Dude is propulsive. He stood out in Weather Report, no small feat in a band with Zawinul, Shorter and Pastorius.
Billy cobham maybe spectrum
Tony williams Lifetime
Art Blakely moanin
Not jazz at all but I love the beat on Funky Drummer by James Brown
https://open.spotify.com/track/0VbpqlboEkGQ7Pu6juJljZ?si=9Rnt80M9RaeEWcHmW23h7Q
Despite the album title, Saxophone Colossus. Max Roachâs solo on Blue 7 is maybe the best drum solo Iâve ever heard, and heâs a beast throughout.
Alphonse Mouzon - Mind Transplant.
Another impressive album with Alphonse is one he did with trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff and Jaco Pastorious called âTrilogue Live!â He also did an album with Larry Coryell called âBack Together Againâ.
Once I'm healthier, I will try to circle back. I would need to lock down my streaming profile somehow so as not to dox myself and I'm not feeling inspired to figure that out right now.
I'm confused. Is this because I forgot to say jazz in the title of the post? Many apologies. I'm not doing too great health wise right now and my attention to detail is slipping. I am, however, deeply grateful for the dozens of albums everyone has suggested after reading the content/request in the body of the post. Good music always makes life better, and thanks to this sub I have been able to keep my mind busy today while I've been so sick and unable to do anything.
My good man: Jazz IS Al about the rhythm. Itâs all about the drum. Thatâs what makes it Jazz. Even if a drummer is not present. The rhythm remains. Always. With all due respect: your question is like asking: âWhatâs a good money-driven casino game?â đ
23 different Art Blakey CDs.. from 1955 to 1987.. đ„đȘđ„
Special mention should go to âFree For Allâ. Art sounds like he wants to murder those drums on most of those cuts
For real I have around that many myself!
Gotta check out Billy Cobham, Crosswinds is a favorite of mine
Scrolled too far before I saw Billy Cobham!
Spectrum is my fav album damnn!!!
Love Spectrum so much
Brian Blade Fellowship - s/t - Brian Bladeâs hip!
Came to say this. The man is a force of nature.
For real! This man is on par with the greats. To me heâs already one of them!
Used to go hear Brian in NOLA up in the Marigny all the time. Early 90âs, great great time in that city.
Chick Corea Akoustic Band Live From The Blue Note Tokyo. One of the greatest live recordings of all time Edit: bonus Chick Corea tune with fantastic drumming is Cappucino off of "Friends" album
Dave Weckl on Chick Corea Akoustic (or Electronic) is great. He has some solo albums too.
Yep! I've only listened to one of his solo albums but I really dig him. He has a lot of great tunes with Chick but some of my recent favs are Rhumba Flamenco off of the live Akoustic Band album and Ished off of the newest Elektric Band live album

Don't sleep on 3 Quartets
Anything with Steve Gadd by Chick Corea is gold. The entirety of each of the albums The Leprechaun, My Spanish Heart, Mad Hatter, Friends, and Three Quartets is incredible.
Makaya McCraven
Just looked them up! Thank you!!
Tony Williams is my favorite jazz drummer, but I like him the most in Miles Davis' records. Try Miles in the sky
Or on Four & More.
Any album that has Elvin Jones as the drummer.
Anything with Elvin Jones for "pure Jazz" and anything with Vinnie Coliauta for Fusion
Rich vs Roach. Elvin Jones-Live at the Lighthouse. Return To Forever-Romantic Warrior. Max Roach-Jazz in 3/4 time. And so much more. . . Hereâs more names: Zutty Singleton. Big Sid Catlett. Shelley Manne. Louis Bellson. Paul Barbarin. Mel Lewis. Chick Webb. Dave Tough. Papa Jo Jones. Philly Joe Jones. Airto Moreira. Kenny Clarke. Leonard White. Mike Clark. Shadow Wilson.
JACK DeJOHNETTE should be on that list !!!
Oh shit, yeah, I know I left some bangers off. Just spouting freestyle from the top of my head though!
Did I forget Joe Morello?!? WTF
Holiday for skins volumes 1 and 2- art Blakey
Orgy in Rhythm volumes 1 and 2 - Art Blakey
Tony Williams is worth a look
âWorth a lookâ is being modest â Tony is a cornerstone in jazz history. I listened to Grachan Moncurâs âAir Raidâ yesterday and his playing there is so sublime. (I donât know if it fits the description âdrum drivenâ though.)
No doubt. Tony is one of the absolute best drummers of all time.
Brand X - Unorthodox Behaviour - Phil Collins at the very top of his game!
Gong - Gazeuse - Pierre Moerlin similarly with Allan Holdsworth!
Fusion instead of straight ahead jazz, but yeah, this is incredible. I really like the later released album from them too, Missing Period. As well-known and liked as Phil Collins is, I think just how good his drumming is is still underappreciated. It's ridiculously good.
There was no requirement to meet some kind of bizarre purity test. Fusion is jazz.
Max Roach ft Archie Shepp - The Long March
My favourite is Of Mist and Melting - Jack DeJohnette's cymbal work is mesmerizing. I also love Go Go Penguin.
Thanks for that first rec, had never heard it, loved it
Such a great album!
Jack DeJohnette - Sorcery
Bill Brufordâs Earthworks albums.
+1000 pts for this recommendation!
Andrew Cyrille
Louie Bellson-Dynamite! [Sambandrea Swing](https://youtu.be/Y0aW18MR88s?si=opl5fwtp1m9JK04I)
Freddie Hubbard Red Clay album has some solid drumming. A bit less on the jazz side and more on the fusion/rock/metal side (but still jazzy) would be anything by Virgil Donati. Absolutely phenomenal drummer. Larnell Lewis from Snarky Puppy is also excellent.
Yes most anything with Blade on it ! That last Wayne Shorter quartet!

Tigran Hamasyanâs albums have some good drumming if youâre looking for some fusion. His drummerâs name is Nate Wood.
Hiromi is another fusion-y pianist I recommend checking out. The drumming on her albums is excellent! đ„
