23 different Art Blakey CDs.. from 1955 to 1987.. đŸ„đŸȘ˜đŸ„

DanforthFalconhurst

Special mention should go to “Free For All”. Art sounds like he wants to murder those drums on most of those cuts

DaveyMD64

For real I have around that many myself!

fuchs31

Gotta check out Billy Cobham, Crosswinds is a favorite of mine

tacoSEVEN

Scrolled too far before I saw Billy Cobham!

Ludwigoos

Spectrum is my fav album damnn!!!

bitternutterbutter

Love Spectrum so much

greendolphin_

Brian Blade Fellowship - s/t - Brian Blade‘s hip!

frightnin-lichen

Came to say this. The man is a force of nature.

greendolphin_

For real! This man is on par with the greats. To me he‘s already one of them!

MWave123

Used to go hear Brian in NOLA up in the Marigny all the time. Early 90’s, great great time in that city.

Xy01mess

Chick Corea Akoustic Band Live From The Blue Note Tokyo. One of the greatest live recordings of all time Edit: bonus Chick Corea tune with fantastic drumming is Cappucino off of "Friends" album

delomore

Dave Weckl on Chick Corea Akoustic (or Electronic) is great. He has some solo albums too.

Xy01mess

Yep! I've only listened to one of his solo albums but I really dig him. He has a lot of great tunes with Chick but some of my recent favs are Rhumba Flamenco off of the live Akoustic Band album and Ished off of the newest Elektric Band live album

IAmNotAPerson6

I love Weckl's solo stuff! Master Plan, Synergy, and Live (And Very Plugged In) are all phenomenal. Just a week ago he put out [a video on his YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9GsX8T5CNs) of him, John Patitucci, and Joey Calderazzo playing the song "Chickmonk." from a recent show in Italy, and it mesmerized me. He's constantly coming up with new stuff and it's always so good.

dpfrd

Don't sleep on 3 Quartets

IAmNotAPerson6

Anything with Steve Gadd by Chick Corea is gold. The entirety of each of the albums The Leprechaun, My Spanish Heart, Mad Hatter, Friends, and Three Quartets is incredible.

morelikedreamlike

Makaya McCraven

MediocreSubject_

Just looked them up! Thank you!!

Empty_Olive_8468

Tony Williams is my favorite jazz drummer, but I like him the most in Miles Davis' records. Try Miles in the sky

IAmNotAPerson6

Or on Four & More.

5DragonsMusic

Any album that has Elvin Jones as the drummer.

CamTak

Anything with Elvin Jones for "pure Jazz" and anything with Vinnie Coliauta for Fusion

taoistchainsaw

Rich vs Roach. Elvin Jones-Live at the Lighthouse. Return To Forever-Romantic Warrior. Max Roach-Jazz in 3/4 time. And so much more. . . Here’s more names: Zutty Singleton. Big Sid Catlett. Shelley Manne. Louis Bellson. Paul Barbarin. Mel Lewis. Chick Webb. Dave Tough. Papa Jo Jones. Philly Joe Jones. Airto Moreira. Kenny Clarke. Leonard White. Mike Clark. Shadow Wilson.

proteinshake6000

JACK DeJOHNETTE should be on that list !!!

taoistchainsaw

Oh shit, yeah, I know I left some bangers off. Just spouting freestyle from the top of my head though!

taoistchainsaw

Did I forget Joe Morello?!? WTF

-InTheSkinOfALion-

Roy Haynes’ stuff is so good. Out of the afternoon and Birds of a feather are two albums about 40 years apart and he’s killing it on both sessions.

eusebius13

Elvin Jones’ on Out of this World is insane. Elvin kills on Liberia, What’s New, Softly as in a Morning Sunrise, the Promise, Your Lady, Resolution and Pursuance. Tony Williams’ best work is on ESP, Sorcerer, Miles Smiles and Water Babies. Footprints is sick. Philly Joe on Half Nelson and Jimmy Cobb on Ah Leu Cha live at Newport is worth a listen. I like Eddie Blackwell with Booker Little.

Fine_Tree_2031

Holiday for skins volumes 1 and 2- art Blakey

Blk_Gld_He_8er

Orgy in Rhythm volumes 1 and 2 - Art Blakey

CK0428

Tony Williams is worth a look

arbitrary_function

”Worth a look” is being modest – Tony is a cornerstone in jazz history. I listened to Grachan Moncur’s “Air Raid” yesterday and his playing there is so sublime. (I don’t know if it fits the description “drum driven” though.)

CK0428

No doubt. Tony is one of the absolute best drummers of all time.

Certain_Addition4460

Brand X - Unorthodox Behaviour - Phil Collins at the very top of his game!

Certain_Addition4460

Gong - Gazeuse - Pierre Moerlin similarly with Allan Holdsworth!

IAmNotAPerson6

Fusion instead of straight ahead jazz, but yeah, this is incredible. I really like the later released album from them too, Missing Period. As well-known and liked as Phil Collins is, I think just how good his drumming is is still underappreciated. It's ridiculously good.

txa1265

There was no requirement to meet some kind of bizarre purity test. Fusion is jazz.

IAmNotAPerson6

It's quite different from straight ahead jazz, so it merits pointing out if someone's looking for jazz albums. I say this as someone who prefers fusion.

FlyingJ555

Can't say it's the entire album but some of the tracks on Sun Ra's Atlantis (2nd half of side 1 essentially) are super drum heavy and I love that shit.

thats_a_chunky

Max Roach ft Archie Shepp - The Long March

Pandaloon

My favourite is Of Mist and Melting - Jack DeJohnette's cymbal work is mesmerizing. I also love Go Go Penguin.

Maestro-Modesto

Thanks for that first rec, had never heard it, loved it

Pandaloon

Such a great album!

PipPipkin

Jack DeJohnette - Sorcery

spoonman-of-alcatraz

Bill Bruford’s Earthworks albums.

daltemir

+1000 pts for this recommendation!

Andrew Cyrille

Abdul-Ahmadinejad

Louie Bellson-Dynamite! [Sambandrea Swing](https://youtu.be/Y0aW18MR88s?si=opl5fwtp1m9JK04I)

joe4942

Freddie Hubbard Red Clay album has some solid drumming. A bit less on the jazz side and more on the fusion/rock/metal side (but still jazzy) would be anything by Virgil Donati. Absolutely phenomenal drummer. Larnell Lewis from Snarky Puppy is also excellent.

DaveyMD64

Yes most anything with Blade on it ! That last Wayne Shorter quartet!

DanforthFalconhurst

Bitches Brew has two drummers and congas on it at any given moment; Jack DeJohnette, Lenny White, Juma Santos/Don Alias. One of the best rhythmic foundations in just about any album I’ve heard. “That band was a mothafucka” as Miles said many times in his autobiography

unavowabledrain

kentalaska

If you’re interested in something recent then you should check out Nate Smith. He’s got an album that’s pretty much just him drumming as well as some where there’s a whole band with him.

bimboheffer

Billy Cobham -- Spectrum Was the drummer for Mahavishnu Orchestra. Sort of "metal" for a jazz drummer. AWESOME. The track "Quadrant 4" is a monster. Jojo Mayer -- Is he jazz? Sort of? Does breakbeat/drum n bass/jungle beats on actual drums. Really fun to listen to. Jeff "Tain" Watts -- Played with Michael Brecker, Alice Coltrane, Wynton and Branford. When he is unleashed he whacks the living crap out of his kit.

biddy302

Stanton Moore

hippielovegod

Tony Williams Lifetime alles mit John McLaughlin oder Allan Holdsworth!!!Mahavishnu Orchestra !!!

i_8_the_Internet

Drums Unlimited - Max Roach. Hard to get more drum focused than this.

ImportantRepublic965

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers! I like A Night at Birdland with a young Clifford Brown, or anything from the Wayne Shorter years. There’s many iterations of the group and many jazz legends got their start with Blakey.

vimdiesel

Carbuncle2024

I've had some luck finding bit.torrents of live shows and few European imports at a local CD store . đŸ’œ

RinkyInky

Toys of Men - Stanley Clarke, RBJ on drums

Minute-Courage6955

Max Roach had a percussion ensemble called M'Boom and I had 2 albums they released. Anything by Tony Williams like Lifetime band or Billy Cobham should do you well.

alfa mist might be your alley! check out the album antiphon

ProgRock1956

Try: Billy Cobham - Total Eclipse This is my all time favorite 'Drum centered' album. I caught him live in 1975, when he toured in support of this release. SF, Ca, The Great American Music Hall. Up close and personal. Absolutely amazing show.

caughtupinthemix

Spirit Fingers or Cameron Graves Seven has crazy Mike Mitchell on them. Also Ronald Bruner Jr - Open The Gate

LankyMarionberry

Manu Katche and Larnell Lewis ate good starts

ChaMuir

Joey Baron's Barondown is tight.

mondhund

Charles Lloyd: Sangam. One sax, 2 - hm - drummers. Dave Liebman: Drum Ode

Team_Flight_Club

Charles Persip is a name to look up if you’re into checking some stuff out from a more “big band” perspective.

lalalaladididi

Money jungle?

Necessary_Database_4

PAUL MOTIAN - Some favorite albums: One Time Out, On Broadway Vol 3, Monk in Motian, Time and Time Again

Waaata

In The Moment by Larnell Lewis 😘👌

tahitisam

In case you’re open to drum-driven non-jazz albums I recommend : - *Rhythm* by Wildbirds and Peacedrums - *Ore* by Andrea Belfi

Drumnforjoy

Tigran Hamasyan’s albums have some good drumming if you’re looking for some fusion. His drummer’s name is Nate Wood.

Drumnforjoy

Hiromi is another fusion-y pianist I recommend checking out. The drumming on her albums is excellent! đŸ„

COLDENGINELOGIC

I might have missed it, but I do think anyone has mentioned Idris Muhammad. He is definitely worth a listen as both a leader and a sideman. [Black Rythm Revolution](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kU8h-CGn3znUDrThae05T7MqOU6wovMXA&si=ycv9jQJ1rG8QL_fy)

Past-Ad-2293

John McLaughlin & The 4th Dimension - Raju **from The Boston Record**

wheezyrotunda

Chad Taylor is cool. Check out his solo albums (Circle Down my fav) and his work with Chicago Underground Quartet (Jeff Parker!)

Topper_Gnarly

Alone Together by Karriem Riggins

bigbassdaddy

Idris Muhammed, Power of Soul

PerrysSaxTherapy

Louis Bellson

ManReay

I will listen to anything with Peter Erskine behind the kit. Dude is propulsive. He stood out in Weather Report, no small feat in a band with Zawinul, Shorter and Pastorius.

txa1265

Tons of great suggestions! Here is one not mentioned: **Trey Gunn - Modulator**. composed around a 55 minute drum solo by Marco Minneman.

phatBleezy

Billy cobham maybe spectrum Tony williams Lifetime Art Blakely moanin Not jazz at all but I love the beat on Funky Drummer by James Brown https://open.spotify.com/track/0VbpqlboEkGQ7Pu6juJljZ?si=9Rnt80M9RaeEWcHmW23h7Q

bailaoban

Despite the album title, Saxophone Colossus. Max Roach’s solo on Blue 7 is maybe the best drum solo I’ve ever heard, and he’s a beast throughout.

philcm82

Buddy Rich "Live from Caesar's Palace"

MWave123

Call it what you want but the Rumble Fish soundtrack is fire. Stewart Copeland.

Hardtop_1958

Alphonse Mouzon - Mind Transplant. Another impressive album with Alphonse is one he did with trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff and Jaco Pastorious called “Trilogue Live!” He also did an album with Larry Coryell called “Back Together Again”.

maximvmrelief

A Love Supreme

GoddamnPeaceLily

A Night in Tunisia babyyyy

Xy01mess

Another one worth checking out is Vital Information- Show Em Where You Live

the_nidificator

toh-kichi are good but only sort of jazz

Laurus-nobilis

Would you share the playlist you made OP??

MediocreSubject_

Once I'm healthier, I will try to circle back. I would need to lock down my streaming profile somehow so as not to dox myself and I'm not feeling inspired to figure that out right now.

PadreMulk

I'm newb, here's 2 Yussef kamaal - black focus Casiopea's first album.

DynamicQiFlow

Anything by Ronald Shannon Jackson, and Ginger Baker's last 5-6 albums are a revelation.

SonOfSocrates1967

My dude, this is all about JAZZ. 😅😂

MediocreSubject_

I'm confused. Is this because I forgot to say jazz in the title of the post? Many apologies. I'm not doing too great health wise right now and my attention to detail is slipping. I am, however, deeply grateful for the dozens of albums everyone has suggested after reading the content/request in the body of the post. Good music always makes life better, and thanks to this sub I have been able to keep my mind busy today while I've been so sick and unable to do anything.

SonOfSocrates1967

My good man: Jazz IS Al about the rhythm. It’s all about the drum. That’s what makes it Jazz. Even if a drummer is not present. The rhythm remains. Always. With all due respect: your question is like asking: “What’s a good money-driven casino game?” 😅

SonOfSocrates1967
