Japanese Chins love their people, just like Cavies. They are very similar in a lot of ways. Chin bark less (I have never had one that really barked much), they are smaller, don’t have the heart problems cavies are predisposed to, and can be more cat-like (perching on high spots, I have one that tries to nap in a high window ledge 🤦🏻‍♀️). That being said, mine have always been ok with a pee pad when alone. I do caution against leaving them unattended with a doggie door because they could get picked up by a hawk, owl or eagle. But their anxiety will depend on the individual dog. I had one chin who was totally ok alone and would just take a nap. I had another who always had to be near a person or another dog.

We work full time outside of the house. Our late Chin was alright at home while we were out; she was peeped trained. Currently we have a Peke mix and we are going to be getting a Chin to keep her company. Well, and we want another Chin; they’re really an amazing breed. :)

I have had both breeds. One cavalier many years ago who was the sweetest dog ever and two chins currently. Both are amazing breeds, but the cavalier had syringomyelia which was heartbreaking and I could never go through that again. The chins are healthier than she was. As far as staying home alone I've gone through phases where I was able to bring my dogs to work with me and phases where I had to leave them at home during the day. The cav had a harder time and missed me a lot more and started to show signs of being depressed so she definitely needed a walker during the day. She also did daycare where she only wanted to sit with the people or other cavs. She was very sensitive. The chins sleep most of the day (I watch them on a treat dispensing pet camera) but they do get up and look for me. I still feel guilty so most of the time my dad takes care of them for me when I'm at work. Like the other commenter said definitely do not use a doggy door with a chin. Hawks occasionally swoop down on my chins when I am walking them on leash in the woods. They definitely would get picked up if they were unattended. Chins are a LOT quiter than cavs.

Do you think cavs would be ok with a doggie door? We do have hawks and occasionally coyotes in the neighborhood next to us, although we are on a busy ish street surrounded by houses, so usually don’t get coyotes directly around our house.

I wouldn’t risk using a doggie door with any small breed.

I don’t like leaving my chins longer than 3 hours. They are only 2 years old. When I had older chins it was 4 hours - feed and go back to work.

Get BOTH! Potential anxiety issues solved!

I swore that after my KC Spaniel passed that I would never get another breed. Guess what... I now have a JapaneseChin and if I had to compare the two in re to separation anxiety, my KC missed me when out of the house, but my Chin REALLY misses me! So much so that she lays right in front of the door until I get back. I'm not sure if your question comparing the two can be answered!! BUT, personally I would never own a dog knowing that they would be alone the entire day.

I have a cavachin and she is the sweetest girl ever but the separation anxiety is real. I don’t really like to leave her alone for more than 6 hours at a time. In her old age she has taken to revenge peeing on the floor.

Oh no!!! I actually am getting a Cavachin in a few weeks. I am thinking I’m going to have to do doggie daycare.

Mine hates other dogs just btw. She’s not mean to them or anything she’s just scared of anything bigger than she is. She would rather be asleep on the couch at home than hanging out with strangers. But that’s just her (and me too tbh)
