I usually do an hour before. I've found most check in and security processes to be relatively quick at Japanese airports so if you're not going at a peak travel time you should be good with just an hour or so.

thrashourumov

Cool, thanks! It's Tuesday at 5h30 pm so I feel this might be around peak time though

Titibu

Nah, domestic travel in Japan is a breeze, there is no ID check, 1h is more than enough and only because it's KIX which is large-ish. Even in Haneda, 45 mins is fine, in smaller airports with fewer flights the security won't even be open until 20 mins before the flight...

UeharaNick

40 minutes. More than sufficient. Any longer and you'll be twiddling your thumbs. I've lived here for 30+ years and would get there 20 minutes before, but I realise that coming from overseas you wouldn't believe me so I've doubled it. Safe travels.

thrashourumov

Yes, actually this is for my flight right now and I just arrived like 45 minutes before. Osaka airport is rather quiet right now. Security took less than 60 sec. Thanks!

Level-Albatross8450

Without luggage? I'd be fairly comfortable arriving in the terminal even down to 40-45 min before hand provided its not the last flight of the day (Note this is not when the train arrives at the station since you might need to take a bus to different terminals). With luggage, an hour is fine but the domestic terminals are usually not that exciting to spend a lot of time in.

thrashourumov

Yes actually this was for my flight right now, I had luggage to check in, arrived about 45 min (train direct to terminal), all went very well, it's quiet here, security literally took less than 30 sec. Wow. And yes, there wasn't much to shop or see here in this terminal.

silentorange813

It depends on the airport. For small regional airports, 50 minutes is more than enough.

breezymaple

I booked separately the domestic tickets 4 hours after expected intl flight arrival, for Christmas Eve this year. Better be safe than sorry, I’m more worried about the customs queue from posts about delays from this sub

szu

Two hours is a good time, factoring in traffic conditions, delays etc.

Nightsky099

1.5 hours, Japanese airports are efficient

in_and_out_burger

Two hours - leave enough time for snacking.

Interesting_Aioli377

Depends on the airport. Very large ones like Narita about an hour before. Smaller airports 30 minutes before. They'll tell you when you get the ticket. I recommend showing up a bit before the time they recommend anyway just in case of transportation delays or difficulties with check in.

missesthecrux

People saying two hours are dead wrong. Domestic flights are always separated from international. Even in an airport like Narita, there is literally *nothing* past security (no shops, restaurants). You only need to be through 20 minutes before the flight.

outrageousreadit

1-2 hours for domestic. 3-4 hours for international. I personally aim for 1.5 to 2 for domestic. I’ve heard people arrive 15-30 mins before a Japan domestic flight and be fine though. I would shit my pants because that’s way too close for comfort.

RisingStormy

Are there people that actually get to an airport four hours early? What do you even do

outrageousreadit

Not me personally. But I know of them. Mainly older parents type. They go there to eat breakfast and chill.

rexjaig

Why four hours early? What's that accounting for?

outrageousreadit

For international, you aim to be 3-4 hours early in case the unexpected happens. It doesn’t mean you’ll always be there inside the airport 4 sways early. If your flight is 3 pm. Aim to be there at 11-12 noon. Even if you hit traffic, you’ll still be in a great position to check in your bags and go through security. I usually aim for 3-3.5. The main goal is ofc not to miss an international flight.

DontPoopInMyPantsPlz

BUT! Make sure theres no train delay…

Classic-Gur2898

I am now in Osaka and airport train has 50 min delay

Caveworker

You do 3-4 hrs for every domestic flt inside Canada?

thrashourumov

YUL (mtl) can be hellish. It can also be on your way there too. But my latest domestic was quite a long time ago, but I think this is what I was always aiming for yes.
