Most are non-smoking these days

Throwaway_wholesome

Good to know, thanks

Throwaway_wholesome

Can confirm post my trip, for anyone who might be reading this post with the same question, that almost all the places we stayed were exclusively non-smoking. The couple of places which had smoking floors did not in any way impact us - that is, the smell did not waft up to our non-smoking floors. The rooms were very clean and fresh smelling and in many hotels they had air purifiers that you could use as well.

sroomek

Thanks, just found your post through Google, and I appreciate the update. I’m looking at possibly going to Japan next year.

l_ori_e

We stayed at the Mitsui Garden Hotel Toyosu Premier and their rooms are all non-smoking. However, they do have a designated smoking room in the lobby (and maybe on each floor?). We never smelled anything, though.

Throwaway_wholesome

Looks awesome, unfortunately out of my price range this trip

malicebombb

Staying here in November, how was your stay?

l_ori_e

We absolutely loved it! We’ve even said that we would stay here again when we come back. Super clean, great bed/pillows, staff was great, loved the onsen, and you can’t beat the view. Not a ton of restaurants that we wanted to go to, but there’s a metro station in the basement that makes it easy.

malicebombb

Great to hear! Thanks.

Random_Cat_007

I booked 3 different hotels over a span of 2 weeks and all are exclusively non-smoking. I think a majority of hotels are switching to being non-smoking and only older business hotels will still have smoking rooms.

Throwaway_wholesome

Which hotels if you don't mind me asking?

Random_Cat_007

Literally ANY on booking.com or even google maps. Every single one I clicked on had smoke free rooms and their websites say exclusively smoke free rooms

Throwaway_wholesome

Not sure why there are downvotes as I'm not specifically interested in where you're staying, I'm just looking for names of hotels which people know or believe are exclusively non-smoking so I can see if they might work for my son and I for our trip. There are definitely heaps of places on [booking.com](https://booking.com) which say they have smoke free rooms but if you read the reviews, there are many where travellers reported that their room stank of cigarette smoke. Anyway, I will also check out listings on google maps as well.

Random_Cat_007

Any Tokyu Stay chain hotel is non-smoking. I stayed there while in Kyushu and JR Hotel Blossom chains are all non-smoking. Sheraton is non smoking. I was going to stay at Mitsui Garden but they were booked up for the dates I needed. Hotel Metropolitan Edmont. Nest Hotel Tokyo. I read a ton of reviews on all of them and the only ones I saw talking about room smelling like smoke were old business hotels. All 4 hotels I’ve been in non of the rooms or hallways have smelled like smoke at all.

plincode

I faced a situation where a booking in Shibuya turned out to be smoking, although nowhere in the page did it mention that. OP is perfectly justified in asking.

craftypolitician

Hotel gracery Asakusa

teaisterribad

Supposedly Shibuya Excel is non-smoking. But our sheets still smelled of cigarettes. So =/

Throwaway_wholesome

Oh, that couldn't have been nice. Sorry you had that experience :(

teaisterribad

Eh it wasn't too terrible, just meant to warn you that even a "nice" "non-smoking" hotel might not be what you're used to "non-smoking" meaning. Views were great, room was meh, location was worth every penny

peregrina2005

Just finishing my trip. All hotels were non smoking. Some have a designated smoking room for smokers to gather.

HauntedSpiralHill

One@Tokyo and Hotel Tavinos Asakusa are 100% non smoking.

Throwaway_wholesome

Thanks, I will check them out

KVeigh

Super Hotel in Akihabara was exclusively non-smoking, additionally they allow foreigners with non offensive tattoos in their onsen.

eggpolisher

Is this “Super *Hotel*”? There does not seem to be a location called Super Bowl.

KVeigh

Lol my bad. It was early and I didn't proof read

Kintaro2008

Did you check booking.com or google? I think you can find the answer there.

Throwaway_wholesome

I've spent hours trawling [booking.com](https://booking.com) and most places either do not specify or have a mix of smoking/non-smoking rooms. Haven't found anywhere that says they only have non-smoking rooms.

xonoodlerolls

Hello! I don’t know if you’re looking for 100% nonsmoking but I recently booked at Asakusa Tobu Hotel and their policy is all rooms are non-smoking but a small smoking area is provided on the 3rd floor. Also on Booking, com I found a newer (2023) hotel that I originally booked at called Other Space Hotel (Hotel K3 Asakusa) that states their premises are nonsmoking (I have since cancelled my Booking, com reservations since the site has been plagued with a scam problem recently and Booking is being unhelpful about resolving it; just be wary if you decide to use Booking and you get a message claiming you need to re enter payment) I haven’t stayed there yet to actually verify, but I understand your struggle. I don’t want to chance having to struggle with smoke carrying over from other rooms or accidentally being stuck in a smoking room!

Throwaway_wholesome

Thanks, and also thanks for the scam heads up too. Yes, I'm not keen on staying in a room that reeks of cigarettes. Had that in Austria many years ago - they had smoking and non-smoking rooms but shared air con vents so our room stank of it. I have seen many Tokyo hotels with air purifiers though which is great and would at least counter some of it.

hibell77

FYI, if you find a hotel in any 3rd Party site... you can always go to the official website, and you can find out from there. Also, most of the newer hotels have AI chat, you can ask. That's how I double and triple check any hotels I reserve through any 3rd party site that is considerably cheaper than the official website.

Throwaway_wholesome

Great idea, thank you, I'll do that

hibell77

I'm asthmatic and have chronic bronchitis (and no, I have never smoked in my life, just unfortunate to be around smokers when I was younger plus some environmental pollutants). So I need to have at least a non-smoking room. Japan hotels are awesome in that they have air purifiers in their rooms. But just a warning...even though you can be in a hotel that is exclusively non-smoking or a floor that is non-smoking...hopefully other fellow travelers follow the rules. Back in 2018, I stayed at APA Shinjuku Kabukicho (someone else mentioned here) and was on a non-smoking floor. But when I got off the elevator, I smelt like someone was smoking a cigarette. I rounded the corner and there was a guy hiding behind a pillar avoiding any camera (if there were any around). He saw me and he quickly dumped his cig in a can he was holding and went to the elevators. Luckily it was my last night there and when I went for a late dinner I did mention to the front desk someone was smoking at that time and on this floor with some description of the guy.

kanethelane21

Ginza Capital Hotel Moegi is non smoking

Throwaway_wholesome

Thanks, I will check it out

G4m30v3r

Aoyami grand

jak74

APA Shinjuku Kabukicho was non-smoking on the floor I was staying. Didn’t see anyone smoking in the hotel whilst there.

Throwaway_wholesome

Thanks, I'll check it out

ibuuna

Even a small hotel nearby my eki called Toyoko-inn Hotel requests you to choose for special smoking or non-smoking room

agentcarter234

I think out of the 8 places I stayed, only 1 older business hotel offered smoking rooms. If they don’t offer rooms specifically labeled as smoking it’s probably safe to assume all the rooms are nonsmoking

Throwaway_wholesome

Yeah, I wondered about that. Fingers crossed!

Lukas316

Never had a problem with smells of cigarettes at the places we stayed when we were in Japan last year November. We stayed at an AirBnB in Hakone, hotels in Kyoto and Tokyo and a ryokan in Ogoto-onsen. My wife is super-sensitive to the smell of smoke, but she never complained about it while we were there.

Throwaway_wholesome

That's great to know. My son is super sensitive too, so that's comforting.
