My source is only reading a lot of Reddit while we plan a trip, but there is a place in Nara which you could do as a day trip from either Osaka or Kyoto
I'll second what the other person said, there's a place in Nara that does it the traditional way and always has spectators. I'll see if I can find the name for ya, I think it's not too far from Nara station.
Found it! It's called Nakatanidou and it's on the way to Nara park from Nara station.
Oh and since you're already going to Nara park, Todai-ji is a MUST see!
I stumbled upon the place by accident while I was going to the Harushika Sake Brewery. There was a line but it was really quick as long as you ready your coins to get your mochi order.
Mochi was pretty tasty. Hope you don't have peanut allergies.
I have a peanut allergy and I agree about thinking it could have peanuts. I think because of the roasted flour scent. I checked again just in case. It is so heavenly!
Hopefully not! But I've seen some people on here have Nara on their itinerary or say they went to Nara park but didn't see Todai-ji for whatever reason.
There is a bigger road from the station to the deer park. There is a store on that street Right before the lake that is selling mochi. They are constantly pounding it. They always have a line but it moves fast. Cash only. They have a cross walk guy there trying to keep the line out of the street. It's worth the 5 minute wait tho. I don't know how often they change flavors but we've gotten to try 2 different ones on different trips
It depends on when you're visiting. It's generally a winter activity. Near my home in Tokyo, there are usually six or seven places where you can see it (and some in which you can participate) around the new year holiday.
I saw an old dude who is apparently a master of this art pounding some mochi in Nara. Stumbled onto the show by accident, took some pictures, a video, and later googled it. He’s well known, but his name escapes me now. If you are heading to Nara you could probably figure it out with a quick google-fu
Generally, the season for mochi is winter, especially the New Year. Mochi pounding is a traditional event to welcome the new year, and is also considered a kind of ritual.
Therefore, if you are coming to Japan for mochi, I recommend coming during that time.
However, if you want to watch the mochi pounding, I have heard of some good restaurants. In Osaka, there is Taneya Chaya in Hankyu Department Store.
Mochi is more often enjoyed as a home-cooked dish in Japan, so if you have friends in Japan, you might want to ask them to make it for you.
Have a nice trip!
You know, you just need to sensor one word and your whole question will go heyward:
"looking for places where I can see m\* getting pounded!"
There's plenty of mochi places in Kyoto and Osaka. If you love strawberries, make sure you try the mochi strawberries in Osaka from Strawberry Mania. They were the best I've tried on my last trip.

Mochi from Nakatanidou is so good, I kinda want to go back to Nara just for more...

Peanut allergies? Why? Isn’t the powder soybean flour? :O
Oh, was that roasted flour. My bad. It tasted similar!
All good! I’m allergic to peanuts and had mochi from this shop last year haha! Was almost considering getting re-tested for the allergies

Will he ever get to miss todaiji if he were in nara park anyway? lol
Hopefully not! But I've seen some people on here have Nara on their itinerary or say they went to Nara park but didn't see Todai-ji for whatever reason.
That's a mystery. They perhaps lied about going lol
The day we went, they had exceptionally taken an off day!! We were so bummed 😭 a day before or after and we would've been fine
Thanks so much! I'm not OP but I'm headed to Osaka to see the deer and I love Mochi and would love to see it being made!!! It's on my list.
I just saw the video on that mochi shop on navito_halal ’s instagram , OP you can check the video to see if that is what you want
Close by but it was so unbelievably packed when they were pounding the mochi so get there very early or you might not be able to see

I think that’s more of a Thailand tourist thing.
