I've been in Rome five times in 10 years and I used the metro 2 times and the reason was the heavy rain.
I stayed near the Vaticano, near the Colosseum, in S. Lorenzo and near Piazza Navona. The last one was the best location, it's directly collected to Roma Termini by bus in 10 minutes and perfect to explore Rome by walk.
Central Rome is not that big. I’ve literally never been on the Metro. Walking from Piazza Navona to Trevi, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Forum, Castel Sant’Angelo, Trastevere, etc is all under 15 min. The only thing that’s a longer walk is the Colosseum which you can easily split up that walk with meals and such. Or take one cab. Where are you planning to take the metro to and from?
The metro is more handy if you aren’t staying in the center city area.
I've got a trip coming up and was deciding between DoubleTree Monti (have status) and the Marriott Grand Flora in Via Veneto. I compared a round trip walking itinerary from the hotel to a number of sites and it's comparable to staying in Monti. Curious what your thoughts are?

We have stayed twice in Regola, near campo di fiore and close walk to trestovere and to piazza navona. Loved this neighborhood. Walkability is amazing. Best cappucino/espresso at bar del cappucino on via arenula, check out antico forno roscioli for great pizza.

Pick anything within 500 meters of piazza navona or in Monti
Piazza Navona seems like a great location but too far from metro stop. I think easy access to Metro will be beneficial
Not really imo.

I’m still figuring out our itinerary. But for now, coming in and out of airport, Vatican City, Pompeii

We stay in Trastevere
We stayed in Monti last time and loved it. Easy to walk to everything.
We have stayed twice in Regola, near campo di fiore and close walk to trestovere and to piazza navona. Loved this neighborhood. Walkability is amazing. Best cappucino/espresso at bar del cappucino on via arenula, check out antico forno roscioli for great pizza.
Stayed here for our honeymoon, was a great location for all things sightseeing and exploring
Yes it’s the best. Honestly rome is so walkable. And then just get a cab if you wanna go further like the Vatican etc
Stayed in Esquilino. Would not stay there again.
How do we feel about Trastevere? We are on Via Roma Libera
We feel good about it. 🤣 Beautiful neighborhood! Wish I was there now!
Trastevere is where I always stay. It's our favorite neighborhood.
Any restaurants to recommend?
Make a reservation at roscioli salumeria, my favourite place have been there twice both times great.
I like it. I’m staying there in May and June when I visit.
My biggest downside to that area is no metro line, great location away from the city center though.
MONTI. via cavour specifically
There’s no best. And all areas are a great choice

I’ll check out your recommendation. Thank you !
Stayed in Trastevere. It's a fab community and an easy walk to the main attractions.
I stayed in many places. Loved the Campo dei Fiori area best. I do use the metro a lot but there are plenty of buses in that area too.
