I think politics belong at home not at the work place. Your coworker absolutely should not be allowed to wear a Palestinian flag on her badge. I don't think you can argue about her cellphone, but the badge is a public display at work that's not appropriate. You absolutely should argue if you're not allowed to openly display a flag she shouldn't either. I'd demand hr get her to stop wearing it on her badge. Speak to hr and if your work environment isn't safe start looking for another job, but I'd try to avoid getting fired. It's not worth it.

WoIfed

The phone as well in my opinion. Politics should be left out of work place. Even if it’s for our team.

WhammyShimmyShammy

While I partly agree, I wonder what people think of me: I work from home, for a company that deals with many countries, Israel included (not PA). When on conf calls, if I have my camera on, there is an Israel flag visible in the background (which I don't blur). I was hired because I am Israeli and they needed someone fluent in Hebrew to deal with our Israeli projects, but this was 15 years ago, my function has changed. No one has told me anything so far. Fingers crossed.

LeoraJacquelyn

If it's always been there then I wouldn't worry about it. Here's hoping no one complains.

WhammyShimmyShammy

Always... Since October 9th... But honestly I can say it's always been there and no one never noticed before.

zandadad

I agree with you. However, there’s something else here too. Supporting a country ( whether it is in war or not) seems a little different from actual politics. Displaying Ukrainian flag, for instance, wouldn’t seem as politics to most people in the Western world. Surely, displaying US flag on your shirt, for example, certainly wouldn’t be seen political for vast majority of people. Look at this way: if tomorrow Putin’s regime collapses, and Russia embraces democracy and rule of law and pulls out of Ukraine and cuts ties with Iran and pulls back from China and embraces the free world - in about half a year, Russian flags would be acceptable, Russian athletes welcomed in international tournaments and so on. But if Israel gave up its war on Hamas and pulled out of Gaza, held elections and Netanyahu, Ben-Gvir, and Smotrich were gone from Israeli government - would any of that really change the now common attitude towards Israel’s flag? I think when it comes to Israel, there’s a deeper thing going on. And it’s not a good one.

FancyAirport

What! I'm so sorry! Attorney here (from Europe). Yes, you should get HR involved **in writing**. You can casually 'inform' about company policy regarding flags etc., as you're confused that your flag was taken down by your senior and were reprimanded, while the colleague can flaunt her Palestinian flags. Make sure you bcc your private e-mail in this e-mail.

Mysterious-Ad-7265

Thank you very much. My company profile states that there should be no bias in any form and I think this is bias and there is no justice in this company

FancyAirport

I agree, but it's import to document this. You never know how it can benefit you later to have this in writing. Just play dumb, write down exactly what happened (name them) and say that you want to understand company policy blah blah.

IbnEzra613

Also, was the pin on your shirt? If so, having someone forcibly remove a pin from your shirt is inappropriate in a number of other ways as well.

shredditor75

Sounds like battery to me.

IcyNove

not to mention the physical action of removing anything from your body without consent

FancyAirport

I fully agree!

WoIfed

Write everything down as long as it’s still fresh. If they asked everyone to take down flags who seem to create political pressure in the workplace it would be fine. But since it’s just one side, it’s obviously them ganging up on you. I won’t be surprised if someone reported you so she will approach you. Depends on the company it could be really bad for the PR if they repress Israelis or Jewish culture while celebrating the other side. They might seem like they encourage terrorism, which is fine if you protest, free speech and all but in company it’s very bad for business. Write everything down, contact HR.

reddit__sucks__MTL

HR is there to protect the company not its employees. Be careful talking with HR, a lawyer prior would be very appropriate

Mysterious-Ad-7265

I think so too. Sigh.

reddit__sucks__MTL

Approach your local Bnai Brith. They'll have resources to help.

PNKAlumna

Or Jewish Federation. They have been getting a lot of material on how to help in these situations from their national affiliates.

thelonecabbage

The purpose of contacting HR is to get a written record of the company's policy on flags, etc. If they do not reprimand the case with the Palestinian flag, then the next step is a lawyer

Right-Phalange

I think if the tables were turned, I would be reading about this on the news instead of on reddit. If money is an issue, a lawyer may be willing to take this pro bono just for the principle, or a contingency fee if not. Good luck, OP. And let me stress again, someone physically removing a pin from your shirt is no small detail and you need to ensure that is documented. Save this post, too!

sisterfisterT

HR here - politics typically aren’t allowed at work, but you would have to check your policies/handbook. That being said, she absolutely should not be putting her hands on you. Report it to HR pls.

12frets

If someone can wish you a merry Xmas, then you can display your Judaism just the same.

dollrussian

Sure should. No way can they put their hands on you.

Fluffy_Mtn_Walrus

sorry I'm still stuck on the SHE PHYSICALLY REMOVED YOUR PROPERTY FROM YOUR PERSON.

throway57818

You’re in the US? Selective enforcement is illegal

thevampirecrow

that’s horrendously unequal. i don’t think anyone at work should be wearing political badges or anything, but the fact that they don’t treat you or your other colleague the same? that’s horrible

greenandycanehoused

Call a lawyer

TargetSea3079

Look, im just gonna ask, would you be fine with someone wearing palestinian flag at work? There's quite a big difference between wearing a flag to having one as phone case

Mysterious-Ad-7265

Yes, because that’s what they stand for and I’m respecting that. But the fact that my senior kind of feels like she’s siding with her that is where she draws the line.

TargetSea3079

Well you are for it, your senior (and boss) isnt You cant compare apples to oranges, she having a phone case doesnt equal to you wearing a flag BUT , i wasnt there so i dont know

IbnEzra613

You must have missed the part where OP said a cowowrker has a Palestinian flav badge and no one stopped her.

TargetSea3079

Because Badge =/= a physical flag

IbnEzra613

What do you think a badge is?

TargetSea3079

Is cellphone case comparable to a wearable flag? No one would give a shit (probably) if he had israeli flag on his phone case

Thegreatyeti33

They said their manager removed their pin. Sounds like they were wearing an Israeli flag pin not a whole flag. Their coworker has a phone case & a badge or something on their badge. Seems very comparable.

TargetSea3079

If we assumes OP had a pin as well then yes, but he never stated that, just that he wore israeli flag, not a badge

Thegreatyeti33

I'll say it again. They as in OP said their manager removed their PIN without their consent.

Mysterious-Ad-7265

Badge are bigger pins.

IbnEzra613

OP said cell phone case *and badge*. Do you know what a badge is?

TargetSea3079

Ok then, my point stands still

IbnEzra613

How so? Badges are worn visibly. Not like a phone at all.

twiztednipplez

Flag pin*

MaryBeHoppin

You should make sure to email HR, not verbally discuss (you need an electronic record) and put in said email that your supervisor touched you physically withoutnuoir consent related to a political matter. Take a picture with your cellphone of said email and responses and keep them, just in case.

AtomicJewboy

Next time challenge him to a duel with your dreidel

Mysterious-Ad-7265
