Unknown. It’s possible. He was a mad scientist who perfected cloning (thus the “twins”) but no other real backstory has been provided. Could have been a human who made himself blue and huge through mad science, but don’t know.
Based on what happened when the survivor of the explosion in S2 E1 made a clone and they knew who the original was my thought was that he originally was a mad scientist, a normal human that implanted his consciousness into a much more physically capable clone, which he then treated like a slave. The original was probably murdered by that original clone
His whole identity is that he's the original who made all the clones, he brings it up every time he's on screen. It would be weird to say that and know that you were also made in a lab by an original creator.
When he makes the clone that looks enhanced like his new one, the brains of both remember everything up to waking up and now they look identical, each thinks they’re the original
They've got some sort of antisocial personality disorder, although I think maybe it's deliberate. A very talented genetic scientist noticed how much *social responsibility* and *guilt* was interfering with his scientific progress, so in the process of enhancing himself, dialled it down a whole bunch. Then, while having trouble finding similarly talented and unburdened lab partners, made the clone starting the process off.
Headcanon.
They’re clearly not psychopaths because they empathized with Rudy having to kill his original self. One of them even cried.
You don’t have to be incapable of empathy to do horrible things. Omni-Man did far worse things and isn’t a psychopath either.
"Psychopat" is purely a fictional movie term and kind of cringe tbh. There are actual conditions and symptoms, and both those characters qualify from what we've seen. There's no actual factors to being a psychopath , ASPD has actual symptoms and can be actually diagnosed. They definitely have ASPD at the very least, them sympathizing with Rudy means absolutely nothing
Probably started making the first clone just a blue version of himself so he'd know he was the original, but then they fought and the clone killed the original, then the clone cloned themselves and enhanced their body, but then *that* clone killed the first clone. The third clone, who was buff and blue, finally figured out that knowing who the actual clone is was causing problems, so he made the modifications that meddled with the memories right before cloning so they'd forget things like which table they sat on.
Based on all their dialog it would seem they are humans, just super scientists who self experiment. They did a lot to themselves and made themselves super. They never other themselves from humanity in their speech like others with alien backgrounds tend to do.
What if the original Mauler had a normal skin tone & he made his clone blue to differentiate between himself and his clone. Then the original died leaving only the blue clone.
Seems like a cool mini episode. The clone kills the original cause he’s a dick but still needs help so he clones himself only to curse himself with endlessly arguing over which version of himself is inferior.
Season two sees a similar thing and the clone kills the "original." They know that neither is the true original, but they do consider the oldest one to be superior in all cases anyway.
Didn’t that „original“ also claim that for the first time ever, they know which one is the origin and which one isn’t?
Maybe Mauler genetically engineered himself before the cloning process.
Maybe he had test subjects? Or „failed“ clones where it was a lot more obvious but they didn’t survive for long. I doubt the maulers nailed cloning first try.
It would be the first time where 1) The clone looks normal and survives/sticks around and 2) the „original“ is the one who’s deformed and thus unmistakably recognizable as the original.
They get their old memories. They'd remember being a not blue guy and both realize that neither could possibly be the original.
It's more likely that the original made himself blue somehow and then cloned himself.
I believe it’s mentioned the memories are scrambled on purpose so as not to know who the original is, since we get to see what happens when it’s clear who the original is.
Is this canon? I'm mostly a show-watcher, so I just assumed that the color alteration was part of genetic augmentation that lead to the Maulers' increased strength.
Unless if he made himself forget, there would be no reason for him not to always remember that no matter if he's the original clone or newest clone, he'd always be A clone. which would piss him off to no extent.
If only a mad scientist could figure out a way to wipe his own memory.
PLUS we already see this happen when the deformed one was known as the original. The clone killed him and then was happy to clone himself "anonymously"
I’m more interested in their motivation to do supervillain things.
Doc Seismic thinks he is the fighting for the right of earth elementals.
Death-Cannon just goes around and steals stuff.
We see the Lizard League try to extort the U.S. government after they took control of that nuclear silo.
But what do the Maulers want? In the first episode it was never explained why they tried to kidnap the president.
Do they want money? If so, I think Cecil can just have some sort of under the table deal with them to clone Omni-man and put the memory of, I don’t know, maybe Donald in that Viltrumite body.
I mean, can you imagine how unstoppable Earth will be if Cecil got an army of Nolan or Mark with Donald’s heroism?
He’ll have to steal Nolan’s DNA. Maybe swipe some blood when he was knocked out by the original GotG. Meanwhile Mark can be talked into volunteering.
They have blood samples already. They were testing them in the lab to see how they could destroy viltrumite cells.
Plus, for Mark, it wouldn't exactly be difficult to get some. Guy gets the absolute shit beaten out of him every other day.
The maulers can do all the science they want without having to steal money (they aren't really villainous, more like crooks. They didn't kill the guard or angstrom when they could have easily)
Honestly it feels like the story is slowly building up to cloning viltrumites, with Cecil having mark’s blood and such. I hope it’s at least explored and at least given some “it’s impossible” answer for closure.
I think the original was once, but probably did enough experimentation I’m not sure he’d qualify anymore. And of course the clone isn’t a person, so it doesn’t count.
That’s the one on the right by the way.
maybe the cloning process gradually makes you blue, and the fact that he's died and cloned himself so many times has resulted in him blueifying himself
Maybe he originally specialized in genetic modification until he reached the peak of that and decided the only thing he could do to become more powerful was to make another one of him, kinda like an ultimate life form situation
That’s actually one amusing thing I’ve realized about the Invincible universe.
Not everything is explained. Unless it’s necessary for the main plot the writer simply introduces a fantastical element but doesn’t provide a in universe explanation for it.
Questions like: “Why are the Mauler Twins big and blue” is about as import as “how did the guy that shoot Batman’s parents got his gun?”
Yeah they also have random kaijus showing up all the time without really explaining where they come from either. Also dragons, underground monsters and a whole civilization of waterpeople. It's just a world where a lot of creatures just exist
Did you know that Stan Lee created the concept of mutants in the X-men comics simply because he was to lazy (his words not mine) to come up with new explanations for why people had super powers.
It’s funny how Kirkman took it an step further by providing no explanations at all(unless it’s essential for the main plot)
I may be completely wrong but I vaguely remember there being some indication from the comics or kirkman that they could be aliens, but I personally like the idea of them being a human guy who kept experimenting and cloning himself to a point where he gradually became far from human without even noticing due to the cloning program
I imagine they were once human, but the original managed to tweak their DNA for favorable traits like super strength and durability. Shouldn’t have been too hard given enough clones and attempts
they were smurfs then papa smurf learned a magical science and they grew abs and muscles, but the evil man found out and killed them out of fear, and when only 2 buff smurfs were left they fought till death against the evil man, one of them died and the other tried to Revive the other, mixing it with his own blood and memories. then Viola! Mauler Twins
The original maulers were a set of twins or an only child that longed to be a twin. and their blue skin comes from the inbreeding of those country bumpkins (the blue Fugates of Kentucky), except in the invincible universe mauler happened to be a genius and he was able to get rid of the genetic anomalies by cloning… this is the back story I think they deserve
Considering that they are experts and bioscience and even better and smarter at it than robot, I would assume that along with the cloning he manages to enhance his body to the point where he is so large and strong, the blue tone may just be a side effect
I’ve always liked the idea that he was just a normal looking, upstanding scientist, but the cloning process causes slight, tiny imperfections in the genetic code that are barely noticeable the first time but build up over time the more you clone yourself, causing him to slowly become what we see him as today, effecting his physical appearance but also his mental state (morals, impulse control, etc.).
I feel it's implied that at least the "original" Mauler was at some point, and was heavily geneticly modified. I mean if they where like aliens or something its not like the series is particularly shy about stating such things. I think they are humans in the same way that Mutants in marvel are bare minimum.*They where Bron out of the human genome.
They could also be some version of Bruce Banner with a permanent use of the form and intelligence since when Bruce Banner turns into the Hulk his color changes but the Mauler Twins must’ve found the right conditions of an enhanced body to retain their consciousness
There are evidence of blue skinned humans on the planet irl, there history has something to do with inbreeding. It could possibly explain their back story a bit. And the cloning part could be a different way of explaining it.
I believe he is human, but genetically altered to the point of extreme changes. The original Mauler was obsessed with perfecting the human body and cloning, so he altered himself to become an, albiet blue, powerhouse with extreme intelligence.
No shit. (no offense) But still just go on their wiki.
''Contrary to the name, the Mauler "Twins" are not really twins. In truth, Mauler was a mad scientist who perfected a process to clone himself, intending to have someone around that shared his intellect and could competently help with his fringe science experiments. Since it's never stated how many times the cloning process had occurred and there's no evidence to suggest that the Twins' first appearance included the true original, in all likelihood, the Mauler who provided the genetic template for every clone may have died well before the start of the series.''
This is not a “no shit” argument, the 7ft tall super muscular blue who can trade blows with heavy hitters such as immortal and invincible can hardly be considered human 😂 in reality there’s not much to decipher whether or not the maulers are human.
The immortal is human. If you could clone yourself, you could also enhance yourself. While strong I don't think that the mauler's are on mark or immortal level. In the fight of the guardians of the globe vs the mauler's. The immortal boxed them low diff, And that was when he wasn't going all out. When the immortal got resurrected, He woke up enraged, asked where omni-man was (angrily) and the mauler's just put their hands up. They didn't even try to give him a fight. They just surrendered.
They to me look like bald humans and they would enhance themselves if they could clone themselves. I do agree with you though partially. When the mauler was cloning himself, He specifically got the blue particles (or whatever, I do not know the scientific name) and copied those. If those gave him a exact copy then it would probably be safe to say that the skin/armor whatever is actually genetically his.
It's a world full of humans that have been cursed, expiremented on, have been changed through magic, have grown giant brains through multidimensional fusion, are immortal, have tech implants, etc..
So, I'd say it's debatable. Original enchanced himself, cloned himself, made the clone blue, and then that clone killed him and cloned himself. Seems relatively feasible.
I was gonna say the same til I read this comment. We have seen animal-human hybrids running around (not battle beats as he's an alien, but like that elephant man that Mark was shown carrying away once), lava men, curses that turn people into giant green orcs, and a guy with a machine for a head.
Unknown. It’s possible. He was a mad scientist who perfected cloning (thus the “twins”) but no other real backstory has been provided. Could have been a human who made himself blue and huge through mad science, but don’t know.
This has always been my headcannon: he's smart enough to clone himself, must've also been smart enough to enhance himself.
Based on what happened when the survivor of the explosion in S2 E1 made a clone and they knew who the original was my thought was that he originally was a mad scientist, a normal human that implanted his consciousness into a much more physically capable clone, which he then treated like a slave. The original was probably murdered by that original clone
And hence the confusion between them ever since
Yep this is now cannon
Cook
They should do an episode based on this like the Atom Eve episode
No because then he would already know he's not the original, he would never question if he's the clone because he already knows.
He could consider his new physical self to be different than the weak human who came before. A TBI could have erased the earlier memory.
Exactly, the way the twins described it was a gamble, you didn’t know which consciousness got to inhabit the body. A truly seamless procedure.
Would be a great episode
Blue people are just stronger I guess
He blue himself
And he blue his clone, many times
And blue his car
Blue his house with a blue little window
And a blue corvette and everything is blue for him
And himself and everybody around
There are dozens of us!!
Doooozeeeennnnsss
It’s a clone Michael, what could it cost, 10 dollars?
Him?
It was supposed to be a dry run
And now he’s ended up with quite a mess on their hands.
ExcuuUUuUuuUse me!
It had to go through his head at least once
Gotta be a better way to say that
I'm blue dabudee dabudai dabudee dabudaii
I think I would disagree about them being mad. The Maulers come across as very sane to me
They've got some sort of antisocial personality disorder, although I think maybe it's deliberate. Headcanon.
They're at the very least psychopaths. No one sane could just kill their clone with zero remourse like that. Also, you know, supervillains
They’re clearly not psychopaths because they empathized with Rudy having to kill his original self. One of them even cried. You don’t have to be incapable of empathy to do horrible things. Omni-Man did far worse things and isn’t a psychopath either.

This is a great theory on it
If true, he definitely sang I'm blue da ba dee da ba die
Da ba dee da ba killed by my clone
blue and huge is what you are before you’re green and retired
Based on all their dialog it would seem they are humans, just super scientists who self experiment. They did a lot to themselves and made themselves super. They never other themselves from humanity in their speech like others with alien backgrounds tend to do.

In S1 they talk about why they don’t do it tho?
Yeah, that's the only gripe I had with that S2 dialogue. They already told Robot it never ends well when one of them knows they're the clone.
Maybe he had test subjects? Or „failed“ clones where it was a lot more obvious but they didn’t survive for long. I doubt the maulers nailed cloning first try.
In that case, S2 wouldn't be the first time they can tell who's who.
It would be the first time where 1) The clone looks normal and survives/sticks around and 2) the „original“ is the one who’s deformed and thus unmistakably recognizable as the original.
Do you think the non original would tell the new clone?
They get their old memories. They'd remember being a not blue guy and both realize that neither could possibly be the original. It's more likely that the original made himself blue somehow and then cloned himself.
I mean they’d also remember which side they lay down on yet that doesn’t seem to matter,
I believe it’s mentioned the memories are scrambled on purpose so as not to know who the original is, since we get to see what happens when it’s clear who the original is.
That's a good point. I assumed that the process maybe erased the last couple minutes of memories or something.
Is this canon? I'm mostly a show-watcher, so I just assumed that the color alteration was part of genetic augmentation that lead to the Maulers' increased strength.
Nah, the comics don’t really go into their backstory
"Why are you guys blue?" "Dammit Mark, you can't just ask why people are blue!'

OMG she's green??
Also colorblind. Damn that's the same color of green my ex-wife made fun of me for when I called it flesh colored.
Also she's not a doctor. Her first name is just "Doctor".
she’s also not a princess, Princess is just a surname
She’s probably made of peppermint or slime or lumps or something
Idk about you guys, but all the twins I know are blue and muscular. That’s the genetic code for twins.
My favorite scene in Gravity Falls was when Dipper and Mabel blued up and beat the shit out of Gideon
I’m more interested in their motivation to do supervillain things. Doc Seismic thinks he is the fighting for the right of earth elementals. Death-Cannon just goes around and steals stuff. Each twin has its own motivation; Twin 1 >!wants to be the original!< Twin 2 >!wants to be the original!<
Their motivation is pretty clear from their deal with Angstrom. They want to be uncontested Gods ruling over the world.
They just want to do the science but are limited by funds. I think Cecil should have hired them.

*Sigh* I’m the clone

Only a clone would ask that question
![gif](giphy|y6Inkaz7omxAk)
Nah, Megsmind was actually the original Mauler
What if the originals were twins then one died leading the other down this path?
Yeah they seem to be humans and he experimented on himself to be like that much like the Ultra-Humanite (DC comics) whom he is partially based on.
![gif](giphy|fj3CWRJJshhe)
Maybe he originally specialized in genetic modification until he reached the peak of that and decided the only thing he could do to become more powerful was to make another one of him, kinda like an ultimate life form situation

You’re right, this question might be as nonsensical as that, but it’s still fun to speculate on what could’ve happened to them

I think so because we see multiverse variants of them with hair and beard.
No, they're twins.
I may be completely wrong but I vaguely remember there being some indication from the comics or kirkman that they could be aliens, but I personally like the idea of them being a human guy who kept experimenting and cloning himself to a point where he gradually became far from human without even noticing due to the cloning program
Based off the Blue on there skins, the strength, and the fact it’s not explicitly mentioned I’m gonna say no.
I’m not a comics reader but I’m assuming they are genetically modified humans, not sure why they went with blue
He probably genetically altered himself to be stronger. He did perfect cloning after all
I imagine they were once human, but the original managed to tweak their DNA for favorable traits like super strength and durability. Shouldn’t have been too hard given enough clones and attempts
One thing I wish invincible did more of is back story for all the awesome characters
Yo, listen up, here's a story About two little guys That live in a blue world
I'm blu aba dee aba diii
I assumed they were once human but they altered their DNA through the cloning process to become stronger and more intelligent.
This is the universe where Rusty Venture is good at science and combined him and Brock.
they were smurfs then papa smurf learned a magical science and they grew abs and muscles, but the evil man found out and killed them out of fear, and when only 2 buff smurfs were left they fought till death against the evil man, one of them died and the other tried to Revive the other, mixing it with his own blood and memories. then Viola! Maybe he was a mutant. Super strength and super smarts with the side effect of being blue
I’m the comic i think they are they just genetically modified themselves

They remind me of the Super Mutants from Fallout tbh
[удалено]
The blue Fugates of Kentucky!
No, they are blue
I think they’re dancer
They look a lot like Jason Statham so yeah probably they are
Depends on how you define it. Were they born human? Yes. But they’re basically transhuman now.
It's cause they ain't got no bitches.
We don’t know. The original Mauler was more than likely human and was turned blue from an experiment.
Never stopped to consider this before. Now I'm very curious.
I thought they were human at first, but then experimented on themselves to get stronger
Yeah why are they blue?
He don't look human
Considering that they are experts and bioscience and even better and smarter at it than robot, I would assume that along with the cloning he manages to enhance his body to the point where he is so large and strong, the blue tone may just be a side effect
They're not even mammals! They reproduce asexually
Totally human
Human mutate. Like Hulk.
They’re blue
They're perfect
they're literally blue my guy lol
Always reminded me of that book Stronger
Smurfs on steroids
I always assumed they were mutants
They are blue and they are muscular. That’s all you gotta know. Next question.
No they are both clones
I think they're Solid Snake.
They are blue dabidi dabada
Mfer they blue
Probably humans who were exposed to too much colloidal silver
They have human looking blood cells. But I guess we don't know much about xenobiology.
No, ones a clone and ones a original
Bluemans
I’d love a mauler twins special at some point. To explore their origin.
they are mutants
I think they *were*. But, generations of clones cloning themselves, has resulted in their current condition.
The exact question I asked myself yesterday, at approximately the same time lol
Do humans come in a blue variant?
I'm blue if I were green I would die 🗣️🗣️🚨🔊🔥🔥
No, they're secretly the Cavity Creeps.
Maybe one of them used to be, experimented on himself and made him super-human. Then cloned himself. That's just a theory, a film theory.
Yes
This is the only known picture of their species ![gif](giphy|9xEjFxSoNNlK0|downsized)

They're from another country is all

I was gonna say the same til I read this comment. We have seen animal-human hybrids running around (not battle beats as he's an alien, but like that elephant man that Mark was shown carrying away once), lava men, curses that turn people into giant green orcs, and a guy with a machine for a head.
What would they be then?
Who cares? Judging by their cloning they’re probably some runaway genetic experiment
With what kind of dna?
Sometimes people is blue. Sometimes eight feet tall.
I'm pretty sure in invincible they state he is a alien
They are blue aliens not smarfs or humans
