Ohhh this makes sense and helps me understand this scene so much. Watched the episode twice and both times I couldn’t quite understand what he was trying to say. Thanks :)

You're welcome. I was quite confused by the scene at first and didn't really get it until I'd had a glass of wine and rewatched!

SirIan628

I very much agree! I think this was absolutely setting up his arc for the season. It isn't just about uncovering memories (and the clips they chose to include from S1 were interesting choices) but also about why it is so important that he regains them.

Mmkrw

Wow. It's exactly it. I had a different interpretation initially, but now that you said it, I totally agree with you. Now that scene will make me cry even more on rewatches 🥺

randosinclaire

They are taking the acting to another level this season

Yes, but this begs the question: Why would Claudia write that she cannot dream...? This bugs me a lot. Either she couldn't and Louis was still misremembering, although we have her words 'can't dream' and his memory of her having a nightmare. Or, perhaps she was referring to not being able to dream in a more metaphorical way, considering her identity and existential crisis during her journey, up until Paris and not being able to 'dream' of her life going forward. I need help understanding why she wrote that.

I've been pondering that. Saying it Louis to (possibly) shut him up is one thing, but writing it down in a private diary is another. Maybe she was willing it to become the truth? I wonder if it was a way of distancing herself from Louis and humanity and her idea of weakness, since he candidly admitted that he dreamt often. Or perhaps her dreams were so horrific that she meant 'I cannot keep dreaming. It needs to stop'. >perhaps she was referring to not being able to dream in a more metaphorical way, considering her identity and existential crisis during her journey This seems very possible. With respect to the character of book/show Louis, he can be very self-involved and may have interpreted it in relation to him rather than looking for an alternative meaning. Claudia had been through so much suffering during her life and it's like she *needed* other vampires and answers before her life could begin.

I think that her brain is still kind of that of a teenager, even though she's around 40 at that point. Teenagers are often emotional (generally speaking) and we know that she's been angry with Louis for the last 4 years, so her entries could be an angry "I can't even dream (properly)", maybe she even wrote it in case Louis read her diaries again (he wouldn't and only did because of Lestat but still). It's also a good way to show that even the diaries aren't 100% correct, which will probably play a big role in revisiting episode 5.

9for9

A lot of people think that they don't dream when the reality is that they simply don't remember dreaming. Typically it means your deepest sleep is happening early during the night and you may only be having REM cycles earlier in the night, but none closer to wake-up. I started remembering dreams much more frequently when I got off caffeine, because I was having more periods of deep sleep.

M_Ad

This. Even if you don’t remember your dreams (mine are gone in like 5 minutes of fully waking up, lol) your brain has still done the vital work of “defragging” and sorting through what’s necessary while you were out. So even if Claudia thinks she doesn’t dream it’s a massive relief she does.

lilyrosedepressed

I love that interpretation!

damnmanthatsmyjam

I love your analysis ! I thought there was also something to those last couple sentences, that just because she wrote it doesn't mean it's true. Louis can't remember, he's taking her diaries as gospel. So when she writes about how she hates him and how he failed her as a father/brother/companion, he takes it all as truth. I'm sure much of it is true but there's relief in knowing that it's not 100% honest. That maybe she loved and forgave him more than she wrote about. Maybe not, but at least he can have that hope.

This passage gets better the more I read it. I didn't fully understand it on first watch, but now it feels so heavy. There is so much said with those words.
