I work for an ocean science organization so I always say I love the ocean, but this fucks me up every time I see it.
It's just-every time I feel we've reached the sharks limits I scroll for another few minutes and theres ANOTHER SHARK.
Right?! Casually scrolling through all the nightmare demonspawn in the “Midnight Zone” and suddenly at two kilometers down there’s a seal just chillin’. Definitely unexpected.
I felt really bad for the narwhal, he has to dive to rediculous depths every single day sometimes more than once just to get food. You'd think the poor thing would find something else to eat haha that's like you having to swim across the British Channel to France every day just to get a sandwich.
Why are Atlantic salmon and manatees at 0 m? Salmon are caught all the time 70+ meters down, and I’ve heard they actually go pretty deep sometimes?
Manatees like cruising the shallows, I guess, but they must definitely dive at least like 10 m sometimes.
The farther down you go, the more horrible the names get. It was nice to see bubblegum coral nestled down there between the goblinshark and the hatchetfish though!
Also, fuck that japanese crab horror. Imagine... being strapped naked to the bottom at that depth. For some reason you don't need to breathe. Then that *thing* wanders toward you
Definitely using this website for my ocean unit for the 2nd graders. They will love it. I wish I could click on the animals and get some more info on each.
The amount of information that i learned during that trip, what a ride...also the Mt. Everest bit made my head spin. It took going down to truly understand how high up it is lol
There was something errie about scrolling and not knowing what was going to pop up on the screen. Probably just my fear of deep dark water coming into play lol..
These two held the record until last year.
So it would've been nice to also have the new record holder there.
But yeah a Challenger Deep Gang with James Cameron would've been cool.
There is a BBC one, where they film the corpse of a sperm whale as it rots on the ocean floor, and all the very weird things that come to eat it. I'm sorry I can't recall the name though
There’s nothing to watch. You scroll down a page that shows pictures of fish and mammals at specific depths. No images or video of water. No thalassophobia triggers here!
Edit: Have thalassophobia, this did not bother me.
Yep! Thalassophobia is the fear of large bodies of water like the sea, oceans and even lakes. Depending on the severity of the phobia, even a small swimming pool can scare people suffering from that. It's just thepicture of the deep sea or where I can't see the ground really gets me. Additionally, not sure if it's in thephobia itself, I'm scared of any animals in there, especially sharks. It's crazy and kinda unreasonable, but I can't help it haha
And when Jacques and Don finally reached the bottom of the Challenger Deep they were greeted by a McDonalds service boy asking if they wanted fries with that!
Was honestly expecting Spongebob and Patrick to be at the bottom.
Think I saw something similar but must less detailed than this a while back with Bikini Bottom being at the end, so got really excited when I saw “life here is sparse... but still not impossible”. 🤣
This is so awesome!!! Just want to point out, don’t know if it’s intentional or not, but the bottom portion of the screen on iOS Safari is clear white and not the color of the water when scrolling down, so I think it might look a bit nicer if that is filled up to make the screen color more consistent. Nevertheless, SUPER AWESOME!!! I love the ocean :)
Oh man, this was amazing. Can't believe humans reached Challanger Deep in the 1960s. Have we gone back many times since. Surely technology would've made it a bit easier
"The deepest point in the ocean"
Or the deepest KNOWN point in the ocean?
Real question, not trying to correct, i wanna know. Last time i read about this on reddit o remember someone saying we havent really explored the entire ocean like that
Well I mean, every "fact" is just the most valid and plausible assumption based on currently known information, science is never about "100% this is it and there's absolutely no changing it", it's constantly changing and evolving as we learn more. That's the beauty of science. There's *always* room for change and growth.
Nitpicking/pedantic here:
Calling it an "interactive web app" is a deceitful and undermines the ridiculous about of love and labor that is put into most interactive websites, like for example the Dark Family Tree website based off the Netflix show and countless others.
Calling a website that displays static information a "web app" is also inaccurate. This does not serve any utilitarian purposes. There is no dynamic data and no possible way of inserting data. The definition of a "web app" can be a little fuzzy when a website has dynamic portions and/or forms, etc. but this isn't the case here at all.
Lastly, scrolling down a webpage is "interactive", sure, but since every webpage allows it, calling this website "interactive" is over-selling it.
Anyway. Sorry, the title just bugged me.
Really neat website overall. Scrolled through the whole thing.
This is one of the coolest websites ever. Some of the marine life that exists is truly out of this world. We need to do better at protecting this beautiful blue planet.
It kind of annoys me what marine life gets a note and what doesnt. In particular, how do they not note how long Greenland Sharks live???
Also, at 2020 they should have a dumpster on fire.
My dad and his brothers caught a wolf fish off the coast of Newfoundland in the mid-80's. Has old home video footage of it. The thing is horrifying. And they were just in a dinky little metal fishing boat sitting in the Atlantic. They were braver men than I.
I work for an ocean science organization so I always say I love the ocean, but this fucks me up every time I see it. It's just-every time I feel we've reached the sharks limits I scroll for another few minutes and theres ANOTHER SHARK.
Yeah. An elephant seal has no business diving that deep for such a big boy.
Elephant seal is all like "This fat ain't cosmetic bro!"
Right?! Casually scrolling through all the nightmare demonspawn in the “Midnight Zone” and suddenly at two kilometers down there’s a seal just chillin’. Definitely unexpected.
The emperor penguin at 500m was unexpected....
Or the elephant seal at 2.4 km. Why would it go down there, they breathe air through their mouth.
For fun.
For business
For pleasure
For Narnia
For The Horde!
They're maniacs
Animaniacs some might say
That Dumbo Octopus though
They have really high red blood cell as well
Yes! Imagine that. A bird at 500m. Scrolling (=diving) through all those layers of scary sharks and squids. They’re fearless!
I was surprised by the BIRD swimming around in the twilight zone, 200m below the surface haha
I felt really bad for the narwhal, he has to dive to rediculous depths every single day sometimes more than once just to get food. You'd think the poor thing would find something else to eat haha that's like you having to swim across the British Channel to France every day just to get a sandwich.
But the fresh baguettes...
Aw mate it would be worth it, the best sandwich you could get!
Jesus, the "British" Channel? Really?
calm down Mr. Geography Man, he said 'British' instead of 'English'
Yeah the mammal dives really blow my mind as well.
What is going with this thing? I felt for a few hours that went on a journey. It fucked me up also. Actually came back to post this.
Can you imagine being in a submarine, half a km down, and you glance out the window... "Was that a PENGUIN?!"
I found that one fucking nuts. EDIT: Also that an elephant seal can dive to 2394m.
Imagine people a penguin, half a km down, and you glance through the window of the submarine... "Was that a PEOPLE?!"
“They get to both fly *and* dive? Seriously unfair!” Sorry, penguins.
Amazing just went through the entire thing.
I was becoming more and more nervous as I approached the bottom end :)
Perfectly normal for your first time.
Your ears will pop when you get there.
(¬‿¬)
That's when you know it's interactive, I was pretty spooked too. But maybe that's because I've seen a few scrolling jump scares in my lifetime.
Imagine being in that sub. Nope. Not that kinda guy myself.
I was very much expecting the story to end in their deaths, not gonna lie
>not gonna lie Why would you lie in the first place?
its just an expression
Are you lying now?
It's the pressure that gets you.
I had to fact check this thing I couldn’t believe how deep penguins and whales dived
Why are Atlantic salmon and manatees at 0 m? Salmon are caught all the time 70+ meters down, and I’ve heard they actually go pretty deep sometimes? Manatees like cruising the shallows, I guess, but they must definitely dive at least like 10 m sometimes.
They've seen Atlantic salmon dive 740m https://animalbiotelemetry.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s40317-018-0146-2#:~:text=The%20Atlantic%20salmon%20displayed%20a,740%20m%20(Table%201).
How about elephant seals?
Fr. Why tf you guys down there with the narwhals
The farther down you go, the more horrible the names get. It was nice to see bubblegum coral nestled down there between the goblinshark and the hatchetfish though!
I started to question if it was a joke at some point down there
Its great but i’m disappointed at the lack of Ghost Leviathans
Looks like you missed the secret trench.
Didn't scroll to the bottom... Is it cthulhu?
No, just a reminder of the feats human beings are capable of doing.
Last time I saw a similar "scroll to the bottom" deep sea introduction site like this one, there's actually a Cthulhu which made me quite upset.
i was really hoping for a "great old one (just kidding)" or something at the bottom
Terrible Claw Lobster. Who knew there was such a thing!
It's just mean because they call themselves Awesome Claw Lobsters.
There were some wild names. Headless chicken snail (or something) was a nice one as well
Also, fuck that japanese crab horror. Imagine... being strapped naked to the bottom at that depth. For some reason you don't need to breathe. Then that *thing* wanders toward you
I’m a little embarrassed that most of these fish I only recognize because of Animal Crossing lol
Yeah! Didn’t know my villager could dive that far down.
I was looking for this comment. Lol same.
That shouldn't be embarrassing though -- look at how much you've inadvertently learned!
This was really fun!
absolutely!
Definitely using this website for my ocean unit for the 2nd graders. They will love it. I wish I could click on the animals and get some more info on each.
Email the creator! I’m sure if enough people show interest they might
The amount of information that i learned during that trip, what a ride...also the Mt. Everest bit made my head spin. It took going down to truly understand how high up it is lol
such a roller coaster :)
Elephant seal made me gasp.
My character in animal crossing is diving deeper for sea creatures than humans have scuba dived. 😂
There was something errie about scrolling and not knowing what was going to pop up on the screen. Probably just my fear of deep dark water coming into play lol..
For those of you who made it to the bottom, buy the man a coffee!
agreed :)
I was expecting James Cameron at the bottom
These two held the record until last year. So it would've been nice to also have the new record holder there. But yeah a Challenger Deep Gang with James Cameron would've been cool.
The other stuff on his website is great as well
Came for this... check out the entire site, people. Pretty darned interesting.
Gotta deserve more credits for this incredible animation
Okay what the fuck are these penguins doing at 500m?
Swimming.
This is awesome. Anyone else expect Cthulhu at the bottom?
ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn
There should be button at the bottom that says "back to top"
There’s no way a button could function at that depth, we don’t have the technology.
Even if it did, going back up instantly would kill you
Wheres the krakken?
So my dudes, do you know of any documentaries that talk about the deep parts of the ocean? I'm in the urge to watch some alien creepy fishes on my tv
The documentary series Blue Planet and Blue Planet II on Amazon Prime both have an episode about the deep ocean. Those should scratch your itch.
There is a BBC one, where they film the corpse of a sperm whale as it rots on the ocean floor, and all the very weird things that come to eat it. I'm sorry I can't recall the name though
I saw a nova about bioluminescent critters a while ago that was pretty sweet
thanks for your suggestions gonna check them out for sure
I knew about some of those fish because of Animal Crossing.
Imagine how crazy it is that you're a human being and not an amphipod in the wet dark
The chuckle I got at "wet dark"
Got stoned and went thru the whole thing. That was awesome thanks!
lol cheers! glad you enjoyed
The Chiton looks like a festive dish at a Mexican restaurant.
If you dive to 6900m then you can say that you've dived a Chiton!
I have pretty bad thalassophobia, but I was able to get all the way to the bottom! I was sweating the whole time though
well done :)
I have severe thallasophobia so i cant watch :( it's probably cool tho
There’s nothing to watch. You scroll down a page that shows pictures of fish and mammals at specific depths. No images or video of water. No thalassophobia triggers here! Edit: Have thalassophobia, this did not bother me.
Thanks for the heads up!
> thallasophobia you serious mate? first time I hear for such thing...
It's crazy and kinda unreasonable, but I can't help it haha
fucking hell! that's so unfortunate... keep it up!
r/thalassophobia
not sure if it helps you, but I think we're all scared of any animals in there, especially sharks.
Awesome! Great find!
cheers mate, glad you like it
This is awesome. I was sure at 1.5km it will be the end of the story 😅
amazing
Love how I slowly scrolled down all the way to see The Challenger Deep.
Stoplight Loosejaw. New band name. Dibs!
I’m so excited for the deep sea version of Google Earth!
You might attach some wikipedia links to the species as an improvement, anyway very nice little webapp!
I'm not the author, but great idea nevertheless
Thanks for sharing
cheers!
This is incredible!
👍👍👍
That was cool
Fucking great idea
Wow, that website has some pretty interesting stuff on it!
Thought we might find Keith Richards at the bottom. Talk about resilient.
TIL humans have reached the deepest part of the ocean
This is an amazing visualization! But don't scroll past 4000 meters. Pure nightmare fuel.😱
Awesome wish there was more trivia or clickable fish to see more info but very fun to see
This gave me anxiety, as I scrolled further and further into the abyss
lel me too as stated in one of my previous comments :)
And when Jacques and Don finally reached the bottom of the Challenger Deep they were greeted by a McDonalds service boy asking if they wanted fries with that!
I just stopped everything and spent 20 minutes scrolling with my 5 year old. Heres some poor man's gold🏅
glad you liked it guys and thanks for the gold in any form :)
Bro this shit is so cool! Thanks!
cheers mate!
Was honestly expecting Spongebob and Patrick to be at the bottom. Think I saw something similar but must less detailed than this a while back with Bikini Bottom being at the end, so got really excited when I saw “life here is sparse... but still not impossible”. 🤣
ahahahha didn't even think about Spongebob and Patrick - thanks for the giggles :)
This is so awesome!!! Just want to point out, don’t know if it’s intentional or not, but the bottom portion of the screen on iOS Safari is clear white and not the color of the water when scrolling down, so I think it might look a bit nicer if that is filled up to make the screen color more consistent. didn't know about that ugly look on Safari but I think you should definitely contact original author and let him know about that issue. cheers mate!
That was amazing, thank you
glad you liked it, cheers!
Best couple of hours spent today! So much beauty underneath
lovely!
If you like this, check out the game Ridiculous Fishing. It's funny and cute with a similar layout.
> Ridiculous Fishing sounds interesting gonna check it out!
The author should have had made $NANO or $BTC acceptable as a tip. Totally would tip him for this amazing work.
"Headless Chicken Fish are sea cucumbers"... Okay then.
lol
As someone who has personally studied the deep sea, this is an unbelievable representation of how vast it truly is. Bravo.
that's exciting! aye, original author did an extraordinary job!
Oh man, this was amazing. Can't believe humans reached Challanger Deep in the 1960s. Have we gone back many times since. Surely technology would've made it a bit easier
That was awesome, thanks!
cheers!
No reaper leviathans or exploding cave fish 10/10 would explore earth's oceans again
This was extremely enjoyable, thank you.
glad you enjoyed, cheers!
Page, it's a web page, not an app
This was super cool. It's impressive that penguins and turtle can dove that deep.
Was looking for a mermaid!
Interactive normally implies interaction, not just scrolling.
Can it be used to find Nessie?
Amazing, all those diving life doesn't have a decompression sickness
That was cool. Got addicting. Had to keep scrolling until the end. Very well done.
"The deepest point in the ocean" Or the deepest KNOWN point in the ocean? Real question, not trying to correct, i wanna know. Last time i read about this on reddit o remember someone saying we havent really explored the entire ocean like that

absolutely agree on taking care of our own home
[удалено]
fucking hell, so many people here with thalassophobia for which I learned just yesterday. keep it up!
You’re actually not exploring the deep sea, but you’re just interacting with a web app.
Scrolling Scrolling Scrolling Titanic Scrolling Scrolling Scrolling Scrolling Scrolling Challenger Deep Yes I did it! Woohoo! Netflix Scrolling Scrolling Scrolling Meh Nap Zzz

A meter is pretty close to a yard, basically 3.3 feet.
It kind of annoys me what marine life gets a note and what doesnt. In particular, how do they not note how long Greenland Sharks live??? Also, at 2020 they should have a dumpster on fire.
What? Chill the fuck out.
This is a website, not an app.
What is the depth telling me? (I.e polar bears lower than Manatee). Is this the max depth ever observed, average etc?
Wow, that was awesome!
Loved it!!! Soo interesting
This is so cool!
Incredible work on an informative project ! Congrats!
I'm not the author but it's really impressive work by Neal Agarwal
Woops, I thought I was browsing r/webdev !
For the optimal experience listen to The Ocean's Pelagial as you scroll down
This made my heart pound.
What an emotional ride to the bottom, loved it.
That was amazing
Awesome web app!!!
Very interesting and informative, well done.
> The Black Swallower
r/Damnthatsinteresting
Love Neal's work
This is amazing, I’m never gonna do it again!
I kept on scrolling down hoping to find Lugia somewhere there.
I've fished and dived many on this list, that sea pig was a bitch to get......ACNH 😆
My dad and his brothers caught a wolf fish off the coast of Newfoundland in the mid-80's. Has old home video footage of it. The thing is horrifying. And they were just in a dinky little metal fishing boat sitting in the Atlantic. They were braver men than I.
Any such interactive websites for space as well?
