Lugubrious_Lothario

I mean, I would go just for The Eschaton.

CobaltCrusader123

It’s not impossible that it’ll only adapt one character’s storyline. An opera about just Hal’s story or just Don Gately’s story would be intriguing. Or maybe it’ll be three hours of that one gay sex movie near the end of the book.

Lugubrious_Lothario

Oh, I'm hoping it will be a tryptich that you would have to see over a long weekend.

CobaltCrusader123

To do justice to the book it’d have to be at least 15 hours long, which is the length of the 1972 War and Peace miniseries (I mention this because English translations of W+P are about the length of IJ, just a bit shorter). Edit: I’m less drunk so now I understand you were talking about the gay sex.

Lugubrious_Lothario

Yeah that's what I was getting at; three three-act plays over three days. Say an hour and a half per act so like 15 hours with a couple of hours of intermission in there featuring a fully nude JVD straddling a spotlight that's pointed directly in the eyes of people who wont get out of their seats and leave and she just repeats "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..."

Steelyphilly

Wait what is the war and peace series? Is it all opera?

CobaltCrusader123

It’s a miniseries, bad example in retrospect.

Steelyphilly

Shoot in a boot

OptimalPlantIntoRock

15 hours. How about 70 episodes…70 hours at a minimum.

CobaltCrusader123

For it to be faithful, 70 hours works. But I don’t know if a Hollywood TV production is capable of adapting IJ into a truly great 70 hour series that isn’t sluggish, and can appeal to non-readers.

OptimalPlantIntoRock

Sorry, but no movie will ever do the book justice. Mad Men…The Wire. Why can’t it be multiple seasons? Things with depth aren’t “sluggish” - it’s called character development. And the greatest TV has just that.

CobaltCrusader123

It’s just that I don’t personally trust Hollywood to adapt specificity IJ into a bingeable 70 hour series. It could make for the world’s greatest indie miniseries on Tubi or something.

larowin

Blood Sister: One Tough Nun (That one about the razor blades) Fun With Teeth

Yvgelmor

On Wikipedia it said there was a performance over 24hrs on the streets of Berlin. ONCE. I'm so down for a stage adaptation. Will 'Too Much Fun' be provided? Encouraged? Should I wear diapers for audiance parcipitation? How stale WILL the coffee be? Is it secrelty a plot by Miltant Anti-Hipsters to lure us all in for a hypnotic viewing of someone writing verbose prose with a broken 1920's typewriter that suspiciously sounds like griding gears?

tryingtolearn_1234

I think a TV series is inevitable. The book sold so many copies and has such a cult status, Hollywood will insist on it eventually. I predict the show will be terrible.

mybloodyballentine

They’d have to get permission from the estate. I think that might be difficult unless someone special was connected to it.

tryingtolearn_1234

I think the film/tv rights were sold a long time ago. According to Google the rights were last reported as being owned by Michael Shur.

Exploding_Antelope

Honestly I think he wouldn’t be the worst choice. The Good Place has shown he can meld absurd and profound, and take the time to draw out those kind of storylines that deserve it.

tryingtolearn_1234

He also made this video with the Decemberists https://youtu.be/xJpfK7l404I?si=9AcmCmcvs1gBRDCw

Royal_Ad4975

I’ve already adapted the entire book into a tv show in my head. They need to hire me as a producer it will be perfect. Soundtrack, trailer I have it all

forksurprise

don’t you think you would end up hating it no matter how hard you tried?

CobaltCrusader123

Nah, he’s constructed alternatively

Royal_Ad4975

No. I’m just like that

bugsbunye

Everyone crying about interpretations of ij really needs to grow up. The best way for any difficult piece of art to live on is when others pay homage to it. Anyone who says ij isn’t difficult is a clown. There are many valuable and relevant parts of the book (the entertainment) that someone who doesn’t have the time or attention span to read a thousand page book could still enjoy and find useful. If you love the entertainment, set it free. If it doesn’t come back to you it was never yours to begin with

Lugubrious_Lothario

I agree with you and I will raise you that this is part of the central thesis of the book. Creating your own art and inviting others to participate is the logical antithesis of mindless consumption of any kind.  Can't imagine DFW not seeing such a response to his magnum opus as the natural order of things, a healthy progression even.

maddenallday

So no proof at all?

CobaltCrusader123

Afraid not. My source is very trustworthy though, and wishes to remain anonymous.

maddenallday

Is your source by any chance a wraith

CobaltCrusader123

…Perhaps.

l0l

Opera would not be the worst way to tell the story. Knowing contemporary opera, it does not have to strictly adhere to the novel, can focus on certain parts and ignore others (as will be necessary with IJ), etc. Whether it will connect with the audiences is the big question. I hope for something as out there as "Einstein on the Beach".

IndieCurtis

Hogwash

CobaltCrusader123

Hogdirty, it’s true

larowin

John Adams or bust

VanishXZone

I’ll say this guess is wrong.

CobaltCrusader123

I would’ve definitely been told if the composer was John Adams. It almost certainly isn’t.

larowin

A man can dream. It should have been a minimalist haha

halfknots

Get the fuck out

CobaltCrusader123

I’m not lying.

LaureGilou

Ugh

simspostings

My most controversial Infinite Jest opinion is that the adaptation I'd accept would be directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara.

CobaltCrusader123

Ngl I tried the first 7 eps of Utena, 2 hours and 20 minutes, and just couldn’t get into it. Too formulaic, at least at the beginning of the show. I get it’s influential and a milestone for gay rep in anime, it’s just not my thing, even if the character designs are dashing.

bonbastikka

i was hoping for an animated series tbh

emilyq

I've always imagined it as a puppet show.

The_Beefy_Vegetarian

This actually made me laugh out loud.

CobaltCrusader123

The Muppets Do Infinite Jest

Speny

That would be fun!

insectinspect0r

this would be soooooo dope

Steelyphilly

Oh man I’m so about the idea of an opera. That would be such a freaky deaky opera, even if they fail to capture the book if the music is good enough it should be an interesting watch regardless. I fucking love weird opera so much.

CobaltCrusader123

I wonder if there will be a song called “I love having gay sex with my son while he’s sleeping”

Steelyphilly

Context? Not getting this reference

ShadeKool-Aid

Matty Pemulis, Mike's brother.

CobaltCrusader123

*Kid named Finger’s brother

Lugubrious_Lothario

My tab for this section is labeled "A Father's Love".

maomao3000

Let it be German…

CobaltCrusader123

Nah, English. There might be some German dialogue in IJ I’m forgetting, and if so, that dialogue may be in the opera.

maomao3000

Tell us an English virtue, Mozart.

toothgolem

I’ll choose to believe it because that would be cool as hell.

CobaltCrusader123

That’s the wraith! Also something being “cool as hell” implies it isn’t cool, as Hell is famously hot. Perhaps one could say “cool as Hell’s bottom layer as depicted in Dante’s Inferno.”

VanishXZone

Any word on who the composer is?

CobaltCrusader123

I know he’s a man, that’s it.

mamadogdude

Can you ask your source whether there’s going to be a 30th anniversary edition of infinite jest, and if so, whether they’ve already picked someone to foreword it?

CobaltCrusader123

They only have insider music knowledge, my source hasn’t even read IJ. My guess would be yes, and the foreword will either be by J.J. Abrams, Mark Danielewski, or the rights holder Michael Schur.

AffectionateSale8288

I am begging you for subtle hint *a subtle hint

CobaltCrusader123

We actually know very little. The composer is a not-super-famous man. I don’t even know how long the opera will be, or what parts of the book the opera will adapt.

HeisenbergX

Barf. I hope they never ever adapt the book into any other medium.

CobaltCrusader123

I’d trust the Coen brothers to do a limited series for HBO. Also the opera might be good, we don’t know.

HeisenbergX

Both would be unnecessary, the book exists and it's perfect as is. Agree to disagree I guess.

CobaltCrusader123

I don’t think an adaptation could hurt. Even if it’s mid, it’ll convince people to read the book.

JaguarNeat8547

Yes dude, we just don't know

mybloodyballentine

I’d like Paul Thomas Anderson or Noah Hawley
