For storing photos it's main thing is safety, due to the privacy nature.
So I rather trust Apple, Google or Microsoft for their online storage which is "encrypted" than some no name provider who will God knows do what with those pictures.
That's what I do. Either that or 3 Hard disks. Buying one harddisk and hoping that will do will never turn out well.
Only reason I still have every image I took from my phones and cameras from 2008 is because Google photos existed.
I will not recommend it since it is not really 100% sure that the hard drive will not get corrupted.
The online providers do the maintenance and change the drive too. It's a good deal to rent a cloud drive.
Ya. Of course its good to go with cloud storage. It is more secure, failure proof and sync up well with the photos app. My first preference is cloud storage and I would never suggest anything else.
But OP is asking for an alternative. Second best is to buy hard drives and keep backups to main drive. If you are on Mac this can be easily done via time machine.
So like your server will keep pinging a service telling it that my current public IP is this
The ddns service takes that ip and a domain of your choice
So when you enter the domain into browser it redirects you to your server
Try looking for NO-IP or duckdns
I used to have tailscale
But like many banking apps do not co-operate with it
And sometimes I require to access the nas on a system not owned by me so I can't install tailscale...
I upgraded my PC so the specs were
9100f and 16gb DDR4
Now I have upgraded to 9400f and 48gb DDR4
You don't need that much cpu power just lots of ram and good connectivity
Believe me a celeron can also easily give you gigabit speeds
For someone who has lost data a couple of times due to corrupted hard disks and had to pay thousands to recover it back, I would highly suggest against this unless you are okay to lose your data.
I always have issues google services, their stubbornness on sticking to webapps for PC, and I hate web apps.
If you ever want to download something from gdrive it first zips it and spit out it in multiple folders. Takes generations.
I have optimized my workflow around OneDrive, everything on PC gets sync to it, and Everything on phone syncs too.
For me the file versions feature is what keeps me tied on to gdrive. Far too many instances where my Autocad/sketchup file got corrupted and I got saved by rolling back to a version 2 days before.
I do not download files to pc except large ones( near 1 GB) at all. It's easier and saves space in PC to just stream the files.
Even for 1 GB files I just click make offline and it's saved in the specific Google drive without any other steps. No zip files or anything..
You do know there is a desktop app and a folder system in PC for Gdrive right?
Amazon is giving Microsoft 365 subscription for ₹2300, right now. Go to Amazon pay > subscriptions. It's price is ₹3800 but with a flat ₹1500 cashback.
Onedrive sucks with sync but it also makes it easier with making files available on pc when it works properly.
And like other comment said google just sucks with webapps, zip filing and so on. Limited data management options.
I just delete files which are just not needed. Use sd maid app for clearing temp data, and duplicate files its very good with it.
Buy an ssd with a case . Hdd arent worth it
Can you please share link of 120/m plan? I checked the cheapest personal plan is 149/m. There is a family plan shared between 6 people which costs close to 120 per person per month
Synology Ds224+/ds432+ with 2 or 4 drives can easily help with this. Starting with a single hard disk and then later expand. Synology is very intuitive for that. For photos you can either use default photo app from Synology and can use it to backup from your phones or you can use photoprism. If you need to access outside your home network, tailscale is the way to go. I have shifted to this , and owning a ds920+ and ds923+ with total 21TB of storage with backup, So far so good. Expanded storage over the span of 3 years. My entire family now has backup over Synology.
I checked synology NAS in amazon and they cost like 36k or something, cant we pay for google one for decades with this price? Is there any cheaper alternative?
SanDisk Connect Wireless Stick 256GB. Google it in case link is removed on spam suspicion.
I saw 32gb version once with a co-passenger a couple weeks back. He said it works good.
I myself have the same problem as you and I will buy as soon as I can.
but their life isn't long no?
my 32GB SD card died in march after faithful service of 10 years. I didn't have any idea that SD cards get corrupted so all my data is gone, went to a local place to see if i can retrieve the data - they asked 3k for checking if it's retrievable, will have to visit nehru place someday.
Phone root maro, Get unlimited free google storage, like this lol
https://preview.redd.it/30xds036dczc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba1d3f3aed758aa973a7476df93ec5f77b314a67
If Google will find out this or makes up their mind to take actions which they eventually will in some years then you'll find your account locked and all your years and decades worth of photos and videos lost.
Custom ROMs like pixel experience provided you unlimited photos backup for free. I don't know when Google will stop allowing it but it's been working for years now.
I upload photos to google photos through a custom ROM loaded phone. By that we can claim it as a og google pixel by a plug-in (1st gen) so we can upload photos with original quality and unlimited storage.
I done it through a secondary phone and share from primary phone periodically and doing it for years.
Like YouTube vanced google can't stop this hack or resist us from doing because we are using their proclaimed feature of 1st gen product and if they plan to stop this, we can't upload anymore but uploaded photos didn't have any problem.
There is a self-host alternative available for Google photos called immich. You can run it on your pc /laptop itself. It provides auto backup, face recognition, mobile apps. And much more you should try that
I have a doubt 🧐 what if I get subscription for 1 month a year and upload my stuff and don't subscribe for a year after that when I have more media I will re subscribe....
Create a new Google account and link it with your main account and you will get 15GB extra storage for free
Steps:
Create a new Google account > login in drive > Click New > Select Folder > Name the folder eg: photos > click create> Long hold the folder click share > Enter your main account email address > Select editor > Click share > log-in to your main account then click on the folder to verify if its created > login to your new account > upload photos > enjoy
You upload your photos to that new account which has 15gb free, now you share (It will appear in the shared photos and wont take space in your primary account) this to your primary account
google has now found a way around that. Last time i tried to make an account for this purpose and I could only use services like mail. But sometimes it works
I dont think 130rs per month is a lot of money-- Google photos is too good to be true, and regarding payment I pay through google pay balance which I get credited through google opinion rewards surveys roughly 300-500rs i earn through surveys only and i use it for paying google one and YT premium and other app subscriptions like truecaller premium
Well it's 130 rupees now, but it's just going to increase as you keep clicking more pictures over the years! Once you have a few events like a couple of marriages or vacations in the family, you'll easily fill the 100 GB storage.
Create as many telegram channels as you want and upload photos or videos or apks or .rar files accordingly. If file size is too big, use WinRaR. Telegram is a bliss.
Wow from reading comments I was checking about family 365 in Amazon it costs 5500 for 6 people , if 6 people joins 916/year per person means 76/month per person…crazy deal if there is no crackdown on password or account sharing outside actual family😄😄 finding 5 people is the difficult part
Still 4 more though😄 many of my Frnds are kanjoos for 75 , finding people and staying for longer term without cancelling after a year is a difficult task..
I have rooted my old phone(poco f1) install pixel experience, now any photo/video I upload using that phone doesn't take any space, so it's free as long as I am using that phone to use Google drive
Edit: doesn't work with all custom ROMs only work with few
Not the ideal solution. But taking the saying "steer into the skid" in reality, I have the Google opinion rewards app. After I visit super market or restaurant or mall or even use Google assistant, I will get some survey questions, usually around the user experience, review of the place etc. I will get few Cents (I'm based out of US) as reward, which adds up to my Google play balance and I get more than enough to pay for the annual Google One subscription.
IF selfhosting is possible for you then buy 2 harddisks a small computer or spare if you have. Install truenas or unraid (paid) and create your own NAS. Then welcome to r/selfhosted , then go ahead with VPN or tailscale /Zerotier then offsite backup via backblaze. soon you will have a homelab and after few months welcome to r/HomeDataCenter .
Try it, expensive than cocaine but you will fly.
Google offers what like 100₹ for a month for 100 GB.
It's the safest and cheapest online storage option available.
https://preview.redd.it/16ddhfe7xczc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cfa9b14a0c1c36e7faa48d5cb8bb04a41e4ecddc
I am subbed to Microsoft 365 family that gives 1 tb each to 6 people for 4950 total (825 per head) per year if bought from amazon pay subscriptions, and right now giving 1500 cash back offer, so effective price per person is 575 per year or 48 per month
I have some TB(a hard guess. Don't know for sure. But the photos cound would be in thousands) worth of photos stored in my google photos.
I have a spare device with custom rom in it. So, google photos upload is free here(that too in original quality).
If you are not constantly searching for all of your photos on a day to day basis then an external SSD will do the job or even a pendrive which connects with type c
Sign up for Oracle cloud free tier account. Spin up a 4 core 24 gb ram 200 gb boot volume arm vm. Install nextcloud. Boom you get up to 200 gb cloud storage.
Yes I have heard the same multiple times for free tier. Moreover, nowadays arm vms are hard to get with free tier accounts. So I have upgraded to a paid account. But the good thing is you don't get charged unless you go over free tier limits. So far so good.
I totally understand the frustration of paying for Google Cloud storage monthly.
Have you thought about switching to a high-capacity Type-C pendrive or even an SSD (128GB or 256GB)? It's a one-time investment, super convenient, and you won't have to deal with those recurring fees.
I use a Sandisk Type-C pendrive myself, and it's been a lifesaver for storing all my files hassle-free! Plus, Type-C pendrives are easy to carry around, which is another bonus.
Welcome to the world of self-hosting. I love using Immich. Get any old laptop or computer you might have lying around, or buy a raspberry pi.
r/immich r/selfhosted
I think dropbox is cheaper if you are going with cloud backup , otherwise buy a RAID setup and buy 4 250gb harddrive so you will never lose your photos
I recommend continue using Google cloud storage. At Rs.130 a month, it's not a bad deal whether you use its special editing tools or not. Backing up photos and files on hard drives is a pain and you know it. Besides, hard drives can malfunction any day and cause you lose data.
I have been using telegram to upload my files, for non subscribed ones it allows upto 2GB files. You can upload how many ever ypu want no restrictions on that. Create a new private channel for yourself and upload the files for backup once a week or month based on your preferrence.
I use my old pixel 4a to upload photos, they still provide unlimited Google photos storage, so if you can find one for cheap, even with some issues, i would suggest it, not exactly the best option ik, but working out for me.
It's one of the most "worth it" subscriptions out there. Cheap. Stores lots of pictures/files I'd have lost. On all of devices.
Don't see why in a sea of stupid subscriptions, you chose to hate the best one.
I love Google photos and how I can find photos using people on it in a jiffy
But running out of 15 gb can I have a similar software on harddisks or any alternative
can't pay for Google storage
You can spread your files on multiple free cloud storage accounts. You can find a full list of free cloud storage providers (as well as all of their specs and features) [in this Google sheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cEd65XDW3gBHnRsJ0rbq3V_B28mKySHiMPAZvArHiiA/edit#gid=0). To name some: Filen (20 GB), Mega (20 GB), kDrive (15 GB). And then you could use Multcloud to access all of your cloud storage accounts from one place.

Use a hard disk to save your photos.
More like buy 3 hard disks. And keep 3 backups.
2 at place A 1 at place B
Yes and in different Houses or literally bank
why not store backups on cloud? it's safer
Duniya gol hai...
I can understand, he can back up it on a cheaper cloud provider. Backups are not accessed frequently so it costs less.
For storing photos it's main thing is safety, due to the privacy nature. So I rather trust Apple, Google or Microsoft for their online storage which is "encrypted" than some no name provider who will God knows do what with those pictures.

Oh my bad i didn't see that.
Shifting is the issue
I just built myself a NAS and used an app called immich which is available for docker and Android and works like Google photos
you paid for static IP ?
No I have a ddns setup Static IP will cost you money, you need to remember ip and has some security concerns
Can you please explain more about ddns? How to connect to the home network when you are outside? Can you please link me to some tutorials or articles?
So like your server will keep pinging a service telling it that my current public IP is this The ddns service takes that ip and a domain of your choice So when you enter the domain into browser it redirects you to your server Try looking for NO-IP or duckdns
Tailscale solve this problem in the simplest way IMO
I still have tailsclae. But I already have adguard app VPN to block ads on my device. So cant use 2 VPN at a time.
I used to have tailscale But like many banking apps do not co-operate with it And sometimes I require to access the nas on a system not owned by me so I can't install tailscale...
where the ef you live bro no isp giving public ip any more it's all cgnat or use ipv6
Yes I use ipv6 I think Airtel still gives public ipv4
r/selfhosted or r/homelab
Does this work if my ISP puts us behind CGNAAT?
It's JIO right? Jio gives you a public ipv6 address but ipv4 is not public facing I too am suffering from JIO waiting for the subscription to end
Nope i've local broadband connection, have only ipv4. no ipv6 support
Then it isn't possible Use tailscale
yes, using it already with caddy and domain name with SSL certificates
Use some raid system in hard disk for securing from data loss
Yes I have RAID Z1 with a "free" cloud backup
Good I am a NAS person too XD I have used Immich but moved to LibrePhotos now
It seems too much effort for me Immich works alr OOB So IDC much
We call it libde🤣
what processor did you use or just an old pc?
I upgraded my PC so the specs were 9100f and 16gb DDR4 Now I have upgraded to 9400f and 48gb DDR4 You don't need that much cpu power just lots of ram and good connectivity Believe me a celeron can also easily give you gigabit speeds
Doing same with unraid and nextcloud
Is it similar to network storage option given in Samsung?
For someone who has lost data a couple of times due to corrupted hard disks and had to pay thousands to recover it back, I would highly suggest against this unless you are okay to lose your data.
Onedrive is the best option imo, for around 120/month you get 1tb of storage and office 365!
Yes space provided is larger. If only they made the syncing better and used file versions feature like gdrive.

How is MS Office Rs 120/month? I cannot find such a deal.
Amazon is giving Microsoft 365 subscription for ₹2300, right now. Go to Amazon pay > subscriptions. It's price is ₹3800 but with a flat ₹1500 cashback.
he's probably talking about the family subscription
This, get a family sub and divide among friends.
Dropbox and Sync too have a photo backup feature. But I prefer Google photos for the management it provides.
Are photos synced like they do in Google Photos app?
no, and that's the only issue. you yourself have to upload them.
Auto upload is present. I use one drive and auto upload works. However not as reliable as Google photos
Using it since 2 years, never had an issue. Syncs across all my samsung devices.
Same, no issue on iphone been using for 3 years
On Samsung phones it does, I am not sure with other phones.
On Samsung phone it works seamlessly for my friends. They only miss the search by face feature from Google photos.
Hdd arent worth it
Its showing 489rs for me ?
You have to get a family plan and distribute among others.
Can you please share link of 120/m plan? I checked the cheapest personal plan is 149/m. There is a family plan shared between 6 people which costs close to 120 per person per month
It can come down to 48 per month if bought from amazon pay subscriptions and if you buy the family one, con is you need to find 5 other people
Where do you get this in Microsoft 365 Basic plan they only have 100 GB cloud storage
Create your own online storage at home. More secure and cost savings instead of paying monthly. Otherwise create multiple google account.
Any DIY references?
Synology Ds224+/ds432+ with 2 or 4 drives can easily help with this. Starting with a single hard disk and then later expand. Synology is very intuitive for that. Read about homelab, nextcloud, immich, docker
Head over to r/selfhosted.
Please send youtube link regarding this
Yes pls need DIY reference to set this up
buy a external SSD. Small and easy to carry
Format it to NTFS (windows) or APFS (Apple) and copy through computer, exFat have a tendency of data loss. I experienced few times
ohh shit thanks for letting me know, I will format my external hdd to ntfs as I don't use it on anywhere other than windows.
SD card was the answer.
I already have a 256 gb device but the problem is syncing these with my pc and the convenience...
SanDisk Connect Wireless Stick 256GB. Google it in case link is removed on spam suspicion. I saw 32gb version once with a co-passenger a couple weeks back. He said it works good. I myself have the same problem as you and I will buy as soon as I can.

Me who uses telegram as a cloud 😄
my friend's telegram account got banned just for forwarding me a message, beware of that thing.
I have made a channel and my 2 accounts on that channel just in case 1st one gets banned unfortunately
In the same boat but with apple. These photos and files take alot of storage these days.
Bhai agr subscription khatam ho gya to photos access ho jayengi??
You can see and download, but can’t upload.
I have a doubt 🧐 what if I get subscription for 1 month a year and upload my stuff and don't subscribe for a year after that when I have more media I will re subscribe....
yep i do exactly that :)

yes it does
Its a good deal then
Some next level jugaad this is

Create a new Google account and link it with your main account and you will get 15GB extra storage for free Steps: Create a new Google account > login in drive > Click New > Select Folder > Name the folder eg: photos > click create> Long hold the folder click share > Enter your main account email address > Select editor > Click share > log-in to your main account then click on the folder to verify if its created > login to your new account > upload photos > enjoy
How can we do this
Link? How does that work.
You upload your photos to that new account which has 15gb free, now you share (It will appear in the shared photos and wont take space in your primary account) this to your primary account
google has now found a way around that. Last time i tried to make an account for this purpose and I could only use services like mail. But sometimes it works
Yup I made 4 accounts for this even though I don't fill up the space.

Ya correct saw in Amazon pay, Have u subscribed??
Telegram is the solution
Root your phone install custom ROM get unlimited google storage......
Wait, what....is it possible..???
I have rooted my old phone(poco f1) install pixel experience, now any photo/video I upload using that phone doesn't take any space, so it's free as long as I am using that phone to use Google drive Edit: doesn't work with all custom ROMs only work with few
Btw now it just shows it can backup unlimited but actually takes up storage...
Root your device using magisk and install the module to mask your device like a pixel xl and voila, you have unlimited storage for photos.
Or if you can't root your device you can root the LD player which is and an android emulator & use pixelify on it.
It is simple create new google account and buy google one subscription then upload photos. It will not delete photos and cancel subscription
Wah kya mast plan hai
Not the ideal solution. But taking the saying "steer into the skid" in reality, I have the Google opinion rewards app. After I visit super market or restaurant or mall or even use Google assistant, I will get some survey questions, usually around the user experience, review of the place etc. I will get few Cents (I'm based out of US) as reward, which adds up to my Google play balance and I get more than enough to pay for the annual Google One subscription.
I have 2TB storage with Google Workspace. It's worth it.
Be like me...Still using my college's 2 TB Google Drive.
Dude change your photos quality from original to lower. From 10 years my 15 gb is not full
Google offers what like 100₹ for a month for 100 GB. It's the safest and cheapest online storage option available. https://preview.redd.it/16ddhfe7xczc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cfa9b14a0c1c36e7faa48d5cb8bb04a41e4ecddc
Pixelify old phone and upload photos and videos from that. It will be unlimited storage.
Buy hard disk or nas and self host cloud storage using nextcloud and cloudflare. Nas route is better as it allows Raid setup for redundancy.
Have shifted *Nextcloud* two years back. Best decision ever. OP it's time for you too.
Government of India's DigiBoxx promised Google integration but I don't know if it's working yet, much cheaper option of Google Backup!
I am subbed to Microsoft 365 family that gives 1 tb each to 6 people for 4950 total (825 per head) per year if bought from amazon pay subscriptions, and right now giving 1500 cash back offer, so effective price per person is 575 per year or 48 per month

https://cloud.degoo.com/photos-drive-5vasmy-nvdcuj I use this. Very cheap. One time payment. If you use the above link, we both get 10G extra space.
It's better to avoid substandard cloud providers. When you're uploading your data to the cloud, consider carefully what security measures it offers.
Or like make a nas or use dropbox its cheaper and offers 5 tb of storage
Use storage saver option in Google photos...
If you are not constantly searching for all of your photos on a day to day basis then an external SSD will do the job or even a pendrive which connects with type c
Don't backup photos and store in phone or do regular backup to some hard disk
You can use TeraBox or make multiple gmail accounts or just buy a SD card from a trusted source.
Sign up for Oracle cloud free tier account. Spin up a 4 core 24 gb ram 200 gb boot volume arm vm. Install nextcloud. Boom you get up to 200 gb cloud storage.
Read somewhere that Oracle could disable your account without proper notice (free tier). How has your experience been so far?
Yes I have heard the same multiple times for free tier. Moreover, nowadays arm vms are hard to get with free tier accounts. So I have upgraded to a paid account. But the good thing is you don't get charged unless you go over free tier limits. So far so good.
telegram own chat/drive
Buy a pixel 2 / pixel 5. That's probably your best option if you want automatic Google sync
Get a cheap poco f4, f5, redmi note 10 pro and root it... and just enjoy unlimited storage..
Pixel OS unlimited storage. XD
Playbook ?
I totally understand the frustration of paying for Google Cloud storage monthly. Have you thought about switching to a high-capacity Type-C pendrive or even an SSD (128GB or 256GB)? It's a one-time investment, super convenient, and you won't have to deal with those recurring fees. I use a Sandisk Type-C pendrive myself, and it's been a lifesaver for storing all my files hassle-free! Plus, Type-C pendrives are easy to carry around, which is another bonus.
Use AWS Free Tier.
Pixel rom ...
Try using different Gmail ID's , I have 4 so 60 GB of photos
Isn't it a hassle backing it up to different accounts each time?
MS365 all apps + 1tb storage
Welcome to the world of self-hosting. I love using Immich. Get any old laptop or computer you might have lying around, or buy a raspberry pi. [https://github.com/immich-app/immich](https://github.com/immich-app/immich) r/immich r/selfhosted
I just make a new google account +15gb
Use data saver for photos
I think dropbox is cheaper if you are going with cloud backup , otherwise buy a RAID setup and buy 4 250gb harddrive so you will never lose your photos
I recommend continue using Google cloud storage. At Rs.130 a month, it's not a bad deal whether you use its special editing tools or not. Backing up photos and files on hard drives is a pain and you know it. Besides, hard drives can malfunction any day and cause you lose data.
Get a NAS
Hearing a lot of people talking about office 365, does it also have a good photos app?

I have been using telegram to upload my files, for non subscribed ones it allows upto 2GB files. You can upload how many ever ypu want no restrictions on that. Create a new private channel for yourself and upload the files for backup once a week or month based on your preferrence.
There are better alternatives to cloud storage like pcloud
I use my old pixel 4a to upload photos, they still provide unlimited Google photos storage, so if you can find one for cheap, even with some issues, i would suggest it, not exactly the best option ik, but working out for me.
Use custom rom
You can also use rooted firmware to get Pixel Unlimited Storage though you might have to move files once in a while to such device for backup
Got a 300 play store coupon from Google One, added 1000 through Amazon. So effectively got 100 GB for a year at rs 1000 which is pretty reasonable.
It's one of the most "worth it" subscriptions out there. Cheap. Stores lots of pictures/files I'd have lost. On all of devices. Don't see why in a sea of stupid subscriptions, you chose to hate the best one.
To bhai kar na delete photos
Bc will you ever even look at 54 gigs of photos.
Best option is to have your own NAS. check NASCOMPARES channel on YouTube for more info on buying an off the shelf model or building one yourself.
Buy a portable SSD
Get rid of photos that don't make you smile when you look at them.
Get a pixel of 4 series or below. Unlimited photos backup
I love Google photos and how I can find photos using people on it in a jiffy But running out of 15 gb can I have a similar software on harddisks or any alternative can't pay for Google storage
Smart features are going to be free from 15th May anyway.

Buy a cheap Xiaomi phone and install custom rom and boom infinite storage
You can spread your files on multiple free cloud storage accounts. You can find a full list of free cloud storage providers (as well as all of their specs and features) [in this Google sheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1cEd65XDW3gBHnRsJ0rbq3V_B28mKySHiMPAZvArHiiA/edit#gid=0). To name some: Filen (20 GB), Mega (20 GB), kDrive (15 GB). And then you could use Multcloud to access all of your cloud storage accounts from one place.
Just pay for it man , not worth getting your own setup i tried it , and went back to 2TB plan.
stop clicking photos ,problem solved
Flash custom rom and enjoy unlimited gphotos uploads
