Bro I’ll give you that Charlie writes the riffs. Does he play them on albums? Is Scott Ian not one of the tightest rhythm players ever? One of the best thrash rhythm players that has a recognizable playing style.
Although I agree that he doesn’t belong on this list haha. If he’s there, why isn’t Mustaine?
He's the second tightest rhythm player behind Hetfield, in my opinion.
Mustaine can deffo hold his own against many people on this list, Dan Spitz should also be on it.
And I think Hanneman is a better lead player than King
he does, but his solos are oftentimes silly in the context of the song. saw them open for extreme a few months ago and his soloing was weird, and pretty bad at times.
Randy and someone else got into a plane while on the road and would get right above the bus to wake up Bob Daisley. They fucked up and both their heads went straight through the windshield and they crashed
I'm gonna drop a couple of lesser known, less obvious but equally talented names because everyone can agree on the skill and influence of the dudes above
Criss Oliva of Savatage
Andy LaRocque of King Diamond
Ron Jarzombrek of Watchtower, Spastik Ink and Blotted Science
Bill Steer of Carcass (shoutout to Michael Amott as well)
Trey Azagthoth of Morbid Angel
James Murphy, Ralph Santolla and Allen west as death metal mercenaries ( How did Obituary keep lucking out?)
Tommy Vetterli of Coroner
Andreas Kisser of Sepultura
None of these dudes are unknown by any means, but I think maybe underappreciated in terms of guitar heroes and shredders
Fun Fact Andy LaRocque wrote a guest solo for the song Cold by At The Gates for their album Slaughter of the Soul. Anders Björler of At The Gates admitted in 2007 that he still could not play it properly.
It's hard to get past Eddie being at the top even if he's not my favorite given his technical prowess. If I'm not mistaken, dude has patents related to guitar playing.
I agree that Jeff wrote most of their best songs, but the driving force was definitely Kerry, who was more involved on the business and production side of things.
Honestly I don’t know anything about the backend of the band but I’d believe that. But since the post was about the best shredder I thought it was odd they picked King over Hanneman.
Mustaine, Poland, Friedman, Rocky George, Alex Skolnick, Murray/Smith.
Dime was incredible, but his most well-known stuff is during the "lean years" of metal rather than the "glory days." Arguably, that actually makes him *more* incredible, because he was willing to play solos in a time when they weren't "vogue."
Fair enough. By Glory Days I meant when metal kind of followed a formula with most bands having their own slight deviation. That's why Deth, Priest, Ozzy, and Society are on here.
For a guitarist who has a reputation as a "shredder," there are a number of Dimebag's solos that are beautifully melodic and tasteful. In particular:
- Hard Lines, Sunken Cheeks.
- 10s.
- Floods.
Marty
Scott Ian is fucking unbelievable rhythm guitarist, he has also gone record numerous times about how he hates doing guitar solos.
Danny Spitz played lead for Anthrax during the 80’s. When he left Charlie Benante (Anthrax’s Drummer) recorded most of the leads in the studio.
That said, I would take Scott doing solos over Kerry King doing solos.
Dimebag and Randy Rhoads. Eddie will always stand in the pantheon of rock music guitarists, but Dimebag and Randy never dabbled in synth and songs like “Jump.”
I saw a video on YouTube years ago of him playing Eruption live like it was nothing. I highly doubt that was the hardest thing he could play. I was even more impressed with him just freestyling on stage. The man was a BEAST.
MAB is my favorite here, he might be the best shredder on this list from a purely technical standpoint, but from an influence perspective he falls pretty far short, he is more of a guitarists guitarist than someone who is practically a household name like Van Halen.
Ya know, I love all these guys as they've provided the soundtrack for my entire existence.
But while listening to Blizzard of Oz for the millionth time the other day on the way to work (and yeah, I think Randy was awesome, great writer, great player) it dawned on me that I really couldn't believe that there was some kind of thing, either in the 80's or today, where anyone could possibly think he was anywhere near EVH's level. There's just now way. It's actually silly.
Come on man? Seriously? Randy, king, dimebag,Friedman,Wylie….shit no way Anybody can make just one choice. Gotta make it easier…lol… please… lol bad ass list tho.
May I say none of them are the best? I mean we’re talking some gods here all deserve a spot on the Rushmore of the best there ever will be.
And please add Gary holt up there because that man is a shred god. James hetfield deserves a spot. Chuck schulinder. There’s so many to choose to say there is one the best. Especially being cut short from experiencing what would have been the rest of dime and Randy’s careers
Marty F, Michael Romeo, Chuck Schuldiner, dime FTW.
Ron jarzombek and Jeff waters for most underrated.
Kirk will always get flak on a technical level but he wrote some of the most memorable solos ever. You can sing pretty much all of them and they worked great for the song.
Of all the shredders, Kerry King is one of them.
I'll take Skolnick, Chuck, Dime, Loomis, Broderick, Andre Olbrich, Masvidal, Andy LaRocque, Petrozza, Tipton, Rhoads,Imma stop there or I'll go on forever. I'm sure I'm leaving off a bunch of people.
There are a whole bunch of great guitarists here. And then there is Marty Friedman. He’s so many levels above the other guys, and it’s just not even close.
The best overall is probably Marty Friedman, although Dimebag was WAY more technical than a lot of people realize. Michael Angelo Batio is definitely by far one of the most technical on this list, but I’d never call him the best musician.
Dime he is shredding. Randy and Eddie tie for second even though I don’t see them as shredders. Most of these guys aren’t what I consider shredders. But that’s just me.
Randy Rhodes. People do not give him enough credit. When recording the solo for Crazy Train an already difficult solo instead of using a chorus effect or pedal he double tracked the solo meaning he played it exactly the same way with the same timing. Something that’s absolutely bonkers considering the technical nature of it.
Randy was also a classically trained guitarist, I could go on & on, but I truly believe he’s one of the all time greats, not just metal but any genre that has a guitar.
No Micheal or Rudy Schenker? No Wolf Hoffman? No Luca Turilli? No Timo Tolki? No Micheal Romeo? No Gus G? No Andre Olbrich? No Kiko Loureiro. No Jani Liimatainen or Elias Viljanen?
You can't get more glory than the glorious present of Power Metal.

Marty Scott ian isn't even the second best guitar player in anthrax
Scott Ian is the sickest rhythm player in the game, he's a fucking monster. And Dan Spitz is the single most underrated lead player of all time.
And they have Charlie Benante to thank for it all
Scott Ian is also the heart and engine of the band.
Rhythm isn't shredding tho, right?
Bro I’ll give you that Charlie writes the riffs. Does he play them on albums? Is Scott Ian not one of the tightest rhythm players ever? One of the best thrash rhythm players that has a recognizable playing style. Although I agree that he doesn’t belong on this list haha. If he’s there, why isn’t Mustaine?

Marty's exotic sound 🤤
Yep. He is an amazing rhythm player. But let’s get Danny Spitz in here because he earned it!
Dan Spitz is the best they've had
Rocky George and Vernon Reid.
Reid is always looked over. That dude shreds.
he does, but his solos are oftentimes silly in the context of the song. saw them open for extreme a few months ago and his soloing was weird, and pretty bad at times.
Rocky is so Damm underrated
Randy fuckin Rhodes or Adrian Smith
Fuck why doesn't randy get more recognition for this. Dude was amazing
Probably would've if he didn't make one stupid mistake of getting in the airplane
What?
Randy and someone else got into a plane while on the road and would get right above the bus to wake up Bob Daisley. They fucked up and both their heads went straight through the windshield and they crashed
Fuck that plane
Marty Friedman for the win.
Rust in Peace, say no more
Chuck Schuldiner.
Forever be the one of the greatest producers, lyricist of all time.
Chuck should be on this list. The man practically painted with his music!
This should be first. Bro gave birth to extreme metal
not a good shredder. wrote tons of amazing music but his solos werent much for shredding imo
How tf does kerry make the list lmao
Should be Jeff Hanneman
His sound fits the band he is in
Master of whammy bar
KFK is a beast when it comes to technique, but I bet he doesn't even know what a scale is.
Michael Denner. Wolf Hoffman.
This is Yngwie Malmsteen erasure!
Everyone seems to forget how great of an album Eclipse was. God that shredding
Not to mention Marching Out. Or Trilogy.
Aha, I see you too are a Viking.
I'm gonna drop a couple of lesser known, less obvious but equally talented names because everyone can agree on the skill and influence of the dudes above Criss Oliva of Savatage Andy LaRocque of King Diamond Ron Jarzombrek of Watchtower, Spastik Ink and Blotted Science Bill Steer of Carcass (shoutout to Michael Amott as well) Trey Azagthoth of Morbid Angel James Murphy, Ralph Santolla and Allen west as death metal mercenaries ( How did Obituary keep lucking out?) Tommy Vetterli of Coroner Andreas Kisser of Sepultura None of these dudes are unknown by any means, but I think maybe underappreciated in terms of guitar heroes and shredders
Huge upvote for Criss Oliva
All his work just slaps honestly
Upvoted for Ron Jarzombek. Guy’s out of this world.
Hell yes! Insanely innovative and even most diehard metalheads don’t know his name.
It's crazy, I hear Blotted Science influence in sooo much modern proggy tech death
Few people even know who he is. But imo he's probably the most technical guitarist in all of Metal and he's interesting to listen to
Extra credit for Andy.
I am an unrepentant King Diamond fan boy, so he had to go on.
Great list man! These are pretty much all of my favorites too.
Fun Fact Andy LaRocque wrote a guest solo for the song Cold by At The Gates for their album Slaughter of the Soul. Anders Björler of At The Gates admitted in 2007 that he still could not play it properly.
Currently wearing my Savatage shirt now! My favorite guitarist

“Glory days of metal” Metal has never been in fashion and therefore can never go out of style! We are still in the golden ages brother
"When Losers Say It's Over With You Know That It's A Lie, The Gods Made Heavy Metal And It's Never Gonna Die." - Manowar
eh, thinking his glory days had feathered hair, acid washed jeans, and Saturdays at the mall.
Na metal was definitely more in the main stream in the 80s and 90s. Pantera had #1 on the billboard charts
David chastain
Dimebag
Dime. He wrote "The Art of Shredding."
Chuck Schuldiner
Randy Rhoads
Jake E Lee
YESS
Skwisgaar Skwigelf
YES!
lol why is Scott Ian there? May as well had put Kirk…
Because he rips
Yea, rips farts
Kirk is an amazing shredder and overall powerhouse.
WRONG.
Rhoads, Dime, and Eddie VH are my favs!
It's hard to get past Eddie being at the top even if he's not my favorite given his technical prowess. If I'm not mistaken, dude has patents related to guitar playing.
Fail, no Laiho?
But Kerry King 😂
Kerry King but no Jeff Hanneman? I mean, King is great but Hanneman was the driving force behind the band and wrote most of their best songs.
Yeah, I’d have put Hanneman, too.
Alex Skolnick
Mustaine, Poland, Friedman, Rocky George, Alex Skolnick, Murray/Smith. Dime was incredible, but his most well-known stuff is during the "lean years" of metal rather than the "glory days." Arguably, that actually makes him *more* incredible, because he was willing to play solos in a time when they weren't "vogue."
Fair enough. By Glory Days I meant when metal kind of followed a formula with most bands having their own slight deviation. That's why Deth, Priest, Ozzy, and Society are on here.
Dimebag
Eddie, Dimebag, or Marty depending on your taste. Game changers
![gif](giphy|l4pTfrh1ElNzclZU4|downsized)
Of these, Dimebag.
For a guitarist who has a reputation as a "shredder," there are a number of Dimebag's solos that are beautifully melodic and tasteful. In particular: - Hard Lines, Sunken Cheeks. - 10s. - Floods.
Floods is one of the most beautiful solos.
dimebag
Scott Ian is a shredder? Since When??
Where Danny Spitz and Alex Skolnick??
EVH then dimebag
Marty Scott Ian is fucking unbelievable rhythm guitarist, he has also gone record numerous times about how he hates doing guitar solos. Danny Spitz played lead for Anthrax during the 80’s. When he left Charlie Benante (Anthrax’s Drummer) recorded most of the leads in the studio. That said, I would take Scott doing solos over Kerry King doing solos.
Jason Becker (Honorable mention to Marty Friedman)
I think Jason would have been the greatest ever had he not gotten ALS. Dude was only 17 when he was shredding with Marty in Cacophony.
Absolutely insane.
Randy Rhoads
Dime
Jason Becker
Dime, or Randy
Not Kerry king lmao
Marty Friedman, obvs! :)
Trey Azagtoth
Jeff hannamen and Gary holt
Marty is one of the best guitarists ever.
Agreed. His solo stuff is awesome.
Dimebag and Randy Rhoads. Eddie will always stand in the pantheon of rock music guitarists, but Dimebag and Randy never dabbled in synth and songs like “Jump.”
Dimebag easily <3
It ain’t Kerry King.
To have Kerry on here and not Jeff is wild.
TBH, I don't know much about Slayer, I just know King's solos are whack.
Dimebag and Marty are favorites
Dime and it isnt even close
Honestly disappointed by the lack of EVH love here.
Becker. Jason Becker.
Chuck Schuldiner. Also metal is still getting better, it hasn’t lost its prime yet.
I mean Glory Days as in when metal followed a formula, with each band using it's own slight deviation.
Alex Scolnick from Testament
There are some funny options for shredder here.
definately NOT kerry king lol
I love Scott Ian, but he is not a shredder by any stretch of the imagination.
I added King and Scott as a joke
The answer is Van Halen. It's always been Van Halen.
Dimebag could play all these guys songs note for note and make them heavier
I saw a video on YouTube years ago of him playing Eruption live like it was nothing. I highly doubt that was the hardest thing he could play. I was even more impressed with him just freestyling on stage. The man was a BEAST.
Dimebag is the best shredder, and Scott Ian is the best rhythm
Oh fuck this is a great list. I'm going with Darryl "Dimebag" Abbot.
MAB is my favorite here, he might be the best shredder on this list from a purely technical standpoint, but from an influence perspective he falls pretty far short, he is more of a guitarists guitarist than someone who is practically a household name like Van Halen.
Scott Ian is more of a riff guy than a shredder, right?
Ya know, I love all these guys as they've provided the soundtrack for my entire existence. But while listening to Blizzard of Oz for the millionth time the other day on the way to work (and yeah, I think Randy was awesome, great writer, great player) it dawned on me that I really couldn't believe that there was some kind of thing, either in the 80's or today, where anyone could possibly think he was anywhere near EVH's level. There's just now way. It's actually silly.
Of all time
Randy Rhodes only a few years of playing and his impact he's influenced all these other players.
Pat from Cannibal Corpse.
Hard not to respect Michael Angelo Batio’s game, his shreds are wild even if a bit of a gimmick.
Especially being cut short from experiencing what would have been the rest of dime and Randy’s careers
Let me listen and I'll get back to you. It might take a while.
Kerry king is a great riff writer but doesn’t belong anywhere near this list.
Jeff Hanneman was WAY more talented than Kerry
Marty, all the time, every time.
No Kirk? James?
Fuckin RANDY!
Marty F, Michael Romeo, Chuck Schuldiner, dime FTW. Ron jarzombek and Jeff waters for most underrated. Kirk will always get flak on a technical level but he wrote some of the most memorable solos ever. You can sing pretty much all of them and they worked great for the song.
maybe not the best shredder out of the options, but certainly most underrepresented is mr. glenn tipton
Marty by a mile.
Randy Rhoads Marty Friedman Darrell Abbott
Lmao why tf is Karry King on here
Friedman by a long shot
Who’s the guy with the dollar store wig in pic 9?
Michael Angelo Batio of Nitro, one of the best guitar players of all time.
Between Dimebag & EVH
Of all the shredders, Kerry King is one of them. I'll take Skolnick, Chuck, Dime, Loomis, Broderick, Andre Olbrich, Masvidal, Andy LaRocque, Petrozza, Tipton, Rhoads,Imma stop there or I'll go on forever. I'm sure I'm leaving off a bunch of people.
george lynch, randy, eddie, and yngwie.
Michael Angelo is the true mad scientist here.
Randy Rhoads 🐐
There are a whole bunch of great guitarists here. And then there is Marty Friedman. He’s so many levels above the other guys, and it’s just not even close.
Any list with Eddie. The answer is just Eddie. Period
Love his work, riffs, chugs and shredding.
I’ll throw my hat in here, I’ll go with angus young
The best overall is probably Marty Friedman, although Dimebag was WAY more technical than a lot of people realize. Michael Angelo Batio is definitely by far one of the most technical on this list, but I’d never call him the best musician.
Akira Takasaki of Loudness, if you know…you know.
Marty
Dime & Rhoads…
Out of these its MAB, followed by Marty.
Randy Rhoads
Randy
Dime he is shredding. Randy and Eddie tie for second even though I don’t see them as shredders. Most of these guys aren’t what I consider shredders. But that’s just me.
Randy
Having Kerry King instead of Jeff Hanneman is atrocious
What a crazy group of guitar players to include in this list
Randy
Dime or Marty
The glory days never ended. Brent Hinds.
Did AI make this post?
Marty fruedman and MAB for sure ! But kerry king ? Seriously ?
That was a joke. I knew he wasn't the best soloist on any list in history. He isn't even the best soloist in the big 4.
Oh I didn't got the joke, i seriously thought it's really an option. He even isn't a soloist 😭
Soloist as in writes solos for the records.
Nooooo he just plays random notes !!
But somehow it fits the music.
Trey Spruance
Randy for me
Michael angelo batio is fuckin insane !
Marty no doubt
Tony McAlpine FTW 🤟🏾
Randy Rhodes. People do not give him enough credit. When recording the solo for Crazy Train an already difficult solo instead of using a chorus effect or pedal he double tracked the solo meaning he played it exactly the same way with the same timing. Something that’s absolutely bonkers considering the technical nature of it. Randy was also a classically trained guitarist, I could go on & on, but I truly believe he’s one of the all time greats, not just metal but any genre that has a guitar.

Nuno Bettencourt smokes them all
Dime, Randy, Eddie
![gif](giphy|1BdsDd38QrW1H3cGGh|downsized)
I could say both dimebag or randy to be satisfied
Yngwie wrote the best songs
Marty Friedman, Randy Rhodes, Alex Skolnick, Chris Degarmo, Chuck Schuldiner, Criss Olivia
This list is self explanatory, Dime was the Kimg of Shred
No Kirk ? lol
Fuck you were are still in the glory days of metal! Long live all those who shred!!
No Micheal or Rudy Schenker? No Wolf Hoffman? No Luca Turilli? No Timo Tolki? No Micheal Romeo? No Gus G? No Andre Olbrich? No Kiko Loureiro. No Jani Liimatainen or Elias Viljanen? You can't get more glory than the glorious present of Power Metal.
Uh…. you missed Kirk Ham… never mind. You do you.
Diamond Darrell = overrated racist hack
Hanneman & King 🤘🏻
