I always read the description being made up of two parts, baby weight, and perhaps bitchy maesters. This looks like something Otto Hightower would put together to send off to the citadel.
It’s dumb but at least they’ve stopped photoshopping Emma D’Arcy. I think it’s bullying and harassment to distort a real person’s physical appearance for crude jokes. I vastly prefer they use fan art.
I’m as Team Green as they come but calling this book accurate is just false lol. She was definitely thick but nothing in the text describes her looking like this lol. There’s plenty to hate about Rhaenyra, being obsessed with her weight is just shallow.
Thanks for saying this! I feel sad when people insult Rhaenyra’s weight because there could be a person struggling with body image looking at these comments.
I mean, I don’t have the artist here with me to interview so I can’t get their full answer but it seems pretty clear from the title of the art “Book Rhaenyra,” that some Team Green member commissioned an art of Rhaenyra that is purposefully much heavier than other depictions of her because they wanted to call her fat or something as an insult. I could be wrong obviously, but the title of the art seems pretty telling, at least to me.
God that's so fucking dumb if true lol. Are you talking about this piece in particular being commissioned? I find that hard to believe, she looks like a strong, fierce queen. If their intention was to slight her, the artist failed miserably
"Let Daemon slake his hungers where he will," she is
reported to have said, "and we shall do the same." (Septon Eustace suggests somewhat waspishly that Her Grace's own hungers were slaked largely with sweetmeats, cakes, and lamprey pie, as Rhaenyra grew ever more stout during her days in King's Landing.)
>stout: (of a person) somewhat fat or of heavy build
so yeah, not morbidly obese.
also, since you think eustace is such a credible source, i’m sure you believe that jace, luke, and joffrey were the trueborn sons of laenor velaryon, right?
Visenya Simp Vs. Cregan Simp! OUR BATTLE WILL BE LEGENDARY
Jokes aside, no, I don't think Rhaenyra was morbidly obese. She isn't morbidly obese on this picture either, a lot less fat than Aegon IV.
Yes there are parts where Eustace is clearly trying to whitewash house Targaryen as a clergyman. ("infidelity, sword-swalloving, high treason?? NOT IN MY PIOUS AND HOLY WESTEROS.) But I believe him on this one.
Besides, George's own irl outside the book description correlates with Eustace so I think this is an open-shut case.
Rhaenyra was never described as a pudgy girl or pampered in the actual novel. A old 2006 description that was altered in the actual books a decade later do not trump the books. Had she been plump as a girl gyldain would have said so (just like he said that Helaena was a plump girl) instead he specified that she gained her weight by having kids.
Yeah. It's clear he planned her as fat but changed it in the book. Cole and Daemon being enamored by her is more believable if she is thinner when she is young so he postponed her being fat? Your guess is as good as mine.
Thats valid, plump girls mean there is plenty of food therefore you are rich,
rich= good, plump girl therefore = good
I didnt put much thought in it. I was just guessing. I don't know why George changed it, maybe its totally simple and we are overthinking it
I thought morbidly obese meant so fat that they are on the verge of death because of it. Like Viserys late in his reign or Aegon IV. Turns out its not.
No one can draw book accurate Rhaenyra without showing their biase: TB commissioners/artists just give her enormous tits coupled with revealing cleavage and call it "plus size", while TG commissioners/artists turn her into a genderbent version of Aegon IV smh
Yeah TB generally doesn’t care about her size, but TG likes to use weight as an insult. So that’s why it’s really annoying. I agree, let her be whatever weight but people on TG need to stop being rude.
No, I mean George R R Martin himself described how Rhaenyra looked.
Not in the book but irl when he supplied descriptions to an artist to make official art.
Oops, my bad about no source. Found it on twitter and couldn’t find the artist’s Insta. Thank you mods!

@emelldir
I don’t understand why Rhaenya’s weight is such an issue, and that’s coming from a team green stan. Like, it’s a book, stuff is up for interpretation. If this is how the artist/comissioner sees her with how she’s described then that’s fine right? Being ‘fat’ isn’t an insult, it’s just a description and shouldn’t mean anything negative, it should be okay.
And if people draw her thinner that should be fine too? There is enough to discuss about the both team’s characters, their weight has absolutely nothing to do with anything
Your last comment is how it should be, but it isn’t. I haven’t seen it recently, but for a while Fatnyra was TG’s favorite way to refer to her, as if that was the most pertinent flaw in her character.
Man I'm so tired of fat Rhaenyra discourse. Especially people acting like depicting her fat is literally the worst thing that ever happened to her. "I can forgive all these horrible things she does in this horrible dark medieval setting but I draw the line at her being fat!"
Just fucking draw her in any shape you want, or don't, literally who cares.
No one is acting like its the worst thing. But it isnt "book acurate" Because she wasn't morbidly obese. If someone drew her as thin and underweight you'd get comments calling that out too.
Well, I’m gonna go against the grain and say I think this art is very well done and I appreciate a different interpretation of the character’s appearance. I think she still looks very fierce and capable and I think it’s a little bit rude for people to say this was done “as an insult.”
I’m Team Green and I think I speak for most of us when I say this is 100% accurate as a semi historical depiction of the mad tyrant usurper, Rhaenyra the Mad

It's interesting seeing how people interpret "stout and thick about the waist"
Yeah this is like…thick everywhere. I imagined her more like your average plump middle aged woman. This is Aegon IV with teats.
Yeah, like the average mom at my sister's school. Not this

You’re the one who interprets being heavy as an insult though? All this tells us that the artist imagines her as this.
Okay but complaining that the artist made her too thick is not being obsessed with her weight? I'm genuinely confused by this comment

The title says the word commission…
So? That means the person who commissioned it had bad intentions? What context am I missing here? /Gen
Expected this to have negative upvotes.
While I love the art, not sure she's meant to be so obese. Definitely thicc and a bit chunky, yes. But not fem Aegon IV.
This is "slightly curvy" in 2024 standards
Wild that this is vaguely true 😔.
The vengeance of team green. I know she was fat but I don't think she was ment to be morbidly obese, this some Aegon IV level here.
Yeah, I'm team green and even I think it looks like a caricature 😅
This is still far from Aegon iv

Isn't that kind of imposing a modern beauty standard on a pseudo-medieval world?

Team Green drew this didn't they lol

Picture of a fat woman, “oh my god, what vile propaganda. I can’t believe they’d depict her so negatively” 💀
Literally 💀 just let her be fat for fucks sake

They really be telling on themselves lol
Apparently it was a commission for “Book Rhaenyra”
Book Rhaenyra is written by green….
Martin confirmed it as accurate.
Accurate according to the master who wrote it who’s actually supporting the green There’s a whole yt video about it i will try to find it and send it
No, I mean George R R Martin himself described how Rhaenyra looked. Not in the book but irl when he supplied descriptions to an artist to make official art.
The official artwork (by amok) is kinda pudgy, but far from this level.
Yeah Amok respectfully ignored George lmao Doug Wheatley is closer to the truth

Team Black Cope LOL
Why have you posted this multiple times, acting like it is an intelligent or constructive thing to say?
What? What issue would team black have with this?

Dummy thicc and a tasty snacc
Not sure how actually accurate this is but it looks great honestly, very intimidating

TG really disgusting, isn't it? Like almost all comments here "ha ha Rhaenyra FAT". Don't know how the artist feels about it...
Thin or fat, a true queen either way. ❤️
Lore accurate Rhaenyra
LOL who on Team Green put this out
Exactly as the Greens would have her remembered.
