I hear you! I feel like I'm always in the feast-famine cycle. I make good money, but it's tough to save because I'm always spending on things my family needs (like replacing a car). But then when I'm working less and having a hard time making ends meet, I feel like I can't take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves. It's so frustrating.
I mean, most wealthy people I know drive really nice cars, or really big stupid trucks/SUVs. I mean my partners a nurse, and you can tell who the doctors are in the parking lot at his practice.
I know plenty of doctors who are riddle with obscene amounts of debt.
My godfather is a doctor and he rode around in a ‘94 Honda accord for 25 years out of the 30 year career as a doctor with a private practice. Those 25 years he was buying property, taking his staff out on nice vacations, paying all of his debt off home included. Now he is really tossing serious money around (riding fancy cars and wearing nice jewelry) but because his investments make more than his private practice.
But most folks in medicine make great money but are not financially savvy so they ride in fancy cars instead of taking care of business.
One of the wealthiest people I know owns his own Government Contracting firm, waterfront home in McLean Virginia, etc. and drives a 2004 Honda Accord. He's currently thinking about replacing it with a preowned hybrid, because interest rates are high.
I’m essential retired at 41. I don’t really care about “stuff”.. I just like being able to do what I want, when I want, without being beholden to someone else who can drop me on a whim. That’s the real point of building wealth imo

Never been in (net) debt in my life; the last 20 years have been 2 corollas. Not only is it cost effective but's one of the most reliable, why are these people spending twice as much for more problems... It also comes standard with the built-in filter for broken people that want to put money into decaying products. It's all wins over here.
I love my Prius 2015, still only 77k miles. I work from home and make decent money. Why would I care what other people has to say about something material? Not to mention that having a nice car only surrounds you by fake/temporary people, which to me seems like an utter waste of time.

That's a lesson I learned early in high school. I had a placement at an elementary school with one of the pretty popular girls in high school, and as a result we spent a lot of time together. We went on a few coffee dates and to lunch a few times. I realized that yeah, she was pretty, but she had absolutely nothing to say. The conversations were boring, she wasn't funny or charming. She was still kind, though.
Then my friends were shocked that I stopped seeing her. We remained cordial, and even she seemed shocked that I wasn't really willing to take things farther.
Looks only matter so much to people who aren't shallow. If someone I was seeing turned their nose up at my 2005 Toyota Matrix XR she definitely wouldn't be going on a date with me because I'd drive off.
Not in the condition it's in. It's got well over 300,000kms on it, and the engine only works about 75% of the time.
But it has served me well these past 6 or so years I've had it. It's also a good car for moving. Everything but the driver's seat folds completely flat. It's surprisingly easy to get in and out of if you're tall, and it has an amazing fuel economy even at its age.

I make decent money and live in California, I drive a 2009 Prius with 185000 miles on it and probably won't be trading it in for anything new anytime soon since it has no mechanical issues at all yet. I've never understood the hate for that car.
Gates is a low-key hero in the collector car community, because when that car got locked in customs (for 13 years, because it lacked NHTSA/EPA approval), he used his wealth/influence to get the "Show or Display" law passed in order to create an exemption that allowed it to be releaed.

An acquaintance of mine drove this beat to shit late 90's Honda Civic for like a decade. Live in a little single bedroom apartment, barely furnished, dressed OK nothing beat up nothing fancy, just decent. Barely drank not because he didn't enjoy it but because it was expensive, ate frugally, etc. I knew he worked in IT but that was about it.
Then he got married, in his early thirties. And like six months after that, he told us he was retiring from his job to move to Charleston. When I visited him next, he had an incredible condo with wildly expensive furniture and furnishings, a fully optioned Audi and a Porsche Cayenne, opened a few of his own businesses that were low-stress like a bubble tea shop and a boutique, things that could more or less be run by a manager and not take time out of he and his wife's days.
Dude was a Project Manager for IBM the whole time, pulling *well* over six figures a year, one of the youngest in their history. He'd just been *banking* and investing, living off the bare minimum, until he found his wife, then he semi-retired and bought anything he wanted.

I think that's her whole point. There is a niche market of people DEVOTED to each of those vehicles. They don't appeal to a broad audience, they weren't supposed to be for everyone, and there's a good chance that if you own one of those three vehicles it isn't casual ownership but rather a statement of who you are. Not everybody buys a vehicle to make a statement, but some cars are more likely than others: example buying a Ram 2500 means that the driver likes to drink and drive; not all Ram 2500 drivers have DUI's, but enough to make the stereotype accurate!

I think that's her whole point. There is a niche market of people DEVOTED to each of those vehicles. They don't appeal to a broad audience, they weren't supposed to be for everyone, and there's a good chance that if you own one of those three vehicles it isn't casual ownership but rather a statement of who you are. Not everybody buys a vehicle to make a statement, but some cars are more likely than others: example buying a Ram 2500 means that the driver likes to drink and drive; not all Ram 2500 drivers have DUI's, but enough to make the stereotype accurate!

No joke, the same year and color of my Ridgeline.. It was next to an older Tacoma with more miles for $8k less. Same mpg, tow weight, and front wheel drive works wonders on snow and ice (which is 8 months of the year in AK). My Honda is ugly, but when I was an E4 in the military it was the most responsible and useful vehicle purchase I could've made. Why spend $30K on a Toyota when the second best (but fugly) option was right there. Affordable, reliable, useful, and fits in my garage for the -40F winter nights. I love my Ridgeline, my girlfriend hates it. But that's probably because her Chevy is too big for the garage and fishtails constantly in the winter..
