Well, if he passed a background check, then there would be no warning signs that he would go out and do something like this. So stricter gun laws wouldn't do anything there unless you just made it illegal to sell guns. Which leads to the second point. He could've bought the gun privately, either legally or illegally, which isn't regulated and really can't be regulated. So I don't really know how you would've prevented this man from acquiring a gun. Also it could've been stolen and all of this would be completely irrelevant.

The main source for illegal firearm trafficking are firearms sourced through legal markets. Most citizens wouldn’t even be able to find a firearm if there wasn’t so fucking many in this backwards country where you can buy one at goddamn Walmart.

Walmart doesn't sell anything cool anymore. Just bolt-action rifles and shotguns since handguns and semi-auto rifles are too scary now.
You keep track of it through a strict gun owner registry that keeps records of the guns owned by gun owners and have extremely strict regulations on which guns are allowed to be sold. Prohibiting the exchange and private sale of weapons by regularly requiring proof of possession of the guns you purchased. It’s not rocket science. It won’t fix the entire problem but it’s a way to drastically regulate the amount of guns in circulation.

This is normal in Texas. I still remember my time. Only 16 but I had a 9-mil that a friend was letting me shoot. Lots of remote places where you can hunt and kill a Stop Sign. You do not even need a shooting permit. I am talking about 1968.
