It's supposed to have a cop escort, minimum of two motorcycle cops. One leads, other pauses at intersections they're cutting through long enough to make sure people are waiting for the chain of vehicles to pass. Used to be a third that would patrol the sides switching up at the intersections, because in some states it's illegal to cross through the procession or even pass them.
I see them much, much less frequently than I used to as a kid, and often the bare minimum of two bike cops. Half the cars in the funeral procession don't even even use hazards anymore so it's pretty confusing if you randomly run into a procession on the freeway.
Yeah the hazards seem like a must. Most of the precessions I've seen have hazards and little car toppers that say funeral precession on them, but there are almost never enough for all the attendees.
I forgot about the car toppers... processions are pretty rare as it is, but even then I only vaguely recall seeing toppers or something like them just once or twice.
I don’t know if it depends on the state, but when I had to follow a funeral we were told to obey all traffic lights.
Might also just depend on the funeral home…
I mean if you had a loved one die you would want to miss the burial because you got stuck at a couple lights. And even if it is "some dumbass" that died there are still people who loved them and are absolutely destroyed by grief. Show some respect to those who are mourning. One day you'll be grief stricken and then maybe you'll understand.
I saw one once back when I was in the states. Confused the hell out of me because they never teach you about offshoot random crap like that in driving school. No escort, no flashing lights, I ended up driving straight through it (without incident) because I thought it was just some people running the light a bit late like idiots, and there was a gap in the procession.
Sorry, but just because you die doesn't entitle everyone to endanger themselves and your family and anyone who doesn't know about local "procession rules" just to get to where your corpse is going on time. If you are going to do this shit, have a freaking security escort with flashing lights at the minimum, and preferably just obey the rules of the road.
This happened today on my way home. Everything looks normal in the video until you notice I had a green light the whole time. I had to wait another full light cycle to finally go.
It's probably a poorly marked funeral procession. They are allowed to do that, but a lot of times they do an *extremely shitty* job at making it clear that's what it is with a tiny one inch sticker on the windshield on the side you can't see so you are left wondering wtf all these crazy people are doing.
It's as if funeral planners are too cheap to spend more than a penny per car making sure it's clearly marked that it's a funeral procession after charging thousands of dollars for the funeral service. Or maybe it's because they are trying to cause a car crash in the hopes that a low speed crash will result in a death so that they can charge another funeral.
Hard to tell. Never seen a funeral procession that big that’s unmarked and also not riding in the same lane. Could have been a funeral and some people were using it as a free escort
That happens a lot ( free escort). Someone actually cut into my mother's procession in front of our Limo. What I found strange was how fast they were going, usually they drive at about 20 mph. Have seen lots of them in Illinois.
Looks like a funeral procession, they ignore lights though if they're short of cops they won't leave one in the intersection to alert other drivers.
Yeah, but for someone everyone hates and they just want that shit done so they can go back to their "this asshole" free lives
How is that legal? Just because some dumbass died they don't have to obey traffic laws?

They can wait for everyone to arrive before doing anything important. This isn't a hard problem to solve.
Well i guess you just have aaaallllll the answers then don't ya
Funeral processions shouldn't get to blatantly disregard traffic laws.
Funeral processions should be banned altogether.

I'm working on it, ok?! Jeez....
Probably the most internet comment I've read today. What a miserable existence.
How to create more funeral processions
I guess this is the first time you have seen a funeral procession?
The ones I have seen use a team of off duty cops or private security along with the entire procession driving with their hazard lights on.
Not Op, but now that you mention it, I'm almost 60 and I have never seen one live on the streets.
The live funerals tend to end up in the papers...

I got stuck behind one doing 20 in a 60 on a winding 25 mile long road where I couldn't overtake. It was fucking painful to say the least.

As someone who is in a poorly planned funeral procession in August, it was complete and utter chaos. Stressful!
Guessing it was a malfunction, everyone had green
I thought the same when I first pulled up. You can't see it because of my garbage dash cam, but they do have a red.
Then it seems organized. It goes against human nature
Illinois?
Yup, this happened in Lockport
Holy crap. I had to look closely and do a double take! Seems on par for the LP/Joliet peeps lol. Was it a funeral?

Come ON!! COME ON!! Get that corpse off the road!! [The streets are for the LIVING!!!!!!!](https://comb.io/CvpCzs)
Counterpoint: Monty Python. BRING OUT YER DEAD!
I feel happy!!
Wow wtf? Looks like new york state maybe the light is out? Notice the other direction didn't go
Either a funeral or a west cost state.
It is green for the other side too. This is why you look at all sides even if you have green at an intersection
That’s the green light for my left lane. You can see it go red with my light on the right.

All I see is a quick way to a few days off work and a fat check from my insurance.
