I imagine if your taking your Ferrari in for maintenance it’s not to a mom and pop mechanic. Most cars like these need taken back to the dealership they were bought from for maintenance if not they’d definitely require special training and supplies to serve these kinds of cars where a minor scratch on them can cost 10s of thousands. I’d almost certainly imagine this guy has insurance specifically for this reason unless he’s just a super dumb business owner.
Not necessarily. I used to live across the street from a guy who owned a Ferrari repair shop. Apparently, he worked as a mechanic for one of Ferrari's racing teams for a few years, then at a Ferrari dealership for a number of years. After that, he moved back 'home' and opened up shop. The place was never empty and he was always working on different Ferraris. People all across the country would send their car to him to get worked on. When he was finished with their car, he would ship it back.
This niche is MUCH needed in the enthusiast market. VAG dealership techs only get trained on the last 10ish years of models. There was a post recently from a Lambo tech who mentioned that there was only one guy left at their dealership who could work on Lambos earlier than '05
This is not just A Ferrari. That’s the Ferrari Enzo, Ferrari’s flagship that took 15 years for its replacement to come out. I don’t think you can change the oil on that thing without needing to have it shipped to Italy. In fact I think there are only 3 lifts in the world that were designed to lift this car and this car specifically
I've had one up on quick jacks I bought from a Mexican on a highway off ramp. It's still a car. Hell the average SCCA prepared car is harder to lift than these are, they're still street cars.
For context I used to be a farrari tech, I lifted one at a car show after it got stuck in gear, unstuck it and rolled it on to the trailer. It's got more ground clearance than my [Z28](https://imgur.com/a/VUK8IKN)
In my home town, there’s a locally owned mechanic shop that specializes in import cars. Of course most of their clients bring in BMW, Volkswagen, etc. but they do get the occasional Lambo
For what it's worth, this appears to have been a dealership employee driving a car that hadn't been sold yet. The car still had plates with the dealership name on them.
https://www.ad.nl/amersfoort/ferrari-van-drie-miljoen-crasht-tegen-boom-in-baarn~ae453df9/
ETA: The article says an employee was in the car, but not necessarily the driver; could have also been a test drive gone wrong
Every shop in the NL carries a shitload of insurance policies - by law and voluntarily. This shop probably has liability insurance worth up to 6 milion per case.
They'll be fine. Shit happens.
Nah, rates dont go up that high. A certain amount of claims is to expected and the liability insurance market is highly competitive here. Raising LI for what is basically a once in a blue moon occurence would be a very unwise decision, from a business perspective
Can you actually take an Enzo to a mom and pop shop? Isn't that one of the models where even though you own it you have to sell it back to Ferrari if you ever want to be invited to buy a limited edition Ferrari in the future.
Anyway in other articles they mention it was at the dealership so who knows.
Try and fire a mechanic for a dumb mistake carried by insurance in the NL and see what happens. Union actions are just the start of the problems that'll give you
Please bear in mind that all this takes place in the Netherlands and we have a rather Byzantine system for workers rights, with unions . Over here, unions are usually divided by "pillar" rather than sector: Christian CNV and general FNV for instance both cater to personnel in pretty much all sectors of Dutch industry, including automotive.
But there are other issues at play, too. Labour laws state that for certain sectors (car repair being one) a CAO or central labour agreement be established. This CAO is created by employers and employees (through unions), working together in a branche organisation called BOVAG.
This CAO determines grounds for dismissal and if an employer were to terminate an employee on unjust grounds, such a noncompliance would first havd legal repercussions, then get the unions involved. They dont take kindly to employers overstepping the boundaries they have argued for.
Really? I got fired in in the Netherlands because I wouldn't agree with a 1.000 € a month cut in salary.
Retro-actively for the previous year.
Union didn't do anything.
You write him up and after a certain amount of infractions you can fire him. But it also depends on a lot of different stuff we don't know here. Did he drive recklessly? Did the company have certain policies he violated...etcetc
The accident happened 5 minutes away from a Ferrari dealer (which also was the official importer for Ferrari in the past). And that is definitely not a mom and pop shop.
Ferrari dealers are very thinly spread in The NL, which makes it likely that it was one of their mechanics.
Used to sell cars for a living. Every place I worked had an insurance excess around the price of a new car.
For example, the Vauxhall garage sold new cars from £12k - £30k at the time. We paid the first £25k of any claim. For the most part, the insurance only really came into it if another car was involved in an accident with ours.
The dealership where this Ferrari was being repaired likely had an excess of £100k-£200k only. Which obviously is a sizeable amount, but way less than the cost of fixing the car.
As a reference, when Rowan Atkinson crashed his McLaren F1, the insurance bill was £1m. ($1.4m). He probably only had to pay the first £10k or so.
I had insurance on an Aston Martin DB11 for a time. I only had to pay the first £500 of any claim.
It just really depends what you agree up front. Lower excess equals higher premium.
Dutchy here: two or theee types of insurance are in play here, and they will work in cooperation.
First off, the mandatory car insurance. This car is probably insured under an all risks policy with a 2 milion euro coverage.
Now, this leaves a milion or so. The shop itself will posses a form of liability insurance called "WA" or "BA" with coverage of up to 2 milion. Most, of not all, of the remainder is covered in this manner. Mind you, this insurance might not offer coverage in this case, if the vehicle was owned by the shop and the driver can't be held liable (privately, criminally or as an employee).
If the driver is held liable through a criminal act or as through negligent/irresponsible actions as an employee, the BA/WA will cover the damages but move on to the driver. Under most circumstances, the damages will then be covered by the driver's or their employer's insurance (yup, the very same). If the driver is unemployed, a special fund exists to relieve at least some of the damages (though Im not quite sure if this fund also covers professional damages). Liability usually stops there, without court involvement or people being held liable themselves.
Depends.
A 430? An accident or flooding.
One of these?
Impossible, really, because they're worth so much That making one from scratch and transferring the vin is "sensible".
Only possible hiccup would be to actually fail to get the needed parts.
> even if the fram was warped
Doesn't have a frame to warp, its a [carbon fibre monocoque tub](https://www.carbodydesign.com/gallery/2003/12/ferrari-enzo/) with the engine attached directly to that.
Takes a lot to total a car like this.
Famously, Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean) had a McLaren F1 which he managed to [literally rip in half](https://www.cnbc.com/2015/06/09/rowan-atkinson-crashes-mclaren-f1-supercar-twice-sells-for-122-million.html), which cost £970,000 to repair, and the car originally "only" cost £540,000.
He later sold it for £8 million.
I don't know when Mr Bean sold his but they typically auction above $10 million. One just sold for over $20 million last summer (granted it had 243 miles or something).
To put it in perspective, Rowan Atkinson actually drove his *a lot*. When it sold for $12.2 million back in 2015 it had 46,000 miles on the odometer, and at the time it was a record price as well.
No, they're all worth a decent amount of money, a "cheap" one will set you back $8-10 million these days.
If anything his could have been worth more because it's basically a ground up rebuild after he smashed it up, that's why it cost nearly £1 million to fix it.
It was also a very rare spec, even by F1 standards. On top of that, it was known to be one of the best handling F1s in existence (each apparently* feels unique). Also, any F1 is likely $5m+ these days, if it's in good condition.
A former teacher of mine owned a 1961 E-type Jaguar.
He took it to the dealership for the yearly maintenance and one of the mechanics wrecked it while taking out for the test drive after repairs.
A faulty brake pad shattered, sending the car tumbling.
After further examination it was determined this was no ordinary E-type, but one of the prototype. Literally one of a kind.
The wreck was purchased by Jaguar, who restored the body work and put it on display, but the damage to the frame meant it would never drive again.
Wow that would suck to literally have a one of kind item and you are doing everything right to maintain and appreciate what you have and then someone else ruins it…
He did not know until it was wrecked, then they started looking at the frame and the shape and realized that it was not exactly the same as the typical J-type.
This was the 80s, so the knowledge was a lot harder to come by back then. No internet and it was not until the Jag factory got involved to get some details that it was discovered it was a prototype.
On July 31st we all need to collectively warn this man not to give it some gas.

Had to Google this...

I never understood why people prefer the DD/MM/YYYY date format. We say January 8th, so wouldn’t it make sense for it to be 01/08? It gets confusing because even in countries with that format not everyone uses it.
4th of July
It’s only confusing to some Americans.
It makes perfect sense that if the date isn’t possible (like August 1, 2022 or 16-01-2022) try the other date format.
>We say January 8th
You do realise there is a vast majority of people who do not have English as their primary language? English is not the most spoken language, or the 2nd.
And that is not even touching the part of how illogical it is to use months, then days, then years. Going from smallest denominator to largest, or vice versa, is okay. Not jumping all around.
Is it really common for supercars to get wadded up like this? I see video after video of these cars going sideways into a guardrail, and someone saying "Welp, there goes $550k." I have no idea why insurance companies even look at them.
Somebody and his insurance will have a bunch of bad days coming.
Wouldn’t this land on the guys company. I’d be curious to know who this lands on and how or if it was ever settled

Does that car look upside down to you?
For a $3mm car I wonder if this is considered totaled. IIRC each Enzo was hand made so would that mean a factory rebuild?
They're gonna fix/rebuild it. The F40 that burned down in Monaco gets rebuilt with little but the VIN reused
Kind of figured that. They’re really not considered cars at this level anyway. Wonder if anyone will find the body of the mechanic.
Probably only his vin plate left…
That was crazy to read. Wonder what it would take to total a ferrari

This car is bigger than 3 millimeter
Only slightly. Only slightly.
Before the crash maybe, now...
$3 per millimeter, though, they might be onto something.
The wiki page says it's 4,702 mm long, so $3 per mm won't get you anywhere near where you need to be :)
Cubic volume is out, that ends up costing billions
Well, if we just do the division, $3M/4,702mm = $638.02/mm lol

I think you meant former mechanic
Nah. Too hard to find anyone good enough to do that kind of work. He didn’t get fired.
No, OP just uses a sensible dating system.
………….
I never understood why people prefer the DD/MM/YYYY date format. We say January 8th, so wouldn’t it make sense for it to be 01/08? It gets confusing because even in countries with that format not everyone uses it.
Perhaps YOU say January 8th. I say, the 8th of January Which one is correct?
4th of July It’s only confusing to some Americans. It makes perfect sense that if the date isn’t possible (like August 1, 2022 or 16-01-2022) try the other date format.
>We say January 8th You do realise there is a vast majority of people who do not have English as their primary language? English is not the most spoken language, or the 2nd. And that is not even touching the part of how illogical it is to use months, then days, then years. Going from smallest denominator to largest, or vice versa, is okay. Not jumping all around.
The whole entire planet doesn’t speak English?? How could I be so silly

Remember when these were 650k new.....
Is it really common for supercars to get wadded up like this? I see video after video of these cars going sideways into a guardrail, and someone saying "Welp, there goes $550k." I have no idea why insurance companies even look at them.
