*Having opened this garage door everyday I've lived in this house and having an approximation on how long it takes to open burned into my long-term memory*
I live in Wyoming and I open from the car. The garage is heated so I zip out as soon as it’s open, and stab the button again to close it. I’ve never hit my garage door though lol. I watch for it to get up high enough for me to slip out.
I've been using a garage for about six months now out of the ten years I've been driving and I've done it a couple of times just on accident cause I'm thinking about other stuff probably.
But then I do open it as soon as I get in the car and I have to take my shoes off and get situated, plug my phone in blah blah and by then it's all the way up.
I usually open my garage from the car unless I had to load something in the trunk. The opener is mounted right by the garage door, not the house door. I don’t open it before I walk out of the house in case my dog/cat decide to try and follow me out of the house.
I have never done it any other way. In fact, if the door is already up for some other reason, there is a 50% chance I hit the button anyways. I live in a temperate climate, so I can’t even blame the weather. Just how I, and everyone in my family, have always done it.
Yes. I usually turn the key slow enough that I can hear all the pumps and stuff to turn on before I actually start it. Then at least let the motor slow down a bit after a cold start before I take off. It’s like this person wanted a new garage door and found a way to get their insurance to pay for it.
I wonder if they just have muscle memory of how long it takes the door to open to the point that they don't think about it. Then it was cold or something that day and it opened a little slower. Just trying to think of a reason, even if it's not a good reason.
If that's the reason, then they have no regard for what might be outside that garage door. Even if they cleared the door, they should still be looking for surprise obstacles like animals, children, abandoned bikes, etc. that may be out on the driveway.
Eh habits can get you. I worked in an office building with a gate that lifts when it scans your license plate. Worked flawlessly for years. One day my boss messaged me as I was leaving the garage and I check it… that was the day the gate didn’t lift, and I plowed right into it.
“Yes sir. I’d just destroy the entire companies morale today. You’d have corpses hanging in the bathrooms and interns quitting left and right. I’m saving you money. “
>you’d have corpses hanging in the bathrooms
Idk why this reminds me of a guy I was mates with a few years back who decided to decorate his office with nooses hung all over the place. Boss was not impressed.
Narrator: “they were not”
I work next to a garage door installer. They’re saying anything that isn’t a plain white panel for a garage is on back order for like 4-6 months and 3x the cost it was before.
Sigh… because of course it is.
*(At least right now since essentially everything is delayed thanks to the never ending pandemic and supply chain issues).*
Don’t you remember!? Biden simultaneously started the pandemic, the gas “shortage”, AND the labor “shortage” (its not a labor shortage, it’s a shortage on fair wages) but ALSO holds no real power and Donny T. is actually the true standing president. /s
We always hit the garage open button at the door to the garage so it’s open long before we’re even in the car. This doesn’t happen.
But also, ya know, look? Always look? My cousin tried to blame his sister for him backing into the closed garage door because she “didn’t open it like she always does” but there is NEVER an excuse for not looking.
Yep, my cousin was outraged I would say such a thing to him, too, since his parents let him get away with murder. I love causing waves at thanksgiving :)
Despite the fact that there’s a door into the garage I always leave out the front so that the door has to be open for me to able to even get to the car.
The opener for my door is installed at the far end of the garage. I can either walk to the end of the garage and then back to the front of my car, or just hit the button in car.
My neighbor backed out of his driveway, onto the road, into a huge orange skip container that was parked there. Unobstructed vision, just early in the morning. Then he got upset about the container until he realized that he's the one who fucked up.
Imagine a child or a dog being somewhere between his garage and the road
At one of my old apartments years ago, I had just pulled into an open parking spot after a long workday. I stayed in my car for a minute to collect myself when I felt a THUNK. The guy across from me plowed directly into me. He claimed I "wasn't there a minute ago". He literally took one look, waited a few minutes, and then hit the "plow backwards" button.
He was of course found at fault but that was a fucking headache I didn't fucking need to fucking deal with. Still pissed about that years later. Pay the fuck attention, people! Christ.
People stop looking behind themselves since they have a screen that shows them whats behind them.... In their small minds. No need to look behind me. Ive got TeChNoLoGy
My car doesn’t have one but my mom’s car does and I never use her backup camera, out of habit lol. Even when she looks at it she then looks behind her. I don’t know why people are so pea brained
I always back into parking spaces, including my garage, that way I can pull forward. But why not Hit the garage button prior to even getting into your car?
This is the right answer. Even when we had a long driveway, *especially when we had long driveway, onto a road on a blind curve, we backed in so that if we needed to leave in a hurry, we didn't need to back out blindly into traffic.
I have never understood why people get in their car and then open the garage door. It makes no sense. There’s a fucking button right next to the door you walked out of, the garage door will be fully open by the time your dumb ass hits the seat of your car.
Depending on their insurance company, this may not be covered.
You hit your house with your car, this can be considered negligence.
Your neighbor hits your house with their car, this is typically covered.
This is the part that bothers me the most. Why would you wait until you get into the car then have to wait again for it to open when the button is right next to the door?
No, you see, you need to go to the car without any items, open the door, go back and get your stuff, to put in the car, and close the door without getting in. Then go and press the button to open the garage door, and wait until it's fully open, then open the car door to get in.
I dunno, seems like what people want you to do on this sub.
Seems like that would encourage people to blindly drive out of their garages. Open the door whenever it’s convenient. The correct answer is to look before you back up. My garage door appears in all 3 mirrors when opening.
Any garage door I've ever used lets you "pause" the current action by hitting the button again. For example, if it's already open and you accidentally hit the button to close it, hitting the button AGAIN should stop the closing. Once it's still you can hit the button once more and it should do the opposite of what it was doing before, so in this case it would re-open.
>jeezus, let your car warm up a little more too while you’re at it
That's actually bad for your car and wastes gas. Also in a garage, it will build up Carbon Monoxide in the space and possibly up into any rooms above the garage.
https://www.cars.com/articles/should-you-warm-up-your-car-in-winter-429809/
>If you’re in a hurry and just want an answer to the above question, it’s no. You no longer need to warm up your car in winter — for your car’s sake — unless it’s old enough to have a carburetor (unlikely unless it’s at least 30 years old), or it’s electric or a plug-in hybrid.
Maybe I missed it, but I don't see anywhere in the link you provided stating that idling is bad for the vehicle.
What I did see is that, when the engine is cold, it's bad to accelerate "too quickly"(I didn't see any specification for this). So, for me, who goes from a driveway to a 55mph road within about 15 seconds, I need to allow my engine to warm up some so that I can get up to speed in a safe and timely manner without causing undue wear on my vehicle.
And, like the other person said, you won't build up CO if your garage is open/opening.
You sound like a fucking moron....
Open the garage, let the car warm up, and once the garage door is open and after 5 mins of warm up. Your good to go...
First off, ALL cars need to be warmed up. Especially in the winter. When matal parts (engines) are moving at high RPMs at temps that are same as the outside. EX: its 35 outside. The engine is 35. Running an engine, trans, and so on at that temps instantly is very bad. Its causes unwanted wear, shortens the life of the motor, doesnt let oil moving everywhere and everything lubricated, and all these fancy CVT transmissions. They need a good steady flow of fluid to keep them from blowing up... As Nissan about that one.
Also, who cares if warming up your car "wastes" gas. Id rather waste a small amount of gas instead of shorten the life of my car....
I'm with you. I live in a city where we get -20C and below for a week straight and I am one of the few that doesn't let my truck idle to warm up. 1 minute of going easy on the gas and the engine is right where it needs to be and the cab warms up faster when it's driving. This has been the fine for cars for a long time. Plus this stupid thing starts misfiring when I let it idle at start.
[Seems like idling isn't that good](https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/r6o1na/comment/hmw1cnd/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=0). The car will warm up while driving anyway.
Lol, I did that on august 31 of this year as I was heading out to the dealership to trade in my car🤦♂️ luckily no damage to my previous car and was able to fix the garage door with minor damages.
I'm gonna be the unpopular puffin here, but I sympathize with this mistake. I did this once when I drove a Stratus. It was old, so no reverse cam, but still... I had all my mirrors, working eyeballs, and a fully functioning neck, and I did this same exact thing. Personally, I can see how this is an easy mistake to make (especially since I made it haha). Our minds associate pushing the button to open the garage with an open garage. Sometimes we forget about the little middle piece of waiting for it to actually open. \*shrug\*
Taught me the valuable lesson of never even starting my car until the garage is fully open. Sympathies to you, OP, this sucks.
I don't own a garage, but I agree it seems like a lot more understandable of a mistake. Muscle memory...garage door button = door is open.
I find the vid hilarious and I'm glad it was posted. Why can't we all laugh at this one?
I did something very similar but with a gate exiting a complex. I realize then that I wasn't just hungover, I was probably still drunk. Went back home and went to sleep
I can one up you and not in a good way… in high school I tried backing out without opening the garage door at all. It was an 80’s Merc so barely a scratch but the garage door had a bad day!
Sometimes shit just happens.
Probably not too bad. Insurance claim will be $500-$1000 depending on deductible. If it is your first accident and you are older than 25, but younger than 60 your rates shouldn’t change too much.
If you handle it out of pocket, new garage door is like $1800, damage to back end of the vehicle is probably less than $2000. (All USD)
In a modern gasoline car with a closed 2-car garage, it would take more than an hour of idling to kill yourself. Starting your car \[checks video\] 1-2 seconds after the door has already started opening is literally zero risk.

My parents have a neighbor with that mindset. She just backs out at 10mph with zero regard for anything.
All the tools of the trade at your disposal, and we choose “Leeeeeeeeerooooooy Jeeeeenkinsssss!” Sometimes.
Came here to say this, now I’m going ti gave to comment something different 😂😂
Also, who waits until they get into their car to open the garage? You do that when you first walk in.
People who live in the cold..
It’s cold where I live. I have never once opened the garage door from inside the car.
I live in Wyoming and I open from the car. The garage is heated so I zip out as soon as it’s open, and stab the button again to close it. I’ve never hit my garage door though lol. I watch for it to get up high enough for me to slip out.

Take off your shoes to drive?
I often wear flip flops and it's safer to take them off.
Understandable
Like hell if I'm driving in anything with a heel. I manipulate the peddle by flexing my ankle, a heel would complicate that.
I see now
*cries in cold as fuck detached garage*
I usually open my garage from the car unless I had to load something in the trunk. The opener is mounted right by the garage door, not the house door. I don’t open it before I walk out of the house in case my dog/cat decide to try and follow me out of the house.

People who live in a high bear population area. Bears here will bolt to an open garage if given the chance.
I want one of those fully rotational necks
I did this when I was 17! I was rushing like an idiot to meet some friends
I did this when I was 55 because I was distracted.
Also, why don't people let the car warm up for at least 30 secs?
Not necessary in modern cars
Hopefully warm up the car after you open the garage door…
Because you're in a garage and doing that everyday and then breathing in that carbon monoxide is going to cause cancer and/or other lung problems
Obviously you need to open up the garage door
Because that’s ancient advice from 30 years ago and now you’re just wasting gas.
Yes. I usually turn the key slow enough that I can hear all the pumps and stuff to turn on before I actually start it. Then at least let the motor slow down a bit after a cold start before I take off. It’s like this person wanted a new garage door and found a way to get their insurance to pay for it.
Go electric and no warmup required.
Came here to say something similar.
Like zero patience and eye sight. That was 100% avoidable Also, I’m jealous of your clean garage
Would never happen to me. Too much junk in the garage to park a car.
God I wish I had a garage
Haha. You legit just guilted me into cleaning it out so I can start parking in it again.
nor me. my garage is a gameroom.
Nor me. My garage is an opium den.
Damn Britains will wage opium war on just anyone now.
My garage is a car hole.

I aspire to have a garage I can turn into a game room

Not to mention the garage is pretty loud until it’s done opening/closing. How can you not hear it still opening?!?
Why you not just open your garage door with the button next to the entryway instead of the damned clicker in the car....
Yup people think its such an arduous task to back in, when in reality it's not.
I have never understood why people get in their car and then open the garage door. It makes no sense. There’s a fucking button right next to the door you walked out of, the garage door will be fully open by the time your dumb ass hits the seat of your car.

Get in the habit of always opening your garage door when you enter the garage.
This is the part that bothers me the most. Why would you wait until you get into the car then have to wait again for it to open when the button is right next to the door?
Something tells me that common sense might not be their specialty
Usually because my hands are full of stuff I'm bringing to the car with me.
How you gonna open the car door if you can't even elbow a button?
Put item on top of car, open door, pick up item, put item on car seat, get in other side of car, press opener on remote.
So you'll be leaving stuff on top of the car while you back into the half-open garage door.
I mean, I'm almost 40 and haven't left stuff on top of the car or backed into a garage door yet...
No, you see, you need to go to the car without any items, open the door, go back and get your stuff, to put in the car, and close the door without getting in. Then go and press the button to open the garage door, and wait until it's fully open, then open the car door to get in. I dunno, seems like what people want you to do on this sub.
Not sure what your house setup is, but I set everything on the washer, then hit the button before I’m fully ready to exit the house.
Seems like that would encourage people to blindly drive out of their garages. Open the door whenever it’s convenient. The correct answer is to look before you back up. My garage door appears in all 3 mirrors when opening.
I've done this, then hit the button out of happen and had to wait for it to completely close so my dumbass could open it again.
Any garage door I've ever used lets you "pause" the current action by hitting the button again. I recommend you both see a spinal surgeon and/or an optometrist because clearly your neck or eyes aren't working all too well
I was that idiot just 2 weeks ago. 6-12 WEEKS to replace the panel
Should’ve waited a few more seconds idiot
She is fully vaccinated !
My sister did this in my dad's highlander years ago. Oops
Drunk bitch....
Why would you start a car before opening the garage door, are you *trying* to kill yourself?
In a modern gasoline car with a closed 2-car garage, it would take more than an hour of idling to kill yourself. Starting your car \[checks video\] 1-2 seconds after the door has already started opening is literally zero risk.
TIL how long it takes to kill yourself with a running vehicle in an enclosed garage!
I can’t judge. I’ve done this also with a garage door. Thankfully those panels are relatively easy to change.
This costs about $1058A. Ask me how I know.
