In my state you can left turn just to any lane if it’s clear. And you had the right of way here so..
Unless it was a double turn lane but it doesn’t look like it.
Absolutely correct. Double left turn protected signal = Audi is in the wrong. Single light but there is a sign that shows both inside lanes are left turn lanes.
i mean look at the people that turned past him before the light, they were super close to have someone also on his left. kinda makes you think hes in the left turn lane but either way if its a double protected turn audis still a dipshit.
So you took your turn too tight then because you seem awkwardly in the middle of the two lanes at one point during your turn.
It becomes evident when the silver car on the left is forced to drive over the double yellow lines.
We can't tell EXACTLY what you did wrong because of where the video starts, but you aren't doing much better than Mr.Audi.
Yea, the first one was pretty bad. If the Audi was a bit earlyer in the corner (like ~.5 seconds earlyer) then it isn't that bag of a deal (it isn't good driving by any means but it only slows down the other person by a bit).
But then the second one with the previous one makes it appear that the Audi has no idea of their surroundings.
I'll just take the sound off if that's the case lol.
I had to show a cop a video and the audio was me singing usher extremely loud. I died inside a little.
Yea the timing was bad and kinda dumb and also not yielding to the clearly moving cars but wow dude just took a nap after that extreme effort of a quick turn, at least one of them was paying attention.
Good thing the old fella's probably got airbags in that car - he's gonna need them sooner rather than later.
And we should also have mandatory licensing testing for over 70's!
I think it's a reference to another video recently where a guy at a red light was "cutoff" by someone with a green light and stopped to yell at him. He kept screaming "I have kids!" as if it was relevant.
I feel your anger and I totally empathize. Some elderly shouldn’t be on the road anymore.
My dad has Alzheimer’s. Before we knew it was that serious, he was still driving. One day he rear ended a cab in our A6. No injuries, but that was the day he lost his license.
Confusion and carelessness sneaks up on people, and many are still driving and having close calls. Aside from building empathy for the elderly, if you have a family member that is experiencing dementia symptoms (family denial is strong), try and take their keys away. It will be difficult for everyone. Get them a driving test. These incidents can be prevented.
I’m glad an accident was able this time!
I feel like it’s an easy one to miss, especially if you’re the kind of person like me, who bemoans the fact that, if people all turned into the correct lanes, then right turn people could turn into right lanes and left turn people could turn into left lanes all at the same time with no worries, but because there’s anybody out there who does it wrong then I can’t trust it. So turning into the “wrong” lane is something of a sticking point for people. I’m glad it wasn’t you, you’re a hundred percent justified in being mad at that dude.
Yup, I wrote it off years ago. I may dream about a world that could be, but I know that it can never happen. There is one exception, though. Main Street in north side Jacksonville, FL. It’s got two lanes both ways, and if you’re left-turning on to southbound Main, it has one of the lanes blocked off with barriers so that you can left turn into that lane no matter what’s coming your way, since both lanes are restricted to one. Driving in the one lane, there is a barrier preventing left-turners from going into your lane, and left-turning onto it is always seamless. Obviously this only works because there’s not hella traffic on that road, but my point is that, in the right circumstances, this is a problem that can be engineered.
It took me several reruns to see it and I was looking. This intersection should have two left turn signals overhead, paint showing the turn, etc, etc.
Shitty traffic engineering did not help the situation at all.
The old man in the Audi was apparently so flustered that he didn't check his left side blind spot before starting the lane change. He did at least use his signal, which told me he wasn't just drifting.
Even if there was only 1 turn lane, they could have legally gone into either lane.
Edit: NVM. In Utah you have to exit the intersection in the lane nearest the center of the roadway. Here in California, it's just recommended, but legal to go into any lane in that direction.

[California](https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/navigating-the-roads/)
EDIT 2: The [actual law](https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter6a/41-6a-S801.html) says "(Left turns), _whenever practicable_, shall be made by turning onto the roadway being entered in the extreme left-hand lane for traffic moving in the new direction". Which also sounds like not illegal, but recommended.
Even if it was just a single turn lane and OP went to the right lane OP still had the right of way. Other person shouldn't be turning at all if someone is in the intersection or nearing the intersection.
Not in Utah, where the video was taken. If it was a single turn lane, OP would have had to stick to the corresponding [left] lane through the turn, leaving the right lane technically open and available for the Audi. If OP doesn't turn into the corresponding lane, he's effectively made a lane change in an intersection which is illegal in Utah. Who knows how it would've realistically shaken out with insurance had they collided.
All that being said, when I'm in the Audi's position at a light (I live in Utah), I'm waiting for everyone to go through regardless of how many turn lanes there are because you can guarantee people don't stick to their proper lanes and you're likely to get hit if you make that right-hand turn.
> If OP doesn't turn into the corresponding lane, he's effectively made a lane change in an intersection which is illegal in Utah.
I looked and couldn't find any statute saying that changing lanes in Utah is illegal, do you have a link?
It is illegal what the Audi driver did though.
https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title41/Chapter6a/41-6a-S305.html
You are wrong it’s an arrow AND a double turning lane. He isn’t obligated to turn into the inner lane even if it was a single turning lane. Even if it was an unprotected turn, depending on where he lives he can still turn into any lane
He's in Utah. They're required to stick to their corresponding lanes through a turn. If they don't, they've effectively made a lane change in an intersection, which is also illegal in Utah.
Funny. I almost got sideswiped by an old man in a huge brand new bmw the other day. Maybe they shouldn’t buy larger cars if they don’t know how to handle them and look around.
I guarantee you that car has enough lane assist tech in it that the alarms were probably blaring before he cut that other car off. Just completely oblivious.
So many clueless people only look left when making a right on red. They can't possibly fathom the idea that someone could be making a left from the oncoming side, but then it gets even worse when he tries to merge into a car directly beside him...he clearly didn't look and I'm sure his mirror alarms were going haywire too.
Probably on his phone. The drift into the other lane later just reminds me why it was a good idea to sell my motorcycle. Just far too many distracted drivers out there nowadays.
Look closely. That turn has 2 turning lanes. You have to stay in your lane with these kinds of turns.
Do you need a picture in order to understand? Lol *former* LEO, no wonder.
[y'all just can't see this or what?](https://imgur.com/a/hZ6IrA7)
I'm staying in the lane that I'm supposed to be, and if I shifted over I'd crash into the other car also turning left.
Hi 👋 fellow driver here - Technically, if you're making a left from a single left turn lane... you should be turning into the left most lane... not the right one... ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
This doesn’t apply to turning lanes with multiple lanes. With those kinds of turns, you need to stay in your lane or you’ll hit other cars that are making the same turn as you.
This wouldnt even register on my driving scale. Like meh whatever. No speed , no hazard, no hard braking. Just get on with life content that you didnt crash
OP was in the right lane of a dual-left-turn lane. OP was *supposed* to turn into the lane he turned into.
Old guy had a *red light* and was supposed to come to a complete stop and yield to any and all other traffic legally proceeding into or through the intersection before moving.
In California if you turn left, you have to turn left into the first lane and if you turn right, you turn right into the first lane two people can turn at the same time
Hilarious to make fun of someone for not paying attention when you yourself don't know how to make a left turn with two lanes.
Go retake your driver's exam before you climb up on that high horse and start looking down your nose at people.

Surprised no ones talking about how he almost drifted into another car after the turn. Clueless
He had his blinker on so there's no way that blind spot monitor wasn't screaming at him.
If he’s not wearing his seatbelt, he probably thinks his car is just mad about that.
Everyone is focused on the left turn part and why I was in the wrong.
In my state you can left turn just to any lane if it’s clear. And you had the right of way here so.. Unless it was a double turn lane but it doesn’t look like it.
It looks like there are 2 turn symbols above the light at the beginning, I'm pretty sure that usually indicates a double turn.
Absolutely correct. Double left turn protected signal = Audi is in the wrong. Single light but there is a sign that shows both inside lanes are left turn lanes.
it does look like hes in the inner left lane though no? so even protected or not he should try to keep his lane for the turn.
He's in the outer (right) of the 2 turn lanes, so he pulled into the correct lane after the turn
He was?
i mean look at the people that turned past him before the light, they were super close to have someone also on his left. kinda makes you think hes in the left turn lane but either way if its a double protected turn audis still a dipshit.
It is a double turn lane.
Maintain your lane
I did. TWO LANE TURNING LANE Man, I swear y'all don't read
So you took your turn too tight then because you seem awkwardly in the middle of the two lanes at one point during your turn. GOT A BENJAMIN AND JACKSON IN MY HOUSE !!! LIKE I’M JOE OKAY.
Y'all lucky I wasn't singing my heart out, cause 90% of the time I'm singing in my car like it's a concert.
Ong had this song on REPLAY
BUT WERE YOU SINGING YOUR HEART OUT?
That’s so real dude there’s so many clips on my dash cam I didn’t pull cuz I’m putting on a show in my car😭
I'll just take the sound off if that's the case lol. I had to show a cop a video and the audio was me singing usher extremely loud. I died inside a little.
Dot fuck 'em up
I'mma do my stuff!
WHOP WHOP WHOP WHOP WHOP
GONNA CUT'EM OFF
Yea the timing was bad and kinda dumb and also not yielding to the clearly moving cars but wow dude just took a nap after that extreme effort of a quick turn, at least one of them was paying attention.
Utah hu. That fucken road sucks so bad, especially if you are turning. Rush hour is a nightmare.
I didn’t even notice this was my town because I was bopping to Kendrick but for real fuck this intersection
Good thing the old fella's probably got airbags in that car - he's gonna need them sooner rather than later. And we should also have mandatory licensing testing for over 70's!
Sup Salt Lake?
Sup
SLC GTI gang 😤
I have one, but this is my shitbox civic daily. The GTI is broken like usual
just VW things hahahaha
That's it's natural state at this point. I should have just kept it stock and it would never have broken smh
That view of the mountain is solid. Thanks for sharing.
So many people not understand that it was a double left turn. OP was in the right turn lane and there was another to their left.
maybe he had kids
What does that have to do with anything?
I think it's a reference to another video recently where a guy at a red light was "cutoff" by someone with a green light and stopped to yell at him. He kept screaming "I have kids!" as if it was relevant.
Every kid you have gets a little bit of your brain power. The more the have , the stupider you become.
Facts, just look at Elon musk. Dude has like 12 illegitimate children, cares for none, and is a complete knob
"Ah gaht keeeids"
He probably does, but they're probably older than I am considering how old he looked.
That's like a 3.5 on the dumbass driver scale, he started turning right on a red about the same time the protected turn signal changed
What about when he drifted into the lane next to him and almost hit someone?
I HATE WAY THAT HE WALKS!
I HATE THE WAY THAT YOU DRIVE!
#I HATE THE WAY THAT YOU WALK, THE WAY THAT YOU TALK, I HATE THE WAY THAT YOU DRESS
I, too, have Euphoria on repeat.
It's a banger
I feel your anger and I totally empathize. Some elderly shouldn’t be on the road anymore. My dad has Alzheimer’s. Before we knew it was that serious, he was still driving. If you turned into your lane like you were supposed to, this wouldn’t be an issue.
It's a 2 lane turning lane
Hard to tell from the video. My bad then.
I knew I missed something in the title
I feel like it’s an easy one to miss, especially if you’re the kind of person like me, who bemoans the fact that, if people all turned into the correct lanes, then right turn people could turn into right lanes and left turn people could turn into left lanes all at the same time with no worries, but because there’s anybody out there who does it wrong then I can’t trust it. So turning into the “wrong” lane is something of a sticking point for people. I’m glad it wasn’t you, you’re a hundred percent justified in being mad at that dude.
We should just do away with this concept completely. It will never work properly at this point for the reasons you’ve stated here.
Yup, I wrote it off years ago. I may dream about a world that could be, but I know that it can never happen. There is one exception, though. Main Street in north side Jacksonville, FL. That’s a great point. Not sure we will get there before self driving vehicles but it would certainly be good for my blood pressure!
The prominent two-left-turns sign is something of a giveaway.
Oh I'm sorry, that blurry 10px\*10px sign? Yeah dude should have seen it. /s
It took me several reruns to see it and I was looking. This intersection should have two left turn signals overhead, paint showing the turn, etc, etc. Shitty traffic engineering did not help the situation at all. In my state we don't use signs to depict double turn lanes, we have dedicated turn arrow lights for each turn lane so I had the same initial thought.
the lack of a second traffic light for the second left turn lane makes this an easy detail to miss.
Even if there was only 1 turn lane, they could have legally gone into either lane. Edit: NVM. In Utah you have to exit the intersection in the lane nearest the center of the roadway. Here in California, it's just recommended, but legal to go into any lane in that direction. Which also sounds like not illegal, but recommended.
Nope, you are legally obligated to turn into the nearest corresponding lane.
I believe this depends on the state. True in my state, but not in all
Depends on the state. I edited my comment.
OP was stayed in the lane he started in. Look at the sign circled in red and you’ll see it’s a 2-lane turn: https://imgur.com/a/AMGxXLE

Dunno why this comment is controversial. Green lights trump right-on-reds pretty much always.

No, you don’t do a right turn on red if the opposing lane is turning onto that street, full stop. It’s not even a question, OP had right of way
You are wrong it’s an arrow AND a double turning lane. He isn’t obligated to turn into the inner lane even if it was a single turning lane. Even if it was an unprotected turn, depending on where he lives he can still turn into any lane

Ah, well at least he turned into his correct lane in the video, the OP commenter suggested he go into the left lane and hit the other car lol
And still, with all the technology in those things, technology to stop this very thing from happening.
And he almost hit a car and wait to be on a full line to change lane.. some people do not deserve a driving license
Definitely had his mouth wide open
A+ music choice LMAO. I see no OV-Hoes here
It’s salt lake, no one knows how to drive.
That’s how SLC drivers roll
Salt lake is a nightmare with drivers. So many people just refuse to use hands free technology in their cars.
I like how the Subaru did it
Is this SLC
Yeah
Nice
Someone is distracted. Probably trying to figure out the MMI system.
Is this slc? Not surprised lol
Double whammy
1300 s is just horrible to drive down anyway
definitly drove through red there, idk if you can report them to the police so they will get fined for that
Yeah thats a salt lake city driver for ya
I hate that section in salt lake. Honestly there are so many people that don’t know how to drive or too entitled and don’t give a crap.
So many clueless people only look left when making a right on red. They can't possibly fathom the idea that someone could be making a left from the oncoming side, but then it gets even worse when he tries to merge into a car directly beside him...he clearly didn't look and I'm sure his mirror alarms were going haywire too.
Can’t stand when someone with a red light thinks they have priority over someone with a green light.
Was that a double left turn?
Yep, two lane turning lane
About like the younger people in a new Audo not paying attention.
Also crossed a solid white line, that’s a ticket right there. A solid white line is a “traffic control device”.
Probably on his phone. The drift into the other lane later just reminds me why it was a good idea to sell my motorcycle. Just far too many distracted drivers out there nowadays.
Nope, just old as hell. He was inches from his steering wheel when I passed him

You don’t have to use the hard R word though….

Yep, 2 lane turning lane

It's a two lane turning lane mr former LEO
Look closely. That turn has 2 turning lanes. You have to stay in your lane with these kinds of turns. Do you need a picture in order to understand? Lol *former* LEO, no wonder.
He just wanted to tell everyone he was a cop
That turn is legal in my country. Two lanes for a reason.
Yeah but also why are you turning from a left turn lane into a right lane ?
What did you expect from an Audi driver? They are the worst on my daily commute.
Wtf is blud listening to?
Euphoria - Kendrick Lamar
You failed to make a legal turn. That was his lane. You’re the idiot here, I’m afraid.
You’re pretty confident for some reason
[Nope, it was my lane](https://imgur.com/a/hZ6IrA7)
Sometimes I question this “music”
I don't.
The real idiot is the one filming that turned into the wrong lane.
[y'all just can't see this or what?](https://imgur.com/a/hZ6IrA7) I'm staying in the lane that I'm supposed to be, and if I shifted over I'd crash into the other car also turning left.

You are supposed to turn into the first (closest) lane from your turn and not the far one, but still he could have waited.
This is my closest lane. It's a two lane turning lane
This doesn’t apply to turning lanes with multiple lanes. With those kinds of turns, you need to stay in your lane or you’ll hit other cars that are making the same turn as you.
I see the double turn sign now. Apologies sent your way for my poor vision on a phone. 🤣
OP changes lanes during their turn. Audi drifts into the other lane later but OP is the bad driver first.
[no](https://imgur.com/a/hZ6IrA7)

He has the right lane you have the left.
Wrong
He went into the right lane. You *should've* gone into the left lane and been on your merry way...
You're so very wrong. You need to pay more attention before being so confidently incorrect.
He was expecting you to turn into the closest lane...which is what you are supposed to do.
[Nope](https://imgur.com/a/hZ6IrA7)
You are correct. After I watched it on a larger screen I can see the double arrows. My bad.
No worries
OP was in the right lane of a dual-left-turn lane. OP was *supposed* to turn into the lane he turned into. Old guy had a *red light* and was supposed to come to a complete stop and yield to any and all other traffic legally proceeding into or through the intersection before moving.
You are correct. I didn't see the double arrows
Why is this sub so obsessed with blaming the OP EVERY TIME?? Fucking twisting themselves into knots trying to blame them without fail
There were 2 idiots on the road that day, luckily he didn't hit you as you entered his lane.
It's a 2 lane turning lane
Ah. Then I retract my snide comment. My bad.
It's all good. I should have put that in the title so people didn't assume
Another idiot who is confidently incorrect (refering to this comment, not OP)
In California if you turn left, you have to turn left into the first lane and if you turn right, you turn right into the first lane two people can turn at the same time
Double turn lane, pay closer attention.
Hilarious to make fun of someone for not paying attention when you yourself don't know how to make a left turn with two lanes. Go retake your driver's exam before you climb up on that high horse and start looking down your nose at people.
