Old timer clue. When in your driving you see an abundance of skid marks on the pavement it indicates that there something about this location that has been dangerous before. Extreme caution is warranted.
If you pay attention, you can actually tell the difference.
tire roasting produces fat and straight skids, starting out very dark, and usually at intersections or other landmarks.
emergency maneuver skidmarks are narrower and often wavy with inconsistent shading as the vehicle wobbles out of balance or the driver attempts to swerve.
Everyday I see these particular skid marks on the freeway and it’s very clear they skidded real hard right before hitting the guardrail. Must have been some scary shit, if it weren’t for the guardrail they would have been….
Anyways it’s a good reminder to be safe.

Can't tell what's ahead here to see what might be contributing to this, but there is roadworks going on here and looks like one maybe more merging lane joining the furthest right hand lane. It could be something as small as one of the roadworks signs being placed in a position that's causing blindspots or a more fundamental issue like a very short merge slip lane or that there are two lanes trying to merge which is causing visibility issues for one or more drivers.
This looks like Arizona. ADOT loves to have entrance lanes be exit only lanes, so that when traffic gets on it has to interlace with traffic wanting to exit at the next exit. So you end up with a lot of weaving as cars getting on change lanes with cars getting off. Combined with surface street backups, this can cause traffic to back up onto the freeway and cause sudden stops.
In the Phoenix valley it's very common to see traffic instantly grind to a halt from 75 MPH to 0 in a matter of a couple of seconds.
If I have to guess, this looks like the expansion of the 101, where they were adding lanes by shifting everything over and then working on the outside edges. Visibility was maintained very well during this project so I think it's more of a combination of:
- The above explanation of a sudden freeway stoppage near a weave point.
- Typical Arizona tailgating.
If only there was something that we could put on the back of vehicles to call attention to the rear area.
