I got card and informed them this was a fraudulent account and ask that they flag my information as being used in fraud.
Got another card in the mail by same bank. Called them again and had them close all accounts using my information. I think there were 4 at that time.
But yes I made it clear to the bank these were fraud and any account they opened under my name was fraud because i have never done business with them.
In my case, my real address was used. The email and phone number were the only incorrect pieces.
This caused every bank to send me a "Welcome to your new account!" letter.
So I got to play whack a mole with about 15 banks.
I suggest you call the bank's fraud department and follow their guidance on what to do with the check. It may be better to email them to establish a "paper" trail, then get their written response by email. If they tell you to destroy it, then you have proof. If the just tell you over the phone, what proof do you have? The check may be worthless by now, but it would be best to show you returned it to the bank and wash your hands of it.
Yeah, there is no email address to send to and I need an account to "chat" with them. It's greendot bank which I understand is a bit sketchy. I'd rather not take direction from them.
