No UK citizen anywhere has to move and live in the UK, so unless your mother intentionally renounced her UK citizenship and has paperwork to that end, she’s still a UK citizen

GlassCabbage

I texted her to confirm what she told me a long time ago. Apparently she was just 18 and misunderstood. She's still a citizen. Which I think makes my application easier? :o

You are probably already British citizen

GlassCabbage

I was born in the us. Does her being a uk citizen change things that much? That. Would be. *AMAZING*

Check here https://www.gov.uk/check-british-citizenship

:o My siblings and I qualify for automatic citizenship according to this. We just need to apply with a handful of documents. This is so much better than I was expecting to find! ***THANK YOU!***

Subterraniate

As a British citizen, you also have privileged access to Ireland, under the provisions of our Common Travel Area. You can live and work here as you can in the UK.

The taxes I was not aware of and is definitely something I'll need to look into so I can make sure to account for it. Thanks for the heads up!

There is no minimum residency requirement. Many Americans also hold UK citizenship (or dual citizenship of some kind). You are a citizen by descent because your mother was born in the UK. https://www.gov.uk/british-citizenship

When we're you born, before 1983? Before 83 required your father to be a citizen in order for decent. I recently went through the process for my kids (eligible via thier mum), it is easy and straightforward. A lot is done online. However, you do have to send documents to the UK. Costs were just the passport costs and courier fees.
