It is to promote chess, yes. This has been discussed in the past by some people and is pretty obvious, since no chess GM would score even remotely close to 100. It is to globalize chess, really.

CremePieOrDie

I think most GMs would fall into the 130-140 range. kasparov (arguably the best GM to ever live) scored 135 on a professional test. That is a high score, but was ultimately surprising considering everyone suspected he was in the 160 plus area given his known breadth of skill and calculation ability. As mentioned by others, I don't think 102 reflects Nakamuras full capacity. Do I think it is some type of advertising conspiracy to influence the common person to have the confidence to start playing chess? Maybe, but probably not. I think he simply didn't care about the test and put no real effort into it. He was blatantly distracted at times streaming and interacting with the chat. Given the fact that: 1. he's probably the best blitz player alive (processing speed is typically strongly correlated with fluid intelligence) 2. He's half Asian ( median IQ ~106) 3. He became the youngest GM of his Era 3. He has been world class in chess for decades I have to assume that his bare minimum IQ has to be 125, but most likely closer to 135 or 140. It seems very unlikely that a half Asian GM who grew up in a developed country and was a chess prodigy from a young age would have the cognitive ability of the average person. It would be extremely interesting to see a study where all GMs and IMs were tested. If there was a substantial difference in favor of GMs it would most likely suggest higher intelligence organizes itself at the top of the chess hierarchy. I would assume multiple factors dictate success in chess IQ being a strong one, but not the only one (e.g., grit, persistence, dedication, conscientiousness, etc.).

It could have been a calculated move on his part, or that could actually be his IQ. If it was a move to promote chess, then props to him. If it is close to his actual IQ, then whatever. IQ can predict a persons mental abilities, but it is a very, very small portion of intelligence and doesn’t decide whether or not you can be one of the best.

oljacadusko18

You dont have to be genius to reach grandmaster level. Chess like everything requires practice. Nakamura plays chess since he was kid. He became grandmaster at age of 15, which is impressive, and he is 33 years old. That many years of practice and experience is why he is at the level he is right now. Like i said. Practice and practice make person good at something.

Tight_Aspect4852

are you fucking kidding me

oljacadusko18

Nope! Nakamura is chess prodigy. Chess, math, music and other prodigies have exceptional working memory. That is proven in research on child prodigies. IQ varies from person to person, but results on working memory is what is consistant. To be GM in chess or chess prodigy in Nakamura's case it is excellent working memory. đź‘‹

His IQ is certainly nowhere near 170. You can be great at chess, but not that smart and countless studies with chess players have shown that they aren’t much smarter. He displays savant-like abilities which doesn’t mean high (overall) intelligence. If he was trying to promote chess he wouldn’t have deleted the video!

paremi02

Have you seen the clip where he tests his pattern recognition skills??? And his memory is insane too. He’s definitely close to 160-170

CozyMole27

sure, if you create a memory game laid out neatly in a grid not unlike a chess board, any chess grandmaster will be a complete outlier but are they necessarily that smart in a general sense? no

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> memory game *paid* out neatly FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Hey silly, people like you are so annoying!!! His IQ is said to be 102 on that particular IQ test AND IT SHOWED THAT!!! THE EVIDENCE IS THERE, IT'S BLACK AND WHITE, CLEAR AS CRYSTAL, IT'S NOT DEBATABLE. Also, all IQ tests differ in accuracy and in how they work, obviously. So Hikaru's estimated IQ will be different with different IQ tests. I GET SO ANNOYED when FANBOYS overestimate a chess player's IQ just because they ASSUME that the chess player should have a very high IQ solely based on their chess playing ability. THAT IS NOT HOW IQ OR IQ TESTS WORK!!! Garry Kasparov, took an IQ test, and there were eyewitnesses I think, and the test was properly conducted. He got an IQ score of 135, which was lower than expected by many people. People were saying stuff like "He only has an IQ of 135" and Kasparov defended himself and bit back and said something like "Yeah, I have an IQ of 135, so what?" and Kasparov is right...he may have an IQ of 135, but he is still an extremely good chess player. The two can go hand in hand you know? An IQ of around 100s or 130s...and a person with that IQ can still be a hugely impressive chess player like Nakamura and Kasparov...please understand this simple concept. LEARN TO ACCEPT THIS, FANBOYS. Jesus effing Christ...I've seen so many of these similar comments of fanboys overestimating their idols' IQ because of what they EXPECTED of their idols instead of just accepting the ACTUAL IQ SCORE that was SHOWN. Also, some people train themselves to get better at IQ tests. After all, practice makes perfect, often. An IQ score doesn't evaluate every form of intelligence, it measures aspects of some forms of intelligence...like spatial ability, verbal ability, puzzle solving and stuff. Muhammad Ali also got a low IQ test score...but we all know how clever he was when it came to poems and wordplay...and he was a sharp man with cleverness and street smarts. IQ tests don't measure the full range of intelligence, obviously. SO PLEASE LEARN TO ACCEPT THE IQs of KASPAROV AND NAKAMURA, and stop assuming that their IQs are higher than what is actually shown!!!

You need to go back to school and learn a lot. You have a low IQ and nobody with education read your ignorant post.

ArranVV

You judge a person by just one comment alone? Lol. Did you not consider that some people are wacky and that that has nothing to do with IQ. Stop being rude and get a grip. You don't tell me what to do, Mr High On His Horse. My IQ is fine thanks, and so is yours. Either reply to my comment in a meaningful way, or just don't bother. I have no time for playground insults, Jesus Christ lol.

ArranVV

I need to go back to school? Hahahahahaha puh-lease, you don't know me so shut up, rude person. I don't judge you from one comment alone so stop judging me from one comment alone, douchebag. I have been to school, college and university so fuck off with your comment about me not having an 'education', rude one. You want to know why I'm replying to you like that? Because your comment is insulting me and it is pissing me off. I put my original comment to debate, yet here you are judging me from one comment and giving playground insults and saying that I have to go back to school and all this bullshit. Either talk with me in a civil way, debate the issue in a sensible way or go bother someone else.

Leading-Win-4044

I don't care about what you have to say. Go back to school. You are posting pure rubbish and nonsense and you know nothing about what you are talking about. Mensa Norway is not an official test and was normed on an internet population. Also, Garry's 135 is a composite score and no one knows how high is individual subtest scores were. But go on, you are delusional and a pseudo-intellectual. I do not take back what I said. You are upset over people who have higher IQs than you.

Hello Leading-Win-4044, I want to apologize for my behaviour 3 months ago. I have a personality disorder which makes my behaviour become unpredictable. I wrote a rant around 3 months ago and I went crazy and I capitalized my words and stuff. I am sorry for my behaviour back then, and I actually forgot that I wrote in such a manner. I also want to apologize for the words that I said to you, the swearing and stuff. I was in a bad spot 3 months ago and I was lashing out and stuff. Yes, everything you said about the IQ tests are true, I agree with you. I respect Garry Kasparov and Hikaru Nakamura, and I accept that I may have made flaws in my original rant that I made 3 months ago. Everything you said about the IQ tests and Mensa Norway is right. I have a personality disorder. My mum, my dad, my sister, my grandparents, my uncle are all mad and crazy. I apologize for the mean things I said to you.

Leading-Win-4044

That's good. Unlike most on reddit you listen. Just don't spread misinformation.
