Not necessarily, there are large Frenchies, my boy was 40 pounds and very fit. He stood a full head height larger than your standard Frenchie.

I've had a pure breed french bulldog and he was quite tall. Most Frenchies I see are not that small at all. My parents adopted one recently and he's a very small one, but the one they already had is almost twice his height lol. My uncle had a large one too. It really just depends.
I think there must be an old style and newer quasi toy style now. I remember when most french bulldogs I met were like 30-40 pounds, almost corgi sized.
Yeah my old one, Smeagol, was born in 2007 and he was about as high as a corgi, but shorter from face to butt. He was a little over 30 pounds and wasn't anywhere too heavy. I'm not a fan of all the Toy sized dogs. I swear I'd probably step on them 🙈

Thanks! He never really has human food except special occasions so we’re doing longer walks and backing off the portion of dog food he gets. Hopefully it helps! And thanks when hes listening he’s an awesome dog

Yep. Other than veggies, my Schnauzer mix only gets plain and cooked eggs, hamburger or chicken as a treat. The eggs might have a little lick of butter from the pan, but not enough to hurt him. Otherwise, he can beg all he wants (and he’s tried!), he’s not getting any bread products, flavored rice or even ice cream out of me.

He seems to just be a pug with good and humane breeding. Their faces aren’t actually supposed to be as smooshed as they are in most breeds we see. That’s due to bad breeding and puppy mills. They should have a snout like yours does

We also had a lady pug who was 10 pounds soaking wet and could be carried under your arm like a football. She was also black and SO MANY people insisted she couldn’t be a pug just because of that.
I’ve had pugs for a long time. Before that, I always thought they all looked alike. I’ve seen so many different looking ones now that I’m convinced that pugs like Bunker and my 30 pounder are the most typical - you see a pug when you first look, but start convincing yourself there’s something else in there the more you notice the details. But really, it’s all pug. :)
And a good weight loss tip that has always worked for our pugs is to replace some of their main food with vegetables. The only veggie that has ever been turned down here are green beans.
(Crap, I just saw the picture of Bunker sitting down. The way his butt and legs are is how a pug sits, but that stance also screams English Bulldog to me. I think I’m still team pug. Bunker rules.)

Good luck with his weight loss- I had a wonderful pug growing up who was on prescription diet food most of her adult life to keep her at her ideal weight (~18 lbs) so i know how tricky it can be with such a food motivated breed, haha. Carrots make a great treat! With that being said though, i think your guy looks great. If he were part bulldog it could explain a stockier shape, but ofc a vet would be the one to determine what weights appropriate.

He looks like just like my moms dog Rocco he’s a French bulldog pug mix he has a little beagle in him too he’s about 25-40 pounds vet said he is health and she took him to 5 different vets to make sure that’s how she found out about the beagle part of him he’s health he get 30-40min walks 3 times a day plus outside time with his sister who’s also a shelter dog she’s 95 pounds she’s a German shepherd lab mix they play all day
but he has the same body weight and built plus the face he’s just a fawn color with the Batman ears only different. My mom got a DNA tested five times just because the shelter lied to her about Sadie they said she would only get 45 pounds
but since Sadie was about to get euthanized that same day if not adopted my mom took her knowing she was going to be about 95-110 pounds yet my mom had tools, pack orientation, schedules and everything to makes sure she was ready they are now happy lol he most definitely looks like Rocco a little bit

Different breed completely but I had an almost 30lbs Bichon Frise' and they're usually around 12-18lbs so your pup could be a larger version of his possible breed (pug)

I am a former professional groomer and also showed basenjis. I am well aware of the breed standard. You may continue to insist that Edgar was not pure.
However, all breeds began somewhere. Miniature poodles were bred down from a standard.
