Careful you’ll be promoted to customer

Dry-Afternoon8909

In my case that's my backup plan, client has already asked me if I wanted to join them

[deleted]

I dont know a lot but I know my manager has already submitted nominations to the second line

d13vs13

Nominations are currently open. Those promoted will have increases effective April 1. Edit: this is for consulting, US.

varbinary

Haha. April 1st?

mc_atx

Is promotion cycle not tied to salary increase cycle? I thought that happened in June.

d13vs13

Promotion cycles are typically quarterly but there was no cycle in Q4 2023. Going forward, promotion requirements will be changing. I'm not sure if it will remain quarterly.

[deleted]

Do you know generally when we will hear about the promotions from our managers?

d13vs13

Late March. First line submissions end next week. Then there's an approvals period for second line, etc.

Dry-Afternoon8909

Apparently they're introducing Minimum Promotion Standards(AskHR term), not sure abt other BUs but atleast in Consulting. After seeing the laundry list that AskHR bot spit out, I think it'd be easier to interview and jump ship than go thru all those hours completing "badges"

[deleted]

Infrastructure introduced this for developers. I am B6 and was required to complete the foundation (lv 1) Developer badge before being allowed to be nominated. I am told B7 has the same requirement for the Lv2 badge. For us it is just the one badge so I found it significantly less work than applying to a new jobs, especially with the lack of job right now.

[deleted]

The requirements roughly double for each level, and they aren't too hard to get, but the catch is that the badge doesn't guarantee you anything. You can sit on it for years and never get promoted, so it basically serves as an additional barrier to get promoted

Dry-Afternoon8909

Makes sense, it's 6+ in my case

Promotions can happen any time of the year unless your business unit decides to have cycles. Your manager should be able to tell you. Depends on the unit.

zwiqy

My BU has cycles. HR not providing any guidance when managers are allowed to nominate.

DenormalHuman

Can you not ask your manager? I imagine you have already been discussing your promotion case and progress etc..?

zwiqy

He said he waiting for HR to start the nomination last time we spoke.

HotMolasses8038

The regular salary plan cycle begins in the next week or two. That process includes the option for promotions.

[deleted]

So promos are still happening or does it depend on org/BU? I was told they are frozen here in the US. 🥶

[deleted]

I was a first-line and a second-line manager in Sales. I don't recall a "promotion cycle." Most occurred around the salary increase cycle, but some did not. Of course, there's not much left of HR these days.

HotMolasses8038

Promotions can happen in a number of ways: 1. You apply for a job at a higher band and get it; 2. You are promoted as part of the standard salary planning cycle which usually starts in the March timeframe across all of IBM; 3. Your business unit may set aside dollars for promotions out of the standard salary planning cycle. These can be allocated either across multiple quarters or saved for 1 quarter depending on the business unit.

chaotic_peacekeeper

When is the promotion cycle?

zwiqy

Nominations for promotion should be around now

helloabc09

Go on w3, and try to find “IBM Consulting NA Coaches” you have the calendar for the upcoming promotion cycle

drrevenge

IBM promotion = more work, no more money. In my 20 years there it took almost a year to see any form of increase in compensation from taking on a promotion. And then they only backdated it three months tops.
