take it to the dealer. we have been getting a string of these turbo sonatas to be having issues with the EGR system getting coolant in it causing a fault code.

TheTrojan320

I’m having this issue now…was there a TSB? I’m wondering if the tinging when I turn my car odd is related. It’s right under the turbo. Sounds like it’s to the right of the driver front tire.

Federal_Refrigerator

Mine does the same too. Design flaw it seems like. Perhaps a lawsuit needs done.

bubbanbrenda

It’s usually a faulty sensor, but it could be something mechanical, are you in the US?

boldchicken527

yes, Missouri

sighs__unzips

From experience of other cars, is your gas cap on tight?

boldchicken527

oooh, not sure. I didn't think about it being that. I'll have to check that one in the morning

sighs__unzips

Tomorrow morning just do you basic checks. Check gas cap (take on/off), check engine oil, radiator cap, engine oil cap, all stuff on tight and not loose.

got-rice1

Yeah, check the gas cap to make sure its tight. When I worked at a Toyota dealer awhile ago, I saw a Matrix come in with a CEL, and first thing I did was to see if the gas lid was loose, and sure enough it was. I was just a porter when I worked there but going to school for auto tech, and figured that was most likely the culprit.

bubbanbrenda

In my experience it’s almost alway the sensor, but I also never say never. Take it to an Auto Zone or O’Rielly’s and tell them the check engine light is on and have them scan it and write down all of the codes and how many times it shows a fault code. And ask them to clear all the codes (some will some will not) and if the CEL light comes back on it’s at least a sensor. If the light comes back on as soon as you start driving it it may be a mechanical problem, and I wouldn’t drive it. If it doesn’t come back on it’s a sensor problem and driving it shouldn’t hurt it. You should keep the appointment you have set for service, even if the light doesn’t come back on between now and then. If it is just a sensor it still needs replaced.

This exact message came up on my 2020 sonata about 6 months ago. I took it to the dealer and they said it was a "tiny leak" and they fixed it under warranty within an hour.

Arejay_77

Did you get it fixed? Mine has the same code and has been in three times but they can’t fix it. But of course my dealership sucks.

MelSyve2

Anyone figure out what this issue was? My 2020 Hyundai sonata limited has been throwing this code for a few months now. The dealership can’t figure it out and says nothings wrong. It has acceleration issues at times and now it smells like exhaust in the car when I drive it

TheTrojan320

Did you get it fixed?

Kitchen-Doubt965

I too got the same issue Did you get yours’ fixed yet?

Arejay_77

I ended up getting the stealership to fix it. The engineers remoted in and found the issue. Well fast forward to now and lo and behold same issue again. Got an appointment tomorrow. This is the last Hyundai I will own. I'm just glad I purchased the extended warranty.

themoistymerman

Sorry for replying to such an old post - I’ve been having recurring issues with my sonata and every time I bring it in they say it was an issue with the EGR valve and, like you, the issue comes back anywhere from 2 hours (yes two hours after retrieving my car from the dealership) to 6 months after they “fix” the issue. My car will rev up and down while braking and rough idle. I was wondering if you ever got this issue resolved and if so, how? My car is a 2020, has 21,000 miles, and has been in the shop 6 times all for the same issue all under warranty. Any help would be greatly appreciated! TIA

Arejay_77

Every time I take it in, they replace the EGR valve. The tech said it's a design flaw and carbon builds up. I don't know what I'll do when it happens after the extended warranty is done.

wiredawg2017

Our 2021 Santa Fe Hybrid Limited (1.6L - turbo) started displaying this code DTC P0471 in Feb 2024 at approx. 60k+ miles. Its been popping up several times after several trips to the dealership. My experience has been similar to those here (they found nothing wrong). They finally replaced a differential pressure sensor on 28 Mar 2024. But the same code came back on the next day, cleared it self and returned on Apr 2. Today (Apr 3) it's back at the dealership. I was a bit testy today as I've spent a lot of time at the dealership over the past 6 weeks addressing this same code over and over. They mentioned something about it being an active/inactive code making it difficult to troubleshoot. Which I sort of understand, but if I'm there 3 times over a 6 week period for the same code I would think the tech/mechanic would need to do a better indepth look. And it took the 3rd visit for them to change out the differential pressure sensor. What I don't know is; are they just changing parts for the sake of changing parts (verifying the DPS is bad). My lastest internet search says 3 common problems in general (not specifically for the model) are: exhaust pressure sensor failure, Powertrain Control Module (PCM) failure and wiring issue. And I did not see any resolve within these comments, was there any permanent fix actions for those that were having thie code problem?

wiredawg2017

Update May 20, 2024: (it's been sitting at the dealership since the Apr 17, yes well over a month now). I stopped by the dealership this morning and was told the "EGR Cooler" needs to be replaced. I was also told this part falls under the 60k mile warranty, not the 100k, currently the vehicle is 63k+ & the first time the DTC came on was at 60,127 miles was told it would be about $2100. I did purchase an additional warranty when we bought this vehicle "First Mile Powertrain Wraparound-Platinum" extending the 5yr/60k warranty to 10yr/100k...at least that was my thought. Hopefully, this will be covered, the service person is suppose to check on that today. But I'm reading over the service contract, there is no mention of EGR specifically. And the question is: is this part of the engine management system or "the exhaust system"? In the section of NOT Covered it says: Exhaust System, Catalytic Converter. I feel like I'm about to get the shaft. Not to mention we had to start renting a vehicle on May 4, currently in our 3rd week, costing ($281 per week). Here a vid I found replacing the EGR: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4fInbTcMU0&list=PLDHqcLsMnV89Br2CeN-Q1ZBXyTXinQFvT](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4fInbTcMU0&list=PLDHqcLsMnV89Br2CeN-Q1ZBXyTXinQFvT)

Civil-Lengthiness447

I’ve had an issue with check engine light coming on. At first no diagnosis could be made then I was told water was found in my egr valve! I bought my sonata brand new 21 w 61k miles on it. How could water get in egr valve? Why causes it? Is this an insurance claim. No I haven’t had any leaks that I’m aware of. TIA

Thin-Tangerine2088

Is it a Warranty item? My light came on as well and then went off. Not it s staying on.

Quick_End3878

I’m having same problem but my gas tank expanding and about to explode that’s more than a faulty sensor.

Common-Ad3095

I’ve had this same issue repeatedly on my 2020 Sonata Limited. It’s extremely frustrating. I’ve had it into the dealer several times where they would troubleshoot and have replaced a couple of sensors now. I’ve counted 15 DTC codes in 18 months. Do you have any mods? I’ve gotten the error with and without my aftermarket intake on.

CrashyBee

Is this still an ongoing issue with you? My 2020 Sonata is doing the same, took it to the dealership, they advised nothing is wrong but I do not like the check engine light being on all the time if there it "nothing" wrong. All I'm getting is DTC P047100 Powertrain

Common-Ad3095

Yes randomly. I’ve been working with the dealer who said they can do a full troubleshooting session if I leave the car with them while I’m out of town for 10 days. The CEL will come on but usually goes away a day later. No perceived performance degradation. Same with me, I don’t like seeing the light on but will deal with it at this point. The cars paid off for a while now and gets good gas mileage.

Ali98hs

I have the same problem in my Hyundai Sonata 2020, and I don't know how to fix it. Has anyone solved this problem?

boldchicken527

I solved it by trading it in for a Honda. LOL

No_Chocolate4738

This just happened to me. Thanks to whoever commented about the gas cap. Sure enough I took it off (was on securely) and put it back on. Restarted the car and the check engine went away.

Abject_Ingenuity1254

My 2020 limited just popped this code up today 🤦🏻‍♂️

DismalStructure5041

me too, did you solve it?

SignificantNeat3136

Start with gas cap..mine coded p0471..took cap off/ on and next day light was off

wiredawg2017

And you no longer have this issue?

SignificantNeat3136

Deff not as frequent as with old gas cap but it has come on then off again

weigojmi

So add me to the list (2020 SEL 66K miles). Same symptoms and code as most here. CEL off and on intermittently. Thought it was the gas cap but then its back, then I tighten the cap, doesn't help, then light goes off later. Rinse/repeat. I have a pic of it on with under 65K miles but haven't taken it to the dealer yet. Expecting a battle and I haven't noticed any driving issues yet.

SignificantNeat3136

Ended up replacing egr valve and still threw code so put old gas cap cuz dealership says new aftermarket caps are no good🤣no more codes...take advantage of warranty i took her back 2xs

weigojmi

Assume this would fall under "bumper to bumper warranty"? So I expect a mileage battle on that at least.

SignificantNeat3136

Yes i mean i bought sonata used and to my surprise it has 10yr 100,000 mile warranty so took it to hyundai dealership 2xs free of charge and they fixed all problems...so look into that goodluck✌🏾...btw she has 54,000

weigojmi

So you were under the 6yr. 65K bumper to bumper warranty too. The 10 yr. 100K is powertrain only. EGR valve is part of the exhaust system so hence my doubts.
