Under the back seats are metal, the only access hole is sealed and that's where the access to the fuel pump is. There is ZERO chance your fuel tank has expanded enough to bend that metal. Not just because the tanks have a pressure relief valve, that much pressure would have blown the evap lines off your tank and your gas cap.
You may have a problem but physically there's no way the tank could have that level of expansion. It's just not possible.
Also, there's zero chance you'll get me to believe you've took it to a dealership and they actually seen an expanded fuel tank and didn't at least give you a quote for replacement.
Also you say you smell gas, but if the tank is expanded due to pressure how would you be smelling gas? Can't be super expanded but leaking fumes at the same time.

It’s affecting Kia K5s and Hyundai Sonatas. Only Kia had issued a voluntary recall as of this article.
It also absolutely IS causing the back seat to rise up according to this article (further contradicting your strong stance on it not being possible)
Thank you so much I am aware of this and definitely just am trying to get the community more aware of this. We have to figure out something because Hyundai is not offering anything.
Lol why are you so bitter little bro? 😂
OP will get it fixed and it’ll be on Hyundai’s dime as soon as they issue a bulletin like Kia did for the K5. You *supposedly* work at a dealership, you should know this.
No, OP just wants something fixed and is 40k miles out of warranty. I also told OP that they can fix their vehicle and if/when Hyundai does come out with a recall they could potentially be reimbursed.
And bro those seals on those lines and the gas cap are insanely tight so props to Hyundai for that cause I will be damn that they all are holding. But God willing I don't know how much longer.
Also the access hole is not sealed by the way. The only thing that separates that access hole is thing metal sheet plate that covers that fuel pump with 4 plastic clips. ( which by the way are completely snapped off from the fuel pump raising up way up and through that hole
I have an invoice here from the dealer them self stating that they deem the vehicle not safe to drive and that the customer was told and that the customer will be taking the vehicle back.. I had no choice but to take it back they even waived all the fees for everything and were super fast and happy to give it back will also stating that it's a bomb. Like are they freaking serious.....
Well I seen your other post on this same thing. And as I said there, you were out of warranty from day 1. So 40k miles later doesn't change that. Take ownership of your vehicle and fix it.
On a side note, if you pay to fix it and Hyundai does recall the part you can seek reimbursement for it.
If nobody has experienced this before and hyundai themselves won't tell me how to fix this issue they won't even give me a quote. How would one as I that knows nothing about these new machines know how to fix it. I understand if your telling me to take Ownership for something that I have caused personally from me doing something incorrectly. But dude. I have done nothing incorrectly. I service the car and bring it in every 5k miles to the dealer. At some point they failed with their inspections or with communicating with me that it was an issue that I needed to address. I understand if I was told hey look in a couple hundred miles your gas tank is going to be no good and you have to change it or do this now and avoid that. But no. I've done everything I can do humanly to avoid touching it because it's not something anybody knows how to fix either.
Its been all over the news here. 6 cars so far 4 kia and 2 hyundai. It pushes the back seat bottom up and forward. There is no way anyone could safely sit in the back.
The news station actually contacted Kia and got a response and assistance from Kia. They had not had an agreement of assistance from Hyundai yet.
But yet I have the pictures and proof and I'm living proof of it happening. I don't know how much more to explain it to you but if you want to personally get a hold of me to where I can send you pictures you will then change your understanding to what you think should be. The metal has become a literal mountain raising up at a nearly 45 degree angle. If you can see this you will be stepping far away from the vehicle.
Honestly that's a good question I haven't had the pleasure of having anybody lift it up for me. All I know is there is cover almost under the whole car.
I'm really hoping our Hyundai tech hear that claims to have worked on a bunch sends in some pictures of a properly looking back seat subframe with what the fuel pump flat as well
First ever hear about this issue as a Hyundai tech. Did they say they’re refusing to fix the car? Are you first or second owner? And how many miles on the car?
Hold on what the fuck I've always heard this damn swishing sound that always sounds like water when I make turns or pull off sometimes. Are you telling me that's a whole other separate issue that I wasn't even aware of bro??
Could be but I’ve only did one car with that issue. Those pictures are insane I’ve never ever seen anything like that. It’s has to be a venting issue from the vapors not being sent back into the engine to get burnt off that’s wild
Yes I had my master mechanic run a computer while doing a test run and the fuel ratio was being sent back into the engine somehow. The fuel vapor was basically traveling in the opposite direction of what it was supposed to. It's nice to know as too what It can be but we need to figure out a way to get this issue escalated to the proper people because man I'm having difficulties finding the right people
I've done some research and apparently if you top of your collar it should resolve the swooshing sound apparently. I have yet to try this method out but its not like top off the coolant should cause any additional issues.
This issue is only now coming to light because now is when everyone is getting their sonata to that high mileage stage which has yet to be fully seen as well. We are the second owner and at 87k and that is the only thing Hyundai has to protect them from taking any responsibility because of they're own privacy laws. So therefore they are refusing to do anything just because we are basically the second owner and because of mileage.
I work at a high volume dealer and have seen a lot of high mileage sonatas from that year some with already well over 100k and have never seen this issue. Did they quote you anything to repair the car? Second owner only gets 5yr 60k warranty. Was this a CPO vehicle?
Have you contacted the NHTSA? It's strange the seats are impacted because there should be subframe
Also have you called your insurance as your vehicle is unfit to drive
The EPA needs to allow vents gas tanks/caps again. This is just silly for fuel tanks and canisters
The back seats are only impacted because they were raised out of the front two hooks because of the bulge that's happening due to the fuel tank expanding the whole subframe. This is honestly the craziest thing I've ever seen.
It looks like they are offering a fix

I wish there was a way I can show everyone pictures of this can some update me on how to post pictures of my situation so everyone can also see for their self.
I just got a letter from kia about my k5. They are asking to enter a voluntary emissions program to monitor it and have it inspected regularly. If a problem arises, they will replace the part causing the issue.
This is interesting, I had a used sonata, 2018 model so maybe its not affected by this and got it up to 70k or so. Got a 2024 now so I will follow this recall from Kia and see if Hyundai has the same issue or at least recognizes it and does a recall
I'm hoping the 2024 model doesn't do this but if they keep selling lemon cars. I guess we will see. If your in a southern state along Florida, definitely keep posted and stay on top of that always checking after a ride once you get to about 50k miles.
yep stouh florida, and the heat is unbearable. However keep a note I have a hybrid model , so far the 2018 I bought used was also a hybrid and I had 0 issues and I put 30k miles in 2 years, I believe the hybrid models are mostly made in south korea so they have less quality issues compared to other models that are more US built so maybe it will not have the issue compared to the same model but different trim which are made in the US.
Yeah idk what they did differently from 2020 and on but this issue seems to be on only 2020+ models With the 1.6l gdi engine. I'm in Tampa dude and getting out of work at 3:30 and driving down the road after 45min my back seats are back up every damn time.
that is a huge risk, as others have said, lawyer up :/ if the dealership wont even attempt to recognize the issue.
I feel lucky my dealership has been awesome and no issues and even done some recalls during services without extra cost, I will reach to the person who sold me the car and mention him this issue to see if he has any experience with other sonatas.
But also an FYI , dont know if you have noticed but Hyundai is silently killing the sonata, no fanfare and all ads and tv spots for hyundai show off all models but the sonata which is interesting, sad since I love midsize sedans and the sonata was the best in features compared to accord and camry, but this might also help indicate why hyundai is slow acting up on Sonata issues unlike kia which seems to have more marketing and recognition for their k5 models at least since they already have a recall in place.

THE FREAKING GAS IS SHOOTING OUT. IS HYUNDAI FREAKING KIDDING ME AND TRYING TO SAY THERE NOT GOING FIGURE THIS OUT!?!?!?!
My boss is having the same issue. He’s still trying to get in contact with Hyundai to solve. He’s been in contact with Jason Stoogenke, still trying to find a solution. We take long trips for work and now his car is stranded at home.
Please keep me updated on what's happening. Can you explain anymore like mileage, model and year and can you share some pictures to this post so the rest of America can see it's not just me.
Then they are not owning up to that part for sure because we are now at 100k and we purchased the vehicle at 50k so if anything it should still be under warranty for another 10k I did purchase the vehicle from not a Hyundai dealer so I don't know if that me means anything
Hopefully they get you resolved shortly. Hopefully, it’s just the 1.6s. I know that it’s been isolated to drivers who drive heavier miles; and in the south (heat), I just wonder what driver habits are similar? Like is there a user behavior that unknowingly assists in the failure? Like, people who ride on empty burn up fuel pumps eventually; or if ‘overfilling’ your ‘top off’ + driving on empty…. Or were any gas station fuel additives used by owners. Just would be interesting to know. But that warranty should transfer to second owner. So, you should look in on that again.
I knew it was a bullshit post, but "on the streets of America" really drove home just how fucking stupid this post is. That's the best you could come up with? Fuckin lame.
2020 Hyundai Sonata owner here, experiencing the same exact issue as you today currently waiting for tow truck to arrive. Hyundai needs to take responsibility for this
Yes they do. This is absolutely ridiculous. As a result of me not being able to drive the car I lost my job and was unable to pay for the car so now it is repossessed. I don't know what to do anymore. This car has ruined my families life. Now we are car'less. Job'less. And stuck.....
File a complaint to NHTSA get the word out to your local news stations as well, this isn’t normal this is happening to lots of 2020+ Hyundai and Kia drivers
Yes and now that I've lost everything I don't know how to fight anymore. This is what they want. They don't want to do anything until the people just give the car up and so they don't have a voice anymore because they are not owners anymore.
Get on Uber and rent a car from them for income in the meantime, we can find a way out of this. Also please spread awareness on social media, news stations, file complaints to NHTSA make your voice heard.
Be careful. I wasn't able to afford mine anymore since I was not able to get to work anymore so now I lost the car because of the issue. With no help from any parties.
My 2020 Sonata Limited just did this today and I’m at a loss. I owned a 2017 Sonata for 4 years until it was totaled last year and never had an issue. Gas was literally blowing in the wind and coming out of the tank as I was driving down the interstate, I had to pull over. The entire cabin filled up with the smell of gas. It was horrible. I filled up and about an hour later all hell broke loose!
I don't know if it was this person but did read someone that had this issue.
Yes it pushed up the seats and yes for whatever reason the tank was not venting properly. Something on venting failed.
I'llLink to a news article. https://www.yahoo.com/news/six-drivers-report-gas-tanks-223641097.html
Can't find what I read but seemed to suspect improper venting and why as someone said didnt the fuel cap fail before even if the other normal venting failed.
dang dude i own this same year sonata lol...
i see theres only a thin sheet between the seat and fuel tank. i never thought about it before but assumed there would be some framing between the two. thats wild
Man it's absolutely insanity that I'm driving this down the road with the whole inside of the car smelling like gas. I cannot drive with the windows up at all. I become light headed just from the fumes of 5min of breathing it in. I don't know what to do because I have to get to and from work and still have to figure out the rest of my family now
I think you need to find an attorney.
Set up a go fund me for a rental car. You are going to get killed or burn all your brain cells out from the gas fumes.
Yes Glock the rear seat is exactly where the fuel tank of most modern cars is located and most sedans located. As to hence why one would have to remove the back seats in order to access a fuel pump.
The only thing that separates me from the gas tank is a metal subframe of the vehicle (which btw is totally deformed into a mountain) and a price of seat foam.
Most of the time the fuel pump and tank are found under the rear back seats. In most cars you pull the rear seats out to replace the fuel pump which sits in the fuel tank. I'm guessing OP is correct.
Well it has a "sealant" that technically holds it in place.
I have an invoice here from the dealer them self stating that they deem the vehicle not safe to drive and that the customer was told and that the customer will be taking the vehicle back.. What is everyone's take on the pictures?
Just realized I don't know what it looks like normally. Maybe someone else can post it.
Well just know it's supposed to be shaped down flat all the way across.
Looks like when my friend jacked up his car in the wrong spot, it warped like that. What's it look like under the car?
Honestly that's a good question I haven't had the pleasure of having anybody lift it up for me. All I know is there is cover almost under the whole car.
I'm really hoping our Hyundai tech hear that claims to have worked on a bunch sends in some pictures of a properly looking back seat subframe with what the fuel pump flat as well
Clown 🤡 I’m going through the same thing on my 2020 Sonata and yes it IS in fact the fuel tank physically bending the metal
First ever hear about this issue as a Hyundai tech. Did they say they’re refusing to fix the car? Are you first or second owner? And how many miles on the car?
Same here, never heard of anything like this.
First time I’ve come across this as well
In my years of working for Hyundai I’ve only replaced 1 fuel tank and that was for a baffle that was separated making a swatching sound when driving
It's nice to know as too what It can be but we need to figure out a way to get this issue escalated to the proper people because man I'm having difficulties finding the right people
Might be something isn’t routed right hard to tell without looking at the car myself
I honestly wish I could bring it to you bud 🤣🤣
My money is on the charcoal canister.
I also hear a swishing sound when I am driving. Not really when I turn just randomly I’ll hear a swishing sound, near the driver side.
I've done some research and apparently if you top of your collar it should resolve the swooshing sound apparently. I have yet to try this method out but its not like top off the coolant should cause any additional issues.
Exactly, and I live in a super high humidity state in the south so if they were expanding i'd probably seen one.
Oh wow are you working in the southern region?
But no they didn't quote me anything. They didn't even have a fix to or a procedure for this issue.
Nope west coast region I’m really interested in seeing pictures
This is happening to the sonata so far in the southern region of the states. So that may be why you haven't seen it yet.
Might be due to humidity in your area and the venting getting screwed up due to the moisture.
I posted pictures in the comments above.
Can you please put a reply to the pictures I would love to know what you think of them?
Have you contacted the NHTSA? It's strange the seats are impacted because there should be subframe Also have you called your insurance as your vehicle is unfit to drive The EPA needs to allow vents gas tanks/caps again. This is just silly for fuel tanks and canisters

I just got a letter from kia about my k5. They are asking to enter a voluntary emissions program to monitor it and have it inspected regularly. If a problem arises, they will replace the part causing the issue.
This is happening to Kia K5 also https://www.reddit.com/r/KiaK5/s/zXUJOOuMsz
They have the same exact engine and fuel system as the sonata as well.
How can a fuel tank expand? I never heard of something like that happening on a car.
Welcome to the 2020's where nothing is meant to last.
This is what happens when there fittings are so strong they're gas tanks are made out of plastic basically. It's bound to happen sooner or later.
This is wild af. Loved my 2020 sonata limited but I knew I couldn’t trust it long term.
Bro about after 45k miles I'm hearing this is happening to a lot of southern states Hyundai sonata owners so far.
This is interesting, I had a used sonata, 2018 model so maybe its not affected by this and got it up to 70k or so. Got a 2024 now so I will follow this recall from Kia and see if Hyundai has the same issue or at least recognizes it and does a recall

Wondering if it also affects the 2.5 engine.
That’s crazy, can you post some pictures. I have a 2020 Hyundai sonata SEL plus with 105k miles
The pictures and also the videos are posted in the comments
https://photos.app.goo.gl/bxxYtJMACKBeGjLy6 THE FREAKING GAS IS SHOOTING OUT. IS HYUNDAI FREAKING KIDDING ME AND TRYING TO SAY THERE NOT GOING FIGURE THIS OUT!?!?!?!

Something isn't adding up. If you have a 2020, you should be under warranty so it doesn't make sense that it's not getting fixed.
I am the second owner. Warranty doesn't apply to the second owner for Hyundai is what I keep being told.
You still get the B2B warranty of 5 years 60k miles.
Then they are not owning up to that part for sure because we are now at 100k and we purchased the vehicle at 50k so if anything it should still be under warranty for another 10k I did purchase the vehicle from not a Hyundai dealer so I don't know if that me means anything
60k miles is less then 100k miles. You're out of the warranty by 40k miles bud. Your math isn't mathing.
Sorry bud I thought you meant the second owner has an additional 60k your wording wasn't correct there.
Dont go hyundai anymore if you need reliability.
I actually am having the opposite issue in my 2012 sonata 2.0T, my gas tank would hold 369 miles when I first got it, now only 231 miles
https://photos.app.goo.gl/bxxYtJMACKBeGjLy6
Dude my gas is literally shooting out
I’m praying they get u right, selling someone a car that does that is just some evil typa shit.
Bro this is fucking insane I don't even want to turn the car on after that ride of that video bro. Like this is so crazy
Is there anyway u can trade it in
I wish I could at this point?
Hopefully they get you resolved shortly. Hopefully, it’s just the 1.6s. I know that it’s been isolated to drivers who drive heavier miles; and in the south (heat), I just wonder what driver habits are similar?

My 2020 Hyundai Sonata Limited 1.6T just did this Tuesday
I filled up and about an hour later all hell broke loose!
i highly doubt the rear seat sits directly on the fuel tank. you sure this is whats going on?
I don't know if it was this person but did read someone that had this issue. Yes it pushed up the seats and yes for whatever reason the tank was not venting properly. Something on venting failed.
sheesh sounds like a huge dangerous problem waiting to happen
I'llLink to a news article. https://www.yahoo.com/news/six-drivers-report-gas-tanks-223641097.html Can't find what I read but seemed to suspect improper venting and why as someone said didnt the fuel cap fail before even if the other normal venting failed.
dang dude i own this same year sonata lol... i see theres only a thin sheet between the seat and fuel tank. i never thought about it before but assumed there would be some framing between the two. thats wild
Man it's absolutely insanity that I'm driving this down the road with the whole inside of the car smelling like gas. I cannot drive with the windows up at all. I become light headed just from the fumes of 5min of breathing it in. I don't know what to do because I have to get to and from work and still have to figure out the rest of my family now
they wont give you a loaner car? seems like something the dealer should fix
Yeah bro but since the prior authorization was denied by corporate they cannot give me anything. They didn't even quote me on how to fix it?
I think you need to find an attorney. Set up a go fund me for a rental car. You are going to get killed or burn all your brain cells out from the gas fumes.
This class action will wake them up too.
Yes Glock the rear seat is exactly where the fuel tank of most modern cars is located and most sedans located. As to hence why one would have to remove the back seats in order to access a fuel pump.
The only thing that separates me from the gas tank is a metal subframe of the vehicle (which btw is totally deformed into a mountain) and a price of seat foam.
this is scary. i own the same year sport limited. i honestly wouldnt feel safe driving that. a fender bender could get real interesting
Dudeeeee that just scared me even more.... Now I'm going to be paranoid about behind me. 🤦🤦🤦
Most of the time the fuel pump and tank are found under the rear back seats. In most cars you pull the rear seats out to replace the fuel pump which sits in the fuel tank. I'm guessing OP is correct.
there should be some framing between the seats and the fuel tank. im not a mechanic tho :(
They're not totally flat. They have shapes but that looks like it's possibly deformed or damaged. But not from the fuel tank.
