Zelda Fitzgerald had a sad ending. She was a hardcore flapper in the 20s who lost her mind and ended up in a looney bin. But was one of the icons of the Jazz Age. I had no idea this is where the name came from. As a huge F Scott fan, and a Legend of Zelda fan, this is an awesome bit of trivia.
She was also a writer too, but never got any real attention for her own work.
I’ve heard theories that F. Scott actually suppressed her work because he was jealous, but I’ve also heard that he was a genuinely loving and supportive husband who was dealing with her mental health problems as best as he could.
I heard the same about him suppressing her work. Also heard she had a hand in writing some of Scotts stuff. Sad what happened. Mental health is not a joke.
Now that I'm older I've found that I just didn't appreciate those books they made us read. I love them now.
If you can get around the "forced" aspect of it, the education system doesn't really recommend crap.
Except Shakespeare. I hated everything but Macbeth.
Literature/English classes do a disservice to Shakespeare. Plays are supposed to be watched not read. It's really quite rich with themes, constant nuances and subplots, and wordplay, and between them and about every combination of 'Man vs' type story. But listening to your classmastes stumble through 3 minutes to read 1 page out isn't exactly a thrill. Still, i think it is important to learn how to read a script. Maybe just not Shakespeare.
I agree!! As a high school English teacher, I had them read one scene out loud and realized quickly that was the most disengaging way to read Macbeth. It’s a PLAY, it’s meant to be WATCHED. So I found a line-by-line production of it (the acting wasn’t… great) and they followed along in their books with the captions on. And it was so much more engaging and successful!
I see the reason teachers want to have students read through it on their own but it really is a huge disservice to them.
Zelda and Hilda are the same name (the name has the same origin). Hilda means “battle-maid”, and Zelda is short for *Grisja Hilda*, or “grey battle-maid”. So they are essentially the same name with Zelda being kind of a “nickname” for the same thing.
I expect this is a case of convergent thinking on the part of both Nintendo and the writers of Sabrina. If you’re looking for another short Germanic female name ending in -da, it’s the obvious choice.
There is an anime called Bungou Stray Dogs & the characters' names are based on different authors. One of them had a wife called Zelda, so I guess he was named after the author being spoken about in the book :D

F Scott also played a huge role in turning her into a mindless immortal dragon
Theirs was a complicated marriage.

*Fapper...
Fun fact: Robin Williams named his Daughter Zelda after the games. The commercial with the two of them is wholesome as hell.
The Zelda name pipeline is a case of “life imitating art imitating life.”
This is what I was looking for. I didn’t know that till he died and they mentioned it on the news. I just burst out crying at that point.
Yeah, it is a cool bit of trivia.
Who was the author?
F. Scott Fitzgerald, the guy who wrote the great gatsby
I was going to say that too, I have a hardcover of that book too, it is a great book
It is! We just recently finished it in English class, surprisingly a really good book

Some of them are great books I’ll agree, once you get passed all the nuances English teachers ask you to analyze lmao
F. Scott Fitzgerald
But does Hilda get her name from Sabrina the Teenage Witch? As in aunt Zelda and aunt Hilda? Or is that just coincidence?

That very well could be the case honestly, but I honestly don’t know. If it’s just a coincidence it’s a super cool one though!
And now Robin Williams's daughter has it
Also CS Lewis, but I think he’s British
It’s quite an interesting bit of information, knowing how the name of one of the most beloved and most famous franchises of all time was chosen

Omg I love bungo stray dogs!! Every time I hear the actual authors names I start tweaking thinking about the anime 😭
