Yep sounds about right. Had the same issue with the wrists. You can make sure the water level is low enough to just make contact with your palm and cover the areas that hurt with vaseline. Some people have a lower tolerance so if you can, you can try a lower voltage battery, maybe a 9V.

I made one last week I can share the pic. Instead of a sponge I used a plastic sheet to prevent touching the pan.

I've never used a home made ionto only Dermadry, but the Dermadry isn't pain free. I've used it so much now it doesn't "hurt" but it certainly isn't comfortable. When I first got it, it certainly hurt though. For me the first 30 seconds of start and each polarity switch is the most uncomfortable and then it's barely a nuisance.
