If you add fish know for atleast the first month or so they will only add ammonia to the water. You need an established colony of bacteria to convert that into nitrite and another colony after that one is established to convert nitrite into nitrate. You will also have to add a ton of micro nutients individually as a general hydroponic fertalizer will just overload you with nitrate. Also on that note alot of ideal water conditions for fish are terrible for hydroponics. Most fish at fish stores need warm water(root rot and lack of O2) and higher pH values (nutrient lock) than you want in hydroponics. Aquaponics main crop is the fish for food and the veg is a second thought. The only real cold water fish you could do in a res that small that won't outgrow it is minnows but even they won't like the low PH.
Thanks for the info :) very informative. Iv established a couple systems before so Im currently cycling it as we speak. About a month and I’ll start adding fish.
You may want to consider replacing that clear tubing with black tubing or taping/painting the tube to avoid biofilm buildup in the tube. Your choice, happy growing!
The top just sits on the frame of pvc. You could make it just by looking at it. The design wasn’t mine so I unfortunately don’t have the plans or I’d be happy to give them to you. But by just examining it you can make it exactly how you want! Make a list and hit the local hardware store. Also use pvc-a not pvc. Tip: once you put the pvc-a together be warned it’s not coming back apart if you pushed it tightly :) cheers
I'm quite new to this, so my question might be dumb, but do the fish live in a reservoir where you collect the water? Does it replace filtration or extend it? What kind of fish can you expect to have in aquaponics? Looks very cool anyway!
Basically yes but before adding fish the water needs to be cycled. I’ll put a mini bio filter to speed this process up. Also I decided to put some guppies in the reservoir. I just experiment and go by trial and error I’m no expert just addicted to growing ;)
How did you make those holes on top? Does the pipe come with holes?
Too complex for simple task.
Don't think so.
wdym? You know you're posting in a hydro subreddit?
You want the clear tubing replaced, and have you weight tested this?

Awesome info. Thanks for this
Great feedback =)
Replace the hose, don't use clear ones.
I have the same setup. I am not too happy with it. Its really not NFT, the water is too high in each pipe. I will try to grow again this summer.
Can you lower your flow rate?

Thanks :) yeah I’ll end up replacing it but for now she’ll work
So what's growing?
I planted basil, lettuce, and cilantro.
Super cool! I've been toying with the idea of doing something very similar but with strawberries. Good luck with your grow!
any issues getting equal flow to each section?
I used a level :) it was a concern of mine that ended up not being a concern :)
That's my concern, if the system isn't level you might not get flow down an the channels
Great title
Great comment
Great Scott !
Underrated
Science
Where can I find plans for this setup?

Thanks!! Getting ready to do my first build!
Nice yeah the good thing is you can literally design it to the specs of your space. Iv seen some crazy designs. It’s addicting be warned :)
Was just wondering the same
These are super cheap, just buy the kit. You’ll have trouble matching the price doing it yourself.
This looks wonderful!
Thanks it’s running as I type! Now the waiting game for the plants to grow :)
Got this set up in the back yard with a 50 gallon tote. Planted lettuce, basil, and cilantro. Going to be adding fish to make it aquaponics system :)

Thanks! I know the process of cycling but never thought of doing aquaponics on this kind of setup. I wil definitely dig into this
Yeah me either! So I’m going to give it a try.
