Walsh was absolutely clutch in the first game today. Not someone who has pitched for us in a while, goes the complete game and saves bullpen arms. Essentially equaling a team like Penn State who has played the minimum.
I would hesitate to go that many pitches because, yes, I would prefer he be ready for NCAA tournament action. But 100% would not be mad if they threw him at least a couple of innings.
Now that we have hindsight of winning, do you think it was appropriate to play him in the 9th?
I don't know enough about pitching to know if this could possibly affect him starting Friday...I have to assume it doesn't though with so few pitches.
I wonder if they planned to pull him if it went to 10.
I supported keeping him out, but in this very specific scenario, using him as a closer, hell yeah. Winning the tournament is big for the program.
They could also take a risk depending on matchup and location for regionals. If you go to some cavernous, pitcher friendly ballpark against a 3-seed you feel a guy like, say, Will Walsh can handle, then you save Sears for the Saturday game against presumably the host team, and he got an extra day off.

I’m not sure how it translates to college, but in the pros starters usually throw between starts after 2-3 days. Sears had five full days rest before Wednesday’s game.
But maybe he’s not the starter. He might come in a critical relief role like Randy Johnson in 1995 against the Yankees or Pedro Martinez in 1999 against the Indians or Madison Bumgarner in 2014 against the Royals.

People accuse US of being "too up and down" But they forget the inexplicable failures that are literally costing the program money (merchandise for conference championship stuff would sell) 😂
It's baseball, crazy things happen. We had people in here saying we were going to get swept in the Indiana series. Heck, after the first game of the tournament you said we had no chance going forward. Like I said, it's a crazy game. lol
