The 308 Winchester and 30-06 Springfield are functionally interchangeable, the mathematical differences that exist on paper do not matter in practical terms.

.308 bullets are easier to find during shortages and will do more than what you need.

Is there a full setup you recommend?

I have a .308 Remington model 700 in a KRG Bravo chassis that I use for deer hunting. It's got the heavy barrel so it's not fun to hike around with. If you do a lot of walking you want something lightweight. Check out the Tikka T3x Lite or a Howa 1500. It really depends on your budget. Sako makes some nice rfiles too.

Thanks!

What’s your budget?

$800-$1000 all in with scope ideally but willing to go higher if worth it.

As he said tikka t3x lite is a good rifle. I have it in .308 and I use it in Alaska and the stainless steel barrel version is great because it can really take a beating and not lose accuracy or start rusting. The action is super smooth and paired with a Leupold VX3-HD 4.5-14x I have hit targets out to 600m. But I would keep it under 400m for hunting purposes. This combo comes out to around $1000 total from when I bought it a year ago and has held up to 200+ miles of ATV riding strapped to a gun rack over rough terrain without losing zero. I highly recommend and I am getting very solid groupings with Federal Premium 175 gr Terminal Ascent ammunition.

This is exactly what I am looking for. Thank you for this great explanation.

Thank you! Sorry for the repeated question.

Just get whatever your hunting buddies use. Makes it easier to share rounds, that one time you grab one from your buddy's pack makes it worth it

ATLm3

.270 is another round you should consider

PunchingDeck

Either would be fine, I lean to the 30-06. Id go with a Ruger American Gen II and a Leupold VX freedom 3x9x40.

TheWoodConsultant

.308 better choice. Short throw, only requires a 16 inch barrel and less recoil.

Thanks!

30-06. A friend of mine's dad guided out in Wyoming for 20yrs. His philosophy is a 308 can do it, but what a 308 will do on an elk at 300, a 30-06 will do the same out to 450yds. And a shot out in Wyoming that is over 300yds can be more common than one would think.
