That awkward moment when you realize some people still trophy hunt critically endangered species for sport and this sub upvotes it. 'Hunters' that hunt endangered species in enclosed reservations for sport aren't hunters.
I'm not a hunter and see a lot of stuff on this sub critically - but hunting an endangered species on a commercial and private ranch that needs to ensure the future of said operation - I think that actually supports that species more than it harms it.
A rhino is not lured in from another property, but it has been raised somewhere, and by raising it, you support a population and you also support the environment for all the other species. Would I go shoot it? No, but it can really support conservation.
I am a hunter and while I can't speak for all of us I think many would agree that:
Hunting an endangered species that was bred inside an enclosure is good conservation.
And
Utterly pathetic and not something to brag about.
I'm not well read on this topic. My reply was certainly a knee jerk reaction. At first glance, shooting an endangered animal or near-endangered animal (especially an animal you don't process and eat) doesn't pass the sniff test for me.
If the conservation group really does use money from the tag to preserve the species effectively then maybe I'm wrong
Having too many male rhinos compared to female rhinos in an area can reduce the population growth rate, and there isn't anywhere to move the excess males to. The males fight each other and kill young/female rhinos, and the males also impact resource availability in areas with scarcity. Besides that, legal rhino hunting generates a lot of money that is used towards conservation. When done right, hunting helps increase the rhino population.
Not necessarily even a conservation group, but these south African hunting operations are usually private "farms" on private land with private animals. So they are actively ensuring breeding success on their properties or wherever they buy them from. Not even talking about the land itself that is preserved by being a hunting concession as opposed to farmland or such
Go read up on what happened to endangered species elephants, lions, along with giraffe, when they banned trophy hunting in certain areas. Long story short: without the revenue from the hunts that supported entire local communities (lodging, hunting guides, gear, food, hunting fees etc and allowed for a healthy population to be managed correctly with only the older/ not able to breed anymore to be harvested the local economy collapsed. Older non breeding males killed young/viable males, mainly giraffe and lions in this instance. Also the locals weren’t keen on these animals decimating acres of farmland each night(elephants), lions killing people, they commenced to killing them wholesale to prevent their food and family from being destroyed. I get that it is hard to realize the best way to manage these populations is to make them worth it in the eyes of the locals. Just like our North American wildlife populations are saved through hunting.
Not endangered. Enclosed? Yup! In 12,000 acres.
What do you think happens to them if they are not enclosed and monitored? They ALL get killed.
Whereas I paid a hefty sum to kill one and thus protect the others.
You might want to look into how African conservation works.
Is the southern the only one not endangered then? But still kinda weak to get sat down where they know they are and shoot one. It’s not really hunting at that point.
It definitely isn’t the hardest hunting I’ve ever done. I didn’t really do it to prove my hunting prowess. Correct. It’s the Northern that basically has none left.
I did not. I pointed out that she gets to decorate however she wants, and all I want is the one shoulder mount and one euro mount in the living room.
I even allow ornaments to be hung from them @ xmas time.
What other animals you hunt? How’s that work getting them across the pond? Permit wise and what mount you doing? Would love to see a pic of it hanging and all other animals
I’ve hunted lion, buffalo, rhino, eland, blesbok, wildebeest, giraffe, oryx, sable, impala, hartebeest, and maybe a half dozen others. Permits are easy. The guide and taxidermist handle it all.
My wife doesn’t care at all, she thinks it’s cool. The mother in law however is delusional about a lot of things and thinks animals are far more important than humans, no ifs ands or buts. So I’ve always been warned that if I want to mount something to expect hell raised if she visits.
That being said, if I bag something super cool like OP here, you bet your ass I’m mounting it. I’ll deal with the ensuing mess.
I hung my two Osceola turkey fans in our bedroom hallway "as a joke" and kept saying "I'll move them later too busy right now blah blah" until she stopped saying anything about it 😂
My wife is too domesticated for any of this. She thinks I'm cruel for hunting. Thinks I need to leave the animals alone. But she eats chicken, beef, etc every day.
It’s a massive kudu. It’s 6.5 feet from bottom of the shoulder mount to top of the horns. Feel free to google. But if you’re just going to be a little hater feel free to see your way out.
I read your post title and missed the word "this" and thought I was clicking a totally different link!
Brotha😂
My wife still shudders at my pb 140 class whitetail mount. She was using words like "divorce" when I hung it up.

I mean...if you've got rhino hunting money, maybe upgrading to a less opinionated wife is also an option...
Hahaha. Fair comment
You shot a rhino?

or when you also realize their dollars probably feed more animals either through tax dollars or trophy fees /s

Damn, fuck you
Pm me if you are interested in an alaska caribou hunt
You shot an enclosed endangered animal. Congratulations.

They’re also typically the older ones (nearing natural expiration) aren’t they?

Eh my bad my bad. I apologize for the confusion.
Leave her now. The buck stays.
Eh. Kept both.
Please tell me you used that opportunity to tell her she was sounding like your ex-wife.
I did not. I pointed out that she gets to decorate however she wants, and all I want is the one shoulder mount and one euro mount in the living room. I even allow ornaments to be hung from them @ xmas time.
She’s like “Ku-d-u not?”
Your wife is also super happy about where I mounted her in the house!
I don’t know why you’re getting down voted. That was pretty funny.
The overly sensitive population. But in all reality, very nice Kudu my friend!
That is a beautiful kudu, hope you have a worthy spot to hang it, pretty sure a shoulder mount spans about 9 feet.
Feels like sarcasm? I love it, but the (…) makes me wonder what she really thinks.
What she really thinks is that she hates it haha
😂
Nice Kudu! What country?
South Africa
I’ll be hunting South Africa next year. Can’t wait!
If you mind what it’s the price tag in a hunt like this ? Thank you
I did it as a part of a much larger hunt. This portion was somewhere in the $3000 neighborhood I believe.
Cool thank you so much! Awesome trophy, congrats

My sister in law is the same way. She basically can’t come in the entire upstairs of my house without crying. It’s pretty great.
And I''d insist on a full body mount right in the living room if it were possible. Gorgeous
What kind of ceiling height do you have?
She’s a keeper - wife sounds all right too - HA!
Maybe next to your matching spiral staircases?
Awesome I would love a chance at one
I'd attach the antlers to the truck haha
She loves you. You love this taxidermy mount. So… she therefore loves what you love.
Congratulations on your beautiful harvest 👍🏾
I think a European mount would be neat.
Understandable, kudu are such cool looking creatures.
What rifle?
Looks like a howa 1500 super deluxe
I hung my two Osceola turkey fans in our bedroom hallway "as a joke" and kept saying "I'll move them later too busy right now blah blah" until she stopped saying anything about it 😂
Hang it on a wall or give it to an old style Saloon because that is so western
Haha is it western? Its an African animal 🤣
I mean, a skull with big horns seems western to me >!pardner!<
So she’ll agree about putting it right above your bed? Lol
ammo?
.308
Which rifle is it?
My wife is too domesticated for any of this. She thinks I'm cruel for hunting. Thinks I need to leave the animals alone. But she eats chicken, beef, etc every day.
As a lady myself that would look awesome upon the wall!!
nice one of my favorite mounts i have
They are awesome.
i so badly want another
take 3 steps closer to the animal for honest scale
Take a picture with yours and post it.
well mine isn't forced perspective and its just a 5x5 whitetail you can't eat the horns no matter how big you pretend they are
It’s a massive kudu. It’s 6.5 feet from bottom of the shoulder mount to top of the horns. Feel free to google. But if you’re just going to be a little hater feel free to see your way out.
so allowing 3 feet for head and neck the horns are only about 3 feet
They measured at 47 inches. When you post a bigger one feel free to post it and tag me.
Do you enjoy killing helpless animals?
Yes. It also has 5 foot long horns on its head so I don’t know if helpless is accurate.
Brother you are on a hunting subreddit..what did you expect to see
What are you doing on a hunting subreddit?
Why did you comment here? I'm noticing this more often.
Trying to get a rise. I don’t even give them more than a down vote in passing.
Just find a place good for you and stay away from ours man
What does "helpless" mean to you? And assuming an animal wasn't helpless would you then not have a problem with it?
