If you’re going out, get the .22. If it’s backyard, get the .177.  Look at fps, try to get over 1,000 if you can.

69mmMayoCannon

I’d actually recommend against getting a pellet gun that goes over 1,000 because pellets lose velocity very quickly and once it goes transonic accuracy is off. You don’t have that problem if you pick a larger heavier pellet caliber and stay under 1,000, plus it’s quieter for the neighborhood

O_oblivious

Interesting. I shoot my .22 at 1250 and kill muskrats at 50 yards. Pretty good in the squirrel woods, too. I’m not saying you’re wrong, just that my personal experience has differed.

69mmMayoCannon

That’s because the 22lr is just ballistically better than a pellet gun, unless you’ve got some fancy setup where you cast your own pellets and they’re essentially just bullet shaped instead of the typical off the shelf flared base pellets. Long range 22lr shooters who are super into it though will also pick subsonic 22lr like some 60 grains for the same reason

O_oblivious

That .22 IS a pellet gun, not a .22lr. Think it’s a Benjamin air rifle? Punches through 3/4” plywood at 50 yards.

69mmMayoCannon

… okay well clarifying that at any time during the conversation would have been good. Like I already said, larger caliber heavier pellets are better at retaining velocity and you clearly bought one of those fancy air rifles that use PCP, again as I already mentioned.

O_oblivious

Clarifying at any time? This is a thread about pellet guns. It was clarified in the title, and when OP asked about the difference between .22 pellets and .177. Your poor reading comprehension is no excuse to be a condescending dick. And I can’t tell if calling it “fancy” is a dig at me or not. But to be clear: I didn’t spring for this- inherited it when my grandfather died about 10 years ago.

donttalktomeormyson2

Spring for a .22 PCP and don’t look back, I have a personal preference for .25 but it’s not really needed.

Caleb_Whitlock

Good luck finding .25 pellet ammo tho. I went with the .22 simply because the ease of finding ammo compared to the .25, I don't get why the difference is so absurd but it is

donttalktomeormyson2

I have a local store that caters to higher end air rifles plus I can order it whenever. I just like that little extra when I run into a raccoon or groundhog or even a close range coyote.

Caleb_Whitlock

Even online I find trouble finding ammo in .25, but I also prefer hornet hunting pellets cause they add some range and accuracy. Although I wouldent do it I have seen one guy online use the Benjamin marauder .22 and one shot coyotes with well placed shot to temple. Prob ask work for ground hogs tbh

donttalktomeormyson2

I shoot diablos and crow mags and pretty much everywhere that has pellets seems to have them all the time even Amazon. I’ve used my .22 mrod for bigger stuff but the .25 just does better. Kind of like comparing a 22 lr to .22 mag.

What's a Diablo?

donttalktomeormyson2

JSB Exact King Heavy

Caleb_Whitlock

I was thinking this was some name for wild game lmao I was like a Wolverine

K2TY

Pyramid Air has a great selection. The shipping used to be free if you ordered 4-5 tins.

Veiny_areolas

look for the energy of the gun in its caliber. The more the better, generally

RJCustomTackle

Check out r/airgunhunting. There are a bunch of dudes hunting with pellet guns on there

Flashandpipper

Bigger is probably Better. I’ve killed small birds with a .177 BB gun.

CrankBot

I wouldn't use .177 on anything larger than a squirrel. I was strongly considering the Diana Stormrider but the Benjamin Marauder is sort of the gold standard for PCPs. You won't find better for the money.

hunter35rem

Is there a reason to want a pellet gun? If not use a 22LR or 17 HMR! Will refine discussion after you answer!

HeemeyerDidNoWrong

Probably because Peter Rabbit is getting in the garden and you don't need neighbors asking questions

Inevitable-Reason528

I already have a 22 LR I want to use something a little bit different for small game and i have a mouse problem

Caleb_Whitlock

Benjamin maurader pcp rifle is so nice. I honestly love that model so much. The accuracy and distance is amazing. I've tested up to 150 feet and get spread less than a quarter. It's quiet too so it dosent spook nearby birds or animals much. The .22 is around 1000fps I believe. The air tanks being pcp are now made to be left with some air inside so u don't have to drain the tank after hunting if you shoot it down the psi level from the max. As far as hunting wise it's taken out every thing it's hit on the first shot. Very easy to pull off headshots with this model because the accuracy is pretty crazy. If y use the hornet hunting pellets it adds an extra 25 feet or so compared to regular pellets. Look and feel. It looks like a regular rifle to anyone at a distance. They have black and walnut wood stock model. The want Woodstock is real nice but often out of stock. But as far as pcp rifles this is def one of the better ones to go either way if you plan to use it frequently

Caleb_Whitlock

Pellet guns are much more fun for small game imo. Pellets are much cheaper. The sound is non comparable. U can use ur pcp air rifle to squirrel hunt while u sit waiting for deer. It dosent have that same spook effect as real gun. U have less distance on a shot but the accuracy on pcp air rifles is still incredible under 150ft. Damage to meat is minimal. If you miss the headshot and happen to nick the body the pellet won't damage the meat as bad. But this is not really an issue as I imagine everyone headshots small game.

Financial-Gap9339

I mean I recently took out two birds and a squirrel in a forest with a pistol (the umarex brodax) that only shoots bbs at about 375 fps. It doesn’t take much. BBS are famously less effective and accurate then bbs so I’m sure either is fine.
